Jeremy Bagshaw had accomplished a lot in his 20+ year career in swimming. NCAA Champion at Cal Berkeley. Commonwealth and Pan American Games medalist. Multiple-time world championships qualifier. But one thing that had eluded him (4 times, going back to 2008) was qualifying for Canada's Olympic team. Last month at the Canadian Trials, in what would have been his final race as a competitive swimmer, Bagshaw finished 4th in the 200 free, securing his spot on the Olympic team for the first time. Bagshaw had also just completed medical school in Ireland. Listen to what the 32-year-old has to say about perseverance and challenging himself to strive for more in and out of the pool. Bagshaw turned his lifestyle of medical school and competitive swimming into a game for himself, always wanting to win the day whether in class or at training. In the end, it worked out well for Dr. Bagshaw, who will be competing in Paris next month.

This Day in Legal History: Constitutional Convention AssemblesOn May 14, 1787, a pivotal moment unfolded in American history as delegates from each state began to gather in Philadelphia for what would be known as the Constitutional Convention. This assembly was critical in shaping the nation's future, aimed at addressing the deficiencies of the Articles of Confederation—the loose framework that initially bound the states together after independence. As the delegates arrived, the stakes were incredibly high. The existing government structure under the Articles was proving inadequate in managing various critical issues, such as interstate disputes and financial instability. The Philadelphia meeting was convened to create a more robust federal government while ensuring that individual liberties were not infringed upon.Notably, every state except Rhode Island sent representatives to the Convention. Among the attendees were some of the most distinguished figures of the era, including George Washington, who was unanimously elected as the president of the convention, and James Madison, now considered the "Father of the Constitution" due to his pivotal role in drafting the document. The convention sessions were held in strict secrecy, a decision made to foster open debate and prevent external influences. The result of the intense deliberations, which continued until September 17, was the creation of a new Constitution. This document established a stronger federal government with separate executive, legislative, and judicial branches, fundamentally changing the direction of the United States. The ratification process that followed was another intense debate, reflective of the diverse viewpoints within the states about the balance of power between state and federal authorities. The Federalist Papers, written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, played a crucial role in persuading the public and state legislatures to adopt the new Constitution.Today, the Constitution remains a living document, central to American law and governance, illustrating the enduring legacy of the decisions made during those historic months in Philadelphia. The events of May 14, 1787, mark not just the beginning of the Constitutional Convention but also the starting point of a constitutional democracy that would influence governance structures worldwide.Perkins Coie, a Seattle-founded law firm, is expanding its global footprint by launching a new office in London. The London office will be led by Ian Bagshaw, former co-head of White & Case's global private equity practice, who joined Perkins Coie after leaving Big Law to chair a startup. Joining him are three other former White & Case lawyers, including Jan Andrusko, who will serve as the European head of M&A for Perkins Coie. The London office aims to tap into the local and European markets for venture capital, private equity, and startups, leveraging the firm's established tech-sector expertise in the U.S. Perkins Coie plans to offer a comprehensive range of services through this single European hub, focusing on privacy, technology transactions, and M&A, without pursuing a network of offices across Europe. This strategic move marks Perkins Coie's first establishment outside of the U.S. and Asia. In 2021, the firm ranked 43rd largest in the U.S. by revenue, with earnings of $1.2 billion. The London office will initially feature a corporate group but may expand to include intellectual property and litigation services to provide a more rounded offering to tech-focused corporate clients.Ian Bagshaw, along with partners Jan Stejskal, Craig Fagan, and Barry O'Driscoll, and senior counsel Jan Jakoubek, are part of the founding team. They bring significant experience in private equity, cross-border M&A, and corporate law, aiming to recreate the startup culture prevalent in the U.S. within the European context. Bagshaw highlighted the startup-like environment of the new office and his motivation to build a new business with a clear strategic direction as key factors in his move to Perkins Coie. The focus on privacy and technology transactions in the new office is significant. These areas are crucial in the tech sector, involving the handling of sensitive data and the execution of tech-related deals, which are key growth areas in European legal markets. This strategic choice underlines Perkins Coie's intent to leverage their U.S. strengths in a new market, reflecting broader trends in global law practice where specialization aligns with industry needs.Perkins Coie Launches London Office, Eyeing Start-Up Tech MarketJury selection for U.S. Senator Robert Menendez's corruption trial resumed on May 14, 2024, in Manhattan federal court, with charges stemming from an alleged bribery scheme involving foreign governments. Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, has denied wrongdoing, pleading not guilty to 16 charges, including bribery, fraud, acting as a foreign agent, and obstruction. The trial also involves two New Jersey businessmen, Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, and Menendez's wife, Nadine, who will be tried separately due to medical reasons. The accusations detail that Senator Menendez accepted substantial bribes, including cash, gold bars, and a luxury car, in return for political favors to the governments of Egypt and Qatar. The FBI discovered much of the cash hidden at the Menendezes' home. Menendez allegedly facilitated arms deals for Egypt and attempted to secure a monopoly for Hana on halal meat certifications to Egypt. He is also charged with attempting to influence a Qatari investment fund on behalf of Daibes and interfering in a criminal case against him.Despite the severity of these charges, Menendez has not resigned but has stepped down from his role as the leader of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. His previous legal troubles in 2017, involving a wealthy Florida ophthalmologist, ended in a mistrial. As the current trial unfolds, Menendez faces significant public disapproval in New Jersey, complicating any potential reelection efforts. His wife's trial is scheduled for July 8, where health concerns will play a central role, and Menendez might shift blame to her as part of his defense strategy.Jury selection to resume in US Senator Menendez's corruption trial | ReutersThe Delaware Supreme Court is set to hear an appeal concerning a substantial attorney fee award in a lawsuit involving Dell Technologies Inc. and a $1 billion stockholder settlement over a stock conversion, which was allegedly coerced by Michael Dell and Silver Lake LLC in 2018. This case, which is notable for its rare nine-figure fee award, reflects a broader discussion in Delaware about how much plaintiffs' attorneys should be compensated in significant legal settlements. In this particular case, attorneys who facilitated the historic settlement were awarded $267 million, which represents the second-highest fee ever awarded in the state's Chancery Court history. This award is currently being challenged by Pentwater Capital Management LP, which argues that the 27% fee is excessively generous and constitutes a windfall. The appeal comes at a time when Delaware's courts are also considering other large fee requests, including two involving Tesla Inc., where one case seeks a $230 million fee for a settlement concerning board compensation, and another involves an investor challenging CEO Elon Musk's pay package. The Delaware courts have historically used a multi-factor test to determine the fairness of legal fees, which considers the complexity of the case, the attorneys' skill and experience, and the risk of contingency. The debate over these fees has even drawn input from law professors, with some advocating for a declining-percentage method used in federal courts, which reduces the percentage fee as the settlement amount increases. This ongoing legal debate highlights the evolving challenges and considerations in determining reasonable compensation for legal services in major corporate litigation, especially in a state known for its significant corporate law cases.Dell Fee Request at Delaware High Court Could Impact Tesla SuitsThe legal battle involving 21 young plaintiffs in a significant U.S. climate lawsuit has reached a precarious point following a recent decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The court granted a February request from the Justice Department to dismiss the case, known as Juliana v. US, directing Judge Ann Aiken of the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon to terminate it. This lawsuit, aiming for government accountability on climate action, has seen setbacks before, including a 2020 dismissal where the plaintiffs' demands for more aggressive government intervention against global warming were deemed beyond judicial capability to grant. The plaintiffs, represented by Our Children's Trust, are now considering limited options, such as requesting a full panel rehearing at the Ninth Circuit or potentially escalating the matter to the U.S. Supreme Court. However, legal experts, including Michael Gerrard of Columbia University's Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, caution against the latter due to the Supreme Court's current composition, which may not be favorable towards climate-related cases. The recent ruling underscores judicial hesitancy to engage in what is seen as policy-making—a realm typically reserved for the legislative branch. Despite this, the plaintiffs' lawyer, Julia Olson, argues that a court declaration recognizing the unconstitutional nature of current government practices could be transformative, similar to past court interventions that advanced justice and equality. Yet, the feasibility of such outcomes appears increasingly doubtful under prevailing legal standards and judicial perspectives. With these challenges, some suggest that