She wants people to know about Z Puppets Rosenschnoz's upcoming performances of “Tales of ᏓᎦᏏ Dagsi Turtle & ᏥᏍᏚ Jisdu Wabbit,” a time-traveling, Cherokee-language-learning puppetry adventure for ages 5 and up. Shows are Saturday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis. There are also upcoming performances at two libraries: April 26 at 10:30 a.m. at East Side Freedom Library in St. Paul and April 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Hosmer Library in Minneapolis. The show runs 45 minutes.Oogie Push described the show: It's a musical adventure that goes into Cherokee futurism, and it's just a really fun sort of sci-fi adventure. Dagsi Turtle and Jisdu Wabbit are racing through time and space to save Grandmother Turtle. So they hop aboard their Turtle Ship and travel across space and time. I find it amazing that they find a way to get to historical, important events in Cherokee history. So you visit Sequoyah and Ayoka when they are coming up with the Cherokee syllabary, for example.Chris Griffith, who is Cherokee and part of Z puppets Rosenshnoz, was an adult language learner of the Cherokee language, and so the language came to him in the form of song. And so he thought, How can I incorporate this into a puppet theater? And so he just started envisioning futurism, sci-fi, fantasy and just sort of like this hero's journey.— Oogie PushLaughter, identity and healing at the OrdwayTerri Thao of St. Paul loves the Funny Asian Women Kollective (FAWK), and she booked her tickets early to see The FAWK Hmong (+ Friends) Super Show this Saturday at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Thao remembers when FAWK was packing the house at Indigenous Roots Studio in East St. Paul, and she's looking forward to a night of laughter as a mix of familiar FAWK members, stars and some local newbies bring their comedy to the Ordway stage. Thao said: When they came together, I just thought this, this is a great idea. You know, Asian American women can be funny! My understanding about comedy is a lot of people talk about real life, right? They're making observations about things happening.And I think so many times in communities, you know, refugee communities, there's been a lot of strife but at the same time, we've used humor to cope with so much. I just think they're able to just offer a lens into that experience with some humor. Seeing people on stage who look like you matters.— Terri ThaoHonoring Minnesota's poetic legacyJoshua Preston grew up in Montevideo, Minn., and he's proud of western Minnesota's poetry heritage, including the work of Minnesota's first poet laureate, Robert Bly (1926-2021). Preston's looking forward to the launch of Mark Gustafson's new book “Sowing Seeds: The Minnesota Literary Renaissance & Robert Bly, 1958-1980.” The book explores how Minnesota became the literary hub it is today. Mark Gustafson will discuss his new book with poets Jim Lenfestey and Nor Hall at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis this Saturday, April 19 at 6 p.m. People are encouraged to pre-register here. Preston says people who arrive early can see a slide show of The Loft through the years. Preston shared why this history matters to him: I believe Robert Bly is one of the most consequential poets of the 20th century. And I'm not just saying that as a Minnesotan from western Minnesota who's very proud of our literary tradition, but I'm saying this as someone who has had the immense fortune of being able to grow up in a state that takes its arts and culture seriously. How do you get to a point in a state's culture to where that is seen as a civic good? It begins with poets. It begins with our creatives. And “Sowing Seeds'” is about the influence of one individual, by no means the only, famous writer from Minnesota, but from someone who is very intentional of wanting to go out and set a new course for American poetry.— Joshua Preston

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has for many years been evaluating emerging nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, as part of technology innovation efforts aimed at developing the energy system of the future. TVA—the largest public power provider in the U.S., serving more than 10 million people in parts of seven states—currently operates seven reactors at three nuclear power plants: Browns Ferry, Sequoyah, and Watts Bar. Meanwhile, it's also been investing in the exploration of new nuclear technology by pursuing small modular reactors (SMRs) at the Clinch River Nuclear (CRN) site in Tennessee. “TVA does have a very diverse energy portfolio, including the third-largest nuclear fleet [in the U.S.],” Greg Boerschig, TVA's vice president for the Clinch River project, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “Our nuclear power plants provide about 40% of our electricity generated at TVA. So, this Clinch River project and our new nuclear program is building on a long history of excellence in nuclear at the Tennessee Valley.” TVA completed an extensive site selection process before choosing the CRN site as the preferred location for its first SMR. The CRN site was originally the site of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor project in the early 1980s. Extensive grading and excavation disturbed approximately 240 acres on the project site before the project was terminated. Upon termination of the project, the site was redressed and returned to an environmentally acceptable condition. The CRN property is approximately 1,200 acres of land located on the northern bank of the Clinch River arm of the Watts Bar Reservoir in Oak Ridge, Roane County, Tennessee. The CRN site has a number of significant advantages, which include two existing power lines that cross the site, easy access off of Tennessee State Route 58, and the fact that it is a brownfield site previously disturbed and characterized as a part of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor project. The Oak Ridge area is also