Most of us were parented in this way but there is a shift in thinking about the way we raise our kids. Parents don’t feel good about using shame, blame, criticism, punishments, and…

Making Sense of Senseless Violence - Encore Presentation

When I first recorded this episode it was in response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary that was preceded by the supermarket shooting days earlier. With gun violence on the rise, more mass shootings, war in many countries, there is no time better than now to help our kids understand and make sense of what seems like senseless violence. Please listen to my brilliant guest, Barbara Rubel and how she shares her own story and provides us with a path forward for us and our kids. Please listen and please share. Gun violence has been heavy on everyone's mind with the horrific massacre at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York and just ten days later, the shooting of innocent lives at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. It makes sense that you have feelings about what's happened and are grieving the loss of life and innocence whether you know the victims or not. As parents, it hits us especially hard when we see innocent children killed. Sending our kids to school brings up anxiety and fear in us, and our sense of safety is gone. How do we live with the anxiety and fear we are all feeling? How do we make sense out of senseless violence? How do we make meaning out of something so tragic? Barbara Rubel, as a Thanatologist, is an expert in death, dying and bereavement. She helps people cope with, and move on from, sudden traumatic loss. Barbara and I talk about how we can process these tragedies, grieve the loss of the innocent lives, explain what's happened to our kids, take care of ourselves at this time and move through the pain. I have enormous respect for the work Barbara does, and I know you will love what she has to share. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we have to have these hard conversations with our kids. When you go to them, stay rooted in your strengths, explain death in a way that's age appropriate and aligned with your beliefs, and it's ok to show emotions to your children. Feeling sad is normal and natural, this IS sad. Get ready to meet ADHD Royalty, Peter Shankman! He is known globally for his entrepreneurial prowess, and work on educating himself and the world about ADHD. I've known of Peter's work for years and it's truly an honour to speak with him!He wants both kids and parents to know that a diagnosis of ADHD doesn't mean you're broken, but brilliant! That if you have an ADHD brain, you have been given a gift of a brain that's equal to a Ferrari, but society and the school system wants these kids to fit into a “Honda Accord” brain! I love that metaphor, and if you have a kiddo with this diagnosis, you know exactly what he's talking about!Peter's message to parents is that neurodiversity brings gifts and we need to have unwavering love, support and advocacy for our kids. Using this superpower for good means we focus on feeding that brain with exercise, protein, nutrition and calming techniques. For a download of Peter's article, Ten Ways to be Happier When You Live/Love Someone Diagnosed With ADHD, visit the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comAbout Peter ShankmanPeter Shankman is a spectacular example of what happens when you find the best traits of ADHD and work really hard to make them benefit you. By the time Peter was diagnosed as ADHD he had started and sold two companies and realized that all the differences that formerly labeled him as a troublemaker were actually his greatest assets. After Peter sold his third company, (Help a Reporter Out,) he decided to focus on really understanding this “faster brain” of his, and learning exactly what it could do. From that, the "Faster Than Normal" podcast and bestselling book of the same name were born. Since then, Peter has written numerous best-selling books and “Faster than Normal” is the Internet's #1 podcast on ADHD. Diet plays a role, but there's more to it. Chronic inflammation is becoming more common, affecting our kids' bodies and brains, even contributing to diseases.Imagine your body as a bucket, and chronic inflammation keeps filling it up. We need to reduce the load to avoid overflow and health problems. Technology is one factor adding to that load. Kids are surrounded by screens all the time.Stats show that 94% of US kids have internet access, and high schoolers spend up to 11 hours a day with digital tech. It's crazy! Excessive screen time can mess with social skills, relationships, and attention span which are common symptoms of ADHD, which we are trying to ease in the first place. It's not all doom and gloom, it's all about balance. Listen in as we talk about other things that could be making ADHD symptoms worse for your child. Dana is a wealth of information! I like to share guests and stories that are uplifting, helpful and inspiring but sometimes a subject is so important that it needs a