initiating a new lawsuit with updated claims might offer a more straightforward route, given the ongoing and emerging government failures in addressing climate change since the initial 2015 filing. This strategy could potentially bypass previous legal obstacles, presenting fresh grounds for legal arguments based on more recent developments in climate policy and its failures.Youth Climate Lawsuit Faces Dire Path After Ninth Circuit RulingJack Teixeira, a 22-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, is facing further legal challenges after already pleading guilty to serious national security breaches involving the leak of classified documents. Teixeira, who had been arrested in April 2023, admitted to charges related to leaking sensitive information on military operations, including details about the war in Ukraine, under a deal with the U.S. Department of Justice that proposed a minimum of 11 years in prison. Despite this civilian court case, the Air Force has opted to pursue additional military charges against him, which could lead to another 10 and a half years in prison if he is convicted. These military charges include obstructing justice and failing to obey a lawful order, with a hearing set to take place at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts to assess whether the evidence is substantial enough to proceed to a court-martial. Teixeira, who worked as a cyber defense operations journeyman with top-secret security clearance, reportedly shared classified information on various international issues through a messaging app, impacting U.S. and global security interests. His sentencing for the civilian charges is scheduled for September 27.Pentagon leaker Jack Teixeira faces US military justice hearing | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

A British humanitarian worker who evacuated civilians from the Ukraine conflict was unlawfully killed while carrying out aid work, a coroner has found. 28-year-old Christopher Parry was with New Zealand aid worker Andrew Bagshaw when he was killed in the Soledar region of Ukraine a year ago. Post mortem reports conclude Mr Parry and Mr Bagshaw were both killed by gunshot wounds to the head and other parts of the body - rather than the initial official explanation of their death, which was that their vehicle was hit by artillery fire. Coroner Darren Salter, at the Oxfordshire's Coroners Court this week, cited some evidence that the Wagner group - a Russian-state funded private military company - was involved in the killing. Andrew Bagshaw's parents - Dame Sue and Professor Phil Bagshaw - have always maintained their son was the victim of a war crime and they want it to be investigated by the International Criminal Court at the Hague. They spoke to Charlotte Cook.

Today's special guest walks the servant leadership walk and has driven organizational success through others at B2B SaaS industry titans such as Oracle and Salesforce. William Bagshaw is the VP of Sales at Palo Alto Networks and a Limited Partner at Stage 2 Capital. William joins Host Matt Benelli to discuss the impact of servant leadership in sales, how to create a psychologically safe environment, and ways to motivate salespeople beyond money. Takeaways:First-time managers often fall into the trap of focusing too heavily on the measurements and outcomes. They feel that they need to pressure their teams on these numbers and often resort to cracking the whip. This is not a good way to coach salespeople and it doesn't deliver long-term results. The most effective sales leaders have a servant leadership mentality. Rather than thinking that your team is there to do what you tell them to, being a servant leader means thinking about what you can do to best serve your team. There's no such thing as a perfect deal. The best sales reps know this and have someone they can use as a ‘soundboard' to help brainstorm ways to improve a deal. As a leader, it's important to build a safe environment where reps feel comfortable coming to you to use you as their soundboard. When you have created the right environment, great reps will reach out to you and others because they recognize the need to look for all the flaws and blind spots in their deals. They will be brave and humble enough to ask for help if you create an environment that encourages that. Great sales leaders ask their reps great questions. Two great questions to ask are “why is this client/prospect going to spend X amount of money for this solution?” and “how can we move the business forward?”Salespeople are motivated by more than just money. Effective leaders find out what the individuals in their sales teams are motivated by outside of work and can use that to better incentivize their team members. When a great leader is helping a great rep, that interaction is mutually beneficial because the rep is receiving the advice and feedback they need to improve in sales and the leader is getting feedback they need to improve how they deliver their coaching.Quote of the Show:“Focusing on the end result is not true coaching” - William BagshawLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/billbags/  Palo Alto Networks Website: https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/Stage 2 Capital Website: https://www.stage2.capital/ Shoutouts:Greg Linteman Jeff BreslinPete Hesketh Kim Carpico Dave ViffietiesDavid KrebergBuckley CooneyJohn BoucherTom BonosJohn