A little more than decade ago, Travis Page was hauling gear off a tour bus, criss-crossing the country with indie bands. One late night, sweat-soaked and exhausted, he noticed fans waiting in the rain simply to glimpse their favourite artist. Passion like that ought to power a business, he thought. That backstage epiphany still guides him as CFO of Crunchyroll, the world's largest anime platform. After the music industry's 2007 crash, Page hit reset—trading road cases for a Wharton MBA and, soon after, a seat at Barclays Capital. Covering entertainment firms during the Lehman-to-Barclays transition gave him, he laughs, “a five-year education in two.” The intensity paid seemed to pay off: at 30, he was head of finance at Remark Media, then a corporate-development deal maker at Demand Media.Sony Pictures Entertainment came calling next. Page helped stitch together seven anime acquisitions, culminating in Funimation's purchase and, later, the Crunchyroll merger. When Sony needed a strategic CFO to scale the nascent service, his boss put his name forward—before even asking him. He accepted on the spot.Today, Crunchyroll counts “over 15 million subscribers in 200 countries,” Page tells us, triple the total since the 2021 merger. His playbook pairs disciplined capital allocation with fan-first intuition: license or co-produce 99 percent of content in Japan, then “explode” each franchise across streaming, film, and consumer products. Finance's role? Embedded FP&A analysts sit in strategy off-sites, ensuring every creative gamble lands on a sound financial stage—just like those fans waiting in the rain taught him years ago.
In this episode, we chat with Tim Clark, CEO and Director of Fury Gold Mines, a Canadian focused high grade gold exploration company strategically positioned in 2 prolific mining regions in Quebec and Nunaveut in Northern and Eastern Canada. Tim is a senior executive with extensive experience in capital markets working for the likes of Barclays Capital and BMO. He has helped the transition of Fury Gold’s strategy to move from a hybrid development company into a dedicated high-grade gold exploration company focused on working with several of the largest gold producers globally. On the podcast, Tim shares his journey and that of Fury Gold, the exploration programme they will be undertaking, the capital markets industry, and how they are helping the local communities with their initiatives. KEY TAKEAWAYS Learning from experienced professionals helped Tim develop essential skills and navigate the complexities of the capital markets. Fury Gold Mines operates in Canada, focusing on high-grade gold exploration in regions with supportive regulatory environments, such as Quebec. This strategic positioning reduces geopolitical risks and enhances the potential for successful exploration. The company is set to begin drilling at the Éléonore South property, which has promising geological indicators similar to the nearby Éléonore mine. Successful drilling could significantly enhance the company's value and attract interest from larger mining firms. Fury Gold Mines prioritises building strong relationships with local Indigenous communities, recognising the importance of collaboration and support. This approach not only fosters goodwill but also helps in navigating regulatory landscapes and ensuring sustainable development practices. BEST MOMENTS "The risk is you get out there and you run out of money; the reward is if you find something, this is the part of the market you can make the most money and the most upside." "When I got into New York, they used to say a lot of your career is if you get lucky enough to sit next to a really great senior person that can teach you the ropes." "We have probably one of the better high-grade mines in the area. We've got 1.9 million ounces and around six and a half grams of gold, and that's very high-grade." "The interesting part about gold is it's the one currency that no one owns. It's here to stay as much as Bitcoin is up and down." In this episode, we chat with Gavin Ferrar, who is now the new CEO of Central Asia Metals, a base metals producer on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange and has a copper operation in Kazakhstan, and a zinc and lead mine in North Macedonia. With a geology and finance background, Gavin has over 25 years of experience mainly working in the London investment banking sector focusing on debt and derivative financing for mining clients of Barclays Capital and equity and debt investments for Investec. He became the CFO of Central Asia Metals back in 2018 before stepping into the CEO's shoes just recently. Gavin talks to us about his new role, how the company has progressed during his tenure, their ESG initiatives, and their business development activities especially with their recent investment into Aberdeen Minerals. KEY TAKEAWAYS Central Asia Metals operates two key assets: the Kounrad copper processing facility in Kazakhstan and the Sasa lead-zinc mine in North Macedonia. Both operations have shown strong profitability, with Kounrad achieving a 72% margin and projected copper production of 13,000 to 14,000 tons for the year. The company is transitioning to more efficient mining methods at Sasa, including paste fill and dry stack tailings, which enhance resource extraction, improve safety, and extend the mine's life to 2039. Central Asia Metals is committed to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, including a solar power project in Kazakhstan aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and compliance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). The company is actively seeking to expand its portfolio by acquiring additional cash-flowing assets and has invested in ventures like Camel X