Video Version About the Podcast In this episode of State of Readiness, host Joseph Paris speaks with Alan Michaels, founder of the Industry Knowledge Graph, a strategic planning tool built on Michael Porter's competitive strategy framework. The discussion traces Alan's multi-decade journey to develop a globally comprehensive, highly granular industry taxonomy and its transformation into a usable, dynamic digital platform. Alan recalls the pivotal moment in 1986 when, while working in IT at Manufacturers Hanover Bank, he was introduced to Porter's Competitive Advantage. The structured, recipe-like nature of Porter's methodology resonated deeply with him, prompting a career pivot toward corporate strategy. Over time, Alan held various strategic roles, including at IBM and in insurance, but ultimately dedicated himself full-time to his ambitious goal: to map the entire global economy by industry, using Porter's definitions of competitive structure and market forces. The result, launched in April 2024, is the Industry Knowledge Graph, a platform that classifies the global economy into over 24,000 distinct industries, based on competitive commonalities such as products, buyers, substitutes, and vendors. This granularity far exceeds traditional classifications like NAICS codes. For instance, while NAICS might group all jet aircraft in one industry, Alan's system separates fighter jets, commercial jets, and blimps into unique segments. Even within food, categories like potato chips, pretzels, and popcorn are treated as different industries based on buyer behavior and competitive factors. The platform supports top-down and bottom-up analysis. A user can examine which industries a company like PepsiCo operates in (156 in total), or conversely, explore a given industry like potato chips and see the top competitors, value chains, channels, and influencing trends. Users can also compare companies by overlapping and unique industry participation—offering a precise view ideal for M&A analysis, competitive benchmarking, strategic expansion, or private equity targeting. Alan emphasizes that his system empowers corporate planners, marketers, and strategists to cut research time dramatically. What previously took months—such as comparing competitors by line of business—can now be done in seconds. A standardized set of industry data fields, inspired by Porter's methodology, makes this possible. Each industry entry includes value chains, buyer segments, substitute threats, supplier dependencies, market trends, and more. To bring this vision to life digitally, Alan partnered with Semantic Arts, a leader in semantic technology and the data-centric revolution. Together, they formed Industry Knowledge Graph LLC, combining Alan's industry content with a modern knowledge graph platform. The system launched with an initial demo and subscription access, and plans are underway to expand its data, integrate public classification codes (e.g., NAICS, UN), and invite partnerships to enrich its content. Alan concludes by emphasizing that the Industry Knowledge Graph offers a strategic lens to view the economy—one grounded in Porter's logic, built with real-world granularity, and powerful enough to revolutionize strategic planning across industries. About Alan Michaels As the Director of Industry Research at Industry Knowledge Graph LLC, I am solely focused on enhancing our industry model of the global economy, which leverages the IBB model of the global economy (covering 25,000 industries) developed by Industry Building Blocks LLC. For the past 24 years, I have been building and maintaining the best available industry segmentation of the global economy by line of business, using Michael E. Porter's five forces industry analysis methodology. My business expertise is in corporate planning, business unit planning, industry analysis, new business development, and aligning and coordinating business and IT and other activities to make the whole greater than the sum of the parts. In 1994, I self-published (a Porter-inspired step-by-step corporate planning workbook) "Structured Strategic Planning" while teaching at Pace University Graduate School. In short, since reading Porter's book "Competitive Advantage" in 1986 I have been passionate about leveraging his five-forces industry framework to provide high-quality, granular, and comprehensive industry data to raise the level of strategic thinking. We examine the difference between helpful and unhelpful ways of talking about panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, and anxiety symptoms. We discuss why saying "it feels like I'm dying" versus "I'm experiencing intense physical sensations" can dramatically impact your recovery journey. We challenge common phrases like "sit with it," "just ignore it," and "regulate yourself," offering more accurate and useful alternatives. We also address the importance of changing how others around you talk about your anxiety, and we introduce a memorable analogy: treating your anxiety disorder like an ex you're pretending to ignore at a party - acknowledging it's there without giving it center stage. This episode features inspiring "Did it Anyway" stories from listeners who did what they didn't think they were cable of doing, along with the usual dose of humor. We conclude with practical advice for responding to tinnitus-related anxiety, emphasizing how attention and resistance amplify symptoms, while acceptance allows the brain's natural filtering system to work.Timestamps:08:30 - Why "it feels like" is the most problematic phrase in anxiety recovery16:45 - The difference between "soul-crushing panic attack" and "intense adrenaline rush"23:45 - How compulsive commentary differs from detached awareness28:15 - Why saying "just sit with it" can be misleading32:20 - The "anxiety as your ex" analogy that will change how you think about ignoring symptoms37:15 - Inspiring "Did it Anyway" story about grandparent anxiety recovery38:45 - Comprehensive tinnitus and anxiety management advice