Nugent Ways to Tune In:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Yb1wPzUxyrfR0Dx35ym1A Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/coach2scale-how-modern-leaders-build-a-coaching-culture/id1699901434 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy50cmFuc2lzdG9yLmZtL2NvYWNoMnNjYWxlLWhvdy1tb2Rlcm4tbGVhZGVycy1idWlsZC1hLWNvYWNoaW5nLWN1bHR1cmU Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fd188af6-7c17-4b2e-a0b2-196ecd6fdf77 Podchaser: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/coach2scale-how-modern-leaders-5419703 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Coach2Scale CoachEm™ is the first Coaching Execution Platform that integrates deep learning technology to proactively analyze patterns, highlight the "why" behind the data with root causes, and identify the actions that will ultimately improve business results going forward.  These practical coaching recommendations for managers will help their teams drive more deals, bigger deals, faster deals and loyal customers. R., Bagshaw, A. P. Abstract: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders in children. Diagnosing epilepsy in children can be very challenging, especially as it often coexists with neurodevelopmental conditions like autism and ADHD. Functional brain networks obtained from neuroimaging and electrophysiological data in wakefulness and sleep have been shown to contain signatures of neurological disorders, and can potentially support the diagnosis and management of co-occurring neurodevelopmental conditions. In this work, we use electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from children, in restful wakefulness and sleep, to extract functional connectivity networks in different frequency bands. We explore the relationship of these networks with epilepsy diagnosis and with measures of neurodevelopmental traits, obtained from questionnaires used as screening tools for autism and ADHD. We explore differences in network markers between children with and without epilepsy in wake and sleep, and quantify the correlation between such markers and measures of neurodevelopmental traits. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the interplay between epilepsy and neurodevelopmental traits when exploring network markers of epilepsy. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.02.530758v1?rss=1 Authors: Smullen, D., Bagshaw, A. P., Shalev, L., Tsafrir, S., Mevorach, C. Abstract: Response inhibition, defined as the ability to suppress inappropriate responses, is a key characteristic of adaptive human behaviour. However, in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) it is often impaired and is linked to broad life outcomes. Previous neuroimaging investigations have indicated a myriad of brain networks in response inhibition, which limit its utility in understanding and overcoming response inhibition difficulties. More recently, it has been suggested that a specific fronto-parietal functional circuitry between the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), dictates the recruitment of the IPS in response inhibition in ADHD. To ascertain the critical role of the IFG-IPS functional circuit and its relevance to response inhibition in ADHD, it is crucial to understand the underlying structural architecture of this circuit so that the functional relevance could be interpreted correctly. Here we investigated the white matter pathways connecting the IFG and IPS using seed-based probabilistic tractography on diffusion data in 42 ADHD and 24 neurotypicals and assessed their impact on both the recruitment of IPS in response inhibition scenarios and on response inhibition performance in a Go/No-go task. Our results showed that individual differences in the structural properties of the IPS-IFG circuit, including tract volume and diffusivity, were linked to IPS activation and even predicted response inhibition performance outside the scanner. These findings highlight the structural-functional coupling of the IFG-IPS circuit in response inhibition in ADHD and confirm a structural basis for maladaptive functional top-down control in deficient inhibition in ADHD. Our results also support the notion of ADHD as a continuum and suggest that individual differences in tract-specific functional and structural connectivity could serve as neuromarkers of ADHD. 'A selfless man who gave everything to help those in need'. That's just one of the tributes paid to New Zealander Andrew Bagshaw, who was killed in Ukraine while delivering aid. He was reported missing alongside a British colleague earlier this month, and yesterday, Mr Bagshaw's family confirmed his body had been found. Their last mission - to rescue an elderly woman from Soledar - came to an abrupt end when their car was struck by an artillery shell. Andrew's father, Professor Phil Bagshaw, tried to talk his son out of going to the war-torn country, but as a true humanitarian, he set off anyway. That sheer determination, his mother Dame Sue Bagshaw says was much like that of the people of Ukraine. Due to legal processes, Andrew Bagshaw's parents say it will be some time before his remains are returned to New Zealand. Earlier, I spoke to Laurel Chor, a photojournalist who met Mr Bagshaw and other volunteers in the Bakhmut area as they carried out rescue missions in the war shattered region. She told me about the doctor, and the work he was doing in the region.