noted to have a skilled local workforce, including many people familiar with the complexities of nuclear work. “The community acceptance here is really just phenomenal,” said Boerschig. “The community is very educated and very well informed.” TVA began exploring advanced nuclear technologies in 2010. In 2016, it submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for an Early Site Permit for one or more SMRs with a total combined generating capacity not to exceed 800 MW of electricity for the CRN site. In December 2019, TVA became the first utility in the nation to successfully obtain approval for an Early Site Permit from the NRC to potentially construct and operate SMRs at the site. While the decision to potentially build SMRs is an ongoing discussion as part of the asset strategy for TVA's future generation portfolio, significant investments have been made in the Clinch River project with the goal of moving it forward. OPG has a BWRX-300 project well underway at its Darlington New Nuclear Project site in Clarington, Ontario, with construction expected to be complete by the end of 2028. While OPG is developing its project in parallel with the design process, TVA expects to wait for more design maturity before launching its CRN project. “As far as the standard design is concerned, we're at the same pace, but overall, their project is about two years in front of ours,” said Boerschig. “And that's by design—they are the lead plant for this effort.” In the meantime, there are two primary items on TVA's to-do list. “Right now, the two biggest things that we have on our list are completing the standard design work, and then the construction permit application,” Boerschig said, noting the standard design is “somewhere north of 75% complete” and that TVA's plan is to submit the construction permit application “sometime around mid-year of this year.”

He was telling us what he didn't need as well.This gave us incredible insight into Khanate economic and military policy over the next three years. See, you could go to Best Buy and purchase a 72" widescreen TV. It was what Best Buy did. You couldn't show up expecting to buy 500,000 TV's though. To get them you had to tell the manufactures they needed to build them because there was a market for that many systems.In turn, they need to buy the various components they didn't build themselves. That meant you would need to smelt more copper, produce more plastics and mine more cadmium, because they would be needed. Therefore, what the Khanate was ordering was stuff they expected to get three to thirty-six months down the line. This went beyond the war with China.As an example, the Khanate was ordering 265 Leopard 2A7 tanks from Germany to be delivered within two years. Germany didn't have those tanks lying around. They needed to build them. They had to expand the factories to build them and therefore produce all the components you needed for a brand new cutting edge tank at a faster rate than ever before.This also told us the Khanate didn't expect to build enough tanks for their own use, much less export to allies such as Vietnam. Maybe they didn't have the construction capacity, or maybe they were busy building something else. We could figure that out by seeing what else they were purchasing abroad, things like cars, trucks, tractors and locomotives.This was an excellent and powerful gift. I had to think that over."Yeah," I nodded. "He's got six months to figure out who is friends and enemies are and he might as well decide where we stand right now. If we share this data, he gets hurt, but it will mean the end of our taskforce and the end of real hard information about what the Khanate is up to as well.""Serving three masters never turns out well," Yum-Yum smirked. "Still, our regular intelligence agencies are months away from piecing together the inner workings of the Khanate and we have jack-off HUMINT on the ground. Our respective countries have 'back-burner-ed' Central Asia and now that's biting us in the ass. Barring an excessive NBC (Nuclear, Biological, or Chemical weapons) platform, I think we buy in."That meant becoming a true intermediator between our respective governments and the Khanate. The roast beast (original species uncertain) was as dry as leather, but the knife was sharp. We discussed Brooke's job hunting lack of success. The jobs she was qualified for didn't pay enough, required her to ignore too much leering and were generally an insult to her intelligence. She created some excuses about making her own way in the world then followed that up by asking if I could use my newfound influence to send some job offers her way. Brooke would have her hand in an espionage operation and not even suspect it at first. "Hercege is their word for prince, but let's not buy into the hype. I'm just a guy with a job that entails greater risk than a pizza delivery driver.""A Jewish pizza delivery driver in downtown Gaza, Cáel. Every time I see you, you are sporting a new scar, or scratch. What do you have for me this time?" she gave me a sultry 'come-hither' look. I caught it and liked what I saw. Casper caught it and sighed slightly."I'm sleepy," she yawned. "I should be going to bed.""Oh no," Brooke protested. I almost believed her. "Are you sure?""Yes. I'll take an Ambien then be out like a light," Casper said before giving my hand another squeeze."You don't have to do this," I whispered into Casper's ear. "I'll brave another one of Brooke's home-cooked meals to spend time with her." Casper giggled."Hey now! What was that about?" Brooke pouted. She was definitely going to be wrapping those scrumptious lips around my sceptre in the next three hours, of that I was certain."He, ah, was wondering if we could do this again real soon," Casper babbled, caught between fright and comedy."Soon," Brooke shot me more of the 'sexy'. "He hasn't even made it out of the door yet.""I like the way you think," I winked to Brooke."What do you think is on my mind," she was provoking