Sandra J. Horton is a well-known author and speaker who offers valuable insights and practical strategies for today's organizational challenges. As a systemic leadership sustainability strategist, she penned "Activate Success: Tips, Tools and Insights to be a Leaders in Your Niche," a book packed with 27 activators to help leaders excel in diverse situations.   Sandra's take on sustainable leadership highlights the importance of aligning values and being ready to address and adapt to rapid change. By promoting mindful, empathetic, and proactive leadership, she urges leaders to build resilience, support their teams effectively, and navigate change with clarity and ethical integrity.   Here are the highlights of our conversation:   - Leadership Requires Conscious Change Management: Sandra emphasizes that many leaders stand in a reactionary mode, making decisions under stress rather than responding thoughtfully. She advocates for leaders to raise their consciousness, pause, and assess their approach to change before reacting.   - Change Readiness: In our current environment, leaders must be prepared to navigate barriers and the moving complexities of business.   - Effective Communication in Change Management: One of the biggest reasons change initiatives fail is the lack of clear communication. Leaders must explain the ‘what and how' of change and the ‘why', ensuring alignment with team values and fostering trust.   -The Importance of Self-Awareness and Adaptability: Sandra highlights the need for leaders to understand their change tendencies. Some naturally embrace change, while others prefer stability. Leaders should be mindful of their emotional triggers and practice "pattern interruption" to control their responses.   -Creating Psychological Safety and Collaboration: Leaders should encourage curiosity, open dialogue, and co-creation in decision-making, ensuring alignment across different personality types and work styles.   - The Power of Sustainable Leadership: True leadership sustainability is about maintaining personal energy and resilience. Leaders must manage their emotional states, practice self-care, and create environments where teams can thrive without burnout.   About the guest: Sandra J. Horton is a Systemic Leadership Sustainability Strategist, Executive Coach, and Speaker, dedicated to helping CEOs, executives, and senior leaders create sustainable, high-impact leadership models that prevent burnout, build resilient teams, and drive long-term organizational success.   As the Founder of Activate Success Edge and creator of the Activate Success Roadmap, Sandra provides executive coaching, consulting, and leadership workshops that empower leaders to navigate disruption, foster adaptability, and implement systemic change. Mary Morton reveals how converting scientific research into strategic relationships revolutionized her recruitment approach. A biology major turned pharmaceutical recruiter, she leverages investor presentations and company pipelines to identify opportunities before her competitors.  This research-driven strategy and building deep client trust helped her agency thrive from its 2008 recession launch through today's market challenges. Episode Outline and Highlights [04:50] How Mary accidentally got into recruitment. [08:30] Critical foundations contributing to recruitment career longevity. [17:26] Building relationships and walking the talk: Mary's ingredients to success. [29:37] Mary is a science nerd and how she uses this quality to connect with clients. [39:43] How preparation and research in advance make it easy for May to connect with decision-makers for potential clients. [42:21] Adding value in your niche as a recruitment organization. [45:20] Quick fire questions. [49:27] Why Mary launched her podcast, MSLead Chronicles. [53:27] Mary shared one of the biggest roadblocks she had to overcome.   Critical Foundations in Billing $10M  Mary's 30+ years of experience demonstrates how becoming an industry expert enables proactive rather than reactive recruiting. Her biology degree and pharmaceutical specialization became powerful advantages in building a $10M+ billing desk. Her longevity in the industry and accomplishments in the pharmaceutical niche can be attributed to several foundational elements: Curiosity and Science-Driven Approach: She emphasized the importance of being a "nerd" about the industry you work in, highlighting her drive to learn everything about the pharmaceutical space. People-Centric Focus: While being a people person is essential, Mary combined this quality with deep industry expertise and strategic focus to excel in recruitment, a role that requires more than interpersonal skills. Relentless Drive and Discipline: Mary's strong work ethic and determination were inspired by her father, a Marine Corps officer with a 31-year career. His values of accountability, responsibility, and perseverance deeply influenced her approach to work.   These factors, combined with her adaptability, niche specialization, and focus on continuous learning, have solidified her position as a leader in the recruitment industry.   How to Add Value to Your Niche as a Recruitment Organization   “Well, if they're already niched, I think they owe it to themselves as well as to the candidates and clients that they're serving to be an expert in the space that they're niched in or that they claim to be niched in. You know, I think that's where the value comes it.” This statement summarizes Mary's mindset on adding value to your industry niche as a recruitment organization.   