Michelle is perhaps best known for her campaign Scarred Not Scared and the moment when she wore a bikini and showed the world her many scars, making the statement that your scars don't have to define you. She also delivered a hugely popular Ted X talk called "Have You Hated Your Body Enough Today?"During the episode we talk about the moment that Michelle decided that enough was enough and that it was time to stand up for herself and put some boundaries in place in her relationships. We chat about the importance of boundaries and expecting to be treated well by other people and what to do when we're not treated as we should be. We also chat about body positivity, confidence and so much more.Michelle is an incredibly empowering woman who teaches us that we need to expect more in our lives and should never just sit back and accept the status quo. Ever struggled to set boundaries in your life? If this sounds like you (and – let’s face it – it's most of us), then this week’s episode, starring ‘The Joy of Being Selfish’ author Michelle Elman, will prove an absolute saviour. Michelle is a life coach and body positive activist, best known to her 300,000 social media followers for her global Scarred Not Scared campaign. Fascinatingly, we recorded this episode London to Hong Kong – where Michelle was beginning a 14-day stay at a quarantine hotel until a strict set of rules (she wasn’t even allowed a room key to enable her to leave). Still, Michelle is full of energy and sage advice: we discuss everything from her unique self-love mantra – ‘I’m going to love myself and not make it anyone else’s job’ – and the importance of alone time for learning to love yourself. We also have a candid conversation around the loneliness that comes from setting boundaries in your relationships with others. Finally, we discuss Michelle’s love of paddle boarding – which is, for her, the ultimate alonement.   You can order Michelle’s book, The Joy of Being Selfish, now from Amazon and Waterstones.   You can also pre-order my upcoming title, Alonement: How To Be Alone and Absolutely Own It, now from Amazon and Waterstones.   Twitter: *  @ChezSpecter * @ScarredNtScared * Instagram:   @alonementofficial * @ChezSpecter * @scarrednotscared * Contact: press@alonement.com

Today on the podcast we have the incredible Michelle Elman! Michelle is a five board accredited body confidence coach and an award-winning body positive activist. She went viral after posting a bikini picture on Instagram with the hashtag, #ScarredNotScared, starting a global conversation about surgery, illness, chronic pain and ultimately scars. Michelle has since been featured in multiple media sources, given a TedX talk, wrote a book, and was awarded the Body Positive Activist of the Year by Yours Awards. Today we talk about what brought Michelle to the place of loving her body and helping others love theirs, the multiple surgeries she has endured, and what that felt like for Michelle. She also shares with us about dying and coming back to life at the young age of 11, and the day that she decided to start her campaign and wear a bikini. Michelle even explains to us just what the new-age therapy technique, havening, is and how it helped her confront and heal through past traumas. This conversation is a beautiful reminder of just how amazing our bodies are, and how we should embrace our scars, inside and out.   We also talk about… How her illnesses affected the relationship between her and her family The moment she realized she was being viewed differently Her journey with her weight mindset Learning to be confident in an unexpected way Being diagnosed with PTSD Deciding to become a life coach Body shaming and other forms of shame Tips to feel better with your body Fears surrounding sex Michelle’s book, Am I Ugly?   Find more to love at almost30podcast.com!   Resources: Learn more: michelleelman.com Instagram: @scarrednotscared Youtube: youtube.com/michelleelman   Watch: Michelle’s TedX Talk   Read: Am I Ugly? I chat with Michelle Elman – Board Certified Life Coach and creator of the Scarred Not Scared campaign – on her story of having gone through 15 surgeries before the age of 20, the problem with “healthy is the new skinny” and why health is not always a choice. In this episode, we chat about: • Michelle’s relationship to her body over the years having gone through various surgeries that left scars and how she learned to embrace her scars • How her experience with survivor’s guilt created shame and how sharing her story helped her heal • The importance of speaking about our stories to relieve shame • How to get comfortable and accept a changing body • Why body positivity is not necessarily what the mainstream makes it out to be • Why health is not always a choice and the problem with promoting “healthy as the new skinny” • What beautiful means and how Michelle’s perception of this has evolved over the years • How we can make the body positive movement more inclusive • Plus so much more!