Have you ever wondered what the Baptism of the Holy Spirit truly means? Join us as we journey through the Bible to bring clarity to this powerful Christian doctrine, exploring its Old Testament roots and New Testament fulfillment. In this episode, we unravel the biblical texts that define the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, from Acts of the Apostles to Paul's epistles. We'll tackle the nuances of indwelling vs. empowerment, the significance of Pentecost, and the Old Testament prophecies that foretold the New Covenant outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We'll examine:✅ The core debate: Is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit a subsequent or simultaneous experience with conversion? ✅ The classical Pentecostal position and their key proof texts from Acts, including the role of tongues and spiritual gifts. ✅ The prophetic connection between baptism with fire and God's judgment or purification. ✅ A crucial dive into 1 Corinthians 12:13, clarifying the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as a salvific event that unites all believers into Christ's body. ✅ The historical context of Acts 2 and Acts 8 (Jews & Samaritans) versus Acts 10 (Gentiles) and why it matters for our understanding today. ✅ The significance of the Day of Pentecost and its powerful parallels with Old Testament events, inaugurating the New Covenant. ✅The crucial question: Is this just a semantic debate, or does it profoundly impact church unity, the gifts of the Spirit, and how we view fellow believers? Ep131: The semantics of CPR

Pomegranate Health

In this podcast we discuss low-value care that has emerged from a decay in the specificity of the terms “cardiac arrest” and “cardiopulmonary resuscitation.” Patients who experience cardiac arrest in hospital are rarely more than a minute or two away from defibrillation. But the proportion of shockable rhythms in these patients is low as the heart has typically stopped after the decline of other systems. In such conditions, chest compressions are more likely to cause unnecessary trauma than improve survival outcomes. As retired UK palliative care physician Kathryn Mannix explains, “cardiac arrest” was originally reserved for unexpected events in relatively healthy individuals in the community. She says we need to separate this from the more progressive phenomenon that is better described as “natural dying”. There is also a semantic breakdown in the understanding of what “cardiopulmonary resuscitation” entails. Surveys of Australasian medical practitioners show that the majority consider CPR to include defibrillation and drugs not just chest compressions and ventilation. As a result, Do Not Attempt CPR orders get perceived as being “a stop sign” to other treatments that may be beneficial. We hear from the NZ-based authors of that research, cardiologist Dr Tammy Pegg, intensivist Dr Alex Psirides and palliative care physician Dr Kate Grundy. Chapters4:00 CPR for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest8:43 Overuse of CPR in hospitalised patients 20:08 Crude algorithms and failed conversations 40:17 Semantic confusion around what CPR entails 48:13 The midwifing of natural dyingGuestsDr Kathryn Mannix (www.kathrynmannix.com) Dr Tammy Pegg MRCP FRACP FC CANZ DPhil (Nelson Marlborough Hospital cardiology department) Dr Alex Psirides FCICM (Wellington Regional Hospital intensive care unit) Dr Kate Grundy FAChPM FRACP (Christchurch Hospital palliative care service; University of Otago)ProductionProduced by Mic Cavazzini DPhil. This is a beautiful conversation around how everything is made up, the traps of language, why we should think about teaching kids semantics. We also talk about how trauma therapy is a creative activity not a discovery. How important stories are to shape the world we live in and we end up talking about taxes why that would be a way to really shit the current state of the world. This conversation is wide ranging, concrete, provoking and really useful. Enjoy!

To Align with your Divine within is to Align with your humanity. Essence of our humanity is under attack- not by demons, aliens, or Artificial Intelligence  per se, but by self appointed self anointed global leaders who are hellbent on destroying our spirit of humanity. It was my experience as detailed in ACCESS DENIED For Reasons of National Security that these globalist perpeTraitors follow a linear DARPA generated plan. They believe all creation, our planet included, is flawed in its divine design, just as they believe our bodies need their 78+ vaccines to fix ‘genetic flaws'. These dark perpeTraitors feel justified in ‘saving' our planet from their belief the sun is destroying it. DARPA's conclusion inspires believers to play god by cross breeding genetically altered humanity with AI while also actively working to block our sun. The audacity of these power mongers is inconceivable! As my daughter Kelly observed, “Sun is the SOULar battery of all existence on earth.”We need sunlight for optimum mental health and for grounding into our true nature. Our nature is our humanity- who we are intended to be and how life is intended to be lived. To disrupt our essence of humanity, mind control is being used to block our ability to Align with our Divine within, which in turn inhibits access to soul expression, strength of spirit, and our innate energy source of infinite power of love. Without free thought, there is no free will soul expression. No ability to remember who we are and why we are here. No capacity for connecting with each other on energetic, loving levels of compassion, understanding, and unity. United we stand against these perpeTraitors of humanity who mask themselves as gods to lord over our existence.Equally as alarming as discussed by George Bush Sr. at Bohemian Grove in 1985 is that if their New World Order agenda fails, then those playing god will destroy our planet. Wouldn't blocking the sun do that anyway? Semantics aside, the end game of these dark negative energy force perpeTraitors is our demise. When we Align with our Divine within, we have wisdom. Wisdom is our saving grace to outthink criminal minds and AI's linear plan every time.  Preservation of free thought is key. Knowledge is our defense against their mind control.Traumatic fear is the basis of all mind control as puppetmasters manipulate humanity's brain defense mechanism against incomprehensible trauma to their advantage. It was found through Hitler/Himmler research that there is no trauma more horrific on the human mind than sexual abuse of a child prior to age 5 while the brain is still forming. Similarly satanic ritual abuse has the same effect of shutting down neuron pathways of conscious thought, leaving the subconscious wide open to being led, manipulated, and programmed to drive future thoughts. Many children, including myself, have experienced trauma beyond comprehension to render us compliant and malleable for controllers' vision of how life should be lived based on their own fears that the world is ending. Our humanity is under attack because our strength of spirit is perpeTraitors' greatest fear. Many children, me included, witnessed other children being sacrificed at their alter of justification. Many victims of traumatic mind control died, which is also in keeping with depopulation agenda to reduce humanity's numbers to a much more manageable size. Abusers have no remorse in their justifications. Yet children who witness and experience the demise of others are left with the same traumatic dilemma that most military veterans experience:Why did I survive when others didn't?Read the full article on Cathy's website Here!