special focus. The crisis that's taking place in the adoption and foster care system is something my guest, Jenell Jones knows all too well. A mom of seven; three bio, two bonus (step child and nephew) and two adopted kids has shown her how broken the system is.Jenell explains why this is an EVERYBODY PROBLEM because these kids are our future, and their future looks bleak because of repeated traumas, neglect, and abuse. We need to all take a look at what's going on because the sad truth is that if something doesn't happen to change the systems, these kids are the future of homelessness, poverty, mental illness, addiction, incarceration, and crime. We can all play a part in solving this problem by first talking about it and bringing it to light. And when you see a child in crisis, please approach with compassion and curiosity. For Jenell Jones' “Parenting the Parentified Child”article, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comAbout Jenell JonesJenell M. Through her life experiences, passion is the source by which she governs herself to make a difference. The goal is not to be perfect but to assist others in rising through difficulties. Inclusive Education in Schools

Educational environments for students with disabilities range from a complete denial of formal educational services to equal participation in all aspects of the education system. Educational experiences of students with disabilities fall into one of four categories: exclusion, segregation, integration and inclusive. (from the Alana Report) My guest today is director and filmmaker, Olivier Bernier, who among many attributes, is the dad to 6-year-old Emilio, who was born with Down Syndrome. In his work, he naturally wanted to document his son's experience entering into school, only to find out that Emilio was being segregated from the general school population. This lead Olivier on a journey to advocate, and educate people on the importance of inclusion in schools for every child regardless of ability.  In his film, “Forget Me Not”, he looks at the way our kids are being taught, and how the outdated system isn't set up to nurture and teach every child. He shares how inclusiveness is beneficial to ALL children and the research backs up that claim. If you or someone you know has a child that has learning differences, been segregated, or you aren't getting the support you need, you will want to listen to this episode and watch, “Forget Me Not.” For Olivier's The Alana Report – a summary of the evidence on inclusive education, developed by some of the foremost experts in the field. This report serves as a thorough and accessible primer on the topic of inclusion, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com About Olivier Bernier Award winning Director, Olivier Bernier lives and breathes to tell stories that explore the human condition. You might not think this episode is for you…but I PROMISE you, you will want to hear it! I am forever changed by this conversation with my guest, Chris Jankulovski. As I write these show notes, after our conversation, I'm vibrating with excitement, gratitude, inspiration and love. Chris has a very rare condition that (along with some teenage shenanigans), have caused him to have EIGHT near death experiences. He has gone from complaining about life, his condition, adversities, and limitations, to finding his purpose, and living a life of fulfillment, gratitude and joy. In this episode we talk about focusing on what you CAN control, versus what you CAN'T. In other words, embracing the fact that all you can control is your thoughts and actions, the rest…well, that is where acceptance comes in! I know it's not that easy but, in a way, it can be that simple.  Chris and I talk about life, and parenthood and he shares what's needed to live a deliberate life. These steps include: Stop running from life's problems Have clarity of our true desires Embrace and notice that we are on autopilot most of the time and how important being intentional is Sprinkle in acceptance, hope, gratitude, and time to reflect and you have the recipe for a more fulfilling life. But let me tell you, there is so much more wisdom packed into this conversation. I am forever grateful and changed from it and I hope you are too! It's pretty obvious that when your child has sleep issues, you take them to the dentist…right? Well, as counterintuitive as that might sound, it might be the one thing you never knew about that could literally change your life, and most importantly, your child's!  Sleep is a HUGE issue for parents from the moment our kids are born all the way through the teen years. I talk to my clients frequently about sleep strategies for their kids who resist going to sleep, have regular pop ups, nightly wakings, and wake up too early in the morning. When your kids aren't sleeping, nobody's sleeping and that can spiral into parents being exhausted, irritable, and short tempered and for your kids, they can be dysregulated, unfocused, and much more challenging to parent. Perhaps one of the last things you'll look at is the relationship between sleep and dentistry but there is a huge connection and seeing the right dentist can radically change the quality of your child's sleep. My guest is Dr Meghna Dassani, who, in her Sleep Dentistry practice, is helping her young patients end their interrupted sleep, sleep apnea, and sleep disordered breathing. She and I have the most interesting conversation where we talk about how poor-quality sleep impacts health, behavior and IQ.  