The bestselling author delves into the twisted crimes of Wayne Adam Ford.“This kind of frightening and fascinating glimpse into a killer's mind is rare.” —Ron Franscell, New York Times–bestselling author On a chilly November afternoon in 1998, a tearful 36-year-old man walked into the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department in Eureka, California, and confessed to something horrible. “I hurt some people,” he said. Inside his pocket was the ghastly proof of his statement. But there was more to Wayne Adam Ford than the trail of mangled victims he left behind. More, even, than the twisted predator inside, which drove him to increasingly perverse sexual appetites. Pulitzer Prize–nominated author Caitlin Rother draws on previously sealed testimony, interviews with the key players in the case, and the killer's shocking confession to explore the demons that drove a damaged man to his unspeakable crimes. Her book is a harrowing psychological portrait and a haunting, unforgettable true-life thriller. Includes dramatic photos “Page-turning excitement and blood-curdling terror . . . Riveting, fast-paced, and sure to keep you up at night.” —M. William Phelps, New York Times–bestselling author “Shocking, chilling, fast-paced . . . A book crime aficionados will be loath to put down.” —Simon Read, author of The Iron Sea “Rother has produced a superior study of a serial killer and his lost and lonely victims.” —Carol Anne Davis, author of Couples Who Kill “A must-read . . . Well-written, extremely intense; a book that I could not put down.” —True Crime Book ReviewsSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. The Crime That Changed Casper, Wyoming - When 18-year-old Becky Burridge and her 11-year-old sister Amy drove to the grocery store in quiet Casper, Wyoming they never could have predicted what would happen next. After Becky's car got a flat-tire on their trip home, the sisters accepted a ride from two strangers that would lead to abduction, rape, and murder and end in a horrific tragedy that would haunt their town forever. Ron Franscell was the girls' neighbor at the time; his account of the events that rocked Casper, Wyoming that day in 1973 will grip The 'X' Zone Nation today and leave them shocked at the brutality of the girls' abductors. Franscell is a journalist whose work regularly appears in the Washington Post, Chicago Sun-Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Denver Post, San Jose Mercury-News, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He is the author of "The Darkest Night."Now listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewpaper.com
"Ron Franscell's 'Deaf Row' tells a darkly engrossing story with masterful, easy-flowing prose and a clever infusion of humor. The tension builds incrementally to a chilling five-star climax in which Franscell puts his well-honed skill as a true crime author to good use. It gave me goosebumps big time." —ANNE HILLERMAN, bestselling author of the Leaphorn, Chee, Manuelito mysteries "A line-up that begs to be part of a movie. Author Ron Franscell, who writes both fiction and nonfiction, creates an endearing group of old men in a gripping story of a psychotic killer." — DENVER POST "I'm a big fan of Ron Franscell's works and I consider them 'can't-miss' crime books." —CJ BOX, #1 New York Times bestselling author of LONG RANGE and THE HIGHWAY "As you read along, be sure to dog-ear the pages bursting with Franscell's gritty descriptions - a sentence, a paragraph or a page - of the silver-haired people and the gray places of rural Colorado in this raw, wintry crime novel." —ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL "A first-class mystery!" —JORDAN RICH, host at WBZ-AM/Boston "DEAF ROW is a self-aware, clever police procedural with a riveting climax, but what truly sets this mystery apart is its wonderfully realized characters. Franscell explores struggles with aging, death and friendship with poignant prose, humor and affection and has given us yet another gem of a book that's impossible to put down. I fell in love with these guys in DEAF ROW!" —CHRISTINE CARBO, bestselling author of A SHARP SOLITUDE "Ron Franscell is well-known and justly revered for his brilliant, often elegant and always suspenseful non-fiction, but with DEAF ROW he breaks new ground and creates an immediately unforgettable new fictional character — Mountain Bell — who takes his place right near the top in the pantheon of thriller heroes. If you haven't yet read Franscell, this is a fantastic place to start, in a novel of shattering power and a mystery that will take your breath away. Highly recommended!" —JOHN LESCROART, author of 19 NYTimes bestsellers, including THE 13th JUROR and THE MISSING PIECE "...an undisputed gift for storytelling." —GREGG OLSEN, #1 New York Times bestselling author of IF YOU TELL "A solid mystery that will keep readers rooting for [Woodrow] Bell and his band of retirees. For fans of Craig Johnson, CJ Box and Meg Gardiner." —LIBRARY JOURNAL "A fantastic whodunit, but that's only part of what makes it so good ... it's also a story about aging, redemption, friendship, and connection. Finishing DEAF ROW was bittersweet; satisfying, yet like saying goodbye to a group of folks I'd come to care about like family." —OIL CITY NEWS, Casper WY "By the second paragraph of Deaf Row, I was invested. ... I can't say enough about Deaf Row, except that I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Ron Franscell is one of our finest modern literary masters and this book proves it." —Robert Waters' KIDNAPPING, MURDER & MAYHEM BLOG "A stroke of genius ... I fell in love with these characters." —TIM DENNIS, host at Darkness Radio "Horrifying and hysterical! Smart writing and colorful characters from one of crime's best storytellers." —MYSTERYVOX From the Author "In the end, DEAF ROW is a classical mystery but it also dives into the lives of old people whose best days are behind them, whom we see every day but no longer actually notice. It's been either the blessing or the curse of my book-writing career: I just don't want to do it like everybody else is doing it. I blended journalism and novel technique in my true crime, and in DEAF ROW, I wanted to blend commercial crime fiction with a kind of literary exploration of men who have outlived their best days and who are now growing invisible to the rest of the world. So, yeah, DEAF ROW is an up-market fiction that should appeal to both suspense fans and to fans of more literary storytelling."
