https://Art2Life.com - This week, I'm exploring the three primary fears that creatives often grapple with: the fear of failure, the fear of what others will think, and, intriguingly, the fear of success. I'm sharing how these fears manifested in my life as I transitioned from a commercial illustrator to a fine artist. A period of personal upheaval and the loss of all my work became a catalyst for profound transformation, leading to the birth of Art2Life and my path as a coach and fine artist. Let go of old mindsets, embrace change, and learn more about art's vital role in this alchemical process of self-discovery and success. Art is not just a product—it's a transformative journey back to your authentic self. So take small steps, play, and keep your vision alive. Whether you're creatively curious or already an experienced artist, this episode will give you some practical steps to help you move past your fears and toward the creative life you're looking for. ================================ LISTEN IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN… (0:00) Why the fear of success hinders personal growth (5:41) Making art helped me overcome depression and marked the start of my fine art career (8:03) Fear of success can secretly hold you back (13:57) Overcoming the struggle of imposter syndrome (20:18) Immerse yourself in environments that align with your passions (24:14) Address your underlying beliefs and fears from childhood (28:13) Laughing at adversity is powerful; try not to take life too seriously (29:11) Playing and creating art fosters self-realization, success, and transformation ================================ RESOURCES MENTIONED Kurt Cobain: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Cobain Catcher in the Rye by J.D. In this week's episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Cami Smith, an incredible artist and community builder who shared her inspiring creative journey. We explored the importance of connecting with our creative selves and overcoming the limiting beliefs that hold us back. Cami spoke of her passion for building community, how her mother influenced her art, her creative evolution from fiber arts to painting, and we discussed how creativity gives us a sense of control, and acts like a rudder for our lives. We also reflected on the wisdom of Jane Dunnewald, and how her message of self-love and acceptance is the foundation for a good life. We talked about the importance of being curious and that the universe does not take away gifts but uses them to propel us forward. How does your creativity make you feel more in control? Listen to the full episode for insights and ideas on how to trust your creative intuition. In our latest episode, we had the privilege of diving deep into a conversation with Cami Smith, a truly inspiring artist, community builder, and all-around creative force. Cami's journey, from fiber art and quilting to her current passion for painting, is a testament to the power of embracing change and trusting your own unique path. We discussed how our creativity helps us to feel in control of our lives, and how those feelings can guide us through difficult moments. One of the most compelling themes of our conversation was the importance of community. Cami, who says that “community is my middle name,” has spent years actively building connections within the fiber art world, and now as a painter. For Cami community provides a way for artists from around the world to connect. She is also very active in the digital gaming community, supporting programmers and other introverted creatives through community events. As Kate pointed out, the importance of community is vital, even though she herself is an introvert. We also delved into the challenge of overcoming our inner critics. Those nagging voices that tell us we're not good enough or that we're not doing things right. Cami shared how her own evolution as an artist has helped her silence that voice, as has her work in the game industry, where she encourages others to find their space. She has learned how to identify and reframe her negative thoughts, a practice that has been transformative for her, and Kate shared her process of journaling and reframing her thoughts by understanding the feelings and actions they provoke.Cami's personal journey is also deeply rooted in the influence of her artist mother. Cami shared stories about her mother's artistic practice, her unique way of seeing the world and the challenges she faced as a female artist in her time. Cami's mother inspired her to be independent and this value became an important part of Cami's life as well. We explored the idea that sometimes our life's experiences, including loss and change, can be seen like peeling an onion. Each layer that comes off reveals more of who we are and the potential for growth, and every loss is another opportunity.Drawing on the wisdom of Jane Dunnewald, we discussed the notion that creativity makes us feel more in control. Jane's powerful message of self-acceptance and self-love resonated deeply, as it is the starting point for a fulfilling and authentic life. Jane's work emphasizes curiosity, clarity, confidence and community, and these pillars act as guideposts for us as we navigate our way.Cami and Kate also explored the idea of bridging the gap between the art world and large corporations. This led to a discussion about the ways that larger institutions can incorporate human touches into their practices, and how the art community can build relationships that support these changes. Cami noted that Amazon has supported some of her community events for people in the digital games industry.Cami shared a bit about her sketchbook practices, and how she uses them to record her ideas, her random thoughts and her colours. During the pandemic she led an online course based on maps, and she is currently creating a piece that weaves memories into her art. Finally, we closed out our discussion with a reflection on one of Jane's most important messages: that the universe doesn't just give you something only to take it away. We acknowledged the truth in that, that sometimes things may feel like they are being taken away, however, in hindsight, we can see that those “losses” are really just catalysts for something new. This conversation left us feeling empowered and inspired. We hope that you will take a moment to listen, embrace your creativity and connect with your community. The universe is always giving, even when it seems like it is taking away.

