He is on the podcast to talk about his new book, Faith in the Son of God: The Place of Christ-Oriented Faith within Pauline Theology, an academic defense of justification by faith that carries significant implications for the lay Christian. The book is a broad study of faith in Christ in Paul's theology, set in the context of the pistis Christou debate. Pistis Christou is a phrase that appears eight times in the Pauline letters. Because the phrase is ambiguous in the original Greek a debate has arisen among scholars as to the meaning. Why is there a debate about this term? How did it come about? What is really at stake here? Listen as Kevin makes a strong defense of his position!

This week, Pastor Pruitt and Professor Trueman sit down to chat about the encouraging outcomes of this year's PCA General Assembly. What happened at the GA that is giving Todd such encouragement about the future of the denomination? (It's been well-documented that Carl couldn't care less!) Todd explains the dynamics inside a denomination comprised of tribes (as some have called them) that have different interests and goals for the future. For example, some are committed to reforming Presbyterianism and its distinctives, while others see a more progressive kind of evangelicalism for the PCA.Todd reviews the overtures voted on at the Assembly and what they mean in the big picture. Overall, it's an encouraging affirmation of biblical standards and reformed doctrine.

That guest is Catherine Stewart, and she's the editor ofSurviving the Fishbowl: Letters to Pastor's Kids.Catherine reveals what motivated her to lead the project, assembling an exceptional host of contributors. There is no doubt that pastor's kids face many unique challenges just for being PKs." Catherine reminds us that there is also great joy and opportunities for growth as they learn to love and serve the church. How should pastors and their wives talk to their kids about the occasional difficulties and discouragement that are part of pastoral ministry? On the other hand, how can the church be mindful and supportive of the pastor's kids?

Anthony also has extensive experience serving as a pastor, church planter, and missionary worldwide, all of which qualifies him as the ideal guest for today's conversation. Dr. Curto discusses his experience building a ministry from the ground upquite literally laying down the bricks of a theological college's foundation before developing the curriculum, forming pastors, then helping them to plant churches. If that doesn't sound challenging enough, imagine needing to learn the local cultural background, vocabulary, and beliefs before being able to teach the philosophy of theology to the locals!

Craig Carter is research professor of theology at Tyndale University and theologian in residence at Westney Heights Baptist Church in Ajax, Ontario. Craig is renowned for producing some very fine work on recovering Trinitarian classical theism and classical metaphysics. His newest book is Contemplating God with the Great Tradition, the follow-up volume to2018's InterpretingScripture with the Great Tradition. Dr. Carter grounds his theological argument for this book on the doctrine of God as expounded in the book of Isaiah. Why is this section so critical for the retrieval of classical theism in the Protestant tradition and what is its correlation to the Nicene Creed? What exactly is classical theism, and from whom does it encounter resistance? Some may say that classical theism doesn't preach, meaning that it's irrelevant and impractical for the Christian life. Find out why the professor politely disagrees, today on Mortification of Spin!

Gribben has written An Introduction to John Owen: A Christian Vision for Every Stage of Life, and today he shares with us why it is worth getting to know Owen. In his book, Gribben strives to reclaim John Owen for the ordinary Christian. For many, Owen is perceived as a non-relatable, high-level Puritan intellectual concerned about the minutia of theology. Gribben is committed to revealing the pastoral side of Owen and his manner of preaching and teachinghow he dealt with the ordinary daily affairs of his congregantsand the struggles in his own personal life, including the loss of his first wife and all his ten children. What was Owen’s distinctive contribution, and how can we apply it to our lives today?

Megan joins Jonathan Master and James Dolezal for a discussion about discontentment. It's a real issue of the heart, and no one is immune. Why does it seem that the more we have, the more we desire? Can we affirm that discontentment is at the heart of every other sin? Megan has a few suggestions of practices and meditations to orient our desires and to help us cultivate thankfulness and contentment.
Podcast Wednesday is upon us and the Academy Awards inch ever closer. Today Mike and Matt chat about a revenge film that is nominated for Best Picture, Promising Young Woman starring Carey Mulligan. Additional topics include violent video games, baseball, and Idiocracy. This is a very unique film to be nominated for Best Picture. It is not a bad film, it is a very good film, just extremely dark and continues down that path all the way to the credits. In act two of Promising Young Woman you get a glimpse of redemption. Our protagonist sees a light at the end of the tunnel but it is quickly extinguished. Carey Mulligan and Bo Burnham did an excellent job along with their supporting cast. This film is not for the faint of heart but is well worth the watch. Is it the pick for Best Picture 2021, Mike Talent sure thinks so, awarding it 4.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt on the other hand enjoyed Promising Young Woman but doesn’t think it deserved to be nominated. He awards the revenge thriller 3 out of 5 Reels. Next week the Academy Awards are over and so is our Best Picture catch-up. We missed a few films but will revisit some of them in the future especially the Best Picture 2021 winner. Matt picked next week's review. The brand new film reboot of the super popular violent video game Mortal Kombat. It will be available on HBO Max and at your local movie theater so you can watch it with us. Thank you for supporting our podcast and we will chat at you next week. Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 233 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Pure actorial and directorial treats for you this week, a real powerhouse flooded with gems and gold nuggets… People, Pip is joined by DESIREE AKHAVAN!Gems and gold nuggets all over the place. A real pleasure of a chat, as Desiree talks openly and honestly about every aspect of her creative process and inspiration, moving so gracefully from one angle to the next. You may know her from 2015’s ’Appropriate Behaviour’, or maybe more recently 2018’s ’The Miseducation Of Cameron Post’, both of which received and are in the process of receiving excellent reviews - either way, you are most definitely about to know her even more personally with the release of her new series ‘The Bisexual’, on Channel 4 this week! If you’re reading this on Podcast Wednesday, that means TONIGHT!So indulge in this fascinating chat as Desiree goes into her Iranian-American heritage, her early playwright longings and how Iranian characters often fall into either the victim or villain category, the reinvention of narrative structure, how accurate her view of Britain is from an American perspective, how weird it is to write about love and where exes play into the mixture, life in London, her previous films including the acting maturity of ‘…Cameron Post’s Chloë Grace Moretz, honesty and preservation of dignity and not making films based around the traditional male gaze, a theory from Pip about French cinema, Desiree’s confidence in the cast and the freedom this grants and some good old fashioned social media talk. Glorious. Hello all, we think the podcast has been getting a little lax since we started doing them on Skype. It was the only way to keep them going due to logistical issues finding time to meet up, especially now Rich has more of a social life. Recording the podcasts live and in the same room has more energy, more 'je ne sais quoi', more laughs, for you and for us. So it would be better to record them in batches like we used to and release them when we have them rather than slavishly record lesser quality podcasts in order to hit a deadline. We needed a live episode, one which would see us go out on a bang, one set in a German bar in Munich during a Stag Do, yes, that would do nicely. Enjoy. The twitter feed will continue in it's haphazard approach, the website will be brought up to date and the android app too. There is even another single in the pipeline! Thank you so much for listening to us thus far. There will be more. So until next Podcast Wednesday (hopefully not too far away) That's it for now..... we'll think of some more.
