“It doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it works, and you don't know if it works unless you experiment with it. In order to get good at everything you got to break it all up and pull it apart. Find the common thread, that's how the styles will merge.” -- Erik PaulsonMy guest on this episode is Erik Paulson who is an Encyclopedia of Martial Arts and the first American to win the World Light Heavyweight Shooto Championship in Japan. He was trained by legendary instructors like Guro Dan Inosanto, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, Gene Lebell, Yori Nakamura, Rigan Machado, Rickson Gracie, Tim Tackett, Ajarn Chai, and Billy Robinson. He is a multi-style Black Belt and master instructor of Jeet Kune Do, Kick Boxing, Savate, Shoot Fighting, Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, and a 6'th degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling and STX Kickboxing. He runs the CSW Training Center in Fullerton, California, where he has trained MMA Fighters like Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Cub Swanson, Sean Sherk, James Wilks, and Brock Lesnar. This episode is all about connection and seeking the common thread in all martial arts. My key takeaway is that martial arts is a creative act. We must be humble and open so that we can learn and absorb from all sources. What we learn must be tested so that we know that we can make it work, and the only way to test it is to experiment with it. Martial Arts is a creative process, of transforming knowledge, wisdom, to understanding. Erik Paulson is a true genius of the game, his understanding of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of martial arts sets him apart and allows him to mentor and guide his students toward excellence. This is a special episode, filled with insight and old-school stories of Jeet Kune Do and the development of MMA from someone who has first-hand knowledge and experience. Tune in for an unforgettable episode.
A long time in the making, we are excited to announce our podcast with Hawaii Gubernatorial candidate and UFC Champion, BJ Penn!An American former professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. Penn competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and in K-1. Penn was the first American Gold medalist of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. In mixed martial arts, Penn has competed in the Featherweight, Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight, and Heavyweight/Openweight divisions. A former UFC Lightweight Champion and UFC Welterweight Champion, he is the second of seven fighters in UFC history to win titles in multiple weight classes.[5] Penn fought to a draw against Caol Uno in the UFC 41 Lightweight Tournament.[6] Through his tenures as champion, Penn unofficially unified the UFC Lightweight Championship (against Sean Sherk)[7][8] and broke the all-time lightweight title defense record. In 2015, Penn was made the inaugural inductee into the Modern-era wing of the UFC Hall of FameHe is currently running for Governor of Hawaii in a tightly contested race - An amazing episode!
For 30 years, Coach Greg Nelson has overseen the training and development of thousands of combat sports athletes at his gym The Academy in Minnesota. Among these fighters and champ that he has helped produce, Brock Lesnar, Kaitlin Young, Brock Larson, Sean Sherk, Dave Menne and Nick Thompson. He is also a regular part of UFC Straw-weight former reigning champ Rose Namajunas team. Coach Nelson talks about his approach, philosophies and methods that he employs from entry level novice hobbyists all the way up to UFC World Champions. He talks both about how training and the sport has evolved and changed, and what attributes and features are remain ever present in High-Level elite performers.I was happy and reassured to hear that many of principles and approaches that Coach Nelson has employed so successfully, are very much aligned with the broader underpinnings of ecological dynamics. I particularly appreciated the apparent autonomy and creativity he fosters in his training environment and his approach to ethical and sensible training to promote longevity and skill development. On this episode we look back at the fight between Sean Shark and Evan Dunham while enjoying a barrel aged stout from Revolution Brewing called Vanilla Deth.
Two of the fiercest fighters to ever fight in the Lightweight Division... and they have the CHAMPIONSHIPS to prove it. SEAN SHERK & FRANKIE EDGAR both had their time at the top of the mountain, but with very different stories."The Muscle Shark" Sean Sherk was fighting guys twice his size early on his career with battles against Karo Parysian, Matt Hughes, GSP, and Nick Diaz... but once he settled into his natural division at Lightweight, he was nearly unstoppable. We will look at his Hall of Fame worthy career and the PED scandal that may have tainted it in the eyes of alot of fans.Frankie "The Answer" Edgar also knew about being undersized, but never let it keep him from success. The New Jersey native and product of Renzo Gracie always showed an immense amount of heart and was able to win some of the toughest fights in UFC history. We will talk about his rise to the UFC Lightweight Championship and some of those epic battles with Gray Maynard, BJ Penn, and even Sean Sherk! Also, how much more does Frankie have in the tank for his Hall of Fame career!?IN THIS CORNER WITH CYRUS FEES is now featured on AdFreeShows.com alongside amazing podcasts like 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff, Grilling JR with Jim Ross, and Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard. My guest today is Erik Paulson, Erik is the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling, and STX Kickboxing, where he trains MMA fighters such as Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Renato Sobral, Cub Swanson, and James Wilks. Erik started his career in martial arts starting with judo at age of 8. However, he got disillusioned after failing to use it in self-defense, when a bully blocked his hip throw by pulling his hair and forced Erik to strike him in order to win. Convinced that striking arts were the best to defend himself, he took up taekwondo, boxing and karate, among other arts. Many years after, he moved to California and became a student under Dan Inosanto, learning styles like Jeet Kune Do, arnis/kali/eskrima, wing chun and silat. He is closely affiliated with Sean Sherk and Brock Lesnar of the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy. As well, Paulson was the striking coach for Team Lesnar on The Ultimate Fighter: Season 13, and he is the co-author of a book along with American Combat Association president Matthew Granahan and JD Dwyer on the History of American Submission Wrestling. Erik played Kumite fighter Stellio in Bloodsport III, where he faced Daniel Bernhardt and had trained Djimon Hounsou in shoot wrestling for his role of mixed martial arts instructor Jean Roqua in the 2008 action drama Never Back Down. I talk to Greg Nelson, who was the coach for UFC champions Brock Lesnar, Sean Sherk and Rose Namajunas. He is a 4th Degree BJJ Blackbelt, Division 1 Folkstyle Wrestler, All American Gymnast and Muay Thai kickboxer along with multiple other martial arts. We discuss how he creates a positive culture in his gym while utilising visualisation, affirmation and building relationships. How this also contributed to his incredible battle against cancer where after beating it once he overcame a different form of rare nerve cancer which has intrigued medical scientists. And we also discuss technical aspects of coaching and cornering fighters in the cage.

TJ De Santis and Jeff Sherwood returned to the Sherdog Radio Network Wednesday for another edition of "Beatdown." On this broadcast they're joined by UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock and former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk. On Friday night in Houston, Texas Ken Shamrock wanted to close the book on his rivalry with Royce Gracie. Instead he wrote another chapter with what he feels was an inconclusive ending. The MMA pioneer joined De Santis and Sherwood to discuss his TKO loss, how he is going about appealing the contest that appeared to end in part to a low-blow, and what is left for him in mixed martial arts. Another fighter who's MMA career has been punctuated with an ellipses rather than a period is former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk. "The Muscle Shark" joined the program to discuss his desire to fight Royce Gracie, his life outside of active MMA competition, and why if he does fight it will most likely not be inside the UFC's octagon. TJ and Jeff also react to the news that Nate Diaz will now face featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 196, how the bout might look on March 5th, and why Diaz as in fact tabbed as the winner of the "Whp Get's to Fight McGregor Sweepstakes."
Featuring Chael Sonnen, BJ Penn, Don Frye, Renzo Gracie, Sean Sherk, Braulio Estima, Michael Chandler, and Ben Fowlkes.
