Avenue Red turned up to Affinity at Eastern Bloc Records in Manchester's Northern Quarter back on the 17th July 2024... what a night! Event founder Max Howard AKA Maxxitrax had just kicked off a delightfully enchanting warm-up set and our ever-trusty recorder was plugged into the mixer, soundchecked and activated as quickly as possible... sadly the first few very dazzling and trippy records were missed from the recording, but what was captured 'till the end of his set was just beautiful. Max is clearly a selector's selector with top drawer technical skills. Proper solid intro vibes for a vibrant, hot summers evening session on Stevenson Square, which also later featured Tribe, Damo B and DJ Mindbender. And finally... here it is! "This is a recording of my opening set from my last Affinity party held at Eastern Bloc. I wanted to use the opportunity to play records that I wouldn't get to play in a peak time or closing slot that I will usually play in. I had picked some records out that fit this narrative but turned up without a game plan. Luckily I managed to work things out so that I could play some soul tracks to start out with and then build tension up gradually. I really enjoyed the process, hopefully the listeners will enjoy it too. Tracks from the likes of Sade, Pure Silk, Manual, The Stone Roses, Rennie Foster, Autechre - and labels such as Subject Detroit, Novamute, Peacefrog, Tresor..." In this binaural recording, we can hear a group of young men playing a game of football on a small courtyard. The players run from one end of the field to the other, chasing the ball and trying to score. We can hear the ball being passed around and some attempts of shooting the ball, resulting in a loud, metallic 'bang' against the metal caging of the field. You can also hear men shouting in different languages like French, Marokan, English and other languages. The football court is located in the Northern Quarter of Brussels, in the Park Maximilian. This park is known as a hub for (trans)migrants that have arrived in Brussels and are looking for asylum or a passage to the UK. Often in precarious conditions, they collectively stay in the park, mostly because of its proximity to the Federal Bureau of Immigration Affairs. Aid workers and social organisations have also set up some infrastructure for food and shelter in and around the park. The presence of the immigrants in Park Maximilian has been covered a lot in Belgian Media and has often been portrayed as a symbol of the 'migration crisis' that started since 2015. The Maximilian Park is also a place of leisure and recreation for the inhabitants of the large apartment blocks surrounding the park. The residents of these housing units use the park for sporting activities and as a playing ground for their kids. The large presence of immigrants in the park is controversial among the locals and has resulted in some concerns about safety. They blame the Belgian government for not adequately dealing with this issue and finding structural solutions. In the recording, the football game is a match between local youths, that hang around in the park, and a group of transmigrants from Eritrea. For me personally, this recording captures a moment where these two groups find each other and use the game of football to vent their frustrations. You can also hear this in the recording, where the game sometimes slightly tilts towards to conflict. It represents the ways in which local urban communities set up informal structures to deal with the perceived issues that come with migration. Recorded by Gillis Van Der Wee. Actor Rupert Hill was a very high functioning and pleasant drinker who could hide his alcoholism behind a successful career as an actor and publican which also helped fuel the denial. Over decades, Rupert's drinking became more and more unstainable - he found himself wanting a drink before going on stage and even in the middle of the night. Rupert decided to announce that he was sober on social media and has had the word "FREE" tatooed on the wrist of his drinking hand as a reminder to never go back. Rupert explains his slow decline into alcoholism and how and why he got sober - finding solace outside 12 step fellowship, self-help & gaining knowledge. Huge thanks Rupert for being so candid to help others! More on Rupert - Studied drama and theatre at Middlesex. Acting credits include TV shows like Holby City, Casualty and Coronation Street (Jamie Baldwin). Recent work includes Hollyoaks, Four Lives and Whitstable Pearl. He appeared in over 15 stage productions including Lady Chatterley's Lover and Wuthering Heights & directed the national tour of The Full Monty. Film credits include Awaiting and Entity & features in 25+ radio plays. Rupert writes & directs his own films including; Molehills, Roll With The Punches and The Lookalike & recently wrote, co-directed, and starred in Operation Magpie, winning 'Best Actor' at Manchester Lift Off Festival. Debut play HUSK will stage at Hope Mill Theatre, Manchester, in September, focusing on alcohol addiction and he directs The Arden Drama School showreels and showcase. In 2016, Caroline Dyer and Colette Burroughs-Rose shared frustrations with how the world was becoming more divided. They believed the political developments of the time — the election of Donald Trump and Brexit — had caused more friction in the world and there was a need for more nuanced conversations to help us reconnect. In the aftermath of this division, Heard Storytelling was born. It began with a series of live events in a pub in the Northern Quarter, where people were invited to share their personal stories in front of a