Did you know that sleep disorders show up with the same symptoms as ADHD? I had no idea! Asking for a sleep study will help you to see what's really going on. Some things parents can look for as signs your child might have a sleep issue, are: ●     Snoring/audible breathing ●     Messy sleeper ●     Always tired in the morning ●     Bed wetting I hope you find this episode as eye opening as I did! The Stories Whiteness Tells Itself

I know the subject of racism makes many people uncomfortable; myself included. As a white woman, I am trying to better understand the history of racism in North America and how it has created our present reality. In this episode, I'm talking to David Mura, who is an accomplished writer and subject matter expert. He and I discuss what “whiteness” is and some of the roots of racism in America, that goes back as far as the 1800's when social scientists declared “blackness” criminal. We talk about how access to land ownership was restricted to Caucasians by the federal government in the 1930's, and post WWII, how medical myths are still prevalent in today's doctor's offices and hospitals. We also touch on Critical Race Theory, what it is and if it should be taught to our children.   David brings up the past in order for us to understand how it informs our present. He wants to enact change, not through shame and guilt, but through love and knowledge. Simply put, we want to teach our kids to have an open heart and mind when it comes to other cultures, and people of differing backgrounds and beliefs.  There can be no hate when we are curious and open. Can you challenge your beliefs, bias and thoughts? Curiosity and openness are what can pave the way for more understanding and less fear and hate. I hope you find this episode helpful as you navigate this complex issue with your children. The Richness of Black History - You Probably Haven't Heard

When it comes to Black History, there are so many stories that aren't told. You can't know what you don't know or what is ignored. We aren't here to talk about the past trauma of Black History in North America, but rather, their strengths and triumphs. In this episode, I'm talking to Dr. Crystal Menzies about honouring the history of slavery forced upon Black people, but also, recognizing that the Black history is not only tied to that trauma. There is a deep and rich history of power, influence and resistance.  Crystal talks about “Community Cultural Wealth” to teach both students and teachers not to look at Black students as, “a problem” but to see them through a lens of what is ALSO TRUE. That they bring with them a history of cultural capital assets that are aspirational familial, linguistic, social, navigational and resistant.  She looks to stories of Maroon communities who were formed from Africans who freed themselves from slavery and created hidden societies, as a way to model liberation within oppression. This is a great conversation to star having with your kids so we can all reframe the way we see Black people, communities and history. For Crystal's EmancipatED Book List, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com About Crystal Menzies A former educator in urban schools, Crystal drew on her personal experience, African-Diasporan history, and her Guyanese and African American roots to found EmancipatED where she develops research-based educational experiences that center Black communities. In her flagship product, she draws on the stories of Maroon communities – Africans who freed themselves from slavery and created hidden societies – to offer Black and Brown families a model for how to navigate as liberated beings within oppressive systems. She lives in the Bay Area (or the Yay area as she affectionately refers to it) and enjoys reading, Marvel movies, and daydreaming of Black Futures. How many times has your child come to you with questions that have left you feeling at a loss for what to say? Thankfully, my guest, Dr. Lauren Starnes, has you covered! In this episode, Dr. Starnes and I talk about how to talk about hard things with our children. We are talking about miscarriage, death of a pet, divorce, and gun violence. Regardless of the topic, she says that we want to get into the practice of giving ourselves a moment to respond. In other words, to pause. This practice lets you gather your thoughts, notice your emotions and center yourself. It's ok to take a moment so you can be intentional about what you say, versus blurting out something you can't take back. Dr. Starnes guides us through the process of finding out what your child knows and thinks about what they're asking about, how they feel, and what you can do for next steps.  