https://Art2Life.com - As an artist, the thought of not knowing what comes next is bothersome. But “not knowing” is often necessary. Sometimes we have to spend time pondering what's next. We need to give ourselves space and time to sit with the discomfort of uncertainty. We have to get comfortable with the phenomenon of doing and not knowing. I'm painting right now. I'm doing one thing at a time, uncertain what I will do next. I'm simply being present with what I'm making. Danielle LaPorte loves simplicity. She is an author, philanthropist, and heart-centered leader. And the closer she gets to a heart-centered life, the more she craves it. It's become a spiritual practice. She doesn't buy mindlessly. Instead, everything in her home has a story, a reason behind buying it. Everything matters. Simplicity requires letting go. It requires loosening your attachment to things that don't matter. Are you able to take this approach in your art and your life? To be willing to make a different mark, make a mistake, and start over? Are you struggling to cast a vision for yourself, your art, or your business? Has imposter syndrome taken hold? Do you feel confident that you can make your dreams a reality? Suzi Dafnis walked into a room with 30 other business owners about to start the art class I was offering our mastermind group, admittedly incredibly nervous. Though confident in any business environment, she felt like she shrunk into her feet when she walked into my class. Yet she came out of the class having created something she's proud of and found that she enjoyed the process. Today, Suzi joins me in the studio to talk about her journey in business. She firmly believes that if you have a dream that you believe in—and get a plan in place to make it happen—you can achieve it. But just like you have to take your brush and make the first mark on a canvas, you have to take a step toward creating the business of your dreams. Join us to learn how to take that first step. This week on the Arts to Hearts Podcast, we are hosting Nicholas Wilton who is the founder of the Art2Life Creativity workshops and classes. In this episode, Nicholas talks about finding joy in his work, the limiting beliefs artists have, and the vulnerable moment in his life that pushed him toward becoming the creative visionary he is today! Nicholas has always been an artist, and as he gained experience from his own journey, he decided to help others achieve that as well. He started with small destination workshops and taught online. With the assistance of his team, he helps people find who they are as artists. In the meantime, Nicholas has not forgotten his passion and continues to make art in his own studio. Something Nicholas has learned over the years is that artists have little faith in themselves, and that is something that can really hinder their growth. Nicholas thinks that artists today are limited by the belief that some artists are more gifted than others. He argues that each individual has their own set of skills and is as capable as anyone else. Realizing this is the first small step you can take to build that self-confidence in yourself. Another mistake that artists often make is that they compare themselves to others and worry whether they will be able to sell art. Comparison is the thief of joy, and Nicholas thinks that it can truly shatter your self-esteem. Instead of looking at other people's art, it's important that you focus on your work and be authentic, and only then you can begin to take control of your narrative! In this podcast, Nicholas shares many more insightful tips on how you can connect with your inner artist and do what you love, so tune in and listen to the entire episode! Arts to Hearts Project is thrilled to announce the launch of our new call for art for a virtual exhibition, accompanied by the creation of an exquisite artist's book. The virtual exhibition promises to be a captivating showcase of visual experiences, while the artist's book will serve as a timeless collection of these vibrant creations. Making art that sells - a term some people love and for some it brings feelings of guilt, shame and a sense of selling your soul. This week, I explore this topic as it relates to making art with the intention of selling. For me two primary considerations contribute towards sales: Making art (or anything) that is like you - by this I mean leaning into what makes you unique. Your art reflects you, and the more you understand this, the more you can communicate this. This applies to what you make, identifying what makes your work different to everyone else, and also leaning into your story - as there is a story behind every artist and every artwork. Learning what people want - this means either getting to know your audience, if you have one and learning what sells. A particular frame?? A certain animal?? Or if you don't have an audience, it's about looking at a particular area of art you are interested in and looking around to see what works. Taking note of scale, frames, patterns, colours and so on. This what I talk about in today's episode. If you haven't signed up to the next FREE art workshop called The Art Of Your Life, click here to register: This workshop is run by Nicholas Wilton and it starts on 4th March. It's delivered over 3 days and replays are available. It is an entire week of teaching from Nicholas, designed to help you make art that is stronger and more like you. A lesson in how to make art that stands out from the crowd.
