Your Brain On Climate
The neutrality myth, with Lydia Messling

Your Brain On Climate

Is climate science 'neutral'? Should it be? Are humans even capable of being neutral about anything? In this new-format episode, I dig into accusations that climate scientists risk undermining their work by going on climate marches. Can that really be true? Doesn't the scientific method speak for itself? And is it realistic to expect people to spend all day immersed in awful data, and NOT want to change the world afterwards? I'm joined this episode by the fab Dr Lydia Messling, climate engagement expert and a very thoughtful and clever person. Lydia talks about her experiences in being told not to go on climate marches, and what she's learned about how climate scientists can be great public communicators.  And Lydia helps me understand the big big difference between being 'neutral' and being 'objective': while the former's probably impossible in science or life, the latter is the very heart of what makes science fab in the first place. This is a new type of episode that I hope will be the norm from now on. But it takes a lot longer to do. So if you want to see more like this, let me know - hello@yourbrainonclimate.com and please do leave a review. And do please consider chucking a few quid at www.patreon.com/yourbrainonclimate. Owl noises: 08:12 - Lydia et al's Nature piece challenging the 'neutrality myth'... 08:22 - which was a response to this Nature piece from Ulf Büntgen. 12:25 - More on the BBC's change of tack on 'balance' in climate reporting, from the Guardian. 13:20 - The thoroughly unedifying Climategate affair, 10 years on. 15:46 - the audio here is from a great interview with Prof Brian Cox from Champion Speakers on Youtube. 17:37 - Helen Douglas's 2009 book.28:45 - Lydia's 8 tips for climate science communication. Your Brain on Climate is a podcast about human psychology vs the climate crisis. New Zealand’s health service was not ready to introduce the bowel cancer screening programme when it began and issues at the Southern District Health Board’s colonoscopy service reflected that, an editorial in today’s Medical Journal says.Written by University of Otago cancer researcher Prof Brian Cox and Canterbury doctor Phil Bagshaw — co-author of a highly critical report on SDHB colonoscopy services — the editorial said a screening programme was essential and should have been introduced sooner. However, adequate resourcing for the programme had never been provided by the Ministry of Health and it had been left to individual DHBs to find them, the doctors said."Predicted conflicts have occurred in some regions between access to colonoscopy for symptomatic cases versus access for screening purposes, as happened for example at the Southern DHB."Underlying causes for this conflict might include failure of the DHB readiness assessment, adjudged by the Ministry of Health, to adequately predict the requirements of the complex additional burden of screening, insufficient funding for screening to prevent interference with other clinical care, or failure of the Ministry of Health to implement the guidelines of the Health Quality and Safety Commission."The SDHB introduced bowel screening in 2018.Figures released in June said 177 cases of cancer had been detected so far, and 1267 people had had polyps removed. In October, the SDHB apologised for "lapses and inadequacies" in its colonoscopy services over several years and announced it had set up an oversight group to ensure appropriate governance of the service.Dr Bagshaw told the Otago Daily Times the SDHB’s colonoscopy service was the one which had been most studied and about which there was the most data, but he was sure other DHBs had similar issues."The issue for me is how did the Ministry agree for screening to be introduced when the national statistics showed that the Southern DHB was almost at the bottom of the list for all of them . . . all of the stats showed that the Southern DHB was not managing symptomatic bowel cancer."Dr Bagshaw, who was a member of the 1998 committee which called for the introduction of bowel screening but said resourcing was inadequate, said nationwide the shortage of equipment and trained staff, especially for follow-ups, remained an issue."If resources are absolutely sparse, the first ethical responsibility is to treat patients with symptoms . . . given the statistics, how did the Southern DHB conclude they were ready to start screening?"Given how stretched services were across New Zealand it was "very likely" other services would have similar issues as the SDHB, Dr Bagshaw said."There should have been a more realistic assessment of who could and who could not provide screening."By Mike Houlahan

Hello from a glorious Cheshire Plain. In this bumper episode I discuss dying, squawk about space and am rendered speechless... Thanks for the feedback on Episode 41: A Postcard from Manchester. It's been a privilege to share the memories the music invokes for you. A couple of people are close but no one has yet identified all of the clips, so I'll leave it open until March 31st. PM or email me with your answers. Works in Progress: Slooooooow work on the Damson Shawl as part of the Caithness Craft Collective Knitalong, but the end is in sight. I hope to have it finished for next episode. Ravelry details are here. I've also been dying yarn (Clotted Cream from Sheepfold) and fibre (BFL from DT Craft & Design) to make something for the Guild Exhibition. I need to hand it in next Saturday, so I'd better be quick! I've also dyed 100g of BFL in a purple to ply with the Cheviot from Shunklies. No more progress has been made in the actual spinning, though. Woolsack Update: I've finished my fifth cushion for Woolsack. The pattern is Tilting at Windmills by Woolly Thoughts. It needs a bath in Soak though, to soften up the Jamieson's of Shetland Aran yarn (now discontinued I think). It's not scratchy so much as just a bit stiff. Here's the front... ...and the back... Review: Knitty Issue 39, Spring + Summer 2012. Something I Really Like: Astronomy, my telescope that I still can't use and my SkyView app. Here's the photo I took when I stopped recording. It's slightly blurry because I was too excited to get the tripod out and do it properly, I'm afraid. Venus is the brighter light on the right, with Jupiter on the left. It really did appear just as I was saying it. Uncanny! Links: Woolsack; A Playful Day; Subway Knits; Counting Sheep; The Heathen Housewife; Prof Brian Cox.