Abstract: 1H Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) is an important non-invasive tool for measuring brain metabolism, with numerous applications in the neuroscientific and clinical domains. In this work we present a new analysis pipeline (SLIPMAT), designed to extract high-quality, tissue-specific, spectral profiles from MR spectroscopic imaging data (MRSI). Spectral decomposition is combined with spatially dependant frequency and phase correction to yield high SNR white and grey matter spectra without partial-volume contamination. A subsequent series of spectral processing steps are applied to reduce unwanted spectral variation, such as baseline correction and linewidth matching, before direct spectral analysis with machine learning and traditional statistical methods. The method is validated using a 2D semi-LASER MRSI sequence, with a 5-minute duration, from data acquired in triplicate across 8 healthy participants. Reliable spectral profiles are confirmed with principal component analysis, revealing the importance of total-choline and scyllo-inositol levels in distinguishing between individuals - in good agreement with our previous work. Furthermore, since the method allows the simultaneous measurement of metabolites in grey and white matter, we show the strong discriminative value of these metabolites in both tissue types for the first time. In conclusion, we present a novel and time efficient MRSI acquisition and processing pipeline, capable of detecting reliable neuro-metabolic differences between healthy individuals, and suitable for the sensitive neurometabolic profiling of in-vivo brain tissue. P., Lightman, S. L., Woldman, W., Terry, J. R. Abstract: Epilepsy is a serious neurological disorder characterised by a tendency to have recurrent, spontaneous, seizures. Classically, seizures are assumed to occur at random. However, recent research has uncovered underlying rhythms both in seizures and in key signatures of epilepsy - so-called interictal epileptiform activity - with timescales that vary from hours and days through to months. Understanding the physiological mechanisms that determine these rhythmic patterns of epileptiform discharges remains an open question. Many people with epilepsy identify precipitants of their seizures, the most common of which include stress, sleep deprivation and fatigue. To quantify the impact of these physiological factors, we analysed 24-hour EEG recordings from a cohort of 107 people with idiopathic generalized epilepsy. We found two subgroups with distinct distributions of epileptiform discharges: one with highest incidence during sleep and the other during day-time. We interrogated these data using a mathematical model that describes the transitions between background and epileptiform activity in large-scale brain networks. This model was extended to include a time-dependent forcing term, where the excitability of nodes within the network could be modulated by other factors. We calibrated this forcing term using independently-collected human cortisol (the primary stress-responsive hormone characterised by circadian and ultradian patterns of secretion) data and sleep-staged EEG from healthy human participants. We found that either the dynamics of cortisol or sleep stage transition, or a combination of both, could explain most of the observed distributions of epileptiform discharges. Our findings provide conceptual evidence for the existence of underlying physiological drivers of rhythms of epileptiform discharges. These findings should motivate future research to explore these mechanisms in carefully designed experiments using animal models or people with epilepsy. Copy rights belong to original authors. P., Terry, J. R. Abstract: Chronotype - the relationship between the internal circadian physiology of an individual and the external 24-hour light-dark cycle - is increasingly implicated in mental health and cognition. Individuals presenting with a late chronotype have an increased likelihood of developing depression, and can display reduced cognitive performance during the societal 9-5 day. However, the interplay between physiological rhythms and the brain networks that underpin cognition and mental health are not well understood. To address this issue, we use resting state fMRI collected from 16 people with an early chronotype and 22 people with a late chronotype to study if differentiable information about chronotype is embedded in functional brain networks. We develop a classifier utilising the Network Based-Statistic (NBS) methodology, using rigorous selection criteria to select t-statistic thresholds within the NBS approach. We find significant differences in functional networks measured in early and late chronotypes and describe conditions under which the classifier achieves 97.3% accuracy. Revealing differences in functional brain networks based on extreme chronotype suggests future avenues of research that may ultimately better characterise the relationship between internal physiology, external perturbations, brain networks and disease. In today's episode of the “Helping Families Be Happy” podcast, host Dr. Carla Marie Manly, a practicing Clinical Psychologist, Wellness Advocate, and Author based chats with guests Dame Sue Bagshaw and Michael Hempseed. They discuss their book ‘Calming Your Child: De-escalating tantrums, anxiety, aggression, and other challenging behaviors.     