fWotD Episode 2783: 1271 Avenue of the Americas Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 17 December 2024 is 1271 Avenue of the Americas.1271 Avenue of the Americas (formerly known as the Time & Life Building) is a 48-story skyscraper on Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas), between 50th and 51st streets, in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Designed by architect Wallace Harrison of Harrison, Abramovitz, and Harris, the building was developed between 1956 and 1960 as part of Rockefeller Center. The building's eight-story base partially wraps around its 48-story main shaft. Both sections are surrounded by a plaza, which has white-and-gray pavement in a serpentine pattern, as well as water fountains. The facade consists of glass panels between limestone columns. The lobby contains serpentine floors, white-marble and stainless-steel walls, and reddish-burgundy glass ceilings, in addition to artwork by Josef Albers, Fritz Glarner, and Francis Brennan. The ground floor also includes storefronts and originally housed La Fonda del Sol, a Latin American–themed restaurant. Each of the upper floors covers 28,000 sq ft (2,600 m2), with the offices arranged around the core. The 48th floor originally contained the Hemisphere Club, which operated as a members-only restaurant during the day and was open to the public during evenings. After Time Inc. expressed its intention to move from 1 Rockefeller Plaza in the 1950s, Rockefeller Center's owners proposed a skyscraper at 1271 Avenue of the Americas to accommodate the move. Construction started in May 1957; the building was topped out during November 1958, and occupants began moving into their offices in late 1959. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the lobby as a city landmark in 2002. Time Inc. vacated 1271 Avenue of the Americas in 2015, and the building was subsequently renovated between 2015 and 2019.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:38 UTC on Tuesday, 17 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1271 Avenue of the Americas on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Danielle.

We're still revisiting fundamentals and this week we're asking: Is your emergency fund actually an emergency fund, or just a well-intentioned savings account collecting dust (and maybe a tiny bit of interest)? In this episode, we unpack the truth about financial emergencies and reveal the flawed logic behind the old ‘3-months of expenses' rule. Let's be honest, climate change, unexpected job losses, and ridiculously high repair costs have made the classic “cash only” emergency fund advice obsolete. We talk about building a real safety net, one that's flexible, accessible, and addresses everything from the cost of repairs to those unexpected crises that inevitably spring up in lifeBuilding an emergency fund isn't about striving for perfection; it's about protecting what matters most. We'll provide practical tips, address common anxieties, and leave you with a renewed sense of preparedness – all without losing your mind (or your savings). We discuss:The Illusion of the "Checked Box": Why the standard 3-6 month emergency fund is inadequate for the unpredictable realities of 21st-century life The importance of liquidity and accessibility: It's not enough to have the money, you need to be able to access it quickly and easily. We'll dissect the hidden fees and frustrating bureaucratic hurdles that can turn your carefully-saved emergency fund into a useless paperweightMore than just cash: We discuss the overlooked role of insurance, lines of credit, and community resources in weathering life's storms. This isn't just about finances; it's about creating a comprehensive plan that addresses all dimensions of an emergencyThe Multi-Layered Approach: Why cash is still surprisingly relevant, even in a cashless society.Real-life examples that illustrate why diversifying your financial institutions is no longer a "luxury" but a necessityThe Rebuilding Phase: A practical plan for rebuilding your emergency fund in the wake of a crisis. He recounts how his career began almost serendipitously, thanks to a Craigslist job ad that led him into the fitness world. His mission is to equip others with the knowledge to sustain fitness and health as they age. The episode dives into foundational fitness principles that Breno believes are the cornerstones of physical health. He emphasizes the critical role of protein intake and weight training as primary components for building and maintaining muscle mass, which supports a faster metabolism and greater calorie burn even at rest. His practical advice on integrating more protein and resistance training into daily routines offers listeners actionable insights for enhancing physical endurance and well-being. Breno also discusses the science behind muscle retention, explaining how maintaining muscle mass keeps metabolism high, prevents injury, and promotes a healthier body as we age. Beyond the physical aspects, Tim and Breno explore how fitness ties into mental clarity, confidence, and even spiritual growth. Breno reflects on his Christian faith and how it influences his approach to self-care, urging listeners to practice self-love and view fitness as stewardship of their bodies, or “temples.” The conversation touches on replacing negative self-talk with affirmations rooted in faith, creating a holistic approach to health that balances body, mind, and spirit. Your REAL Life: Building Authentic Resilience for a Joyful Life Change is the one constant we can guarantee to experience throughout our lifetime. Nate's REAL model enables all people to build their personal superpower of authentic resilience. By using the REAL Model for growing “authentic resilience” — individuals, business leaders in for-profit/non-profit, and even clergy members— everyone can get clear guidance on overcoming life's obstacles. A practical field guide that was built to be used over and over, Nate's book (Your REAL Life and its message) is to Get REAL. Authentically resilient people use four key ingredients in living a life of joy and well-being: They know how to move through the Reality curve. They focus their Energy. They are Authentic and often use their purpose to help them navigate hard things. And finally, they lead their lives with Love. These pillars are an exceptional lens and tool to gauge life's struggles and to navigate adversity. They are ultimately, leading to an empowered life. Global Citizen Nathan (“Nate”) Andres has ridden life's change roller-coaster and is often asked about the secret to his resiliency. Between enduring 9/11, record-breaking earthquakes, and tsunamis to discrimination and loss, Nate's built a reputation for getting through the hard knocks of life. After years of research, education, practice, and reflection, he's not only found the answer but turned it into a formula anyone can use. His REAL Model helps people develop "authentic resilience" which can become a superpower in fighting adversity and leading a life of wellbeing and joy. A seasoned HR executive with more than 25 years of experience around the world and across business sectors, Nate is an author, coach, well-being, and LGBTQ activist — “OUT” there in the world helping people make change— within themselves and in their communities. If you are doing a recovery run because you are fatigued, then all the force goes across your aging joints.  The muscles can't absorb the force. I would rather you ride a bike, swim, or just walk for recovery.   Level 2: is the key to endurance fitness.  This has been labeled zone 2 in the fitness world.  When you are running zone 2, you can carry on a conversation. If you can't talk, you are not in zone 2.  The scientific purpose of this zone is to build mitochondria, the organelles in your cells that provide energy. The biggest mistake is running too hard.   This level of running should make up 70-80% of your training. This type of run requires very little recovery. A great way to build your longer steady run is progress your walk/ run sequence to 8-9 min steady run/1 min walk progressing the repetitions.  Level 3: Tempo work is your pacing for a 5k or 10k.  This is done in longer intervals. This is moderately hard but sustainable.  Level 4: This is labeled hard.  You can do shorter intervals and make a harder effort. These 1-3 min intervals build strength and power. This can include harder hill or track intervals. Level 5: Very Hard. These are short less than 1 min intervals to build top speed and push your heart rate to the max level.  These are uncomfortable but crucial. When you are run training, the majority of your running should be at a steady level.  As you build fitness, you can go up in levels of intensity. Do not progress too quickly or skip levels.  This leads to injury.  We recommend first adding tempo.  With increased intensity, you will need increased rest (days off running) . Complete several weeks completing tempo work 1-2 times per week, then add hard.  Again, this will take more rest. After you have built the fitness and resilience to run hard, then add very hard.   One major key to running healthy is to plan your week and plan your month.  Run steady 3-4 times a week and 1 tempo/hard/very hard session with adequate rest allows for fitness gains in a safe affective manner.   Key Points to building run fitness Start slow and build with a plan.  Running steady is the majority and most important part of run fitness. When you add in harder runs use the progression from tempo to hard to very hard.  Make sure you give your body more rest with increased effort. On your defined easy days, find a “cross train” exercise" that is low impact.  Your aging joints will be much happier.