By investing in niche-specific knowledge and preparation, recruitment organizations can elevate their effectiveness and differentiate themselves in competitive markets. It also brings about the following benefits that Mary elaborated on in our discussion:   Enhanced Expertise and Credibility Anticipation of Objections Improved Candidate and Client Engagement Higher Placement Success Rates Efficiency in Communication Tailored Solutions Long-Term Industry Impact   One way Mary builds her credibility in her relevant niche (in addition to her longevity) is by hosting a podcast.   Comprehensive Information Gathering as Competitive Advantage  Mary's approach to information gathering goes far beyond standard job requirements. This thorough preparation becomes a key differentiator in her market. She can easily engage with potential clients' primary decision-makers, which results in optimum connection rates.   She shared the essential elements of her process:   Detailed initial client conversations beyond job descriptions Documentation of potential objections and prepared responses Collection of scientific/technical information candidates might question Market feedback about the company's reputation Preparation of selling points and challenge responses   These strategies directly contributed to Mary's ability to build a sustainable business that has thrived through multiple market downturns while maintaining premium fees averaging $50,000.   Mary Morton Bio & Contact Info   Mary began her recruiting career 30 years ago this coming March. For the last 25 years in the pharmaceutical industry. She owns SEMbio, a niche recruiting firm in field-based medical affairs, that she founded in 2008 with her longtime colleague and business partner, Nicole Evans. Going smaller to go bigger might sound counter-intuitive, but this mindset helped Tyler Rossi transform his newly launched recruitment business from zero to $250k revenue!    In this episode, you will hear Tyler's approach to niching down and the strategies that helped him win the majority of inbound clients and establish himself as one of the leading authorities in the metals and steel recruitment industry.   Tyler is the President of American Dream Search and Host of The Recruiter of Steel podcast. He's one of the top headhunters in America for sales talent in the Steel and Metals Industry.   Tyler's story is one of determination and success in the face of adversity, and I'm excited to dive into his experiences and insights today.   Episode Outline and Highlights   [01:55] How Tyler got into recruitment and why he chose metals as a niche. [08:07] Tyler's story of resilience - getting laid off from a six-digit sales job while his wife was 32 weeks pregnant. [12:44] Difficulties of the first six months of a recruitment business and how niching down became a game-changer. [17:37] Getting the first client via LinkedIn Automation - Tyler shares his tech stack. [20:17] Turning it around from zero to $250k - discussion on business development. [23:53] How to establish yourself as the go-to authority in your niche. [30:57] Podcasting is an effective engagement tool to go above and beyond. [38:39] A creative way of using videos to promote your client and strengthen relationships. [43:55] Work and life integration: How many hours does Tyler work a day to take care of their daughter? [46:01] What is next for Tyler and American Dream Search?   Go Smaller to Go Bigger - Top Benefits of Niching Down to a Specific Industry   When Tyler attempted to broaden his scope as a sales recruiter - he felt overwhelmed and things did not work out. He recalled how he already established his network in the steel industry and decided to focus on this niche. It was indeed a game-changer for Tyler!    His conclusion is “The riches are in the niches!” He highlighted below benefits and how niching down worked for him:   Reduced Competition: By focusing on the steel industry, he reduced his competition from 26,000 recruiters in the US to only around five competitors in the same industry in his domain. Authority Building: It was easier for Tyler to add value to the industry and be an established figure in the steel industry through continuous sharing of content and podcasting. Higher Demand: Targeting a specialized industry can lead clients to view you as a high-value resource, as you bring industry-specific knowledge and connections. Even if you only place 10 candidates in a year with an average of $25k fee, you already have substantial revenue. Efficient Networking: Focusing on a niche simplifies networking efforts. Tyler concentrates on key decision-makers and candidates via targeted marketing and MPC.   How to Establish Yourself as the Go-To Expert in Your Niche   Tyler's reputation grew as he focused on the metal and steel sector, allowing him to generate trust and recognition in the metals industry. He started his podcast, The Recruiter of Steel, to bring added value to the industry. He also utilized LinkedIn by consistently posting content related to the industry which has gained traction, especially to decision-makers. Out of his 7000 connections, around 75% are in the metal and steel industry.   