me. I didn't say a word. My miniscule number of rules included not doing it with girls not in their right minds. I wanted them to be free to hate me when the time came.Brooke saw Casper off to the bathroom for her meds and the whole pre-bedtime ritual stuff while I cleaned up the dinner table. Five minutes of work now meant not waking up to the smell of ruined food later. The only thing in need of saving was the salad. I Saran Wrapped the rest of it. I was going to claim I was taking it into work for breakfast then dispose of it at our HQ ~ One MiMA Tower.Once I was finished, I puttered around noisily until Brooke came looking. I could have gone to her bed and stripped naked, eagerly waiting for sex. Since Brooke was trying to play in the same league as Hana, she might have misconstrued that as me taking advantage of her. If not tonight then in the morning when she replayed the encounter. Brooke liked to be 'in charge', so I fed that instinct.I had come here for sex. We both knew that, but we could pretend we didn't. Brooke could then want to have me and got to make sure I wanted her with or without sex, so we could have guilt-free sex together. Brooke was not overly complicated, for a girl, and she was hot enough to be worth having to go through these sorts of games."Whatchya thinking about?" The Board of Commissioners approved a resolution for this, seeking a November 2025 ballot inclusion. Etowah High School won the Region 5-6A championship with "Eurydice," while Sequoyah High School won the Region 6-5A championship with "Little Shop of Horrors," also placing third in the 5A state competition. Sequoyah's production will perform at the Georgia Thespian Conference. Both schools received individual honors for acting and technical roles. Cherokee High's Brandon Mears and River Ridge High's Tripp Scurlock earned Best Actor awards in their respective regions, with additional All-Star Cast recognitions for students from both schools. STORY 5: Brooke Ice Tapped as Lead Advisor for Cherokee Fire Explorers Brooke Ice has been appointed as the new lead advisor for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services' Explorer program, succeeding Capt. Michael Sims, who led the program for 17 years. Sims, a former Explorer himself, guided the program to numerous successes, including many first-place trophies at competitions and helping over 50 former Explorers pursue careers in public safety. Commercial: 12.14.24 FALANY DEC_FINAL STORY 6: Cherokee Commissioners Approve 85 Townhomes on Bells Ferry The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a rezoning request for an 85-unit townhome development on 10.66 acres at 6355 Bells Ferry Road. The development, by David Pearson Communities, will feature owner-occupied townhomes with two-car garages, a pool, and a clubhouse. The project includes 2.25 acres of open space for a pedestrian path. Initially proposed at 102 units, the plan was revised to 85 units after density concerns. The development will have a density of 7.97 units per acre, aligning with county standards. Despite some local opposition, the project was seen as a responsible use of the property. STORY 7: Cherokee County School Board Appoints New Chief Academic Officer The Cherokee County school board appointed Joshua Heath as the new chief academic officer on December 12. Heath, who joined the district in July as the executive director for accountability, succeeds the previous officer who retired earlier this year. With 12 years of educational experience, Heath is also a CCSD parent and spouse of a district teacher. The project aims to support the Cherokee County Justice Center's needs, including indigent defense and accountability courts. Renovations will include new lighting, HVAC, and updated interiors, with the former sanctuary space used for meetings and court graduations. Funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and local sales tax, the project is estimated at $5.7 million, with completion expected by early 2026.  STORY 2:  Raffensperger signs off on presidential election results  Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger certified the presidential election results, confirming Donald Trump's victory over Kamala Harris in the state. This followed a hand count of over 700,000 ballots, which showed minor discrepancies but no changes to the outcome. Trump gained 11 votes, while Harris lost six compared to the machine count. Raffensperger declared it the most secure election in Georgia's history. With certification complete, Georgia's electors will meet on December 17 to finalize the results for Congress, where Trump secured 312 electoral votes, surpassing the 270 needed for the presidency.  STORY 3:  Woodstock OKs Extension for New Restaurant Buildout  Woodstock City Council granted Connolly Realty LLC a 12-month extension to complete a new restaurant on Towne Lake Parkway, initially approved in June 2023. The $72,430 agreement includes traffic counts, a traffic engineering report, and concept layouts. This project builds on a 2022 study by the same firm. Costs are shared with Holly Springs and Woodstock, with Cherokee County covering $32,993.33, and the other cities each contributing $19,718.33. The project is expected to be completed in three to four months. STORY 2:  Taste of Woodstock Raises $7,000 for Wolverines Band Boosters The City of Woodstock's Office of Economic Development donated $7,000 to the Woodstock Wolverines Band Boosters from the proceeds of the annual Taste of Woodstock event. Held in mid-September, the event featured local restaurants offering small bites, with ticket sales benefiting the Woodstock High School band program. The Wolverines Marching Band performed, and judges awarded Best Appetizer to Primo's Pizza, Best Entrée to Prime 120, and Best Dessert to D'Floridian Cuban Cuisine. A tie for the People's Choice Award went to A&M Kitchen and D'Floridian. The event will return in September 2025. STORY 3:  Woodstock Midday Optimist Club