Wikipedia. This week on Time on Screen, we're talking about Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk in an episode sponsored by our friends at William Wood Watches. In celebration of the release of their most ambitious watch to date, William Wood CEO Jonny Garrett joined Zach Kazan and Kyle Snarr on stage at the San Francisco Windup Watch Fair to talk about Nolan's film and share the story of the Dunkirk Watch. The new limited edition watch was made in partnership with and in tribute to the Massey Shaw, a London Fire Brigade Fire Boat that played an important role in evacuating British forces from Dunkirk Beach in the early stages of World War II. The watch is filled with small and large tributes to the Massey Shaw. The dial is modeled after the telegraph found in the wheelhouse of the Massey Shaw used by the Captain on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel, for example. And each example of the Dunkirk Watch will have a small piece of the Massey Shaw's engine fitted into the caseback, which depicts Operation Dynamo, the plan that led to the historic evacuation. In this episode, you'll hear Zach, Jonny, and Kyle discuss what Dunkirk means to them, and why they feel it's among Nolan's best films. And Jonny goes into detail about the making of the Dunkirk Watch, including his experience onboard the actual Massey Shaw, which is currently being refurbished ahead of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. William Wood Watches have donated £10,000 GBP to the Massey Shaw Partnership Trust to help fund this effort, which will see the Massey Shaw cross the English Channel next year along with other “Little Ships” that were part of Operation Dynamo to commemorate the anniversary. You can find out more about the Dunkirk Watch and purchase one at the William Wood Watches website.

When school friends Stanley and Peter boarded a cabin cruiser in 1940, little did they know they'd play a part in the Dunkirk evacuation It was the Second World War rescue mission that Winston Churchill called a ‘miracle of deliverance'. The port of Dunkirk was destroyed – its beaches the only escape route for nearly 340,000 retreating allied troops.  Shallow waters meant that big ships couldn't get close enough for a mass evacuation. Only the smallest of vessels could reach the shattered soldiers. Responding to a request by Britain's Ministry of Shipping, an armada of 700 little boats – including pleasure craft and private yachts – quickly formed. Among the volunteers were RNLI crews from Ramsgate and Margate. And, as chance would have it, aboard a cabin cruiser, 8-year-old Stanley Holtom and his friend, Peter. Our guest for this episode of the Warships Pod is Dr. Philip Weir, a much esteemed naval historian who specialises in the history of the Royal Navy in the first half of the 20th Century. His most recent book is ‘Dunkirk and the Little Ships'.  Discussing that famous event is the major topic during his chat with podcast host Iain Ballantyne. In looking at the ‘miracle of Dunkirk' of May and June 1940 - a story that still grips peoples' imaginations even more than 80 years later – Iain asks Phil if it is just another example of the British turning a military disaster into some kind of triumph? Or a bona fide victory in the face of impossible odds? Iain also asks if the role of the famed ‘little ships', in what was called Operation Dynamo, is misunderstood. What impact did they really have on the evacuation effort? And what exactly were ‘the Little Ships'? Also, has the Royal Navy's major contribution to (and sacrifice in) Operation Dynamo been overlooked? Among the other things Iain and Phil discuss is the greater role of the Royal Navy in that so-called ‘Spitfire summer' of 1940. Has the Royal Navy's major part, in deterring a cross-Channel invasion by the Germans while fighting the U-boats in the Atlantic, been unjustly consigned to the shadows of our collective memory? The career of the remarkable Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay - the man who commanded Operation Dynamo - is also discussed. Aside from also chatting about notable movie depictions of the Dunkirk evacuation Iain asks Phil if he was given the chance to save and preserve any warship from the past, which vessel would it be and why? The answer may be a surprise… •For more details on Phil Weir's book about the heroic Dunkirk evacuation https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/dunkirk-and-the-little-ships-9781784423759/ Follow him on Twitter @navalhistorian • Iain Ballantyne is the Editor of WARSHIPS International Fleet Review magazine. In May 1940, over 800 private little ships were sent to war as part of Operation Dynamo. Their mission was to evacuate British and French troops from Dunkirk. Some of those ships taking part in the evacuation were from the Essex coast. The six from Leigh-on-Sea; Renown, Reliant, Leticia, Resolute, Defender and Endeavour were volunteered for service by their crews who sailed them rather than being requisitioned by the Royal Navy. In total 338,000 troops were rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk, however some 250 little boats were lost and never returned. One of the Leigh little ships that did return to Essex was Endeavour. On the 26th of May 1940, the Royal Navy launched Operation Dynamo. Headquartered in the tunnels running under Dover Castle, the aim of the operation was to evacuate the standard British Expeditionary Force from the beaches of Dunkirk in France. The British, French and Belgian forces had been locked in a protracted struggle against the advancing lines of German tanks and troops that made their way through the Netherlands and Luxembourg, cutting through wide swathes of territory and forcing the Allies into a hasty and confused retreat. On the 20th of May, the decision was made to order all British troops to Dunkirk from where they would be evacuated to safety. The operation went on to gain notoriety as the greatest military evacuation in history and was dubbed the Miracle of Dunkirk. Join us this week as we take a closer look at this fascinating story.