I remember looking at my painting and wondering what was wrong with my creation. It didn't seem right, but I couldn't determine why. It was like when I had found an inspirational image and tried to replicate what I saw but failed miserably. I've taken courses in drawing, acrylic, life drawing, watercolour, textiles, collage, ceramics - the list goes on. The one thing I have learned over time is that art is a language. It doesn't matter how many courses you take; if you don't learn the fundamental elements that contribute to what art is, you will always struggle. I've learned this is a surprisingly common challenge… So common, in fact, that my friend Nicholas Wilton has decided to address it in his upcoming FREE workshop. Click here to save your seat in the free Art of Your Life Workshop! Specifically, he will be covering the first 3 (and most important) stages in the Art2Life Process, including DESIGN: Why so many people with lots of education, degrees and experience still struggle to make art they love How to master composition in a way that will quickly elevate your art VALUE: How to strengthen your discernment — that internal compass — that tells you when to go further, pivot, or pull back with your art How to create a beautiful kind of depth and balance in your art COLOUR: How to add a vibrant new level of dimension AND subtleness to your work with a perspective on color you haven't heard before! How to feel more confident in your creative choices — so you can begin making art MORE like YOU.

https://Art2Life.com - There's nothing like some time away from your art practice to build excitement for the creative road ahead. I recently took a backpacking trip with my daughters through the Maroon Bells, which is situated in the Elk Mountains of Colorado. Aside from an incredible time of connection with my family, it was also a great time to reflect on art, creativity, and the struggles we collectively share as artists. From my own personal challenges to the voice submissions we get on the website, I'm using this episode to share some timely thoughts about navigating the creative journey. Join me as I riff on humility, community, and healthy mindsets that positively impact your art and life. ================================ LISTEN IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN… The beauty of talent, creativity, and humility [3:20] Using community for self and artistic reflection [12:28] Thinking about art versus making art [18:53] Focusing on the experience instead of outcomes [23:23] Why progress gives perspective [33:26] Going at YOUR pace [39:36] Making art with your mind, body, and soul [41:32] Finding ourselves and our art through play [47:22] ================================ CONNECT WITH NICHOLAS WILTON AND ART2LIFE: Get the Free COLOR TIPS PDF: https://workshop.art2life.com/color-tips-pdf-podcasts/ Follow the Sunday Art2Life Vlog: https://art2life.lpages.co/sign-up-for-the-a2l-vlog/ Follow Nicholas Wilton's Art on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicholaswilton/ Follow Art2Life on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/art2life_world/?hl=en Subscribe on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Art2Life
Contrasts are interesting by virtue of what they are. They make art intriguing and exciting both to the artist and those who enjoy their work. Carl Heyward is a contemporary artist whose work is a powerful example of how the juxtaposition of ideas, colors, and even mediums can create a moving and powerful experience. His work centers around ideas of fragmentation, disparity, and collaboration, and the surprising part is that his art flows out of his process. He says that “In my case, the whole enterprise is questioned upon each studio session as an existential tightrope walk above an abyss.” It's this process, an instinct you might call it, that enables him to produce harmonious but contrasting themes that are highly expressive. At the time of this recording Carl was quite mindful of the stage of life he's in. He sees himself being in his last phase of life and is therefore asking “What do I want to leave?” As we explore his approach to art, his creation of the Global Art Project, and his reflections on his current work, you'll see how Carl himself is a focal point of contrasts, community, and collaboration. Listen if you are interested in... Getting to know Carl Heyward and his work [1:45] Mindsets that guide Carl's instruction and workshops [18:12] The influence and collaboration Carl enjoys with his wife, Akiko [25:35] Background and history on the Global