Episode Highlights 01:12 – Dr. Carla asks Dame Sue how does one earn the title of Dame? 03:04 – Dr. Carla mentions that this book is a handful for a lot of parents and caregivers out there who are looking at their children and saying “Oh, my goodness, what do I do, or how do I call my child? 04:16 – Dr. Carla enquires, when Mom walks into the store, little Billy starts having an intense tantrum right there at the store, what's a mom to do rather than pick him up and run back out to the car? 06:17 – Michael says, we need to look a little deeper at what's causing this behavior. 08:07 – People can also have the opposite where they don't perceive so much information, we call it ‘Under Sensitivity'. A lot of these children tend to be quite clumsy. 10:00 – Dame says it's probably more to do with how the brain processes the information that's coming in from the ears or the eyes or the smell or the bits of skin. 12:39 – Dr. Carla highlights, that we look at things like school shootings, even if a child was not in that classroom, of course, they may ultimately have PTSD. 13:12 – Injury not only comes from verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse but also an experience of being terrified or the experience of being frightened, states Dame. 15:07 – Michael says, sometimes we underestimate the impact that children may have watching traumatic things on the news. 18:39 – Dr. Carla enquires from Dame, what are one or two practical tips that a parent could get in their hands and heart around? 20:15 – Dame states that anything that helps brain growth for children is important. 23:10 – What would he say about a parent who suspects that maybe a sensory issue is at work or would want to know more? Asks Dr. Carla. 25: 00 - It's about slowing down to find out what's going on underneath, rather than assuming that my child is a monster or my child is trying to get attention or my child is a drama queen, says Dr. Carla. 27:08 – Dr. Carla points out that our children, their brains need lots of sleep, but they're not getting very much sleep.  29:30 – Dame says, ensure that we have a bit of everything and not too much of anything. 31:05 – Dr. Carla imagines that food is a big part of an underestimated part of behavioral issues. 33:03 – Michael mentions that in the book, they offer approximately 40 or 50 different strategies because every child is different. But it's so important to know that there are things that can be done. Three Key Points Michael shares the key in his book that is helping families be happy together - a lot of families are getting torn apart by children's serious behavioral issues. We often know that having a child with behavioral difficulties can put severe stress on a marriage. Many children with behavioral issues don't sleep very well at night. They can wake up with nightmares, or they can wake up screaming. We know that when people are tired or when people are sleep deprived, that's when Healthy Families don't have fun.  Dame shares the tips - the first is eating together is important. If one gets that habit right from the start when they're little and then keeps it going through teenage times that's so helpful. The other tip is, if one has got more than one child, try and spend some time alone with each child. The number of bad behaviors that accrue from jealousy. Spending some individual time with each child is important.  Michael highlights how parents can know more about sensory issues – they can go down a formal diagnosis route, but other times it's quite easy to pick up. If they see a child that's putting their hands over their ears around loud noises, that could be an indicator. Another really clear indicator is, that if children either hit against a wall or on a desk repeatedly, it's often a really good indicator that they've got sensory issues. So sometimes they don't necessarily need a formal diagnosis, and then once they are aware of that, they can start to make changes. It's recognizing what is going on and not just thinking this child's difficult for the sake of it.      