Consistency in these actions made Tyler a recognizable authority in his niche. As he shared, “As far as an ROI … I would say the majority of my business now, I would say is inbound. Most of it is coming inbound to me. I haven't run an MPC campaign in probably three, or four months because all of this is coming to me and I have enough business with it. It's because I've established myself as that authority. It's brought in multiple six figures for me just doing posting and just interacting on LinkedIn.”   Other Action Items That Turned Around His Business   The first six months of Tyler's business brought in no revenue. However, he had a breakthrough that transformed it from zero to a $250k profit. That is niching down, and establishing himself as an authority. However, there are also other action items he shared that helped him, which I am sure a lot of listeners can relate to:   Full Commitment and Resilience: When Tyler was laid off, he committed entirely to his recruitment business, even though it took six months of effort without income to gain traction.   Mentorship and Continuous Learning: Seeking guidance, Tyler connected with Scott Tuttle, a successful recruiter who provided critical advice on areas like contract terms and marketing strategies. This mentorship helped Tyler refine his approach, close deals, and streamline his operations.   Effective Use of Technology: Tyler used a tailored tech stack, including LinkedIn automation through Skylead, Sales Navigator, Apollo for marketing, and Crelate for CRM management. These tools allowed him to be targeted and efficient in his outreach, helping him reach the right clients and candidates without resorting to mass emails.   Tyler Rossi Bio and Contact Info   Tyler Rossi is the President of American Dream Search and Host of the Let's Talk Talent podcast (now rebranded as The Recruiter of Steel podcast). He is one of the top headhunters in America for sales talent in the Steel/Metals Industry.   But it wasn't always this way.    For the longest time, Tyler put off going into business full-time. While he had his LLC on the side, Tyler never had the guts to go all in. He had the six-figure tech sales job and the job security and benefits that came with it.  He had the house, and the marriage, and his daughter was soon on the way.    Fast forward to September of 2023, Tyler was forced to take the leap of faith he was putting off for so long. He was abruptly laid off from his job. There was no warning, no severance…nothing.    Six-figure paycheck? Poof

Why do we find SEO so difficult? Barb Davids tells us it really isn't!We misunderstand SEO but it's really not rocket science. It matches up closely with our content marketing and is not going anywhere anytime soon. -       Organic lead gen and SEODon't just publish a website and expect people to find it. Use a blogpost strategy and bake lead magnets into them. Build out an e-mail list in exchange for the free asset. -       Free and paid keyword research toolsThere are lots of free tools that have daily limits. Keywords planner exists inside Google ads and is an independent tool. It doesn't give you info on number of searches. Keywords everywhere is a chrome extension and you can buy up to 10 credits. You get info on the competition level and you see the top keywords for any page. Make sure you know WHO you are targeting and exactly WHAT phrases those prospects are using. You can then look at the ranking of those phrases to work out what to talk about in your blog content. -       Google indexingUse site:yourdomain.com to view your site map and the H1-H6 headings and meta descriptions for your website. My own google sitemap is site:entrepreneurialtranslator.com. I now have almost 200 pages indexed. Write blogposts at least 800 words long (better still 1000-1200 words). Don't forget to add keywords to your image alt text field. I use the Yoast plugin for my own website. Book recommendationSimple marketing for smart people by Billy Broas Want to kickstart your own SEO strategy? Remember what I always say, everything comes downstream of lead generation (no leads means no sales). A big myth to bust is that quizzes are all fluff and all about questions like What kind of Disney princess are you?Wrong! Quizzes are excellent to build out a robust sales funnel, teach people something new and gets people thinking of their next step along their business journey. They can be used in varying shapes and forms but it really depends on the type of business and ideal target customer (avatar). e.g. an online presence agency working for busy tradespersons would be the intermediary quiz designers. A quiz benefits both the person taking the quiz and helps them take a step forward in their business journeys by breaking down barriers and crushing objections. For the quiz provider it helps us attract the right clients, repel the wrong clients and segment the client pool. The quiz can offer what people need right now in their business journey.Tools and links mentioned in this episode: Otter software for transcribing audioConvert box for website popupsFreelance writers online website (snoop the site's paid jobs page)If you haven't already done so take my own freelance translator quiz here (takes under 3 minutes) Want to design your own audience quiz? 100 episodes! What a milestone. In the beginning, I really wasn't sure what would happen. I knew that I wanted to try podcasting but I had no idea what to expect. However, once I knew that it would be something I would enjoy and that it would be a great way to connect with you, I committed, and here we are two years later!  