live audience. Just last month, they launched their first podcast series, the Heard Storytelling podcast. They publish twice a week, with one long form episode on Monday which features a story and an interview with the storyteller, and on Fridays, they publish Briefly Heard, which offers behind-the-scenes insights into how a story was crafted. In this special episode, Mollie sits down with Heard Storytelling's co-founder Caroline Dyer to discuss the inspirational Manchester stories that they discovered while making the podcast, the importance of being vulnerable with strangers and why storytelling matters. It's our final guest of season five. Angela Roche is a graphic designer and creative director who runs Manchester studio, Love & Logic. We've been trying to get Angela on the show for quite some time. Disclaimer alert: we're great friends and once shared an office when she was running Design By Day – a brand and digital agency that had tremendous success, working for clients such as the NHS, Barnardo's, and Brother. We fondly remember leaning out of the window of our Northern Quarter base, watching the world go by as we helped each other figure out all the challenges of running a business. Or when we had swivel chair races across the floor. Or create fun videos for her agency's Instagram feed. Or when we dressed one of our team as a 'hipster', complete with a fixie bike, turned-up jeans and a little hat. They were great times and great people: Sami, Jonathan, Rob (whom we've also had on the podcast), Parham and many more that followed. Angela looked after them all, offering a great place to work and grow. But after 12 years – 16 months spent during the pandemic – Angela found herself at a difficult crossroads. After much soul-searching, which we can imagine wasn't easy for someone we know who cares hugely about other people, Angela decided running an agency wasn't for her anymore. And so, she closed Design By Day and launched her solo venture, Love & Logic. In this episode, we'll talk about building a design agency and its many challenges, and we'll hear of Angela's experience of closing it down, despite its success. We'll cover themes of the fear of failure, confronting gut feelings, and opting for difficult choices when you know they involve more than just you.

Graham gives an update on Manchester's Northern Quarter venue, Night & Day, fighting for its right to present live music after complaints about its club night noise levels. Finally, Graham reports on his visit to the Deer Shed festival's Christmas Party at Brudenell Social Club in Leeds.

"Manchester had always been glinting on the horizon across the Lancashire plain" On National Storytelling week, host Lisa Morton brings you some of the best stories about Manchester places, from the We Built This City archives. You'll hear about iconic Manchester buildings, like Granada studios, Manchester's pubs, like the Dog and Partridge in Didsbury and about the redevelopment of the Northern Quarter. Featuring contributions from Lemn Sissay, Chris Oglesby, Eamonn O'Neal, Sharon Latham, Siobhan Johnston, Liam Manton, Tom Bloxham and Vikas Shah. ------ Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. From that point, the business, and its team members, have been involved in helping to support the creation of Modern Manchester – across regeneration, business, charity, leisure and hospitality, sport and culture. To celebrate the 25 years that Roland Dransfield has spent creating these bonds, Lisa is gathering together some of her Greater Mancunian ‘family' and will be exploring how they have created their own purposeful relationships with the best place in the world. This week on What Goes Around we talk to the big cat himself DJ Jaguar Skills. A legend of the UK Hip-Hop scene DJ Jaguar Skills tells his musical story from the bedroom to the biggest festivals, radio shows and record labels. A man of incredible ingenuity and insight Jaguar Skills photocopied his way into journalism, pivoted into DJing by way of a minidisc player and finally became a fully fledged recording artist & label boss on his own terms. Best known for his incredible mixes for the likes of Trevor Nelson, Mista Jam, Colin Murry and his unique remixes for Nervous Records, Lupe Fiasco and many more. You could never say that he took the well worn path and that makes his story unmissable. We also have a special feature on the Manchester Hip-Hop archive, a brilliant project aiming to document the crucial role Manchester played in the adoption of Hip-Hop in the UK. We talk to the curators about the scene, the key players and how the fashion, graffiti, music and dancing came together to lift up the youth of the Northern Quarter and kick start an age of creativity and optimism. Before all that though Eamon and Deb discuss three incredible documentaries that lay bare the creative process and the pressures of success; The Beatles 8 hour epic 'Get Back', Leonard Cohen's long lost 'Bird on a wire' and the tragic but beautiful story of the Silver Jews. It's very easy to concentrate on the national news cycle. Big flashy stories and scandals that drip from the teleprompters of Sky and the BBC. But underneath cocaine habits and duck islands, local government ticks over with a slither of the amount of coverage. With the perception it's just about bin collection and bus time tables, councils and local government have substantial power still on how we support our ecosystem and where money is invested. This week we are joined on the Pod by investigative journalist Andrea Sandor (@wordstoseeby). Andreas coverage includes the stripping of cycling provision across the city, the gentrification of the Northern Quarter and Manchesters pollution crisis. We discuss why local journalism is more important than ever, how philosphy is keeping people from cycling and how the Manchester Meteor is building a truly independent media.Shout outsNick hubble cycling activist. https://nickhubble.bike/Build back better campaign@BuildBckBetterhttps://www.buildbackbetteruk.org/IPPR study on the furlough schemehttps://www.ippr.org/files/2020-05/1589291707_who-wins-and-who-pays-may20.pdfDeansgate pedestrianisation https://aboutmanchester.co.uk/deansgate-set-for-partial-pedestrianisation-from-this-weekend/If you like the show tell your comrades!Find us on all the socialsTwitter:@MCRGND_PODInsta: ManchestergndpodFB:MCRGNDPOD