for greenfields exploration in Kazakhstan and Aberdeen Minerals, which shows promising geological potential. BEST MOMENTS "I think my elevation to the CEO is part of that continuity... two people who understand the business intimately, but are also very keen to drive Central Asia Metals into its next phase of growth." "We've achieved exceptionally high margins, and the recent results that we put out in September, the margins that we're achieving are around 72%, which is fantastic." "The benefits now is that we've got much more efficient extraction of that resource using much more selective mining techniques." "Our goal is to achieve a 50% reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030... this was part of that program in terms of getting there." Todd Mortensen is a corporate attorney in New York City who advises boards of directors, investment banks, and special committees on sell-side, buy-side, public, and private transactions in a wide range of industries. Todd has represented Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, Barclays Capital, Wells Fargo Securities, UBS, and Rothschild & Co. among others. Todd has also worked in a number of investment management roles at Blackstone, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, and Wells Fargo. He's a former professional athlete and speaks fluent Spanish and earned a JD/MBA from Penn Law School and Wharton. In this episode we discuss the following: As a corporate attorney Todd helps CEOs and Boards of Directors 1) act in good faith and 2) be fully informed when buying and selling billion-dollar businesses. If the execs fulfill those two requirements, the court will defer to the “business judgement rule.” Otherwise, the courts will use the more stringent “entire fairness” standard. If you want to be successful at anything, you typically have to work really, really hard at it. This includes embracing the process of improving a little bit each day, week, and year. And if you're consistent and diligent with your work ethic, overtime you'll rise to the top. If you're good to people, doors will open for you. Todd's managing director at Morgan Stanley taught him that the decisions that would most affect Todd's career would likely be made when Todd wasn't in the room. So, Todd needed to make sure that his reputation helped rather than hurt him during those meetings. As Todd learned in Venezuela, “Create fama y echete a la came.” Create fame for yourself, and then go lie down. Our reputation is either helping or hurting us. US Credit Strategy: how does it work, who are the players, and what are the career opportunities? Today we are discussing the structure of the Credit Strategy desk at an Investment Bank with Dominique Toublan, head of US Credit Strategy at Barclays Capital. We discuss how you approach the vast world of corporate bonds and distill trends as a strategist, how you reconcile investor sentiment with supply/demand dynamics, and what role are you serving within the ecosystem of Wall Street. The US Credit market --- meaning, where corporate bonds trade after they've been issued --- is orders of magnitude larger than the US Equities market. Credit spreads, which are a measure of the riskiness associated with the debt of an individual corporate borrower, are a critical barometer of economic strength/weakness and investor risk appetite. Understanding these dynamics is essential not only to those who wish to pursue a career in credit strategy, trading, or sales, but also for those who wish to understand the Private Credit markets and the funding dynamics that influence deal making and investment on the Private Equity and Hedge Fund side of the industry. Dr. Coronado is a clinical associate professor of finance at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas. She has more than a decade of experience as a financial market economist including serving as chief economist for Graham Capital Management and BNP Paribas, and as a senior economist at Barclays Capital. After receiving her Ph.D. in economics from the University of Texas at Austin, Julia worked for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington D.C. for eight years where she regularly briefed the board and contributed to the FOMC forecasts. Inflation is a term that has been on everyone's lips recently. For investors and policymakers alike, staying on top of the latest trends in the inflation market is essential for making informed decisions about their investments and financial strategies. In this episode, Rusty and Robyn talk with Michael Ashton, a.k.a. The Inflation Guy. Michael, Managing Principal at Enduring Investments, is one of the pioneers in U.S. inflation market innovation. Since 2003, Michael has played a role in developing the U.S. inflation derivatives markets and is a subject matter expert on inflation products and inflation trading. Before founding Enduring Investments, Michael worked in research, sales, and trading for several large investment banks, including Bankers Trust, Barclays Capital, and J.P. Morgan. Michael talks with Rusty and Robyn about inflation and economics from a trader's seat. He speaks about his inflation outlook, how people should think and respond to inflation, and what makes a good trader. Key Takeaways [03:32] - An overview of Michael's professional history. [05:36] - What Michael says about the current inflation environment. [06:43] - Michael's outlook for inflation for the rest of the year. [10:49] - How people should think about inflation. [11:28] - What Michael has to say about the Fed's efforts to combat inflation. [13:44] - Why the markets are more optimistic about inflation dropping right now. [16:08] - Michael's outlook on interest rates, stocks, and real assets. [19:38] - What the government debt