There are more than 2,300 Bible passages that speak about money. Why? Money is a master Satan frequently tempts us to serve. In fact, out of all the masters competing for our service besides God, money is probably at the top of the list. Money provides us with a false comfort and sense of security. Money serves as a source of pride. This week, Jesus' sharp words identify the impossibility of serving more than one master. More, Jesus teaches that if we dedicate our lives in service to money, money will always let us down. In contrast, God has proven that he is a master worth serving. When we serve God, money is put in its proper place. Instead of it being a master to serve, it becomes a tool in our service of our true Master. Theme: No one can serve 2 masters. Intro – Serving Self & Money (6:4-6, 12; also 8:4-6) Amos 6:4-6 (NASB) 4 Those who lie on beds of ivory,And lounge around on their couches,And eat lambs from the flock,And calves from the midst of the fattened cattle,5 Who improvise to the sound of the harp,And like David have composed songs for themselves,6 Who drink wine from sacred bowlsWhile they anoint themselves with the finest of oils—Yet they have not grieved over the collapse of Joseph. Amos 6:12 (NASB) 12 Do horses run on rocks?Or does one plow them with oxen?Yet you have turned justice into poison,And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood. Amos 8:4-6 (NASB) 4 Hear this, you who trample the needy, to put an end to the humble of the land, 5 saying, “When will the new moon be over, So that we may sell grain; And the Sabbath, so that we may open the wheat market,To make the ephah smaller and the shekel bigger,And to cheat with dishonest scales,6 So as to buy the helpless for money,And the needy for a pair of sandals,And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?” God's Attributes in Judgment: 1. Mercy (7:1-3) Amos 7:1-3 (NASB) 1 This is what the Lord God showed me, and behold, He was forming a swarm of locusts when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king's mowing. 2 And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said, “Lord God, please pardon! How can Jacob stand? For he is small.”3 The Lord relented of this. “It shall not be,” said the Lord. 2. Patience (7:4-6) Amos 7:4-6 (NASB) 4 So the Lord God showed me, and behold, the Lord God was calling to contend with them by fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the farmland. 5 Then I said, “Lord God, please stop! How can Jacob stand? For he is small.”6 The Lord relented of this. “This too shall not be,” said the Lord God. 3. Righteousness (7:7-17) Amos 7:7-17 (NASB) 7 So He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand. 8 And the Lord said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold I am about to put a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel. I will not spare them any longer. 9 The high places of Isaac will become deserted, and the sanctuaries of Israel will be in ruins. Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.” 10 Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. 11 For this is what Amos says: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.'” 12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go, you seer, flee to the land of Judah; and eat bread there and do your prophesying there! 13 But do not prophesy at Bethel any longer, for it is a sanctuary of the king and a royal residence.” 14 Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. 15 But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go prophesy to My people Israel.' 16 So now hear the word of the Lord: you are saying, ‘You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you prophesy against the house of Isaac.' 17 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line, and you yourself will die upon unclean soil. Furthermore Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.'” 4. Justice (8:1-14) Amos 8 (NASB) 8 This is what the Lord God showed me, and behold, there was a basket of summer fruit. 2 And He said, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel. I will not spare them any longer. 3 The songs of the palace will turn to wailing on that...