Donates $14,000 to Homeless Vets Program Woodstock Midday Optimist Club President Maia Mahlum presented a $14,000 check to the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program, accepted by Executive Director Jim Lindenmayer. Early voting continues with specific hours until November 1 at various locations, including the Cherokee County Elections Office and several public libraries. The most popular polling sites are Rose Creek Public Library and Hickory Flat Public Library. One day of Sunday voting was offered on October 20. Voters must cast their ballots at assigned precincts on Election Day, November 5, and can check details at mvp.sos.ga.gov. Absentee ballots can be submitted at designated drop boxes during early voting hours. STORY 2:  Two Injured in Commercial Fire on Univeter Road A fire at Carmichael Development on Univeter Road in Canton resulted in two people being hospitalized with burn injuries. The fire, reported just before 4 p.m., involved a dump truck and Conex trailer, with flames affecting a nearby commercial structure. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and searched for additional victims, finding none. A significant diesel fuel spill required the Hazardous Materials team for cleanup. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Univeter Road was temporarily closed but reopened by 5:35 p.m. on Monday. STORY 3:  Canton Postpones Decision on Pearidge Road Development The Canton City Council has delayed a decision on a mixed-use development proposal in the Pearidge community, rescheduling the vote for November 7 to allow more discussion. The proposal by Pearidge Land Investments, LLC involves annexing 62.66 acres and combining it with 8.5 acres already in Canton for a total of 70.72 acres. The plan includes 215 homes and a 1.4-acre commercial site, with amenities like a pool and dog park. The development would feature public streets, sidewalks, and open spaces. A traffic study indicates acceptable service levels for nearby roads. The deck will have three levels and 323 spaces, with facade work starting mid-October. An amphitheater is in the design phase, with construction bids expected soon and completion by spring or early summer. New city hall design bids are due by January, with construction starting in spring 2025. The Walton Communities' residential project will begin mid-2025, followed by office, retail, and restaurant spaces. STORY 2:  Riverfest Canceled Due to Hurricane Helene The 40th annual Riverfest Arts and Crafts Festival in Canton, scheduled for September 28-29, has been canceled due to concerns about Hurricane Helene's impact. Service League of Cherokee County President Melissa Wehunt emphasized the decision prioritizes the safety of the community, vendors, and attendees. The organization is notifying all affected parties and encourages following their Facebook pages for updates. Despite the cancellation, the Service League remains dedicated to supporting children and families in need and welcomes donations through their website. STORY 3:  Hot Dog Luncheon Benefitting Seniors Postponed to Oct. 3 The annual hot dog luncheon by Cherokee County Senior Services and Stand Up For Seniors has been postponed to October 3 due to Hurricane Helene. Originally set for Friday at the Cherokee County Senior Center, the event will now take place next Thursday. Proceeds will support the Last Stop Program, providing emergency financial assistance for seniors. Those who RSVP'd should have received communication about the change. Back in a moment  Break: DRAKE – The Mill ON ETOWAH STORY 4:  Cherokee Firefighter Graduates from Public Safety Training Fire Apparatus Operator Drew Turner of Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services recently graduated from the Georgia Public Safety Training Center and was sworn in as a deputy sheriff. Turner, also an advanced EMT and fire investigator, was deputized by Sheriff Frank Reynolds, allowing him to use law enforcement capabilities. His dedication was praised by Fire Chief Eddie Robinson. Turner has also been selected for a full-time role in the fire department's investigations team, which determines fire causes in Cherokee County. The department expressed pride in Turner's achievements and his continued community impact. STORY 5:  Cherokee Career Expo connects employers and job seekers The Cherokee Office of Economic Development held its annual Cherokee Career Expo on September 25 at the Northside Hospital Cherokee Conference Center in Canton. The event connected local job seekers with top Cherokee employers, offering a range of career opportunities and on-site interviews. Participating employers included the Cherokee County School District, LGE Community Credit Union, and others. This expo is part of the COED's Work In Cherokee campaign, which encourages residents to work locally and reduce commuting time. Commercial: INGLES 2 STORY 6:  Cherokee Schools SAT Scores Top State and National Averages The Cherokee County School District's Class of 2024 achieved an average SAT score of 1083, surpassing both state and national averages by 53 and 88 points, respectively. This places CCSD in the top 10% of districts statewide. Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis praised the students' academic success and the dedication of teachers. Each of CCSD's six traditional high schools exceeded state and national averages, with scores ranging from 1058 to 1101. Despite a slight decrease in average scores from 2023, CCSD increased student participation to 57%. The district remains committed to high-quality education and student achievement. STORY 7:  Week 7 Football Games Postponed for Inclement Weather Week 7 of the 2024 high school football season in Cherokee County has been disrupted by weather, with games postponed due to Hurricane Helene. River Ridge and Sequoyah will play on October 18, while Creekview, Woodstock, Cherokee, and Etowah are set to play this Saturday, pending approval. The storm is expected to impact Georgia after making landfall in Florida. As a precaution, Cherokee County School District closed schools and offices on September 26 and 27, canceling all activities. The crime occurred on November 22, 2013, when Arms, wearing a mask and gloves, robbed the Cartersville Jewelry Exchange with a silver handgun, stealing over $50,000 in jewelry. He fled in a stolen Ford F-150, later linked to the crime through advanced DNA technology. The trial, held in December 2023, included testimony from 12 witnesses and 80 exhibits. The prosecution highlighted Arms' recidivist history, leading to the maximum sentence. Victims expressed ongoing trauma, and Arms is prohibited from contacting them. STORY 2:  Canton Woman Convicted of Leaving Puppies to Die Sentenced Amber Higdon, 31, of Canton, has been sentenced to 10 years, with two years in confinement, after pleading guilty to seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. The charges arose from a July 27, 2023 incident where Higdon abandoned seven puppies in a pink tote on the side of the road, leading to their deaths from heat exposure. The puppies, left without food, water, or shelter, died of pulmonary edema, hemorrhage, and cardiac arrest. Higdon admitted to the act, expecting someone else to find the puppies. The proposed rate would generate $4.36 million in revenue, $201,536 more than at the rollback rate. This would increase taxes by $36.08 for an average home and $5.74 for homes with senior tax exemptions. Concerns about the increase include the city's financial health and inflation impacts. Public hearings are scheduled for Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Holly Springs Public Safety Building. The council is expected to adopt the budget in November. STORY 2: Cherokee County Approves Coroner Pay Raise Cherokee County's coroner, Sally Sims, will receive a pay raise to $90,000 annually, starting Oct. 1. This increase from her current $60,000 base salary, plus fees, aligns her compensation with similar positions in surrounding counties. The salary will not be reduced during her term unless adjusted by state law. In addition to the base salary, Sims will continue receiving per-investigation fees set by state law. The raise brings her salary closer to those in comparable counties and ensures she receives annual cost-of-living adjustments and the same benefits as other constitutional officers. STORY 3:   Here's What's Next for the Ga. 140 and Univeter Road Intersection Project Cherokee County is advancing its Highway 140 at Univeter Road intersection improvement project by approving a non-reimbursable right-of-way contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). This contract requires the county to cover the $2,810,000 cost of acquiring the right-of-way without reimbursement. The project will add dual left-turn lanes and widen both roads through the intersection. The county is also seeking an update to the Atlanta Regional Commission's Transportation Improvement Program to potentially secure additional funding. The project, expected to cost around $24 million and complete in 2025, will include 16 one-bedroom, 19 two-bedroom, 28 three-bedroom, and seven four-bedroom units. Funded by Low Income Housing Tax Credits and HUD vouchers, Tanner Place aims to offer affordable housing with amenities such as a laundry room, pavilion, and computer center. This development marks the city's first new public housing in nearly 50 years. STORY 5:  Cherokee Leaders Asking for Lower Density at Pearidge Development Cherokee County officials have requested that Pearidge Land Investments reduce the density of their proposed mixed-use development in the Pearidge community. The plan includes 196 single-family homes, 32 townhomes, and commercial space on 70.72 acres. The county wants the density reduced from 3-4 units per acre to 2-3 units per acre. The Canton City Council has postponed a public hearing to October 3 to allow time for revisions and public input. The development will require annexing 62.66 acres into the city and rezoning from residential and institutional to mixed-use. Improvements to access roads and emergency entrances are also under discussion. Commercial: INGLES 8 STORY 6:    Bracco Leaves Sequoyah to Join College Staff Sequoyah boys basketball coach Scott Bracco is leaving after one season to become an assistant coach at Stetson University. Bracco led Sequoyah to an 18-11 record and a state playoff berth. With 25 years of coaching experience, including two state championships and multiple awards, Bracco is excited to work with Stetson's respected coach Donnie Jones. Stetson, which won the ASUN Conference championship last season, is looking to continue its success. Over the summer, Hall gained hands-on experience with fire investigations alongside Division Chief Cheri Collett and earned a scholarship to the Georgia Fire Investigators Southeastern Training Conference, where she was recognized by the Georgia Fire Investigators Association. This funding is part of a $1.5 billion state investment announced by the Georgia Department of Transportation, funded by surplus approved by Governor Brian Kemp and state lawmakers. The allocation includes $7.5 million for Highway 140 improvements, $4.4 million for the Ball Ground Bypass, and $1.2 million for the airport. Dr. Joshua Nelson, a Cherokee Nation citizen scholar, talks with Dr. Farina King about his experiences in Italy and work on a documentary tentatively titled, "Trail of the Thunderbirds." His documentary film project features two Native American Medal of Honor awardees, Ernest Childers and Jack Montgomery of the 45th Infantry Division, known as the "Thunderbirds," during World War II. President's Associates Presidential Professor Dr. Nelson is an associate professor of English and affiliated faculty with Film & Media Studies, Native American Studies, and Women's & Gender Studies at the University of Oklahoma, focusing on American Indian literature and film. He is the author