You're in for a treat this week, as we learn how to build a £100 million property development company. And we learn from the best in the business - Tom Bloxham MBE, chairman and co-founder of multi-award-winning property development company, Urban Splash. But first, we have our news story of the week which you can find by clicking here. You may remember our landlord survey a while back - the results were interesting and we're pleased that the findings have hit the property press hard and fast. How will landlords react to Brexit? Will it scupper future property investment plans or will it create a wave of opportunities for investors to capitalise on? Hit the link and let us know what you think of the research. Now, our main event this week is the story of Urban Splash - a business that's doing phenomenal things in the property industry. At 25 years old, Urban Splash has continued making a splash across towns and cities throughout the UK with their large regeneration and design-led schemes, which have won them a huge amount of awards - and rightly so! A true champion in the property development industry, Tom talks us through the difficulties of taking old, derelict and listed buildings, and restoring them to create functional homes to suit today's modern needs. And more interestingly, their recent move in to modular housing which is set to transform the housing industry significantly over the years. How did Urban Splash grow from two men in a shed to building a multi-million-pound business? Tune in as Tom walks us through his first, very ambitious project in Liverpool where the true power of design and placemaking was revealed. If you're unfamiliar with Urban Splash, they are the true pioneers of urban living and have made the challenges of regeneration appear effortless. However, Tom and the team have had many years to perfect this. And while each project has elements which they'd have done differently, they follow our very own mantra of ‘constant improvement' to make sure lessons are learned and that the next site is better than the last. If you're an aspiring property developer, this property podcast is a must listen for you as Tom also takes us on a journey through site acquisition, competitive bidding and the design process where architects and consultants are pushed to get the most out of each and every site. Once you have a product - what's next? There's no secret that Urban Splash are incredible marketers - they've won a host of awards for that too. So what's their secret? How have they created such a huge demand for their properties? How did they go from being a multi-million-pound business to being worthless almost overnight? How did Manchester's Northern Quarter get its name? And what tips would Tom recommend to those who want to follow in his property footsteps? Tune into this week's incredible property podcast to find out. Hub Extra: We're squeezing more value into this week's property podcast, with another handy resource discovered by Rob & Rob. HOW THE DEVIL ARE YOU?... ahh, it feels good to be back and OFFICALLY start the new term doesnt it? This week we hopped in the car and went up the road to Manchester, sat down and set up in the lovely Ziferblat on Edge Street in the Northern Quarter and were joined by the infectiously lovely actor and comedian Siân Gibson! We spent a magical hour or so drinking brews and discussing uncomfortable auditions, castings, family life, fallow periods and Wales. You'll know Siân from loads of telly programs, most notably playing Kayleigh Kitson in the BBC sitcom Car Share which she co-wrote with Peter Kay. Siân's outlook on life is completely inspiring and she shares the ups and downs of her acting life with wonderful charm. We loved it and we hope you love listening too. We've got a bunch more excellent TSP eps in the can now and we can't wait to share them with you. TSP thursdays are back in effect!!! Get in touch... This week I chat to Mel Hudson, manager of Pop Boutique in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Mel showed me around the Oldham Street store, an immense variety of vintage clothing from the 60', 70's and 80's. Mel has worked there for many years and knows every inch of the shop and the vast array of clothing and furniture throughout the store. The Pop Boutique shop first opened in 1994 in the heart of the Northern Quarter. The ground floor is packed with vintage, pop recycled and pop boutique own brand goodies. The basement is huge and full of quirky vintage clothing, furniture and everything a vintage junkie needs to get their fix. Within the building they also have Barbarella for a hair do and the blue daisy café for eats (all made in the basement kitchen) and awesome coffee. So it's retro and vintage all under one roof! Go check it out! Website: www.pop-boutique.com Facebook: Pop Boutique Instagram: Pop Boutique Manchester Instragram for Mel: womanimel
