In this episode of "The Women in Telemark Skiing" series I talk with my dear friend and ski mentor Holly Blefgen. Holly is Telemark royalty here in Canada, much the same way as Dickie Hall, Craig Dostie, and Kare Andersen are in America. Holly shares stories about her early life in skiing, what it what like skiing the 100-200 foot hills in and around Toronto in the late 60s and progressing to owning a sponsored mobile Telemark ski school starting way back in 1984 to where she is now personally and professionally. NAZI scientists relied on heavy water to produce the right uranium isotope for an atomic weapon. They produced most of their heavy water at a hydroelectric in occupied Norway called Vemork. In February 1943, a small group of Norwegian commandos slipped into Vemork, blew it up, and made their escape. This is after months of reconnaissance and preparation in the frozen wilderness. Neal Bascomb tells the story in “The Winter Fortress.”

On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson talks to three local experts about how to make the most of a winter trip to Lake Tahoe. First up, Johnson learns the ins and outs of skiing South Lake Tahoe with Robin Barnes, director of skier services at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Barnes shares what initially drew her to alpine skiing and why teaching the sport is so rewarding. “Some people maybe don't grow up playing sports and then you put them on a pair of skis and they realize they're actually quite talented,” she says. Barnes then offers a beginner's guide to skiing, sharing tips on where to rent equipment, the benefits of taking lessons, and the joys of hitting the slopes for the first time. She also name-checks some of her favorite expert runs at Heavenly. Next, Johnson explores more snow sports options with Aaron Pearlman, manager of the Northstar Cross-Country, Telemark, and Snowshoe Center in North Lake Tahoe. Pearlman gives an overview of Nordic sports and how visitors can enjoy them. “You just attach these snowshoes onto your boots, go out into the forest, and stroll around through fresh snowfall,” he says, “It's just the most amazing and quiet experience.” Lastly, Johnson talks with seasoned travel writer and 20-year Tahoe resident Ann Marie Brown. Brown discusses her favorite off-mountain activities for anyone looking to enjoy Tahoe's winter without strapping on skis. “People are so surprised that you can go out on a boat on Lake Tahoe in the wintertime and have a great time, be cozy, warm, and see amazing scenery,” Brown says. She also highlights some don't-miss restaurants, breweries, and spas in the area.

This movie stars Kirk Douglas, Richard Harris, Ulla Jacobson, and Michael Redgrave. Plus, many supporting actors in this movie have appeared in other spy movies. We call some of those out for you THE HEROES OF TELEMARK is a dramatization of some real operations from World War II. These operations were: Operation Grouse Operation Freshman Operation Gunnerside And the sinking of the Norwegian ferry Hydro. These operations all focused on the Allies' attempts at keeping the Germans from getting “Heavy Water”. Heavy Water was used in the process of creating an atomic bomb. The Allies had to stop or slow down the Germans so that the Allies could create the bomb first. We decode this movie against the backdrop of the real missions, while diving into what “Heavy Water” is and where it comes from. Tell us what you think Have you been involved in atomic bomb development? If so, we'd love to hear your thoughts on the accuracy of this movie's scientific information. Have you watched THE HEROES OF TELEMARK? What did you think? Was the romance a negative for your enjoyment of the movie? So take a listen to hear what we think of THE HEROES OF TELEMARK.