of Progressive Traditions: Identity in Cherokee Literature and Culture, and a co-producer of the PBS documentary Searching for Sequoyah (directed by James Fortier and produced by LeAnne Howe). He is also one of the leading organizers of the Native Crossroads Film Festival and Symposium at OU. The unauthorized visitor did not report to the front office and was found with the firearm during his removal from campus. Although there's no evidence of intent to use the gun, possessing firearms on school premises violates state law. The suspect, identified as a former Sequoyah student, wasn't named. Concurrently, first responders attended to a medical emergency on campus. Both incidents occurred outside buildings and didn't disrupt school activities. The Cherokee County School District underscores its commitment to safety and encourages reporting of concerns through its Vector Alert system. STORY 2: Woodstock Man Gets 30 Years in Prison for Child Molestation Romualdo De Pedraza, a Woodstock man, was sentenced to 30 years in prison followed by life probation for aggravated child molestation and cruelty to children. Following a four-day trial, a Cherokee County jury found him guilty. The charges arose from a Cherokee Sheriff's Office investigation prompted by a child under 10 disclosing sexual assault allegations against De Pedraza. A family member's 911 call initiated the investigation. The child provided details during a forensic interview at the Anna Crawford Children's Center. Prosecutors emphasized the importance of the interview in securing justice. District Attorney Susan Treadaway commended the center for providing a safe space for victims. STORY 3: Cherokee County Students Place in State Career and Tech Contest Two Cherokee County School District students achieved statewide recognition at Georgia's Career and Technical Instruction Competition. Creekview High School's junior Charlie Holderness secured first place for his advertising campaign "Hypeman Holderness." Meanwhile, River Ridge High School's ninth-grader Aiden Maxwell clinched sixth place in the state for CPR skills. Each of the 21 winners, selected from third, fourth, and fifth graders across metro Atlanta, will receive a $100 Delta Community Youth Savings Account. Participants were tasked with envisioning the impact they would make at their school with unlimited funds. Winning essays proposed various ideas like increasing teacher salaries, offering after-school programs, providing healthier foods, and buying playground equipment for students with special needs. The Sun is a major figure in Cherokee mythology; the world depends upon her light and warmth, but is at the mercy of her brutal heat when she is slighted by her brother, the Moon. In this story, recorded from the Eastern Band of Cherokee in the late 19th century, a plan to stop the Sun from burning the world leads to the death of her daughter, and a plan to bring her back from the Ghost Country. Collins was convicted of felony murder, family violence aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony. The incident occurred in July at their home near Canton, with Collins claiming self-defense. However, investigators found inconsistencies, including the absence of blood on a knife near the victim and no fingerprints on it. Collins did not call 911 after the shooting but informed his son. The jury, after a six-day trial, found Collins guilty on all charges. Prosecutors hope the sentence brings healing and closure to the torn family. STORY 2: Woodstock Voters Could Decide on Residency Requirement for Senior Homestead Exemption Woodstock City Council is considering amending the senior homestead property tax exemption, introducing a bill that proposes a five-year residency requirement for future beneficiaries. The bill, HB 1013, sponsored by Rep. Brad Thomas, is set for a voter referendum on the May primary ballot. Current recipients of the exemption would be grandfathered in. Mayor Michael Caldwell believes the amendment ensures individuals contribute their fair share in property taxes. Woodstock seniors aged 62 and above can qualify for the exemption without income or home value limits. Additionally, other bills, SB 388 and HB 1025, aim to eliminate the cap on Cherokee County seniors' school property tax exemptions, with a local referendum election scheduled for May. STORY 3: Sequoyah Band Director Named Regional Music Teacher of the Year Casey Eubanks, the Director of Bands at Sequoyah High School, has been honored as the Georgia Music Educators Association's District 9 Music Educator of the Year. Eubanks, who announced his retirement, received the award at the association's annual conference in Athens. During his tenure, Eubanks led the marching band to numerous accolades, including All Superior ratings and 14 grand championships. He also earned invitations for the concert band, making Sequoyah the first CCSD band program to perform at the Georgia Music Educators Association's conference. The project, which began in January 2023, faced delays due to weather concerns and steel material delays impacting the metal roof installation. The library's executive director, Angela Cortellino, acknowledged the delays but expressed excitement about the facility's eventual opening. The renovated library, designed by CAS Architecture and constructed by Hollandsworth Construction, will add 7,800 square feet, providing more space for books, technology, programs, meetings, collaboration, and seating. STORY 5: Fani Willis Discloses 'Personal Relationship' With Special Prosecutor in Trump Case Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis revealed her "personal relationship" with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she hired in the election interference case against Donald Trump. However, Willis argued that this relationship does not warrant dismissing the racketeering indictment against Trump and 18 co-defendants. A motion by one defendant, Michael Roman, alleged an improper