Art Project [32:18] Current projects Carl is working on and the what has captured his attention lately [44:51] Shared aspects of human existence saturate Carl's approach to his work and teaching In a cultural milieu where the differences between people seem to be given far too much air time, Carl's perspective on life and art is refreshing. He says, “Give me a lot of differences and I'll find a commonality… give me anything and I can find a relationship between them. I can juxtapose or connect how objects relate to each other.” This is not only true of Carl when it comes to his art, but also when it comes to relationships between people. In his role as a teacher, Carl recognizes that because of the differences between people, there are different ways to guide his students into clarity. What he says to prompt their thinking in a particular direction may be intended one way but interpreted entirely differently. He's learned to be OK with that, to actually allow that different interpretation to guide the process for that student. Their individuality and perspective often surprise him and lead to good outcomes. For this reason, no workshop is ever the same. This variety, which comes from the unique perspective of each individual, enables Carl to be more excited with what he's doing. Repetition, trust, and integrity as a teacher and artist As Carl works with students, he finds himself saying the same important things over and over. While the following are not quite “matras,” they are foundational aspects of art making that he thinks serve as important guides to his instruction. The first of these has to do with repetition. Carl recognizes from his own experience that repetition of anything has the potential to become restrictive, creating artificial boundaries or “prison bars” around the creator and their work. But there is a kind of repetition that is helpful, repetition that forms into a healthy habit that advances an artist's work and skill. Carl believes that as an instructor, the need to clearly distinguish between those two things falls on his shoulders. He must help his students understand the difference and adopt the habits that will serve their craft rather than enslave it. A second oft-repeated phrase Carl finds himself saying is, “Trust yourself.” All artists, but particularly those who are just starting out are often overly critical of their work. Carl says that these new students aren't yet able to understand that the development of truly good art and the frameworks and skills that produce it is a process that grows over time. He tries to kindly but clearly point out the self-deprecating commentary made by students and explain why it isn't helpful. And when it comes to both repetition and trust, it's important to Carl that he not only teaches these things to his students, but that he is practicing them himself as he continues to create. He doesn't want to be one who preaches things that he doesn't practice himself. This history and purpose of the Global Art Project The Global Art Project grew out of another project that Carl initiated years ago. That initial project was called the “Knee Jerk Fragmentation Project.” That project involved 500 artists and 3000 pieces of art were produced. It was a one for one 5 x 7 postcard exchange between artists. Each artist would receive a piece from another artist, then add to it with their own creative work. This led to the Global Art Project using a curated frag collection provided by members of the project. Behind this iteration project is the conscious awareness that artists often have leftover fragments of their work, things they don't want to use or that they consider a failure. Carl realized that these “frags” could be a valuable art piece for someone else, spurring their interest or stirring up their creativity. The GAP is running on its own now, including 80 members and spanning 17 countries. It's been a wonderful journey that addresses the high and low of what art can be. It intentionally provides collaborative aspects to artmaking and includes what Carl refers to as “the gallery museum elements, the intellectual elements, the fun elements, and the surprise elements of what art can be.” Listen to hear more about the GAP and how you can get involved. https://Art2Life.com - A big theme that comes up frequently for the artists I work with is the idea of believing in yourself. Specifically, believing in yourself when others don't. However, we can't let someone else's negative take keep us from the life we're supposed to live and the art we're supposed to make.
