We are delighted to be speaking to a fabulous and fascinating entrepreneur today! We have Mike Brcic, the creator of Wayfinders as our guest. Mike started a business called Sacred Rides back in 1996 and was nominated by National Geographic Adventure as the very first mountain bike tour operator on earth! Mike is an amazing individual. He has been through everything one can go through as an entrepreneur, and he is joining us today to talk about the importance of living a connected life. He also talks about scaling your business, developing systems and processes to allow your business to run on autopilot, making the right choices in your life, and deciding whether to sell your business or create a new one. You're going to love our conversation, so be sure to stay tuned! Mike Brcic's bio: Community-builder and a serial entrepreneur by nature, Mike Brcic is passionate about helping entrepreneurs live inspired, more connected lives. Via his events and adventure retreats around the world with Wayfinders, Mike helps entrepreneurs find the tribe and the support they need to achieve great things and personal fulfillment. He is a passionate speaker on many topics related to entrepreneurship, community building, and mental health. Via his [ALIGNED] blog series, he shares tips and resources to help entrepreneurs find more alignment in their lives. Isolation Community, connections, and belonging matter a lot to Mike because he found most of his school years to be a confusing time, and often felt lonely. He did not fit in too well and had a hard time finding his groove. He also felt isolated, and that feeling never left him entirely. He has put a lot of energy into that space in the last few years, however, and managed to rid himself of some of those hang-ups. Even so, he can still remember the pain of isolation. Helping people forge deep connections The work that Mike does matters to him. A lot of the work he does these days is about connecting people and helping them to forge deep connections. And all of that is due to his painful formative experiences. Research Recently, Mike has been researching human connection. All of the research says that human connection is one of our most fundamental needs, and our brains have been wired for it. Stress mode Feeling isolated throws our entire system into stress mode. Facilitation work Mike has been working with companies to help them build more connections and psychological safety among their teams. Mountain bike trails A friend suggested that Mike show people around the many amazing mountain bike trails that surrounded his town. He liked that crazy idea, so he got a loan and started a business doing something he loved! Doing things that light him up Since then, Mike has been following his new rule of doing things that light him up. And he has been doing that with heart and integrity. International trips After about ten years, Mike started offering international trips. He rebranded his business Sacred Rides, and he grew his company all over the world. Time to move on After 23 years, Mike felt it was time to move on. He sold his business in February of 2019. Mike Brcic's happiest years Mike Brcic was happiest in the first ten years of his business when he was still very hands-on and on his bike every day. He remained happy in the first few years after he started growing his business internationally. Growing In 2013, Mike became impatient with the growth of the business, and he wanted to scale it even more. He wanted to be in 150 countries by 2021. Expanding made him miserable He raised money from investors several times, hired lots of people, and expanded. By 2017, they were in 45 additional destinations. Mike experienced everything he had hoped to experience, and it made him feel miserable because he was no longer doing what he loved to do. Scaling down and implementing systems Mike came to realize that no amount of scale was going to fill the hole he felt in his heart, so he intentionally scaled his company down and implemented lots of systems and processes in order to remove himself from the company and get his life back. He has not looked back since. Companies growing themselves out of business Growing companies typically scale themselves out of business because even though their revenue increases, their expenses tend to increase even more. Reducing costs Mike got rid of all unnecessary expenses, and he also laid several people off. By the end of it, the company was profitable, and the cash flow was good. An issues list Mike got tired of putting out fires, so he created an issues list. If anyone had an issue that would break the company, they had to bring it to him immediately. If not, it would get added to the issues list, and then the core team would look into the cause of it and figure out a solution. The start and the end of the scaling down process The process took about seven months from start to finish. It started with Mike thinking he was losing his mind, and it finished with him doing just two-and-a-half-hours of meetings each Thursday with his core team. The company thrived The company thrived without him due to the systems and processes he had put in place and less meddling on his part. Mike Brcic's advice for owners and CEOs As an owner or CEO, Mike Brcic suggests you should spend your time in only a few areas. Those areas include establishing a great culture, creating a strategy and a vision for the company, taking responsibility for a few key contracts, and doing the things you love to do. Selling Mike's company ran smoothly on autopilot for about six months. After 22 years in the business, he realized he had done everything he wanted to do with that company, and he no longer loved it in the way that he once did. He wanted new professional challenges, so he hired a broker to help him with the process of selling his business. Getting free and clear It took only four weeks for Mike to be free and clear of the business once a buyer was found. He was happy not to land up in a position where he had built the business, and a new owner was telling him what to do. Wayfinders Wayfinders creates unique and transformative experiences and adventures for people, and it helps them to create lives of deep alignment. Mike started it before he sold Sacred Rides, and he was very cautious with it because he did not want to repeat the same mistakes he had made with his previous business. Mike Brcic's objective From the get-go, Mike Brcic's objective with Wayfinders was to do only two events a year and focus on making them incredible. A trap Mike realized that people too often fall into the trap of thinking that they have to find their purpose and meaning through their work. He realized that there was a lot of meaning to be found in becoming a great father and the best husband he could be. On this episode we welcome in Mike Brcic, Founder of the company Way-finders and former owner and founder of the company Sacred Rides. An entrepreneur with 2.5 decades of success to show for it, Mike is an example of what it means to put value on a customer’s experience above everything else thanks to his commitment to human connection. This interview opens our eyes to the pursuit of peak human connection and the ways Mike has been able to be the catalyst for this by providing services that promote interaction, incredible experiences, and room for self-growth. We also learn about how a small passion project can grow into a massive venture by consistently prioritizing such ideals, and how someone can be competitive in nature by their desire to advance human experience. Out conversation opens up with Mike telling us about the work he is doing today with Wayfinders (4:40), along with his sport background and how he found the sport of mountain biking that would play a huge role in his future (6:30). Mike then tells the history of the company that got Mike’s career as an entrepreneur off and running and established him success around the world (9:10). The conversation then focuses more on Mike as an individual as we learn why he so enthusiastic about the opportunity to act as a catalyst for human connection within his work (13:15), while also hearing about the role sport and exercise had on him as an individual and the potential it can have on a team level as well (17:45). Mike then introduces the term “psychological safety” (23:30) in the role it has on the performance of a team and how it applies to such a wide a variety of outcomes. In relation to career development, Mike shares his opinion on how we can better analyze and then recognize when it is time to move on from a role or company, and how much of that comes back to knowing yourself (27:00). Finally, we hear how he measures himself as a competitor in his newest role as the founder of Way-finders (32:00) and the importance he believes in balancing his purpose within the company and across his life as a whole. Be sure to listen in to Steves “Keys to Success” in closing as well (36:00).
