Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem which we celebrate this day comes before His Passion- the great joy and triumph of this event replete with cries of hosanna and praise is going to be shortly followed by another journey of the greatest sorrow, suffering and death. What happens today is a foreshadowing of His ultimate and final entry into the heavenly Jerusalem, which occurs at His bodily Ascension into heaven. This is the significance of our procession halting at the doors of the Church and the Subdeacon banking on the door with the cross. Lift up your heads oh ye gates, that the King of Glory may come in- who is this king of glory? The Lord strong and mighty- it is through the cross that the doors are opened to the heavenly kingdom.
In this episode, I talk with Fleur and Marco about power dynamics and pedagogies within social movements generally but is focused on our experience with Extinction Rebellion. One of the themes that lie at the heart of this discussion is about whose voices are heard. Fleur's research has focused on an understanding of social movements as places of learning and has looked at the role of the urgency narrative within the movement in reproducing the dominant logic, and how the pandemic brought marginal voices closer to the centre. Marco's research has focused on the role of power within the non-hierarchical organisation, and in particular, the power of facilitators to mitigate for power and make space for those who are less dominant in space. In the systems change framework, in this episode, we look at how information flows (whose voices are heard) can influence the underlying paradigm we operate from, and some of the practices and forces that have helped to enable this.
For this week's episode I spoke to Ori Shimony (@orishim), co-founder of dOrg, a full-stack Web3 development collective. dOrg is incredibly interesting because it is run similarly to a worker-owned cooperative but functions as a DAO while also being at the forefront of building some of the most cutting-edge crypto platforms and products. During the interview we spoke about his experience in starting dOrg with cooperative principles in mind as a DAO, how DAOs should learn from radical historical movements, and how working in DAOs today gives a potential peek into how work could look like under a post-capitalism. We also talked about the process of turning dOrg into the first legally recognized DAO. If you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform. In this episode, the Spine Crackers read Nicholson Baker's 1988 short novel detailing one man's mental life during a ride up an escalator. Prefiguring some of the stylistic and thematic interests of more recent postmodern, encyclopedic novels, Baker's hyper-detailed "microhistory" is powerful and hilarious.
Genesis 14:17-24 17 The king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). 18 Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High. 19 He blessed him, and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth. 20 Blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Abram gave him a tenth of all. 21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, and take the goods for yourself.” 22 Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted up my hand to Yahweh, God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I will not take a thread nor a sandal strap nor anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.' 24 I will accept nothing from you except that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their portion.” In this special episode, the 10 minute rule of the episode limit is broken. This is fitting, since we happen to be publishing this on Resurrection Day in 2021. The Law of Moses was nailed to the Cross when Jesus died for us. We have a certain freedom! I hope you will benefit from the extra reading from Hebrews chapter 5, 6 and 7 within this episode to help an understanding of how Melchizedek fits into the story.
In this episode we talk with Emaeyak Sylvanus about his article, “Prefiguring as an Indigenous Narrative Tool in Nigerian Cinema: An Ethnomusicological Reading,” which was published in the Summer 2019 issue of the journal Ethnomusicology. A pioneering researcher on Nollywood film music, Emaeyak explores localized musical concepts that dominate Nigerian film narratives. Grounded in his understanding of a narrative technique he terms “prefiguring,” Emaeyak discusses the 2014 film “Ekaette Goes to School” as a case study for exploring how indigenous meanings are negotiated within the global cinema landscape from which the contemporary Nigerian film industry has emerged. Emaeyak Sylvanus is a senior lecturer in the Department of Music at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. A pioneering scholar on Nollywood film music, his research has appeared in journals across multiple disciplines, including music, cinema, and communication studies. His recent article, “The Relevance of Music to African Commuting Practices: The Nigerian Experience,” is available in the April 2020 issue of the journal, Contemporary Music Review.

A corrupt judge is one who looks the other way while the perpetrator gets away with it. God is not a corrupt judge. This is both good news and bad news, but it's news we have to face honestly if we're going to withstand the day of judgment which looms on the horizon.1. This Is My Father’s World2. This World Stands Under His Judgment3. For Those With Eyes to See, Every Instance of Judgment Is a Prefiguring of Ultimate Judgment4. That Final Judgment Is Incontestable and Irreversible5. In this episode, Fr. German Fliess and host Alexander Krawczyk finish discussing the various motives which should excite the faithful towards having a true devotion to their Blessed Mother. After this, the discussion turns to the Old Testament prefiguring of this devotion in the story of Rebecca and Jacob. The two explore the interpretation of this event as well as its prefiguration of the elect and the reprobate, and how we see our Blessed Mother prefigured in Rebecca. Being the Month of May - one of Our Lady’s months - it is an excellent time for you to study this devotion and honor Our Lady in an unforgettable way. Transform your spiritual life by making this Total Consecration and becoming a loving slave of Jesus and Mary. Yo-Yo Ma investigates the relationship between music and visual art. In this film, the talented cellist plays the music of Bach in a virtual prison based on the Carceri, the imaginary prisons found in the etchings of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Along the way, audiences hear from architect Moshe Safdie and others while learning of Piranesi's only built church project, the Santa Maria del Priorato. The exhibition, Piranesi, Rome, and the Arts of Design, includes a complete set of the prison etchings as well as an innovative 3-D video projection based on them. Before the film, Dr. John Marciari, Curator of European Art and Head of Provenance Research, will give a lecture about the haunting, nightmarish world of Piranesi's prisons, architectural fantasies that demonstrate the dark side of Piranesi's imagination. Prefiguring the dark imagining of the Romantic era, the Carceri are thought to have been the later model for everything from M.C. Escher's designs, to the city of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, to the moving staircases of Harry Potter's Hogwarts. www.TheSanDiegoMuseumofArt.org Video produced by Balboa Park Online Collaborative