On this day in 1940, the British Expeditionary Force and other Allied troops were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk, to save them from the rapidly approaching German forces who had just launched their lightning invasion of northern Europe. It was one of the most challenging and significant amphibious operations and evacuations in history. The planners of Operation Dynamo first estimated that 45,000 men might be rescued; but between 26 May and 4 June 338,226 men were returned to England by a vast armada of disparate vessels including destroyers, minesweepers, fishing vessels and the famous fleet of 'Little Ships' - all privately owned and requisitioned for the rescue. Today Dr Sam Willis speaks with Dr Philip Weir, author of Dunkirk and the Little Ships. Philip Weir is a historian who specialises in the Royal Navy in the early twentieth century. He has written for the Navy Records Society, History Today and Time and has contributed to television and radio programmes, including the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are. Dunkirk. June 4, 1940 - Operation Dynamo, later to become known as ‘The Miracle of Dunkirk’: 336 000 French, British and other Allied troops are evacuated from where they are cornered on the beaches of Dunkirk to England by 850 small, private, boats. An operation so critical, after these troops had been trapped by a German pincer movement, that the failure of it may well have resulted in the Allies losing the war against Nazi Germany. In a recent conversation with Professor Jonathan Jansen, I was fortunate enough to spend some  time discussing the parallels between ‘the small ships of Dunkirk’ and independent education in South Africa. On this episode of Battles & Banter, Avery, Codie & Tony discuss one of the most dramatic events of the Second World War: the "Miracle at Dunkirk". Taking place between May 26-June 4, 1940, the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from the European mainland (codenamed Operation Dynamo) was one of the most successful military undertakings in world history. However, it came on grim tidings as France began to fall to Nazi Germany at the same time. By July 1940, Great Britain would stand alone against the Axis Powers. The guys discuss the significance of Dunkirk, while also comparing it to Christopher Nolan's 2017 film of the same name. Also, Tony possibly gets abducted by Harry Styles of One Direction, Codie sings a song that Jonathan Groff would either love or hate, and Avery effectively butchers various European accents with the help of IPAs. Enjoy!

Professor Robin Prior, University of Adelaide Professor of History / Fellow Australian Academy of the Humanities, joins Michael on the 80th Anniversary of the ‘Miracle of Dunkirk’.   The Dunkirk evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, was the evacuation of Allied soldiers during World War II from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, in the north of France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940.   The operation commenced after large numbers of Belgian, British, and French troops were cut off and surrounded by German troops during the six-week Battle of France.   In a speech to the House of Commons, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called this "a colossal military disaster", saying "the whole root and core and brain of the British Army" had been stranded at Dunkirk and seemed about to perish or be captured.   In his "we shall fight on the beaches" speech on 4 June, he hailed their rescue as a "miracle of deliverance".

Cameron Dixon answers the question of ‘how useful is the film Dunkirk (2017) to a historian studying the events of the evacuation of Dunkirk, also know as Operation Dynamo, of World War II.’ Dunkirk (2017) directed, written and produced by Christopher Nolan is a war film depicting the events of the Dunkirk Evacuation. Dunkirk portrays the evacuation through three perspectives: land, sea & air. It has little dialogue and is shot with IMAX. The story of Dunkirk was a changing point in the European theatre of war in World War II. Has Nolan made the depicted events historically accurate? Find out today on History Verified.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As Hitler’s forces advanced rapidly through Western Europe after the end of the so-called ‘Phoney War’ which began in 1939, they pushed Allied troops ever closer towards the coast. The British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F.), alongside allied troops from France, faced the threat of encirclement and destruction at Dunkirk – a coastal town in northern France, 10 kilometres from the Belgian border. This was very early in World War Two and only weeks after the Wehrmacht had turned its attention to the countries of Western Europe. Consequently, the British government had to act quickly to avoid a debilitating, not to mention humiliating, defeat in 1940. This they did with Operation Dynamo – the plan to evacuate Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk, and return them to Britain. Almost 340,000 troops were successfully evacuated during the months of May and June 1940, yet there is still much debate about whether this evacuation represented a defeat so early in the war, or a triumph – allowing Britain to ‘fight another day’. In this episode, Elliott (@thelibrarian6) argues that Dunkirk was a military defeat for the British, while Patrick (@historychappy) argues that it was actually a very lucky escape for the British.
