Matt Johnson, former Mars Hill elder and drummer in the "Christians in a band not Christian Band" bands Roadside Monument, Blenderhead, and Raft of Dead Monkeys talks with us about the pre-Mars Hill 1990s Seattle Christian punk community, centered around Calvary Chapel in the University District, where Damien Jurado, Dave Bazan and many others also attended. We talk about his time in those bands, particularly Roadside Monument, who recently played a reunion show at Furnace Fest. We also talk about his 17 years at Mars Hill, what it was like being on staff as it was imploding, and the lingering trauma of that experience. -Buy Matt Johnson's book "Getting Jesus Wrong" right here: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/getting-jesus-wrong-matt-johnson/1124724146 -Matt Johnson writes in Mockingbird while looking back at his experiences at Mars Hill Church and after: https://mbird.com/religion/17-years-at-mars-hill-life-after-disillusionment/ -Follow Roadside Monument on Instagram: @roadsidemonumentband -Read about and see a video of their 2017 Seattle reunion show: https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2017/06/19/532960633/roadside-monument-15-years-and-2-700-miles-later-reunite-a-lost-seattle -Check out Zach's music by going to: https://muzach.bandcamp.com -Buy VCW merch: https://www.etsy.com/shop/VCWHall Twitter: Twitter: @vcwpod Zach- @muzach Dave- @Davejlester Podcast music by Zach Malm Logo by Zach Malm

Unwed Sailor is an instrumental rock band based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but also has its roots in the 90s music scene of Seattle, Washington. Johnathon Ford is the bassist and songwriter and lived in the famous music scene with his former band, Roadside Monument. Ford left his home in Tulsa looking for his 'Black Flag get in the van' experience, but he has since been back for about ten years. Now, in his late forties, he has continued to put out music with his band, Unwed Sailor. Their first album came out twenty years ago and has just been reissued. They have put out an album a year for the last three years, with another planned for next year. In this episode, hear Ford's stories of early 90s Seattle and coming back to Tulsa, his approach to songwriting as a bassist and how he wrote and recorded their latest album, Truth or Consequences. This week I am excited to have Johnathon Ford of the imaginative post rock/ambient band UNWED SAILOR. Johnathon has had quite the alluring career when it comes to creating and building his “friendship” with music. Johnathon's voyage through life has always been connected to music, from a child listening to classical music to the discovery of New Wave and Punk. Johnathon's longing for community has provided him with an amazing trek throughout his career. Johnathon has been a part of great bands such as ROADSIDE MONUMENT and PEDRO THE LION. With those experiences he embarked on what would become UNWED SAILOR, the band that evokes undeniably sultry sounds to make peace to. “Take A Minute” or 90 of them, and join us in our search of “Truth or Consequences” as we stroll through the “Dark Of The Morning” and “Haze” of the “Indian Ocean.”UNWED SAILOR - “Truth or Consequences” OUT NOW!!!

Today, we welcome Johnathon Ford from Unwed Sailor and Roadside Monument. Johnathon and I have been trying to make this happen for years as we’d connect via mutual friends or at a show. Most recently in Brooklyn back before the pandemic we ended up talking for a long time after an Unwed Sailor show and it went places where you don’t expect a conversation to go and all the sudden you get a text or the bartender goes, “yea it’s closing time.” I wanted to do that again so I got Johnathon to come back on to talk about his music career from his early bands to Roadside Monument and his latest album “Truth or Consequences” that is out now on Spartan Records. As with any guests that got to take in the 80s, I was smitten with his stories of Seattle, Tulsa, and what laid the groundwork for his musical taste, ideals, but also where he is today. If you’ve never heard of either band, they are bedrocks for this scene and worth your time to dive into. If you have and looking to hear Johnathon speak at length about his life, you’re going to love this too. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Jason Anderson and Jeremy Krommendyk are music lovers who fully identified with the same music scene as myself. We were fully invested in 90's underground Christian bands like Starflyer 59, Roadside Monument, Pedro the Lion, MxPx, Luxury, and Zao. We talk about what it was like then and where we are now with music and Christianity in America. This is an opportunity to talk about music, religion, and identity. Each of our understandings of what that scene was about has changed over the years. Hopefully you will discover a new great band or two and also consider your own identity as you listen.
I am so fortunate to have Johnathon Ford as my guest. Johnathon is an incredible musician known for his work with Unwed Sailor, Roadside Monument, and many other bands. We talk about going all in with music and staying true to the artistic dream. Johnathon is very open and gracious as he tells stories about life on the road and songwriting.
Doug Lorig is a Seattle musician most known for his guitar playing in Roadside Monument and Raft of Dead Monkeys. He currently plays in the band Graphic Nature. We talk about falling in love with music, the Seattle mid-90's music scene, Tooth and Nail Records, and his time with Roadside Monument. Enjoy the show and listen to Doug's music!