levels mean for the economy and the markets. [24:39] - How investors should manage their portfolios in an inflationary environment. [28:57] - How investors and advisors should think about high-frequency economic data. [31:05] - Michael's approach to using consensus expectations and surveys. [35:53] - What Michael meant when he said boredom is winning. [37:51] - How AI is going to change investing. [41:56] - What Michael advises people about consuming content. [45:05] - Michael's favorite investment idea. [47:06] - How Michael maintains his energy to perform at his best. Quotes [06:17] - "The inflation derivatives markets are pricing in that inflation would reach two and a quarter by June, and that's just not going to happen. Core inflation and median inflation will take a long time to get back to any semblance of what we thought and what used to be normal. And when I say a long time, I mean years." ~ Michael Ashton [10:50] - "The debate coming into this year wasn't whether inflation would decline as much as the market thought. The question was, when does everyone realize that inflation won't be 2% by the middle of the year?" ~ Michael Ashton [24:55] - "One of the things that happen when you get to higher inflation, in addition to having more volatile inflation, is all of the financial variables get more volatile. You need to diversify more than you otherwise would have in real assets, particularly commodities." ~ Michael Ashton Links Michael Ashton on LinkedIn Michael Ashton on Twitter Enduring Investments Cents and Sensibility: The Inflation Guy Podcast Lampshades on Fire by Modest Mouse J.P. Fundrise CEO Ben Miller is joined by Schecky Schechner, Managing Director and Co-Head of US Real Estate Banking at Barclays Capital, for a wide-ranging and technically insightful conversation in this latest episode of Onward. As Ben points out, Schecky is credited as one of the co-inventors of Commercial Mortgage-Backed Securities (CMBS) in the wake of the S&L crisis in the late ‘80s, a securitization innovation that has since become a trillion-dollar system, earning Schecky his reputation as a living legend in the real estate world. Ben and Schecky's conversation opens with a broad discussion on the current state of the market before moving into a recap of our “Great Deleveraging” thesis. They then go on to discuss a wealth of additional topics and key financial ideas, including how securitization is a democratizing force in financial markets; why the late 1980's were “the Big Bang” for real estate finance; why the idioms “A rolling loan gathers no loss,” and “Extend and pretend,” might have a major impact on the American economy over the next twelve months; and much more. The group of 23 oil-producing countries known as OPEC+ announced a cut in production at its recent meeting in Vienna. The move sparked a sharp backlash from leaders in Washington amid concerns about high energy prices and their impact on the global economy. OPEC+ countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, defended the decision by pointing to the weak economic outlook depressing oil demand. Others concluded geopolitics may have been at play given the relationship between OPEC+ countries and Russia. In Washington, calls for retaliation were immediate. Proposals included a cessation of arms sales to Saudi Arabia, legislation to strip OPEC+ of its immunity from antitrust lawsuits, or new releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Was the market in need of a production cut? And how much did geopolitics play a role in OPEC+'s decision? This week host Jason Bordoff talks with Amrita Sen. Amrita is the co-founder and chief oil analyst at Energy Aspects. She leads their analysis and forecasting of crude and products markets. Amrita was formerly the chief oil analyst at Barclays Capital. She holds a masters in economics from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in economics from SOAS University of London. Amrita's deep understanding of the complexity of the global energy sector, along with a wealth of industry contacts and experience, gives her a unique perspective on market outlook. Earlier this month, she warned clients that U.S. shale output could peak in 2024. Together, Jason and Amrita discuss the rationale behind the OPEC+ cuts and the influence of geopolitics. They also talk about the U.S. response and production outlook for the next few years.

Anything that isn't related to making or divesting of investments potentially falls in the lap of the CFO.”“Typically, within a lot of private equity firms, it is the CFO that just keeps everything on the straight and narrow, keeps everything sort of running with the exception of the buying and selling of investments.”“Twenty years ago, private equity business was very much sort of cookie cutter. One investment looked very much like another. One fund looked very much like the last fund. And there wasn't a great deal that changed. But now you need to be part lawyer, part accountant, part tax advisor, part regulatory consultant, and I think 20 years ago that wasn't the case. Certainly not to the same extent.”“In terms of leading the team, one of the key things that I find is that I don't ask anyone in my team to do something that I have never done myself in the past or don't sometimes do myself at the moment”“I think that sort of move towards automation and digitalization has always been there within the finance function. It just sort of progresses over time. It's something that you can't just, oh, over the next two years we're going to digitalize every manual process. It needs to be constantly evolving.”“One of the most important bits of advice is never be too important to do anything because it helps keep you grounded. It also helps with building a team.