It's Chris' third time on the show -- check out the earlier episodes, both are among the top ten all-time downloads. My guest today is Chris Mayer, he is a professional investor, best-selling author, expert on general semantics and more. He is a portfolio manager and co-founder of Woodlock House Family Capital, and the author of 100 bagger, How do you know, Dear Fellow Time Binder, World Right Side Up, and Invest Like a Dealmaker. It's his third time on the show — consider listening to the previous two episodes before or along with this. It's always such a joy to speak with Chris, and this episode is no different. Enjoy! Summary In this conversation, Chris Mayer discusses the nuances of investing, emphasizing the importance of clear communication with investors, the long-term perspective of family wealth, and the evolution of investment research. He highlights the significance of patience in compounding, the role of catalysts in stock performance, and the need to embrace uncertainty. Chris also contrasts dynamic and static value investing, explores the impact of passive investing on market dynamics, and reflects on how general semantics has influenced his investment thinking. In this conversation, Chris and Bogumil explore the themes of lifelong learning, the importance of humility in understanding knowledge, and the principles of investing that should be passed down to future generations. They discuss the mindset of an immortal investor, the impact of news on market perceptions, and the significance of quality over startup risks in investment strategies. The conversation also delves into cultivating patience in an impatient world, the nature of success and failure, and the subjective understanding of quality in business. Elsie the cat has a set of 120 buttons programmed with words. She uses them to lie, swear, apologise, express grief and frustration and love to her human, the author Mary Robinette Kowal, who talks about what's involved in learning to communicate via language buttons with companion animals. And animal behaviour expert Zazie Todd explains how animals might be interacting with human language.  This is the first half of a two-parter: in the next episode, some talking dogs - and their humans - come to visit, and we hear about the kinds of things you find out about what your animal friend is really thinking, and how it changes the ways you communicate with other humans too. Scaffolding syntax and semantics for non-readers and redefining life skills

Syntactic use is considered an “academic” skill that's useful for reading comprehension and writing, but the impact of sentence comprehension goes way beyond school. Our ability to comprehend messages at the word and sentence level in oral and written language has a huge impact on our ability to function. So when clinicians ask me, “Should I focus on syntax, or should I focus on life skills?”, my response is that syntax IS a life skill. The same is true about semantic knowledge because of the significant impact background knowledge has in our ability to navigate in functional situations.Yet scaffolding for students who are not yet able to read and write can be challenging; which is why I wanted to share two questions on this topic from a session done with my Language Therapy Advance Foundation's members' group. In this session, I share:✅Examples of complex syntax that may occur during functional tasks, like signing up for medical appointments, applying for a job, or grocery shopping.✅Why effective vocabulary instruction in content areas, such as science and social studies, is essential for positive life outcomes.✅Scaffolding syntactic study for nonreaders or emergent readers.✅Does it make sense to do semantic feature analysis with a student who has an intellectual disability?✅Following directions, topic maintenance, and self-advocacy: What language skills do we need to meet these type of goals, and should even we be writing IEP goals for these skills? In this episode, I mentioned the following episodes of De Facto Leaders:EP 102: The science of reading: A team approach (with Brett Stevens) Link here: https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-102-the-science-of-reading-a-team-approach-with-brett-stevens/EP 180: The relationship of language and literacy and involvement with the justice system (with Dr. Shameka Stewart) Link here: https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-180-the-relationship-of-literacy-and-language-skills-and-involvement-with-the-justice-system-with-dr-shameka-stewart/EP 181: Developmental language disorder: Impacts on literacy and life outcomes beyond school (with Dr. Karla McGregor) Link here: https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-181-developmental-language-disorder-impacts-on-literacy-and-life-beyond-school-with-dr-karla-mcgregor/In this episode I mention Language Therapy Advance Foundations, my program that helps SLPs create a system for language therapy. You can learn more about Language Therapy Advance Foundations here: https://drkarenspeech.com/languagetherapy/If you're already a member of either program and you refer a friend, tell them to email me at talktome@drkarenspeech.com if they join and let me know you referred them and I'll send you a $100 referral bonus.  We're thrilled to be sponsored by IXL. IXL's comprehensive teaching and learning platform for math, language arts, science, and social studies is accelerating achievement in 95 of the top 100 U.S. school districts.