relationship and questioned Wade's qualifications. Willis stated there are no legal grounds for disqualification, emphasizing her lack of financial or personal conflicts. Republicans argue the case is politically motivated, prompting a Georgia Senate committee investigation. State Rep. Charlice Byrd introduced a resolution for the Georgia House to consider impeachment proceedings against Willis. Sequoyah JROTC raised funds and assembled the boxes, also aiding in distribution. The Malon D. Mimms Boys & Girls Club received 100 boxes with gift cards. MUST Ministries provided frozen hens, pies, and gift cards. Families receive Thanksgiving-related food, a Costco pumpkin pie, and either a hen or a $20 Walmart gift card. The initiative aims to ensure every family has a Thanksgiving meal. MUST Ministries has been supporting the community for a decade, addressing crises and fostering stability. It's one of several Native organizations and businesses that recently saw a need to refresh their image to better reflect their changing goals and purpose. This score surpasses both the state and national averages. The ACT scores by subject for CCSD's Class of 2023 are as follows: English 22.3, Math 22, Reading 23.9, and Science 22.9. Sequoyah High School had the highest overall ACT score, with an impressive 23.9. The state's average score was 21.3, while the national average was 19.5, both down 0.3 points from the previous year. ACT CEO Janet Godwin highlighted that this is the sixth consecutive year of declines in average scores, indicating the need for sustained action and policy-level support to ensure students are prepared for college and career success....……Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com   STORY 2: Ball Ground Leaders Looking to Fill Zoning Board of Appeals The Ball Ground City Council has approved a 120-day moratorium on accepting applications for variances or other appeals within the scope of the city's Board of Zoning Appeals. The decision was made unanimously to allow time for adjustments to the city's ordinance in compliance with recent state laws and to fill vacant positions on the zoning board of appeals. The existing ordinance's timeline for appeals and the new state law's requirements do not align. Additionally, the city council appointed one member to the board, but two vacancies remain. The council also approved a vending machine ordinance that regulates their location, size, lighting, security, maintenance, permitting process, and penalties.   STORY 3: Woodstock Woman Competing on CBS Game Show Airing Monday April Craig, a retired flight attendant from Woodstock, is participating in CBS's "Lotería Loca," a competition inspired by the traditional Latin game Lotería. In the show, two contestants compete in a bingo-style game to get three-in-a-row, or "Lotería," for a chance to win $1 million. The game includes "Loca Cards" that introduce interactive challenges and the opportunity to earn more cash. April Craig found the experience enjoyable, though it came with stress and pressure. They recently beat Georgetown 41-35 with a strong offensive performance, totaling 500 yards of offense, including 266 passing yards. Quarterback Taylor Jackson played a key role, throwing four touchdowns and rushing for two more. Running back Jerdavian Colbert has been consistent in the Eagles' backfield. The upcoming game against St. Andrews, who have struggled this season, offers Reinhardt a chance to continue their success. Despite the win over Pikeville, Reinhardt's defense is focused on improving after allowing a season-high in points, backed by a history of creating turnovers.   STORY 5: FOOTBALL UPDATE Sequoyah displayed resilience and teamwork, securing a 31-27 victory against Creekview in a crucial Region football match. RSV is a common respiratory virus that can lead to severe illness in older adults. This vaccine is especially recommended for individuals with weakened immune systems, those on certain medications, those with chronic medical conditions, and those in nursing homes. The vaccine is also suggested for adults aged 60 and older. Medicare Part D plans often cover the cost of the vaccine. Details on clinic locations and hours can be found on the North Georgia Health District website.   STORY 3: Three people charged with trafficking meth in Cherokee County   Three individuals were arrested and charged with trafficking methamphetamine following a traffic stop in Cherokee County. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office conducted the stop, during which they discovered the driver had an active arrest warrant, the front passenger provided false information and had a warrant in Acworth, and the rear passenger had an active warrant in Cobb County. Subsequently, authorities found approximately four ounces of methamphetamine, marijuana, and prescription medication inside the vehicle. The suspects face multiple charges, including trafficking methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and providing false information to law enforcement. Etowah and Creekview lead the county with 4-1 records. Etowah's star player, Xavier Mahoney, has been instrumental, amassing 1,427 total yards and 20 touchdowns. Sequoyah, after a shaky start, has won three consecutive games, largely due to their strong defense. Creekview, with quarterback Austin Guest, is on track to return to the playoffs after missing out last year. Woodstock ended a two-year winless streak, and River Ridge is looking to rebound after two losses. Cherokee will face a challenging Wheeler team in its first Region 5AAAAAAA game.   