Will, David, Jeremiah and Jon discuss more bands coming to Austin for SXSW 2025.
Brisbane indie punk outfit Semantics have splashed their name across the national music scene in the space of seven short years, traversing the country with acts such as Luca Brasi, Violent Soho, Sly Withers and The Menzingers while managing to drop their debut LP Paint Me Blue in the midst of it all, garnering a loyal and passionate global fanbase to boot.To prove they are no flash in the pan, Semantics recently unleashed their sophomore album I Feel It All At Once, producing their most cohesive and definitive work to date. Across its eleven tracks, I Feel It All At Once encapsulates a broad emotional spectrum; snapshots of life's experiences, journeying themes of grief, love, yearning and ultimately, acceptance. Semantics are a band who have proven in the past that they are unafraid to explore darker themes and subject matter, but even then, they displayed a talent for doing it in a way that felt healthy and cathartic.Vocalist/guitarist Callum joined HEAVY to go more in depth."I'm so excited," he enthused a couple of days out from the album's September 27 release date. "We've been sitting on these songs for a few months now and waiting to put them out and see what everyone thinks. (Musically) we were aiming to encapsulate everything we love about rock and guitar music. We wanted to pay tribute to all of their styles and artists that have influenced us and play from the heart and make songs that we believe in. Write about content and subject matter that is important to us or relevant to our lives, but is also - we hope - translatable and accessible to everyone else."In the full interview, Callum explained how the album represents a new chapter for the band, with a greater focus on production and songwriting effort, and is a tribute to the styles and artists that have influenced them. We discussed Semantics' upcoming album tour, which will start on the Gold Coast on October 13 and end in Brisbane on November 6, with Callum describing their live shows as loud and energetic, with a positive atmosphere. We also spoke about the album title and how it differs to their first release, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
We had the pleasure of interviewing RedHook over Zoom video!RedHook are a fiercely independent, shapeshifting alt-rock foursome from Sydney, Australia who've quickly accumulated a global fanbase and tens of millions of streams through their powerful songwriting and captivating live show.Featuring the core creative duo of Emmy Mack and Craig Wilkinson, two strangers from regional New South Wales whose paths collided after moving to Sydney in 2017, RedHook combine with young gun drummer Alex Powys and seasoned bassist Ned Jankovic to create heartfelt, attitude-filled and relatable alternative rock music that consistently defies classification. The strength of their debut single ‘Minute On Fire' in 2018 was enough to attract the interest of one of the lead promoters of the UK's iconic Download Festival, who swiftly invited RedHook over to play. The band were then snapped up by The Hen House Artist Management (worldwide) and inked booking deals with New World Artists (AUS) and Wasserman (UK/EU), going on to conquer some of Australia's biggest music festival stages (Download, Good Things, Stonefest, BIGSOUND). They also completed their debut international tour (supporting metal titans Three Days Grace across the UK & Europe), launched their own gender diversity-inspired alternative festival in Sydney, 'UsFest', and undertook four complete Australian tours (selling out the Melbourne and Sydney legs of their own debut headline tour). As RedHook's global fan base grew steadily with each single release and live show, many big things followed. The band were named triple j Unearthed feature artist, Kerrang! Radio feature artist and were invited to host the ABC's iconic rage program. They've consistently featured as one of the top 50 most-played artists on triple j Unearthed every year since 2019.2021 saw RedHook release their long-awaited debut EP ‘Bad Decisions' which has ticked over 13 million Spotify streams and had its two lead singles added to rotation on triple j. The record earned praise from Kerrang! (UK), Rock Sound (UK), Rolling Stone (AUS) and many more, even scooping a 2022 AIR Independent Music Awards nomination for best punk EP or album.RedHook continued their steady rise across 2022 with their debut performances at Australia's UNIFY Gathering, Groovin' The Moo and boutique festival Rolling Sets, as well as playing one of the world's most iconic rock festivals Rock AM Ring/Rock im Park in Germany alongside the likes of Green Day and Muse, accompanied by a second tour of Europe supporting The Faim.Their own headline ‘Bring Ya Mates' tour was also a huge success with multiple sold out shows around Australia as it emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. This was followed by a mammoth 28-date, two-month-long regional Australian tour as main support for metalcore titans In Hearts Wake and a triumphant return the Good Things festival stage alongside Bring Me The Horizon and Deftones, where RedHook made history as the first band to grace the lineup twice. In May 2022, RedHook returned with ‘Jabberwocky' their most gut-wrenching single to date, which was immediately added to triple j high rotation and added to the cover of Spotify's popular ‘All New Rock' Playlist. Follow-up singles ‘SAY' and ‘Soju' Ft. Sly Withers have both since been added to full rotation on triple j.RedHook recently released their long-anticipated debut album, Postcard From A Living Hell!We want to hear from you! Interview by Kris PetersSince forming in High School in Scranton back in 2005, Pennsylvania rock outfit Tigers Jaw have ridden a steady trajectory through the ranks, culminating in the success of their most recent album, 2021s I Won't Care How You Remember Me.Brought up and fed on a diet of local DIY punk outfits, Tigers Jaw have gone through a number of line-up changes, with Ben Walsh being the only surviving original member, having played every instrument from drums to bass to guitar to singing with the band. Now, with a settled line-up and growing reputation, Tigers Jaw are set to land in Australia in the coming weeks for a supporting slot to Sly Withers on his upcoming Australian tour.Walsh sat down with HEAVY to discuss the details."There's lots to do to get ready for an international tour," he began. "I feel like mentally I'm almost there, and I'm just figuring out what to bring, because here right now it's very hot. We get there in Winter for this tour so I have to figure out what to pack (laughs)."Touring and playing is one thing, but a trip so far away from home is also a mentally draining commitment, so we press Walsh on how he prepares for that side of things."Early on in touring we were 18,19,20 years old and it was a lot easier to just pick up and leave and not really worry about it too much," he smiled. "As we get into our 30s there's more stability at home and it's a little bit tougher to make sure everything's in order. The mental preparation is a little more intense as we get older. There's just as much excitement, but there's just more responsibilities to get in order before we take off."In the full interview, Ben tells us what to expect from Tigers Jaw's shows, the two acoustic performances and how they will approach them, the history of Tigers Jaw and what the early days were like, when the band decided to get serious, how the DIY punk scene helped shape their future, how his vision for Tiger's Jaw has changed over the years, new material and more.