Acclaimed true-crime writer Ron Franscell is back, this time with a thrilling novel about a cold case murder, taken on by a retired homicide cop and a gang of his colorful old geezer friends. “Deaf Row” is a first class mystery replete with unforgettable characters and mind blowing twists. Los Angeles is where America's dreams and nightmares got all tangled up. In this otherworldly place of seemingly everlasting life, death could have an otherworldly quality, too. In a city where anything was possible, even the ghastly could happen. Where else does a list of a city's top five most recognized citizens include a mass murderer? Stand in the footsteps of Manson, the Hillside Strangler, the Night Stalker, the Black Dahlia's killer, and the Onion Field slayers. Visit crime scenes where Hollywood's weird history took fatal turns for O.J. Simpson, John Belushi, Ramon Novarro, Phil Hartman, Dorothy Stratten, Sal Mineo, and so many others. This book provides a sunset cruise through a place where ordinary inhumanities are entertainment—with GPS coordinates, photos and more. It continues the series that critics, true-crime fans, historians, and travelers have hailed as “thorough and unflinching” and “the best damn crime travel series ever published!” Dozens of fascinating stories are told in the same fast-paced, enthralling voice that's made Ron Franscell one of America's most beloved crime writers—and the Crime Buff's Guides a three-time winner of TrueCrimeZine.com's Book of the Year.
"The pulse-pounding story of the first time in history that the FBI Behavioral Unit created a profile to catch a serial killer. On June 25, 1973, a seven-year-old girl went missing from the Montana campground where her family was vacationing. Somebody had slit open the back of her tent and snatched her from under their noses. None of them saw or heard anything. Susie Jaeger had vanished into thin air, plucked by a shadow. The largest manhunt in Montana's history ensued, led by the FBI. As days stretched into weeks, and weeks into months, Special Agent Pete Dunbar attended a workshop at FBI headquarters in Quantico led by two agents who had hatched a radical new idea: What if criminals left a psychological trail that would lead us to them? Patrick Mullany, a trained psychologist, and Howard Teten, a veteran criminologist, had created the Behavioral Science Unit to explore this new voodoo they called "criminal profiling." At Dunbar's request, Mullany and Teten built the FBI's first profile of an unknown subject: the UnSub who had snatched Susie Jaeger and, a few months later, a 19-year-old waitress. They deduced that he was a white twentysomething who'd grown up without a father; an intelligent, local loner who had served in the military. They predicted he would contact Susie's parents on the anniversary of her murder, and when caught would attempt suicide. When David Meirhofer was arrested fifteen months after Susie's abduction, and confessed to four murders, the profile fit him to a T"--

The gas station attendant was helping him fill up his car. What timing. It was a hot summer's day, the sweat trickled down his forehead, and he was anxious to get going. The two of them stood awkwardly at the back of his truck waiting for his tank to get full. Drip. Drip. Drip. “Sir, I think your car is leaking.” They both looked down to see a red liquid drip down onto the pavement. The gas attendant didn't know that there were 3 bodies in the trunk - and the driver was going to keep it that way. The FBI has been developing and providing profiles on unknown subjects — or unsubs — for last 50 years using science. There's a new book that describes the very first profile of an unknown subject. Shadow Man: An Elusive Psycho Killer and the Birth of FBI Profiling by true crime writer and novelist Ron Franscell, tells the story of David Meyerhofer, a Montana man who killed four people in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The FBI and police were unable to track down the killer for years and although the never used before profile didn't solve the crime, it was very accurate in describing Meyerhofer. Ron Francell discusses this fascinating case on Tuesday's Smart Talk. Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On June 25th, 1973, Suzie Jaeger was abducted from her tent while camping with her family in Montana. The FBI was baffled by the mystery, until two agents began using new profiling techniques to narrow in on a local oddball named David Meirhofer. Assisting them was Suzie's brave mother, Marietta Jaeger, who over a series of phone calls with the killer was able to provide invaluable clues that helped lead to Meirhofer's arrest and confession. And he would confess not only to Suzie's murder, but the murder of three other people as well. My guest is bestselling author Ron Franscell. His new book is called "ShadowMan: An Elusive Psycho Killer and the Birth of FBI Profiling". More information about the author and his work can be found here: https://ronfranscell.com/