Ninety Pound Wuss formed in 1994 just down the road from MxPx, and became one of the first bands on the label. The Seattle indie scene at the time was quite artistic and developed compared to the rest of the country, it could easily be described as snobby. Bands like Ninety Pound Wuss and Roadside Monument had a very difficult fight to prove their legitimacy in the eyes of their peers and to get the opportunities they deserved, so being associated with and dropped into the Christian pop punk subculture gave them great exposure but came at a cost. This was an in person conversation and features Jeff and Marty from Ninety Pound Wuss, and legend Matt Johnson from Blenderhead, Roadside Monument, and Ninety Pound Wuss. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook Pre-order / pre-save Lightworker’s "Fury By Failure," out June 12th :: http://lightworker.ffm.to/fury Follow Lightworker on Spotify :: https://spoti.fi/3fZm8XD SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Ninety Pound Wuss “Something Must Break” Ninety Pound Wuss “Perserverence” Norma Jean - “I Used to Hate Cell Phones But Now I Hate Car Accidents” Live at Cornerstone ’02 Blenderhead “Bottle Breaker” Extol “Undeceived” Frodus “Lights On for Safety” Zao “To Think Of You is to Treasure an Absent Memory” Blenderhead “La Grieta” Roadside Monument “Compressor District” Starflyer 59 “A Housewife Love Song” Ninety Pound Wuss “Girl Song” MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store
Our guest this week is Johnathan Ford of Unwed Sailor. For more than two decades, he’s led the post-rock band Unwed Sailor. In that time, Ford has steered the band—an ever-evolving collective that’s included members of Pedro the Lion, Fleet Foxes, Danielson Famile and more—through a searching string of albums, incorporating the influence of ambient music, shoegaze, new age, math rock, and drone into its body of work, which constitutes one of the great under-recognized discographies in all of indie rock. Unwed Sailor’s latest is called Look Alive, and it showcases the collective’s more driving side, marrying Peter Hook-inspired basslines to rumbling soundscapes that evidence the early influence of groups like Bedhead and Tortoise. I caught up with Ford to discuss his history in American indie rock, and how he made his way from the grinding math rock of Roadside Monument to the slow-core folk of Pedro the Lion, and Unwed Sailor’s vast genre-diverse tapestry of sounds—and all zones in between.
This week my guest is Matt Johnson. He is a drummer who has been in bands like Roadside Monument, Blenderhead, 90 Pound Wuss, and many more. We discuss underground punk rock music in Seattle in the 90's and how times have changed since then. I am so proud to have him as a guest!
Logan joins Jared and Joey to discuss their top 50 bands, today they work through #’s 41-50. But before we do that, Joey rambles a bit about how faith fundamentally has to start with mystery. There’s some bonus material at the very end as Joey talks music with Matt Johnson (author and drummer of former Tooth and Nail band, Roadside Monument) and reminisces about the early glory days of the Christian Indie Music scene. “Ideas of fascism, sexuality, gore, violence, and vomit all erupts into this one package of Raft of Dead Monkeys. This is dream logic, seemingly never second guessing any impulse that they had at this point in their musical careers…” - Nick Toti Raft of Dead Monkeys was a rock band from Seattle, WA, known for their controversy within the Christian punk scene. The band featured LOR show guests Jeff Bettger lead vocal, and Matt Johnson drums. Described as a hypothetical band mocking rock culture, their early stage shows consisted of vulgar lyrics, male strippers, and bloody nurses. In an interview, Jeff Bettger (JSuffering) explained the band's concept with the following: It was art, and we were making some statements about our culture by mirroring it, copying it and throwing it back in people’s faces to say, “Hey, this is what people adhere to and this is it.” We thought it was funny and humorous, and a lot of people didn’t get the joke, and didn’t get that we were characters we created when we performed sort of to break the Rock ‘n’ Roll idea/lifestyle, although we don’t really have that idea or lifestyle, at least I don’t. The majority of the band members were openly Christian and previously played in bands on Tooth & Nail Records, a label that featured primarily Christian rock bands. The band itself was not affiliated with Tooth & Nail, but the fan base of affiliated bands (Roadside Monument, Ninety Pound Wuss) was largely Christian and was left bewildered when Raft released their first album which contained explicit lyrics. In 2001 Raft was invited to play Tomfest, a Christian underground music festival, and received mixed reactions when singer Jeff Suffering fingered the crowd during their song Two Year Lease, which features the lyrics, "you're not the only whore in town, you're just the best fuck around." Tomfest founder Mikee Bridges later issued an apology to those who were offended by the performance. They broke up on October 22, 2001. This hour long sit down with Nick Toti (Interesting Productions), creator of THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF SEATTLE: a documentary about Raft of eDad Monkeys. Is a fun rollercoaster ride of interesting stories about Raft as well as the journey of creating this wonderfully dark documentary. Nick, often inspired by avant-garde movements found this artistic feel in Raft and became a fan of their art and music. His film company Interesting Productions is a non-profit production/distribution company that was founded by Nick Toti and Matt Latham. They make movies and give them away for free. I have, to be honest. Only in the last two years have I branched out from the pale, entertainment driven, society I called home for so long, to engage documentaries and truly enjoy them. This is a documentary about a band that seemed religiously suppressed and was ready to explode into an artistic cluster fuck mocking the times. In my opinion, Raft succeeded. Jeff Bettger & Matt Johnson have known each other for over 20 years. They've played in multiple bands together in and outside of Tooth & Nail Records. Ninety Pound Wuss, Raft Of Dead Monkeys, Suffering And The Hideous Thieves together and then Matt has played been in Blenderhead, Roadside Monument, and a shit ton of other bands. They also both happened to be drawn into the Mars Hill Church culture and served as Pastors. These Tooth & Nail boys and I sit down with whiskey, beer, beards and glasses to chat about the state of our faith and our hopes for the future. Jeff and Matt also have some great times reminiscing about the record label days while I ask them the questions we all really wanted to know back then. Where the bands doing drugs? Having sex with groupies? And did MXPX pee on stage? These whiskey induced theological ramblings are an important and joyful conversation about things we may never be able to prove but hope life could be like. Matt does a rad job summing up the rambling and gives us things to think on, and then we hug it out.
