They've rarely had a club get as far as the championship series, and the National League Central hasn't won a game in the best-of-seven NLCS since 2018. Oh, and coming out of the pandemic the small-market teams that dot the NL and American League Central divisions have been rocked by revenue turbulence. All while the games star free agents gather at the coasts. With that as the background, Cincinnati Enquirer baseball writer Gordon Wittenmyer suggested to Post-Dispatch baseball writer and BPIB host Derrick Goold that they poll as many executives as possible at the General Manager Meetings to ask: Which team in the NL Central is most likely to be the next team to win a World Series? The answers were revealing -- not just for the task, but also for what executives view as the most likely traits a team needs to win. The "most resources," came up often as the big-city Cubs received the most votes. Here is the Post-Dispatch story that came from the poll. And here is the podcast that expands upon the poll to discuss the factors that got the divisions here, how one or more can escape the bind, and whether Major League Baseball is just going to keep soaring above fly-over country until the economic structure of the game changes. In even the most destructive wildfires, some structures survive untouched while everything around them is incinerated. It begs the question: What factors are most responsible for determining if a home is destroyed or survives during these events? A team of researchers spent years trying to answer that important question. They gathered massive troves of data from California's most destructive wildfires, then used artificial intelligence machine learning to analyze what factors make the biggest difference in home survivability.  On today's podcast, we talk to wildfire researcher and study co-author Michael Gollner about what the team found out, how they did it, and how this valuable information will be used. Ep 551 - Tilting at Windmills Guest: Dan Woynillowicz By Stuart McNish “Tilting at windmills” is an idiom which means “attacking imaginary enemies.” Windmills are, however, real and they have real detractors and attackers – detractors who portray wind turbines as being an environmental blight that produces little power.  There was a modicum of truth to the knock on windmills in the 1980s when thousands of them appeared in the San Gorgonio Pass in California. By 1987, there were more than 4,200 wind turbines in the Pass leading into Palm Springs that generated between 50 to 100 kilowatts of power. Today, the total number of wind turbines in the San Gorgonio Pass is 666, generating 628 MW or enough to power close to 800,000 homes. Advances in design, construction, power generation and operation have seen the overall growth of wind generated power improve. The nine new wind farms in British Columbia will be home to 292 next-generation windmills that will produce enough energy to power approximately 500,000 homes, a substantial increase in power generation over California's wind turbines. Dr. Joel Sneed is a professor, a practicing clinical psychologist and a highly-regarded chess author. And despite a busy professional and family life, Joel has achieved the rare feat of reaching a  2000+ USCF after starting tournament chess in his 30s. But, like many of us, Joel struggles to moderate his relationship with chess. He has long held a goal of reaching USCF Master, and puts a lot of pressure on himself to make it happen quickly.