It's inevitable that you kids will come to you with big questions, and this will help you navigate these delicate waters with confidence.  For a copy of Lauren's handouts on divorce and gun violence from the book “Big Conversations with Little Children”, go to the Parent Toolbox to download them for free. www.parent-toolbox.com About Dr. Lauren Starnes Dr. Lauren Starnes is the senior vice president and chief academic officer at Goddard Systems, LLC., the franchisor of The Goddard School. The last thing you want for your kids is for them to start their life off as an adult buried in debt (like a lot of us were!). It doesn't have to be that way! Even a small amount can add up to tens of thousands of dollars for your child when they become adults!  This can be the start of generational wealth! It's possible for anyone! My guest Ksenia Yudina is a CFA and the founder & CEO of UNest, a mobile investment app to help parents save for their kid's futures! She shares how the app uses compound interest, gifting and rewards to build your child's account. No matter what part of the world you live in, if you can save $25 a month once your child is born, that can amount to $60,000 when they graduate from high school! If you increase that amount over the years, say to $100 a month, it can amount to SIX FIGURES! Imagine not having to have school debt, have the money for your first car or down payment on your first home?  Ksenia, shows you how to do all of this while also teaching your kids! Too often we thing when we struggle, have stress and anxiety, there is something WRONG with us! That we might have a mental illness…but what if it was actually something else entirely? Dr. Sasha Heinz is not only BRILLIANT, she will help you see things in a completely different way! We start out by talking about self-compassion, but we quickly turn into a conversation like I've never had before. I'll be forever changed from it.  Dr. Heinz talks about how we, as women, as moms, are socialized to prioritize other's needs - ok, nothing new here…but she goes on to talk about how when we feel threatened, we revert back to our survival instincts of fight or flight BUT women, move into “tend and befriend”. It's a completely different way of responding to stress than men.  Here's the best part! We can evolve past this! We are just stuck in a developmental stage as adults and with some internal work, we can be free of these disempowering behaviors! We can become people who consider others' opinions but aren't ruled by them.   There is so much more in this episode I know you'll love! When you are faced with a diagnosis given to your child, it can feel like the rug has been pulled out from under you or, conversely, you might feel relieved! Whether you feel like the diagnosis has confirmed your suspicions, or you feel angry, confused and grief, all of it is normal and natural and OK!BUT the one thing that isn't ok, is you not taking care of yourself. being the parent of a neurodivergent child can be a rollercoaster of challenging moments, fun, laughter, joy and sadness all at once. In short, it can be exhausting, and if you don't take the steps to care and nurture your needs, it's not good for anyone. In this episode, we talk about how to process and make sense of a diagnosis and how to make sure we take care of ourselves along the way! Dr. Noreen Russell is back for another discussion with me. She is the mom of two neurologically atypical kids and has a practice dedicated to serving complex children and their parents. She knows firsthand how important it is to take care of your needs as a parent (ALL PARENTS!)I love Dr. Russell's approach to self-care. She talks about learning what “self-care” means for YOU. It can be a hot bath or a walk, OR it can be dropping the ball on something, making a frozen pizza for dinner; it's whatever you want it to be. Keep in mind that taking care of yourself requires that you are giving yourself permission to do it without guilt, shame or worry. The Secrets of Your Nervous System | POF197

We hear a lot about the nervous system these days, but what is it we are actually talking about? Before talking to my guest, Lauren Isaacs, I had a basic knowledge of the nervous system but she's made me understand it's workings and purpose in a whole new way! We are talking about “Polyvagal Theory” which is all about learning the biological order of human response that we ALL experience. So, when you LOSE IT, know that it's not your fault, you're triggered and your nervous system is reacting. No need to beat yourself up, feel ashamed, tell yourself a story about how terrible you/your reaction is, just notice it, accept it and take action to calm yourself (in really simple ways).Lauren explains that the nervous system from the moment we are born is looking for cues of safety and danger all the time. It's meant to protect us and keep us safe. BUT as we live our lives and have experiences, like growing up in a home with lots of shouting, means shouting will equal danger and become a trigger for you. If you grew up with neglect, the nervous system doesn't know how to regulate itself and that can lead us down a path that's destructive. What is “Peaceful Parenting | POF195

