There is no replacing Matt Serra. But when the champ can't make the show, it's never a bad idea to get another champ to fill in — and that's exactly what today's Unfiltered episode delivers with Forrest Griffin talking UFC 319 w/ guest callers Geoff Neal and Chase Hooper. First up, 11th-ranked welterweight Geoff Neal reflects on his inspiring journey from a life-threatening ICU stay in 2020 to competing at the highest level in the UFC. He breaks down his upcoming matchup with Carlos Prates and weighs in on whether “MMA math” applies when comparing each of their recent losses to Ian Machado Garry. Then, Chase Hooper — just 25 years old and already entering his 12th UFC fight — talks about taking on Alexander Hernandez, a dangerous striker with only one submission loss in 24 pro bouts. Usually on dad duty 50+ weeks a year, Chase shares how his locked-in fight-week mentality has brought out his best performances since moving up to 155 pounds. Having seen many of UFC 319's fighters up close in his role at the UFC Performance Institute, Forrest offers sharp analysis for a comprehensive breakdown of the sneaky-good matchups that round out Saturday's stacked card.
In today's episode, I sit down with UFC Hall of Famer and VP of Athlete Development, Forrest Griffin, to talk about humor, preparation, and why confidence comes from doing the work. Forrest shares how he learned to use humor as a tool, what it means to “fake it till you feel it,” and why getting your mind out of the way is often the best thing you can do under pressure. We talk about setting purpose-driven goals, tracking growth, and trusting the body's instincts. From training sessions to life lessons, Forrest brings sharp insights, quick wit, and a brutally honest look at what it takes to keep growing.
Miesha Tate and Bo Nickal drop in for a stacked Wednesday edition of UFC Unfiltered — with UFC Hall of Famer Forrest Griffin joining midway through to take the reins on Bo's interview. Miesha opens up about what it's like balancing motherhood with life in the Octagon during her second UFC stint after stepping away from the sport for nearly five years. She breaks down her upcoming fight against fellow longtime vet Yana Santos and reflects on what keeps her motivated after nearly two decades in MMA. Then it's Bo Nickal time, and Forrest Griffin couldn't resist hopping on to steer the conversation. Bo shares what he learned from going the distance for the first time in his career against Paul Craig, his take on Reinier de Ridder's ground game, and how he feels his skillset has developed since his amateur MMA debut. Forrest sticks around through the end of the show to hear Jim and Matt's picks for UFC Fight Night: Des Moines — chiming in on matchups as an observer without predictions of his own.

We then discuss the importance of authenticity in building a personal brand, focusing on how humor can enhance this. Dane shares insights on mentoring young comedians, emphasizing the need to protect one's integrity in the entertainment industry. Finally, I reflect on the power of mentorship and the significance of planting seeds for future generations, recognizing how these efforts lay the foundation for a stronger, more enlightened future. Our Great Coach on this episode is Matt Thornton. Matt is a Brazilian Ju Jitsu coach, who has coached some of the greatest Mixed Martial Arts fighters in the world. He is the founder of the Straight Blast Gym, where he has developed cross training in several martial arts as well as boxing and wrestling. The gym now has over 50 affiliate academies located around the world. Fighters he has coached include Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin, and Dan Henderson while he has also helped develop the careers of coaches like John Kavanagh and Karl Tanswell. He is also a guest lecturer on philosophy and has recently published a book called The Gift of Violence: Practical Knowledge for Surviving and Thriving in a Dangerous World. In this philosophical and insightful interview some of the highlights for me were: • His core philosophy of Aliveness, which emphasizes training on timing, energy and motion through competing to deliver repeated experiments. • The idea that you can't acquire meaningful skill in Brazilian Ju Jitsu without submitting 1000's of times. And through this approach to testing and learning through failure you achieve progress • And his belief that "frustration in the moment is almost always a useless emotion. So you run into a problem in a fight, or you run into a problem in a match. That's something that we're here to solve. That's a puzzle that will admit to a solution."