Tweetable Quotes “I think with children, we must try and fit from their point of view.” - Dame Sue Bagshaw “The way that we perceive the world is not the way that everyone else perceives the world.” - Michael Hempseed “People can also have the opposite where they don't perceive so much information, we call it as under sensitivity.” - Michael Hempseed Some children on the autism spectrum like their skin brushed with a hairbrush or special brushes because it feels very good and very soothing.” – Dr. Carla Marie Manly “Teachers are reporting more students with sensory issues in the past, and in some cases, it could be a response from a pandemic.” - Michael Hempseed “Any person in any situation can experience PTSD if they feel overwhelmed, terrified, out of control by a stimulating event or overstimulating event.” - Dr. Carla Marie Manly “Injuries are what is upsetting the brain processes.” - Dame Sue Bagshaw “It's really important not to let children watch the news.” - Dame Sue Bagshaw “It was found that the people that watched that repeatedly on TV reported higher levels of distress, and pain.” - Michael Hempseed “We sometimes forget that the brain soaks things in especially at night.” - Dr. Carla Marie Manly “Families that eat together are happy.” - Dame Sue Bagshaw “Just around the table together, even if it's only for 5 or 10 minutes every day.” - Dame Sue Bagshaw “It's been discovered that core sleep is a significant risk for suicide.” - Michael Hempseed “Stay away from those sugary sodas and have some water.” - Dr. Carla Marie Manly Resources Mentioned Helping Families be Happy Podcast  Apple Dr. Carla Marie Manly  Website  LinkedIn  Twitter    Instagram Calming Your Child: Twitter Facebook Amazon Podcast Editing

China's deal with the Solomon Islands has turned into an election issue across the ditch. The two countries officially have signed a landmark security deal and the Australian government's being accused of failing to prevent the deal.  Scott Morrison's judgement is being questioned after he sent his Pacific Minister to the Solomon's, rather than his Foreign Minister, to talk the country out of the deal.  Eryk Bagshaw, Sydney Morning Herald's North Asia correspondent joined Andrew Dickens. LISTEN ABOVE

Unflattering scenes broadcast during Beijing's Winter Olympics has left some viewers questioning whether organisers chose an appropriate location for the Games' big air events. Surrounding the Games' monster ski jump is four huge concrete towers that many have speculated to be connected to some kind of "nuclear power plant wasteland". Critics have taken issue with the jarring scene's obvious geographical distance from actual ski slopes, complaining it did nothing to inspire viewers and athletes alike. One commentator captured the sentiment of many when they tweeted: "Honestly, what are we even doing here?". Snowboarder Paul O'Brien agreed, saying the display hadn't once left him wishing he was "out on a mountain". "My thoughts exactly. The very best of our beautiful planet is everywhere in winter sports, and this is where they host the Olympics? ‍️Not watched anything so far that made me wish I was out on a mountain, and that ain't right," he tweeted. Another viewer suggested the seemingly odd positioning of the big air events had something to do with "money and corruption". "Aside from the money and corruption … how does the Olympic committee let China get away with putting the big air event in the middle of a nuclear power plant wasteland?" they wrote. CBS reporter Nick Starling echoed a similar thought when he retweeted a photo of the ski jump in the foreground of the concrete towers, writing: "Gotta love the nuclear power plant backdrop". Not everyone was so harsh however, with many others left stumped over what the big deal was. One journalist said people taking issue with the concrete backdrop were "losers". Another US viewer joked the power plant was to be envied, not despised. "This photo makes me so mad. WE should have nuclear reactors next to our ski slopes," they wrote alongside a picture of the ski jump. While a huge volume of viewers seemed convinced the concrete towers had sinister ties, there was actually a far more reasonable explanation behind them. Big Air Shougang Park, the only snow event in downtown Beijing, forms part of a redevelopment project set to become the world's first permanent venue for big air events. The site was formerly host to a 100-year-old former steelworks operation run by state-owned Shougang Group, which employed thousands and saw China become a world leader for steel production. Having been a major air polluter however, it was shut down ahead of the 2008 Summer Olympics hosted in the city. The zone has been transformed into a hub of office buildings, sport facilities, and cafes, including the Beijing 2022 headquarters. The grounds are now abundant in grassy lawns, greenery, and ponds, while one of the smokestacks has even been transformed into a modern event space.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