I get this question a lot. Sometimes people ask me because they know they want to be more peaceful, but some people ask because they think it means raising kids who are entitled snowflakes. I get it, and frankly, I wasn't sure if it was for me until I understood what it was all about. In a “full circle moment” I'm interviewing Kiva Shuler, the CEO of the Jai Institute of Parenting where I was trained and certified as a Parent Coach! We are talking about what “Peaceful Parenting” is, and what it isn't. We know that our childhoods carry enormous weight throughout our lives. As parents we have to approach the job of raising our children in a new way that recognizes we are living in a different world and we are tackling issues and situations that didn't exist before. Peaceful parenting recognizes that our children are facing new challenges with mental health, social media, and the online world. Parenting in a more peaceful way doesn't mean your kids run the show. It doesn't mean there aren't boundaries. As parents we know we can't be perfect, and we aren't trying to be, but we show up for our kids with humility, curiosity, listening, and honouring who our kids are, not who we expect them to be (how many of us wish we had a little “mini me”? I know I did!). We know parenting can be painful, frustrating, gut wrenching and full of joy, fun, excitement and connection. It can be all these things at once! For Kiva's masterclass, The science of staging calm, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comAbout Kiva SchulerKiva Schuler is the Founder and CEO of The Jai Institute for Parenting, an organization that has trained over 1,000 parenting coaches globally. She is also the author of the ground-breaking book The Peaceful Parenting (R)evolution: Changing the World by Changing How We Parent which examines the "consequences" of traditional parenting methods and offers a more modern approach grounded in emotional intelligence, values-led leadership, and effective communication.Kiva's passion for parenting stemmed from her own childhood experiences of neglect and trauma. Like many of her generation, she had a front-row seat to the kind of parenting that she did not want for her own children. The Jai Institute is the fulfillment of a promise that she made to herself when she was 16 years old that when she had children of her own, she would learn to parent them with compassion, consistency and communication.Kiva's passion, enthusiasm and effervescence instantly create openness, connection, and inspiration with her audiences. On a mission to change the culture around parenting, Kiva wants children to grow up to reach their full potential, and live their lives free of trauma, shame and emotional wounds. As a single mother, she has built an extraordinary business that has touched tens of thousands of lives, and empowered others who share her mission to do this work. Can you overcome fear and anxiety? The answer is a huge YES! My guest Dr. Friedemann, is going to show you exactly how to do it!In this episode, I have the most interesting conversation with Dr. Friedemann, that at times, his answers left me speechless. He talks about how powerful our subconscious mind is and how it's always operating in the background working to keep us safe and happy. AND, if our lives have been overtaken by fear and anxiety, how to use this powerful operating system to get back to who we really are- not who we have been told to be or think we need to be.So many people are living in survival mode because they don't know who they really are. Do you remember when you were a child how sure of yourself you were in certain situations and areas? Why did we lose that? How did we lose it? It's even harder for our kids with so many different voices telling them who they ‘should' be, do and think. The fact is, the way we cope with the stresses and anxiety in life is often through disempowering patterns where we give our power away in order to feel belonging. But that doesn't work in the long term because it comes from a place of needing external validation which we can never count on. I loved every single minute of my conversation with Dr. Friedemann and I believe he has the key to helping you become empowered in your own life so you can shine your light and share your unique gifts with the world. On March 21, 2023 Dr. Friedemann's e-book will be 50% off! Is it bitcoin, crypto currency or is money still money? What is inflation? What is Shrinkflation? We are talking about all things money so your kids can have a healthy understanding of what it is, and how to use it wisely. My guest Robin Taub, who is an expert on all things money, is breaking it down for us in the most non-boring way! We talk about what “financial literacy” is (the knowledge skills and confidence to make financial decisions at every stage