An evening ice skating party begins at 7:00 p.m. and shortly after the party begins, participants will have the opportunity to launch a sky lantern.  Skate rentals, hot chocolate, and snacks are all available at the community ice skating rink at Tonkin Stadium. Skate rental and lantern packages are $8, or you can pay $10 for skate rental, lantern, 1 snack, and 1 drink. The event will serve as a fundraiser for Central Wyoming College's Entrada Club. The 2nd annual Winter Rendezvous Games are set for Saturday, February 1st from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Local businesses, organizations, neighbors, and friends are encouraged to get together a team of 4-6 people to compete in a variety of tasks. Returning this year are the vehicle push/pull contest, ice carving and snowman building, tug-of-war, eating contest, sled building, obstacle course, and snowball toss events.  2019's winter games inspired a summer event as well, so technically this is the third event of its kind at City Park, but the second winter focused one. The squad from Rocky Mountain Logistics were crowned champions in both the inaugural winter and summer games. An opening ceremony is set for Friday, January 31st and will feature introductions of the participating teams and a sky lantern launch from City Park. The opening ceremony and the games themselves are free and open to the public. So even if you can't, or don't want to participate, you can enjoy the community spirit and cheer on your neighbors. At this time last year, Make-A-Wish Wyoming had 38 wish kids, so early 2020 has seen a significant increase. Morgan attributes some of the increase to the fact that more people are aware of what Make-A-Wish Wyoming is doing. Currently there is a large demand for help through volunteering, financial contributions, and other donations. Poloncic explained that many of the wishes include travel, so airline miles are a large help. Residents with "expertise" in certain fields are needed as well. Currently, in Fremont County, Make-A-Wish is looking for someone who can help in vehicle restoration. Statewide, there's a large demand for folks in the construction field to help out. The group was formed to help create education and awareness for missing, exploited, and murdered indigenous women and children. Slowly, but steadily, more light is being shed on this epidemic across the nation and continent. As the common mission continues to increase in popularity through several groups, Not Our Native Daughters, gains exponentially more attention as well. Not Our Native Daughters was invited to attend the 2020 Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day in Pasadena, California. The 131st parade paid honor to the 100th year celebration of women's right to vote, so naturally Wyoming was where the parade committee looked for ideas. As the common mission continues to increase in popularity through several groups, Not Our Native Daughters, gains exponentially more attention as well. Not Our Native Daughters was invited to attend the 2020 Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day in Pasadena, California. The 131st parade paid honor to the 100th year celebration of women's right to vote, so naturally Wyoming was where the parade committee looked for ideas. Lynette discusses the experience, publicity for Not Our Native Daughters this created, and how being in the Rose Parade specifically was a goal for her on the County 10 Podcast. Likely, you really wanted a new car, were worried at high school's social hierarchy, and trying to figure out your life goals. Taylor Romans is not that typical 16-year-old. Sure she's got big plans, and she may want a car... we didn't discuss that part, but she has been working all year to honor Lander-area veterans and to make her community a better place. Taylor describes herself as very patriotic. It's well deserved after the Tigers rolled to a 58-40 state championship game win in March over Powell. The win was their first basketball title since 2008. LVHS has several returning contributors to that state championship team, but some newcomers that coach Stuart Mullins is excited about, too. It's well deserved after the Tigers rolled to a 58-40 state championship game win in March over Powell. The win was their first basketball title since 2008. LVHS has several returning contributors to that state championship team, but some newcomers that coach Stuart Mullins is excited about, too. We had the opportunity to visit with Coach Mullins about the first few weeks of practice, pressure of defending a state championship, and this weekend's East-West Challenge Tournament. Chiefs basketball season begins Friday as they participate in the Burns Winter Classic, hosted by Burns High School. Both the Chiefs and Lady Chiefs are looking to repeat as 2A state champions this year. While both boys and girls teams have been very successful in the past, they had never won championships in the same year... until March 2019. "It's what we do, basketball is a part of Native American current history." Ferris explained.  "It's something that has become a part of our history. It's what kids want to do, it's what they enjoy. Everybody has a drive, something that they love, their hobby they sacrifice for. That's what basketball is for our Reservation and for Native Americans in general." Basketball is important to many around Wyoming Indian High School. But Ferris tells us on the County 10 Podcast it's about much more than the game. Bonding with teammates, creating experiences, and using the desire to play basketball to help push students in the classroom is all part of his plan to create, not only state champions, but well-rounded young people. A conversation between Jib Ellison & Fletcher Harper. Fletcher Harper, an Episcopal priest, is Executive Director of GreenFaith, an international interfaith environmental organization. He has developed a range of innovative programs to make GreenFaith a global leader in the religious-environmental movement. In the past four years, he coordinated the 2015 OurVoices campaign, which mobilized religious support globally for COP 21, led organizing of faith communities for the People’s Climate Marches in NYC and Washington DC, helped lead the faith-based fossil fuel divestment movement, supported the launch of the global Interfaith Rainforest Initiative, and co-founded Shine, a faith-philanthropy-NGO campaign to end energy poverty with renewable energy by 2030. He helps lead GreenFaith’s new local organizing initiative, creating multi-faith GreenFaith Circles in local communities globally. Fletcher accepted GreenFaith’s Many Faith’s, one Earth Award from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in 2009 and was named an Ashoka Fellow in 2011. He is the author of GreenFaith: Mobilizing God’s People to Protect the Earth (Abingdon Press, March 2015).
