Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. And today's shout-out goes to Rick Morris from Bunnell, FL. Rick, thank you for standing with us through Project23. Your support helps deliver God's Word to families across the globe. This one's for you. Our text today is Mark 5:21-24: And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” And he went with him. — Mark 5:21-24 Jesus returns to the Jewish side of the Sea of Galilee, and as usual, the crowds are already waiting. But this time, someone pushes through the crowd—not a leper, not a tax collector, not a fisherman. It's a father. And a synagogue ruler. His name is Jairus. He's a respected man. A religious leader. A person of status in the community. But on this day, none of that matters to him. The only thing on his mind is the life of his daughter—sick and close to death. Jairus doesn't send a servant. He leaves her bedside, falls at Jesus' feet, and begs: “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” This is more than desperation—it's faith. That's what faith does. It moves into and through imperfect conditions. It walks into uncertainty. It reaches through desperation—toward the only one who holds hope and healing: Jesus. Jairus didn't know how his request would be received. But he had heard about Jesus. And he knew Jesus was the only one who could help. And Jesus responds with mercy—he goes with him. Faith is often seen most clearly in our moments of desperation. The singular focus of our heart, mind, and soul in crisis directs everything toward the one object worthy of our trust. For Jairus, it wasn't a physician. It was the Miracle Worker from Nazareth. He fell at His feet—believing He could heal and save. Maybe today, you're carrying a desperate burden. Maybe it's not a daughter—but a decision. Maybe not a disease—but a disappointment. Don't carry it alone. Bring it to Jesus. Run to Him. Fall before Him. Ask boldly. And trust—He still walks with those who cry out in faith. #FaithInCrisis, #JesusHeals, #BoldBelief ASK THIS: What desperate burden are you carrying today? How does Jairus' faith challenge your own response to trials? Who or what do you usually run to in crisis? What might it look like to “fall at Jesus' feet” in your life? DO THIS: Run to Jesus today with your burden—don't delay. Speak to him out loud, laying your needs at his feet. PRAY THIS: Jesus, in my desperation, I bring my burden to You, trusting You alone can save. Strengthen my faith as I wait for Your mercy. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Run to the Father" by Cody Carnes.
CICERO JAMES, MIRACLE WORKER My name is Cicero James, and I died last Thursday. I know how it sounds, and the rest of what I have to tell you is just going to make it worse. But it's true. I died, and I came back. And the rest of it—why it happened, what it means, and most importantly what we're going to have to do about it—is what I need you to hear. I'm going to start at the beginning, and I'm going to tell all of this as faithfully as possible. I'm going to try to bring you along for the ride. It's all coming out in a rush, so if I don't tell it quite right, or if I muff a word or use bad grammar or something, try not to hold it against me. And if I don't manage to convince you… I understand. No harm, no foul, no hard feelings. This is all insane to anyone who hasn't lived it. But if you're in, then you're in, and here we go. TOPICS OF CONVERSATION Overview of the Story and Inspiration Discussion of Cicero James, Miracle Worker's premise, including the protagonist's role as a modern miracle worker, and how the story was built around the opening line about dying multiple times. World-Building and Magic System Exploration of the parallel society of workers, the concept of “workings,” the nature of terrors, and how belief shapes reality in this urban fantasy world. Character Development and Voice Focus on Cicero's personality, tattoos, sense of humor, relationships, and how these elements reveal different facets of his identity and emotional depth. Themes of Mental Health and Trauma Conversation around how childhood trauma opens the door to magical abilities, and how Cicero's personal struggles influence his role as a protector of the “blissful” (non-magical people). Series Continuation and Reader Reactions Talk about feedback from readers, unexpected interpretations (including political ones), and what's planned for the next book in the series. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Hal Emerson is the author of ten books, including the award-winning Exile Trilogy, beginning with The Prince of Ravens. He is a graduate of UCLA with a BA in theatre, where he studied Shakespeare, Chekhov, and the Greek and Roman Classics. He also has an MBA from UC Berkeley (Cal). Some of his favorite books and series include East of Eden, The Brothers Karamazov, The Lord of the Rings, and The Wheel of Time. As a young reader he was particularly inspired by The Chronicles of Prydain, and he is an avid Harry Potter fan. He still believes in the Oxford comma, and he has seen every Robin Williams movie. [Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*.]One of the very best parts of having a returning guest on Collider Ladies Night? Realizing how much they've accomplished during such a short period of time. Geraldine Viswanathan made her first Ladies Night appearance in 2020 for The Broken Hearts Gallery and since has completed a four-season run on Miracle Workers, starred opposite Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks and Sarah Snook in The Beanie Bubble, headlined Drive-Away Dolls with Margaret Qualley, made Oh, Hi! with Molly Gordon which secured distribution out of Sundance 2025, and now she's part of one of the biggest film franchises of all time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Viswanathan makes her first MCU appearance as Mel in Thunderbolts*. She's Valentina Allegra de Fontaine's (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) extremely attentive and diligent assistant. Initially, she seems quite loyal too, but when Bucky (Sebastian Stan) suggests Mel secretly slip him information on Val in hopes of having her impeached, eventually, Mel concedes. While that choice may suggest Mel's willingness to double-cross her boss, ultimately, she changes course again, pushing the button that saves Val's life from the Sentry (Lewis Pullman). So where does Mel stand? Does she skew more villain than hero? Does she still admire Valentina? That's exactly what I dug into with Viswanathan during her second Collider Ladies Night interview. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The blind regains sight, and the dead rises. Is it a miracle ... or a zombie apocalypse?