When Mike Brcic started his mountain-bike tour company, it was slow going at the beginning. The first year, his company Sacred Rides had one client. In year two, the startup experienced 100% growth -- two clients.Fast forward, however, and Sacred Rides became a complicated business doing 7-figures in annual revenue with investors and lots of employees -- operating in over 40 countries.Fantastic right? From the outside it would seem so, but Mike was far from happy. Very far. What he found is that pursuing scale for scale’s sake is ultimately deeply unfulfilling. Most of the time it’s an ego’s hungry quest for recognition and validation. So Mike carefully planned to remove himself from the business, and eventually sold it. He had already started the business that would become Mastermind Adventures, a new but intentionally much smaller business that fulfills his sense of passion and purpose. Now, Mike is inspired by asking bigger questions:• If the purpose of an entrepreneur isn’t to scale, then what is it?• What does it mean to live a good life?• Can a company remain small (and profitable) forever? These are the questions that essentially drive the creation of a 7-figure small business. Tune in to hear Mike and I discuss the answers in the context of Mike’s evolving entrepreneurial career.

Entrepreneurship is never a straight line. That’s what Cash Flow Diary podcast guest Mike Brcic shows us through his story. He carries a lot of titles with him, but my all-time favorite is Chief Happiness Officer. Before this, and before he started the most popular mountain bike adventure company in the world, who was this interesting Canadian business owner and entrepreneur? He was a typical college student working toward graduation with a degree in economics and history. Then he graduated, degree in hand. It’s at that moment it struck him that he’d need to do a bit of soul searching because he didn’t want to work in economics and/or history. So he threw his belongings into his vehicle and headed to the mountains. He got fired from his first couple of jobs and figured out he’s not a good employee.Mike took a $10K loan, partnered with a friend and opened a mountain bike tourism company. A few years in he bought out his partner and by year nine his company was doing great. He was living the life of a lot of young men’s dreams! Even with all his success and adventure, Mike says something was missing. In 2004 he started dating a woman and after a short time she dumped him. She said it just wasn’t working. Something in that experience pushed him into an odd, disjointed path… and into a serious depression. He gave himself over to the dark forces of his depression, crawled into bed and slipped further down the rabbit hole. It took about two years to come out of it. His business was failing. He was broke. Something in him was broke. Mike said one night he woke up and knew he’d have to reach out to others to help him crawl out and up into the light. He moved into his mother’s basement, started taking anti-depressants, and then implemented yoga and meditation in his life.Mike says who he is today was shaped by that period in his life. Like so many other entrepreneurs, he was able to redefine himself from those struggles and failures. Fortunately he emerged after many months to be the man and entrepreneur he is today… the SOCIAL entrepreneur he is today.Mike says that today one of his main goals in life (besides striving to be the best husband and dad he can be) is to use business to make positive change in the world. He achieves this every day through his adventure travel company Sacred Rides Mountain Bike Adventures, and through my courses, workshops and consulting for social entrepreneurs.Sacred Rides opens adventurers to new places, new cultures and new ways of being. The company’s mountain bike trips support community projects around the world. But that’s only one side of Mike’s professional life. He took breaks to try out other things, but always came back to his biking company.Mike also works to create other social entrepreneurs, delivering workshops and courses to mentor entrepreneurs who seek to change the world through business. He says he’s blessed to have worked with hundreds of amazing entrepreneurs and that he continues to learn more about social enterprise. Wanting to make it a more formal business, he created a social enterprise think tank. It’s pretty cool! You might have to listen to this episode a few times, because there’s that much great information inside the interview. Mike’s a busy and productive man! Learn more. LISTEN NOW.