In this episode, I talk about the whole experience from the start to the present moment. I share my learning curves, my process, and any tips for you - if you are thinking about doing this too. Thanks for joining me on this journey, and here's to another year of the Fearless Practice podcast!  In this Episode: Why I started this podcast  Creating the podcast  The pros and cons   Lessons I have learned  Why I started this podcast  There were many reasons why I was considering doing this podcast:  Would it help my consulting business?  Would I enjoy recording every single week? Finding other like-minded therapists to connect and talk with  Creating the podcast  Once I experimented a little, I knew that I was ready to give it a try! So I:  Took a course in podcasting  Decided on the intro music  Found a sound editor  Hired a designer for the podcast cards  Hired a copywriter to write show notes  In many ways, running this podcast is like a second job. In order for me to publish the podcast episodes that you listen to each Wednesday, the process looks a little like this:  Brainstorming the idea for each episode  Finding counsellors to interview Organizing points for each topic per episode  Recording the podcast either as a solo show or in an interview  Sending the the sound editor the audio  Listening to the podcast myself to make my own edits  Sending the audio to the copywriter for the the show notes to be written Editing the show notes myself Sending quotes and titles to my designer for the cards for the episode  Having the social media manager create posts for the podcast  Sending the final products to my editor to schedule it for publishing  The pros and cons  When I started this podcast I thought it would take maybe an hour or two a week, but as you can see, it's a much longer process!  Despite the long hours and financial investment, I'm so glad that I also get the chance to meet so many great Canadian therapists! And I'm grateful to those who have invested in my work and purchased from my store.  Lessons I have learned  Some of the things I now know about podcasting are that:  It really helps to have a great team around you  You will need to put in effort and energy to make it great  It's going to be an investment so make sure you have money saved up or coming in so that you can make it work  You can create community through a podcast, and it's a wonderful way to connect with other therapists in your area!  On the note of community, I want to know how I can help you so that I can keep creating content that serves your needs. Most professionals that I work with in the online space for the face of their brand. They are a personal brand. Meaning that they have to cultivate a brand based around themselves, their ideal, client, and the problems that they solve or their area of focus.  Your brand started before it was a brand. Especially in that it is a personal brand, parts of your life are going to be integrated into it.  I touched on this with your brand story and Becoming an Authority in Your Niche in Episode 222. There is a reason that you work for yourself, and the reason that you have the philosophies that you do. Today's episode is about identifying the journey that got you to where you are, being able to articulate that, and then continuing to establish your brand. Let's be clear in that all of this is applies to all personal brand copy and content in free form - email, social, search based platforms. Compelling - aka CONNECTIVE  without the human piece, you have a weak personal brand Messaging people want to consume, is helpful and keeps them coming back. Your story is STICKY. What does your brand focus on from a problem perspective? what do you give people? What tips do you provide? What do you make easier or more doable for your consumers? What does your brand stand for? Aka what do you also stand for in the confines of your industry and area of focus? what's a go and what's a no? Identify both. We do this heavily inside the social media module of FitsPRO foundations your code of conduct CLARITY is compelling Think of brands you follow or buy from Documentaries you watch There's a clear story line. Clear messaging. And it lands with you. Your personal brand will grow and evolve over time. More than a non-personal brand. Be okay with that. you'll add experiences and clarity. The HUMAN piece is where the change will likely happen You'll rack up new stories and build upon old ones TELL YOUR STORY. See what happens. In this episode, you'll also hear:4 benefits of writing guest blog posts for popular blogs5 steps to crafting a compelling guest postWhat to do after your guest post is accepted and publishedFree training: 3 steps to successfully keep your book at #1 on AmazonIn Revive Your Book Sales Part 4, we discussed the value of creating buzz on social media. But while social media is undoubtedly a powerful tool for promoting your work, constantly pushing your content can seem egocentric and damage your brand. That's where effective strategies for using social media in a meaningful way come in. So if you missed Part 4, be sure to check it out! Now, let's dive into the next game-changing strategy: writing guest blog posts on popular blogs in your niche. Benefits of Writing Guest Blog PostsSuppose you notice that most of your prospective readers are subscribed to a particular blog, and you write a guest