Would you kill for love? True-crime master Ron Franscell tells the grisly story of a loving couple who killed at least four and lived happily ever after--while cops desperately tried for decades to piece together a petrifying tale of murder and secrets. The appalling details are made even more vivid by the author's familiarity with the Wyoming times and places that formed the backdrop of his national bestseller The Darkest Night. After Alice, a desperate young mother in a gritty Wyoming boomtown kills her husband in 1974 and dumps his body where it will never be found, she slips away and starts a new life with a new love. But when her new love's ex-wife and two kids start demanding more of him, Alice delivers an ultimatum: Fix the problem or lose her forever. With Alice's help, he "fixes" the problem in an extraordinarily ghastly way ... and they live happily ever after. That is, until 2013, almost forty years later, when somebody finds a dead man's skeleton in a place where Alice thought he'd never be found. Featuring a femme fatale whose manipulative, cold-blooded character rivals Lady Macbeth, this page-turner by bestselling true-crime author Ron Franscell revisits a shocking cold case that was finally solved just when the murderers thought they'd never be caught.

Would you kill for love? True-crime master Ron Franscell tells the grisly story of Alice and Gerald Uden, a loving couple who murdered at least four people, and live happily ever after--while cops try for decades to piece together a petrifying tale of murder and secrets. The appalling details are made even more vivid by the author's familiarity with the Wyoming times and places that formed the backdrop of his national bestseller The Darkest Night. In 1974, Alice, a desperate young mother in a gritty Wyoming boomtown, kills her husband and dumps his body where it will never be found, then slips away and starts a new life. But when her new man's ex-wife and two kids start demanding more of him, Alice delivers an ultimatum: Fix the problem or lose her forever. With Alice's help, Gerald "fixes" the problem in an extraordinarily ghastly way . . . and they live happily ever after. That is, until 2013,almost forty years later, when somebody finds a dead man's skeleton in a place where Alice thought he'd never be found. This page-turner by bestselling true-crime author Ron Franscell revisits a shocking cold case that was finally solved just when the murderers thought they'd never be caught. This was Ron's first visit to the show, and he is so compelling in his storytelling, you will understand why we always love having him on the program. Casper, Wyoming:1973. Eleven-year-old Amy Burridge rides with her eighteen-year-old sister, Becky, to the grocery store. When they finish their shopping, Becky’s car gets a flat tire. Two men politely offer them a ride home. But they were anything but Good Samaritans. The girls would suffer unspeakable crimes at the hands of these men before being thrown from a bridge into the North Platte River. One miraculously survived. The other did not. Years later, author and journalist Ron Franscell—who lived in Casper at the time of the crime, and was a friend to Amy and Becky—can’t forget Wyoming’s most shocking story of abduction, rape, and murder. Neither could Becky, the surviving sister. The two men who violated her and Amy were sentenced to life in prison, but the demons of her past kept haunting Becky…until she met her fate years later at the same bridge where she’d lost her sister. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

THE DARKEST NIGHT-Ron Franscell
Over the years, Ron Franscell's books have earned high praise from bestselling authors such as Ann Rule and Vincent Bugliosi. He is the bestselling author of The Darkest Night. His writing has often been compared to Truman Capote. Ron grew up in Wyoming. A lifelong journalist, he worked for newspapers in Wyoming, New Mexico and California's Bay Area before hitting the road in one of American journalism's best beats, covering the evolution of the American West as a senior writer for the Denver Post. Shortly after 9/11, he was dispatched by the Post to cover the Middle East during the first few months of the Afghan war. In 2004, he became the managing editor for the Beaumont (TX) Enterprise, where he covered the devastation of Hurricane Rita. After Ron's divorce, he feared he was the link in a long chain of estranged fathers. But when the author and his teenage son embark on a road trip to the Yukon to seek out a macabre cocktail containing an amputated human toe, they unwittingly begin a journey into their own past, present and future. The Sourtoe CocktailClub is a true-life love story about fathers and sons, set against epic backdrops and overlooked places. It is also a road book that attempts to answer, for one father and son, a pivotal life question: Where does the road go? THE SOURTOE COCKTAIL CLUB-Ron Franscell