I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 19th of April, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Book of Job 19:25: “For I know that my Redeemer lives,And He shall stand at last on the earth…”Do you know that your Redeemer lives this morning? Do you know that He will be standing on this earth at the last? We go straight to the Book of Romans 8:11:”But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,(thats the Holy Spirit) He (the Holy Spirit) who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” What an incredible scripture! Oh, my dear friends, we need to believe, we need to know He is not in the grave, He is alive. We need to believe that! We have a saying here at Shalom, “One genuine miracle equals a thousand sermons”. Jesus was known by His miracles that He performed, not so much by the sermons He preached, He preached very few that are recorded, but the signs and the wonders and the miracles - He is the Miracle-Worker!I just want to tell you again, you have heard my story more than once but it is worth telling again. It was down in Ein Gedi, the lowest point on earth. It was in 2012. It was so hot, we were drinking water that was coming out of our bodies as we were drinking it. I think it was well over 40 degrees. It must have been 8 o'clock at night. I was asked to bring the message. There were 5,000 delegates from all over the world, something like 80 nations gathered together. I was reading from the Book of Acts, the account of the disciples in the upper room when the Holy Spirit came upon them. I was so in love with the Lord that night and so full of faith. I said, “Lord, please do it again.” When I think back on it, what would have happened if He didn't? Well, He did, so I don't have to even think about all the egg that would have been on my face. I walked around the front of the lectern and a mighty rushing wind started blowing. Folks, it blew so hard, blowing the musical instruments off the platform and then it started to rain. It doesn't rain in that place, it is dry, it is like the moon, there is nothing there. Those palm trees are being irrigated from miles and miles away. The Lord visited us. And I want to tell you, I did not have to make an altar call, I didn't have to tell people to come forward to repent, they ran to the front. Some of those ladies were lying in the dust, just rejoicing in the faithfulness of God. Jesus is alive! Tomorrow, Resurrection Sunday, we will celebrate the fact that our God is not dead, He is not in the grave, He is alive!Jesus bless you and goodbye.
Dear Humans, Karan Soni once played My assistant on Miracle Workers. Now instead of pretending with Steve Buscemi, he's talking to the real thing. We talked about his new film, A Nice Indian Boy, and what it means to navigate family, culture, and identity in a country that feels like it's falling apart. We also touched on tariffs, current events, and how anyone is supposed to stay joyful when everything around them is burning. It's funny. It's thoughtful. It might be the calmest thing I've published all week. Take a breath. Press play.

CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of deafness, blindness, ableism. If you've ever done theater, and we definitely have, you dread the thought of having to deal with anything related to this movie and this story. And you'd be right to, because all too often we tell a sanitized, ableist, overacted retelling of a very real story: the breakthrough Annie Sullivan had teaching her student Helen Keller to communicate. So you'll have to pardon our shock while watching the original film adaptation of the Broadway success, and finding it's in fact a brilliant film. Director Arthur Penn is brilliant in adapting his own stage production by showing and not telling, a move that seems impossible for most stage to screen adaptations. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, reprising their roles from Broadway, are absolutely phenomenal. And sure, the supporting cast might as well be cardboard cutouts, but it doesn't matter when you've got a film as compellingly made as this one. CONTENT WARNING: imprisonment, solitary confinement, murder, homosexuality. The duds just keep on coming this week as a movie about one of America's most dangerous (and quirky) prisoners just collapses under its own weight. Many times we celebrate directors and casts who deeply care about their subject. In this case, it somehow makes the whole experience worse, mostly because it commits the cardinal sin of being boring. It's not the worst movie we've ever seen, but it's a real drag to sit through. Oscars ‘62 continues as we talk about Birdman of Alcatraz onMacintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 9th of January, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go straight to the Gospel of Mark 6:50: “for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” That is what Jesus said when the disciples saw Him walking on the water in the middle of a terrible storm. He is The Miracle-Worker! Oh my dear friend, I have been on a boat in the middle of Lake Galilee and I want to tell you, it is extremely deep. It is the source of life for the country of Israel. Jesus wasn't walking across a little stream. He was walking across a lake that was in the middle of a terrible storm and the disciples were fearing for their very lives. They were experienced fishermen and they knew that they were in deep trouble. What did He say? The Master said, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” He stilled the aggressive storm and got into the boat with them. There is no living creature who has ever done this before. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. That is what the Bible says in Hebrews 13:8.The same Lord asked an old woman who was well-passed having a baby, her name was Sarah, that's right, Abraham's wife, He told her she was going to have a son, and she laughed. She didn't believe it and then He asked her a question (Genesis 18:14): “Is there anything too hard for the Lord?” Well, the answer is that there is nothing too hard for Him, but why is it that you and I believe the Bible, we believe the written word of God, but sometimes we cannot believe that Jesus can answer our prayers. He can heal that sickness, He can make those blind eyes open, He can open those deaf ears, He can heal that heart problem, He can find that job for you, He can make a place for you at university where they said there's no place, He can save that marriage. I want to pray a prayer of faith for you today:Father,I pray for my dear friend who is really battling to believe that You can answer their prayers. Lord, You walked on the water, You gave an old woman (nearly 100 years old) a baby, and You can answer this prayer today. We ask it in Jesus' name, amen.God bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye

As we read about the many miracles Jesus performs in today's readings from Matthew, Fr. Mike asserts the objective reality of those miracles and reinforces that Jesus is truly the Son of God who has power over matter. We learn that in Jesus, we too can do things that we could never do on our own. Today's readings are Matthew 14-17, and Proverbs 19:9-12.