post for that blog. Wouldn't that be a fabulous way to introduce yourself and your book to that audience? Once readers discover the value you provide through your guest posts, they will start to trust you and may even buy your book. Here are some other benefits of writing guest blog posts on popular blogs:Credibility: The publishing industry has become quite competitive, and readers want to know that the authors they are reading can provide value to them. That means credibility is everything when it comes to publishing. And if you've been featured in a popular blog with a well-written post, it will go a long way to building your credibility. Backlinks: When you write a guest post for a popular blog, they're likely to link back to your website or blog page. This signals to search engines that your website is reputable and valuable. Now your website is moving up in the search rankings, which means more traffic — A.K.A. more visitors — to your page.Relationships: One guest posting strategy is to reach out to other authors who have established themselves in your niche and request a guest post exchange. Then, you can provide value for their audience, and they can do the same for yours. By building relationships with other authors, you grow your network, which can result in more opportunities for you to promote your work. Relevance: By writing guest blog posts that are informative and tailored to your target audience, you can become known as an expert in your field. The key is providing valuable insights that will help your readers. This keeps you relevant to the audience and makes them want to learn more about you and your book. Writing guest blog posts on popular blogs is an excellent strategy for Christian authors who want to get their books in front of their target audience. Not only does it expand your reach, but it boosts your credibility, gets you valuable backlinks, helps you establish professional relationships, and keeps you relevant. By providing valuable insights to readers through your guest posts, you can generate interest in your book that ultimately leads to more sales. 5 Steps to a Compelling Guest PostNot sure where to start with writing guest blog posts? Let's break down the process of publishing and promoting a compelling post to attract readers to your book. It all comes down to five simple steps.  1. Research Popular Blogs in Your Niche.  Before you start actually writing guest blog posts, you want to find the right blogs to target. Search for blogs that are relevant to your book's topic and that have a large following. Then, make a list of those potential blogs and read their guest post guidelines carefully. This will give you an idea of what types of posts they are looking for and how to pitch your idea. Remember, your post must be aligned with the blog's audience and add value to its readers.  2. Craft an Irresistible Pitch.  Once you've found the right blog, it's time to pitch your idea. The pitch needs to be concise, to the point, and attention-grabbing. Start by introducing yourself and your book, and explain to the editor why your post would benefit their readers. Make sure to highlight your unique selling proposition and how your message is different from other authors. And don't forget to follow up to increase your chances of getting a reply. 3. Write a Compelling Guest Post.  Congratulations, your pitch has been accepted! Now it's time to write a post that captivates readers and drives traffic to your book. Your post must be well-researched, informative, and entertaining. Start with a compelling headline that grabs the reader's attention and entices them to read more. Structure your post with an introduction, body, and conclusion, and use subheadings to make it easier to read. Don't forget to include a call to action at the end of your post, inviting readers to learn more about you and your book.  4. Promote Your Guest Post.  Now your guest post is published, and that's great — but your work doesn't stop there. You need to promote the post to increase visibility and drive traffic back to your website or book page. Share your post on social media as an additional way to add value to your followers. Engage with readers who comment on your posts, and answer any questions they may have. Remember, this is your chance to build relationships with new readers and turn them into loyal fans.  5. Measure Your Success and Repeat.  Don't forget to actually see how your guest post performs! To do this, check your website analytics and find out how traffic was generated. If your post performs well, consider writing more guest posts on similar blogs. This will increase your visibility and improve your authority as an author in your niche. Writing guest blog posts on popular blogs is an excellent way to promote your book, build relationships with new readers, and increase your visibility. Just remember to research the right blogs, craft an irresistible pitch, write a compelling post, promote that post, and then measure your success. Keep writing helpful, informative content, and soon you'll find that guest posting is a great tool in your author marketing toolkit. You'll create a strong online presence, grow your authority, and ultimately boost your book sales. So what are you waiting for? Start reaching out to those blogs, and start writing your way to success!3 Ingredients to Success on AmazonAre you a Christian author seeking to make a real impact?