of life) and how it's the key to economic growth and prosperity and allows you to make sound financial decisions and grow your money, not be caught in too much debt. What impression do your kids have of your finances? Do they think that you have a bottomless pit of money somewhere? Do they get the impression you have no money? Is the topic taboo in your household? If you feel lost, you aren't alone! Robin Taub is so knowledgeable on this topic and helps you to break it down into 5 main pillars that starts with “Earn” and is followed by save, spend, share, and invest. One thing that Robin said in this episode, is that you want to start talking about money when your kids are young, so they can make mistakes when the stakes are low. In this episode we are talking about how critical chemicals in our brain work. First, we need to understand that we are wired for survival and what experiences we have in our early years, inform the way we react to situations later in life. We talk about Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphin and how we can use them to feel good! For Loretta's book, “Anxiety: What turns it on, what turns it off”, info graphics to simplify the workings of the brain, and handouts for parents and teachers, please visit the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comAbout Loretta BreuningLoretta G. Breuning, PhD, is Founder of the Inner Mammal Institute and Professor Emerita of Management at California State University, East Bay. She is the author of many personal development books, including Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain Your Brain to Boost Your Serotonin, Dopamine, Oxytocin and Endorphin Levels. As a teacher and a parent, she was not convinced by prevailing theories of human motivation. Then she learned about the brain chemistry we share with earlier mammals and everything made sense. She began creating resources that have helped thousands of people make peace with their inner mammal. Dr. Breuning's work has been translated into twelve languages and is cited in major media. How do we make sense of the information we are surrounded by when it's so divisive, polarizing and confusing? What if we have fallen victim to disinformation and we feel embarrassed that we did? How do we teach our kids the truth if we don't even know what's fact or fiction? My guest is the author of the book, What the Fact and is a medical doctor, journalist, epidemiologist and professor at UCLA so Dr. Seema Yasmin, knows what she's talking about. Seema is a self-described “former” conspiracy theorist, who is helping us to understand the difference between misinformation and disinformation and how to get to the bottom to find the truth. What I love about my conversation with Seema is that she understands that disinformation is meant to exploit our fear and she meets that with empathy and understanding (because she's fallen victim to it too). She also explains how our brains work to seek out information and that can make us fall victim to disinformation, hoaxes and conspiracy theories. In this episode we also talk about how to discuss differing views with others and have disagreements in a productive way - yes! It's possible! We all hate being lied to and manipulated and at the same time, we want to be heard! Listening to this episode will help you really understand what's happening and how you can spot BS (Hint: There is actually a 10-step recipe for disinformation!)For Dr. Seema's Key Takeaways: Ten Media Literacy Lessons from What the Fact?!, head to the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com About Seema YasminDr. Seema Yasmin is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, Pulitzer Prize finalist, medical doctor and Stanford and UCLA professor. The author of five books, her reporting appears in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, WIRED, Scientific American, and on the BBC, NBC and other news networks. Her unique combination of expertise as a dually-trained physician and medical journalist have been called upon by the Vatican, the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, and the White House, among others. Seema is director of the Stanford Health Communication Initiative, clinical assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University, and visiting professor of crisis management and communication at UCLA's Anderson School of Management. Only the top 1% or less of athletes are good enough to achieve the heights that allow them to participate in professional sports. One such highly decorated athlete is my guest, Natasha Hastings who has an Olympic gold medal, and many championships wins to her name but she's not here to talk about the elite 1%, she wants to talk to the 99% who don't reach the highest height. Natasha is transitioning from elite athletics to psychology and wants to help fill the gap between mental health and the pressure put on athletes. She also has a message for parents that when it comes to encouraging your kids to play sports, and if they have serious talent, we can't want it more