This episode is for you, the architects of the unseen, builders of dreams, and designers of reality. Each of us holds a blueprint, a unique plan to construct a reality that resonates with our deepest aspirations. This episode is an invitation to start on the most exhilarating construction project you will ever undertake: the crafting of your life. The principles of architecture are not merely confined to the creation of physical structures. They are, in essence, a profound metaphor for the art of life itself. Just as an architect visualizes a building before the foundation is laid, so too must we envision the life we wish to build. The parallels are striking, the lessons invaluable. Consider for a moment the meticulous process of designing a building. It begins with a vision, a dream, often bold and ambitious. This vision is then translated into a blueprint, a detailed plan that guides every step of the construction process. The choice of materials, the understanding of the environment, the anticipation of challenges, and the harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics – all these elements come together to create a structure that is not only stable and useful but also a thing of beauty. Now, imagine applying these principles to your life. Envisioning your goals and dreams with clarity. Crafting a detailed plan to achieve them. Selecting the experiences, relationships, and personal growth opportunities that will serve as your materials. Building resilience to overcome challenges and adapting to the changing environment. And, most importantly, doing so with an eye for beauty, harmony, and sustainability. You Are The Architect Of Realities

Roberta S. Kuriloff is a speaker, community activist, former attorney and the author of Framing a Life: Building the Space to be Me (She Writes Press, July 18, 2023). With humor and poignancy, her memoir takes readers along an inspiring journey of self-discovery as Roberta finds that home is less a physical place than an intrinsic sense of self, an unshakable foundation of the heart and soul. She also published “Everything Special, Living Joy, Prose and Poems to Inspire,” and a short story she wrote, “Unearthing Home,” was published in Yellow Arrow Publishing Journal. An essay called ‘Musings on the Word Atonement' was published in “Art In The Time of Unbearable Crisis; Women Writers Respond to the Call” published by She Writes Press June 2022. As a child living in an orphanage, Roberta dreamed of being Superman's daughter flying above Earth to save the world's disenfranchised children, or being the Pied Piper leading the other kids back to their family homes. In later life, her legal work centered on families in emotional and financial crisis. She is a founding member of two domestic violence projects as well as an elderly services organization, and was a hospice patient-volunteer and bereavement workshop facilitator. In between her community work, she makes time to enjoy her passions for writing and dance. In Framing a Life, Roberta explores how those losses shaped the woman, lawyer, and activist she'd become. As she cleared land, hammered nails, lifted beams, and shivered in her rented mobile home, the answers came to her. Roberta's journey of self-discovery is truly inspiring as she finds that home is more than just a physical place; it's an intrinsic sense of self, an unshakable foundation of the heart and soul.Roberta speaks about: How writing letters to her departed mother in her journal brought her clarity and comfort during times of intense grief The concept of “home” and how that idea has evolved for her over time – from spending part of her childhood in an orphanage to learning the true meaning of togetherness, family, caring and security Pursuing an uncharted spiritual journey, and how she found solace after losing loved ones How we fit into our cultural and religious ancestry Understanding how we look at life – half empty or half full Find out more about her at www.RobertaKuriloff.com.