What is God making aware of your motives and your loyalties? (Psalms 139:23-24; searching moral inventory) 3. In what ways have you made choices to serve God? 4. Who are your other “gods”? Ps. Jeffrey Rachmat challenges believers to examine what it means to serve God wholeheartedly. He reminds us that when we fully trust in God, money should never be the deciding factor in our decisions. Looking at Jesus' life, we see how He continually strengthened His disciples' faith through miracles and daily encounters. Likewise, God leads us through experiences to grow our faith, teaching us to see every situation through the lens of His possibilities. This sermon challenges us to embrace a faith that sees divine possibilities in every circumstance.
Jeremiah, often called the “weeping prophet” because of his sorrow over the persistent message of God's judgment, prophesied to the nation of Judah from the reign of King Josiah in 627 b.c. until sometime after the destruction of Jerusalem in 586. He dictated his prophecies to a scribe named Baruch (36:4, 32). Jeremiah's task as a prophet was to declare the coming judgment of God. However, throughout the book we also see God's concern for repentance and righteousness in individuals as well as nations. This dual focus is seen in God's instructions to Jeremiah: he was “to pluck up and to break down” but also “to build and to plant” (1:10). Jeremiah sees a future day when God will write his law on human hearts, and “they shall all know me,” and “I will remember their sin no more.”FaithLife Christian Ministries:Download our Free App:https://get.theapp.co/hghqPodcast:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/faithlife-christian-ministries/id1606442323Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/faithlifecmInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/faithlifecm?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==X:https://x.com/faithlifecmLinkedin:https://www.linkedin.com/in/faithlife-christian-ministries-82ab77191/YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@FaithLifeChristianMinistriesWebsite:https://faithlifecm.comDonate: https://subsplash.com/u/faithlifechristianminist/giveTable Talk with Yvette Gallinar:https://www.instagram.com/yvette_gallinar/https://www.facebook.com/yvettegallinarhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/table-talk-with-yvette-gallinar/id1729036339https://rumble.com/user/tabletalkwithyvettegallinarhttps://x.com/Yvettegallinarhttps://www.youtube.com/@tabletalkwithyvettegallinar

To serve two masters is like chasing two rabbits at the same time that are going into opposite directions.
Matthew 6:24 (KJV) says: "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." While this particular scripture is mainly referring to money (mammon), serving two masters can also apply to other aspects of our lives. The bible tells us of the dangers of having other things (or people) in our lives that occupy our lives more than God. This can be dangerous. Find out what God tells about letting our lives get into this condition.

Sermon Resources: 1. “The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.” -Ecclesiastes 1:8 2. “Desire alone, of acquiring goods and possessions for ourselves and our nearest friends, is insatiable, perpetual, universal.” -David Hume, "A Treatise of Human Nature" 3. "I can't get no satisfaction." -Mick Jagger, "Satisfaction" 4. “In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by a relatively small number of persons who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.” -Edward Bernays, "Propaganda" 5. “Our enormously productive economy demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption…The greater the pressures upon the individual to conform to safe and accepted social standards, the more he tends to express his aspirations and his individuality in terms of what he wears, drives, eats, his home, his car, his food, his hobbies. We need things consumed, burned up, worn out, replaced, and discarded at an ever-increasing pace. We need to have people eat, drink, ride, live with ever more complicated and, therefore, constantly more expensive consumption. ” -Victor Lebow, "The Journal of Retailing: 1955" 6. Unhappy? Unattractive? Unsuccessful? Unmarried? Unfulfilled? Come to Christ and he'll give you all these things you asked for. We forget that God is not primarily in the business of meeting our wants. When we make him out to be, we squeeze him out of his rightful place at the center of our lives, and we put ourselves in his place. God is in the business of being God - of redeeming and restoring and forgiving and healing and loving. Christianity cannot be reduced to meeting peoples' wants, and when we make it so, we invariably distort the Gospel message.” -David Henderson, "Culture Shift" 8. Part 4 wraps up our “You Can't Serve Two Masters” series. Pastor Rich explores the parable of the shrewd manager and what it has to say about money and eternity.
You Can Not Serve Two Masters. What Actually is Jesus Telling Us? After hearing about the actions we do each time we hear the Gospel read by the Deacon or Priest, the Homily focuses on today's Gospel. Jesus looks around and sees the human heart in a specific light. Jesus says sooner or later one must commit their heart. One must decide how they are going to live. Jesus tells us that we cannot serve two masters. Let's be blunt. Everyone serves someone else. Sometimes we serve our own ambition. Sometimes we serve our fears that control us. We are all serving someone or something. The Lord says, let's be honest. You cannot serve two masters. The Lord again teaches us a lesson. You cannot serve God and serve a spirit of grasping after things. That spirit runs counter to the Gospel. Hear more within this Homily.