than they do because it will lead to your child resenting you and leaving the sport. She encourages parents to listen to their kids and honour who they are, and not live vicariously through them. It's not easy but we need to keep our hopes and dreams for our kids in check, and make sure they want the same thing! About Natasha HastingsFollowing a successful prep career, Natasha attended the University of South Carolina, where she majored in Exercise Science. As a scholar athlete at USC, Natasha won both the 400 meters Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships her junior year, setting collegiate records in the process. Natasha finished her junior year undefeated in her competitions. After turning pro in 2007, Natasha made her first USA Olympic Track and Field team in 2008, as a member of the Gold medal winning 4x400 meters relay team. Additionally, Natasha has made every USA World Championship team since becoming a professional sprinter. While Natasha accomplishes a lot on the track, she knows that rest is just as important as exertion. After she jokingly described the ladies of her collegiate track team as the “Gamecock Divas”, in honor of the University of South Carolina's mascot, Natasha became known as the 400M Diva. For a further look into her personality and professional life, Natasha Hastings vlogs on her YouTube channel. Ultimately, as Natasha nears retirement, there is no doubt that she will continue to strive for excellence on and off the track as she is currently pursuing a graduate degree in clinical psychology to close the gaps between mental health and the pressure put on athletes.Social Media:Website: https://www.natashahastings.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natasha-hastings-a6943042/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/natashamoniquehastingsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/natashahastings/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/natashahastingsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUnr7MStPskyxIrCeqV7-4g/www.natashahastings.comThanks for listening! She helps to normalize it and will help you to know exactly what to say. Our sex drive is a very strong drive (I know you know) and ignoring it doesn't serve your children. WE want to communicate sex and sexual identity because (believe it or not) we have the most influence over their decision making. If you have a child with ADHD, chances are, your child's behavior has changed the way you thought your family would be together. ADHD can cause a child to have severe tantrums, intense hyperactivity, uncontrollable impulsivity and can toggle between lack of focus and intense focus. This is a huge topic and I'm thrilled to have one of the foremost experts, Dr. Rania Nasis, on to talk about what allergies are, and what we can do to support kids with allergies and their parents. In this episode, Rania and I talk about the basics of allergies and what qualifies as an allergy - it's an immune response to the food that's life threatening. We also talk about the difference between allergies and sensitivities. Food allergies are on the rise and there are actually ways you can prevent them. A 2015 study concluded that introducing food allergens earlier in a child's life can prevent severe allergies. The reality is, that if you have a child with allergies, you face added stress, worry and work to keep them safe. As a community, we all need to be a part of the solution and normalize food allergies so our kids don't feel excluded because of their differences. This is what my guest, Jamie Fiore Higgins, lived. She didn't just have the hustle, she also endured a toxic workplace where she was expected to tolerate misogynistic comments, harassment, exclusion and physical abuse. In this episode, Jamie and I talk about being professional women in the workplace and how there is still a lot companies need to do to change their culture to include diversity, flexibility and transparency if they want to attract and retain the best talent; of whom women are a major part of. In fact, women are often held back because they are mothers but what makes them a great mom, makes them great leaders! Women bring to the workforce stills that benefit the workplace like being better at multitasking, listening, conflict resolution, and empathy, compared to their male counterparts. Jamie is inviting women to take a step back and look at their work and workplace through the lens of their values and what they really want in their lives. Sometimes we work so hard, we don't realize that WE aren't happy and the only one we are letting down is ourselves. Why does this even matter? Because our kids are watching and we're modeling for them what's ok and what's not. Gen Z is looking at us being mistreated and saying a big “Oh Hell NO! I'm not going to work in an environment or for a boss like that!”To help us navigate this, Jamie has prepared a “self-assessment” document to help you determine what you really want in your life and how to start to make the small changes to get you there!