The dudes from Sly Withers are on a heck of a run. After getting together at high school and making pennies busking by the beach, they've taken their brand of pop punk national. Album number two (Gardens) has been out for a few months, with punters and critics alike frothin' at the sounds and stories laid down. Since then, there's been national tours, live performances on Triple J and a heap of fun. We have a chat with guitar-wielding frontmen Jono and Sam about the new album, covering Coldplay on the J's and how to take your high school band to the next level.

Lonely and dreaming on the west coast, Jono Mata and Sam Blitvitch both aspired to be the guitar heroes they saw on their screens at an impressionable age. With Sly Withers - both men's first in-earnest band - they were able to achieve something far greater. With their open, honest every-man take on pub rock and pop-punk, the band quickly carved a niche that soon became bigger than either could have anticipated. With the release of their second studio album Gardens, the band find themselves among the top of the food chain in Australian rock - which is quite the feat for a band that was barely out of high school when it started. Reflecting on their story over a drink on the patio of a Newtown Airbnb, Mata and Blitvich connect the dots to explain how a fledgling guitar band ended up on the national airwaves and touring the country with Amy Shark. Gardens is out now via Dew Process. Special thanks to Amy Simmons, Deathproof PR, Nathan Wood, Dew Process and Skinny O'Leary. Produced and edited by Paul McWhirter. We had the pleasure of interviewing Waxflower over Zoom video! Fresh from releasing a trio of standout singles that saw them conquer their debut headline shows in February 2020, including a sold-out hometown performance, Waxflower returned in June with their hard-hitting single, ‘Sixteen Floors'. Released alongside the announcement of their signing to independent European label Rude Records (Saves The Day, Gideon, Blood Youth, Sleep On It), ‘Sixteen Floors' clocked up support from international heavyweights Kerrang! and Rock Sound, as well as being named the ‘Next Big Thing' by HMV.In September, Waxflower followed up with a powerfully poignant stripped back single, ‘Getting Better', which saw their success grow both domestically and across the globe. To close out the year, the band returned with ‘Again', a taste of a new era for the Brisbane pop punk four-piece which received both domestic and international support from the likes of Happy Mag, Hysteria, triple j Unearthed, triple j, Kerrang!, and Rock Sound.Waxflower have been growing an impressive resume of supports for such a young band, having shared the stage with the likes of Between You & Me, Stand Atlantic, Sly Withers & more as well as supporting US giants Simple Plan and The Dangerous Summer.Taking reference from 2000's legends Kisschasy & Jimmy Eat World, Waxflower merge nostalgia with progressive melodies and catchy hooks to bring a genuine and unique perspective on alternative rock.We want to hear from you! Sly Withers performs 'Clarkson' before covering Coldplay's 'The Scientist' for Like A Version
Perth rock outfit Sly Withers are a band who have been steadily building towards an ultimate goal that at times may have seemed untenable. The glories that come with rock and roll excess are often weighed down by the pitfalls, with one step forwards and three backwards more a life mantra than an age-old saying. With the release of their single “Cracks” last year, and in particular the opening words “Can’t write an opening line to save my life”, Sly Withers found that elusive spark needed to fast-track their musical existence and thus a potential star on the rise was born.On the tail end of a predominantly sold-out Australian tour co-vocalists and guitarists Jono Mata and Sam Blitvich joined HEAVY for a chat about their upcoming album Gardens and their current tour.“Gardens is a collection of songs that we wrote over the past four or five years,” Blitvich offered. “It's a bit of a documentation of our 20's, just the experiences we had both personally and in the band. It's quite personal and we're really, really, really proud of it and excited. It should be cool."Although called Gardens, you won’t actually find a song by that name on the album, a situation which is easily explained by the boys."Gardens as a concept to us is a lot of...,” Blitvich began… “we're very close the four of us and a lot of us socialise with each other taking place having beers at each others houses out the back gardens at night. Those are the times when we share new music, we share new demos, we discuss mixes and plan band stuff. It's a time when a lot of...”"It's a big part of our overall production base as well when it comes to writing,” Mata chimed in. “Some of the earliest critiques of our songs happens then. So a lot of sharing and early ideas and talking about demos and what we can change and what we can do better. It's like having beers and talking about the final product."In the full interview, the pair discuss the single “Cracks” and how it changed public perception on Sly Withers, the songs on Gardens and its musical direction, the singles released so far, their current tour and how it sold out most venues and more.
