This is a re-airing of a podcast originally released in February 2021.Prepare to feel relaxed, tingly and amazed all in the space of 20 minutes. This episode is all about sound. We start with the musical tones of an elephant trumpeting, followed by a recording from Cornell University's Elephant Listening Project, showing how they communicate at an infrasonic frequency, which humans can't ordinarily detect. The team then attempts to send shivers down your spine by recreating ASMR, explaining why some people enjoy the sound of whispering, rustling crisp packets or apple biting. They also share a range of audio illusions, and close the show with the soothing sounds of white noise, created by Stephane Pigeon from www.mynoise.net.Shepard Tone and Binaural Beats courtesy of Alexander from www.orangefreesounds.com under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. On the pod are Rowan Hooper, Bethan Ackerley and Timothy Revell. Every once in a while, JF and Phil like to do a “song swap.” Each picks a song, and the ensuing conversation locates linkages and correspondences where none was previously thought to exist. In this episode, they are joined by the music scholar Meredith Michael – Weird Studies assistant, and co-host of Cosmophonia, a podcast about music and outer space – to discuss songs by Lili Boulanger, Vienna Teng, and Iron & Wine. Before long, this disparate assortment personal favourites occasions a weirdly focused dialogue on time, impermanence, control, (mis)recognition, and the affinity of art and synchronicity. After Tom Shone convinced Christopher Nolan to participate for the first time in a book about the filmmaker's career, the writer/director warned Shone that he is “the most visible reclusive director in America.” The result of their collaboration is subtitled The Movies, Mysteries, and Marvels of Christopher Nolan, a book that is one part biography, filmography analysis, interview, digressive essay on influences, and, now, the definitive book on the filmmaker's career. On today's episode we talk:- how the book shaped itself around an exploration of Nolan's influences from Jorge Luis Borges or Raymond Chandler;- Nolan's conceptually effective musical usage of theories like the Shepard Tone;- his experimental sound mixes;- and their punk rock embrace and dismissal of left-brain concepts like plot-based dialogue.Also:- How Shone realized his book was going to encompass Nolan's latest despite the filmmaker's secrecy;- the tenuousness of many studio filmmakers' commercial/critical streak, their downfalls;- how Nolan has maintained a consistency by proving concepts;- and if his recent film Tenet, on that basis, is indeed the filmmaker apotheosis — or his Waterloo.Shone is film critic for The Sunday Times and author of five books, including Blockbuster: How Hollywood Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Summer and Martin Scorsese: A Retrospective. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, the Times Literary Supplement, The Economist, and Vogue. The Nolan Variations is published by Penguin Random House and is available at online and brick-and-mortar booksellers.
Ezekiel speaks out the Sovereign LORD's judgment on an historical figure called, "The King of Tyre." Beginning with the 'Ruler' of Tyre, the prophecy has been taken to transcend the original reference point of a human ruler and, instead, has been elevated to explain the fall of the devil, himself. It's a fascinating concept, well articulated in this article:https://www.blueletterbible.org/faq/don_stewart/don_stewart_82.cfmOriginal image by Comfreak of PixabayNew International Version - UK (NIVUK)Holy Bible, New International Version® Anglicized, NIV® Copyright © 1979, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc.® Used by permission. The place where the text ends and the louder music kicks in reminds me of some of the drama of Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds."In the background is a "Shepard Tone" - an ever rising theme to represent the constant arrogance of those who set themselves up against the Most High.

Grand Central, New York lockdown sound reimagined by Ariel Mioduser. "I found this sound so appealing because Grand Central station represents in a way such an opposite to the situation we’re going through now – one of social distancing, almost complete closure of the city and the cultural life, and limited freedom of movement. "In addition, the sound and content of the Covid announcements that replace the usual ones about leaving trains and directions, manage to make palpable this dystopian situation and illustrate it in a very concise way. "As for the creative approach, I tried to bridge the gap between those opposed realities through the use of sound. For example, by recreating the trains sound through the manipulation of the crowd voices, or by emphasizing the human voices, laughs and calls in a situation where they are much more absent than in regular times. "In addition I tried to illustrate the atmosphere of alienation and distancing through the use of bass guitar and synthesizer sounds. The piece ends with an ascending Shepard Tone effect that uses as its source the crowd voices. It is at the same time a somewhat terrifying and scaling up optimistic sound – much as this confusing and unclear period." Part of the #StayHomeSounds project, documenting and reimagining the sounds of the global coronavirus lockdown around the world - for more information, see http://www.citiesandmemory.com/covid19-sounds
Much like glitter, the Shepard tone seems infinite. A tone that appears to rise in pitch forever, the Shepard tone is actually a clever auditory illusion that takes advantage of the brain's inability to process sound with 100% accuracy. Quill and Duncan explain how the tone is made and why it works, give examples of its use, and demo some other auditory illusions. This podcast features original dialogue and music (except the Risset Rhythm which is used under the Creative Commons license). We hope you enjoy!