Story 5: CCRP donates to Rescuing Hope   The Cherokee County Republican Party (CCRP) hosted Rescuing Hope, a nonprofit focused on aiding human trafficking victims, and conducted a fundraiser for the organization. Rescuing Hope Program Director Crystal Burdette shared insights about human trafficking and their work assisting victims during the event on September 13. The Marietta-based organization provides training to various groups, including law enforcement and educators, on identifying trafficking victims and providing support. CCRP successfully raised over $2,000 to support Rescuing Hope's mission. The incident took place around 7:30 a.m., involving a Dodge pickup that struck a utility pole and came to rest on a guard rail. The sole occupant, an adult male driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash, and speed is believed to have been a contributing factor. The driver's identity has not been disclosed.   STORY 3: Free Home Elementary Teacher   Keith Furstenberg, a teacher and coach at Free Home Elementary School, has received the Award of Excellence in Physical Education from the Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. This annual award recognizes the most outstanding physical education program in Georgia public schools, based on activities conducted in the previous school year. The Chiefs, who had a slow start to the season, have turned things around and now have a 3-2 record. Jackson Hancock played a crucial role in the victory, breaking a 66-yard touchdown run when the Eagles were attempting a comeback. Hancock, a standout player, contributed both on the ground and as a receiver, finishing with 91 rushing yards and a touchdown and 60 receiving yards and a touchdown. Sequoyah's defense was also impressive, limiting Etowah's high-scoring offense to just 12 points.   Story 5: Riverfest Arts and Crafts Festival returning to Cherokee County   The Riverfest Arts and Crafts Festival is returning to Etowah River Park in Canton on September 23 and 24. This annual event offers shopping, dining, and various activities for attendees. The incident occurred in February, leading to Estey's arrest for driving under the influence and endangering a child. She failed a random alcohol test, and her blood alcohol levels were found to be significantly above the legal limit. Estey was indicted on multiple charges but entered a negotiated plea, admitting guilt to five of the 18 charges, including driving a school bus under the influence. The deadline to apply is September 2, and participants must be 18 years or older. The academy aims to provide citizens with insights into law enforcement procedures and activities. Sessions will cover topics like the police department's structure, patrol operations, narcotics investigations, criminal investigations, traffic law enforcement, and more. Participants will gain an understanding of the roles of law enforcement officers and how the department functions. The program offers a comprehensive view of police work, promoting transparency and community engagement.   Story 3: ems   Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services presented its annual update to the Canton City Council. The Fire Chief, Eddie Robinson, shared statistics on response times, calls, guiding principles, and more. In 2022, the department received 32,503 calls, with 22,950 being EMS-related, 6,596 for service, and 210 for structure fires. The average response time was 6 minutes and 44 seconds. The department's emphasis on its mission, vision, values, and fostering economic growth continued into 2023. Robinson highlighted achievements such as international accreditation, increased training hours, a new incident command system, and the addition of CPR assist machines. Pursuing dual majors in Math and Secondary Mathematics Education, Pharr aims to become a STEM teacher. The scholarship supports his career goal to teach in high-need school districts after graduation. The scholarship, worth $20,000, enables Pharr to live on campus, enhancing his campus experience. Previously a baseball player, he now focuses on academics while participating in a golf league. Pharr advises fellow students to seek scholarships related to their passions. He appreciates the supportive and familial environment at Reinhardt University, considering it his home.   Story 5: hot   Sequoyah's volleyball team faced a transition after a successful run with key players like Taylor Pecht and Skylar Martin moving on. Woodstock experienced a remarkable improvement, going from 13-22 in 2021 to 27-8 in 2022 under Coach Kelly Audia's guidance. Cherokee also had a strong performance, finishing 24-6 last season, while Etowah aimed for another postseason appearance with a mix of experienced seniors and juniors. Creekview sought progress in their rebuilding phase, and River Ridge displayed growth with a 5-1 start to 2023. The focus was on developing teamwork, consistency, and skill to achieve success in the upcoming season.   Story 6: mix   The cross country scene in Cherokee County is experiencing a shift as standout runners like Dru Moore and Andrew Balogh graduate. Etowah's cross country teams, which excelled last season, are now in a rebuilding phase with young talent. Creekview has strong depth and aims for titles at county, region, and state levels, led by Malachi Burnett and Katelynn Dollar. Cherokee's teams aim to build on last year's performance, with experienced runners like Seth Grogan. Wanted to record something just in case you missed our posts on Friday. Family stuff means we need to take a hiatus from regular episodes for a few weeks. Never fear, however, we shall return and we have episodes both recorded and in the pipes. They ain't got us yet.  And as promised, this week Sequoyah is going to mumble at you about God only knows what while he has a drink.

We're taking a summer break this week so instead of a regular episode, Sequoyah read Jack Parsons' essay "Freedom is a Two-Edged Sword" which he completed in the year following the famed Babalon working. It remains one of very few completed pieces of writing by Parsons and if you look past some needed edits (due to excessive horniness, mainly) it's absolutely fantastic. However because we are technically on vacation, Sequoyah didn't have his microphones and had to use his phone so please forgive the sound quality (it's not that bad, surprisingly).
