Gustavo's love for wine runs deep into his childhood. He grew up in California's Central Valley, surrounded by family with longstanding ties to agricultural business who instilled in him a love of the land and an appreciation for wine. He spent his summers in orchards, vineyards, cotton fields, tomato fields and canneries, but he never intended to be a farmer, much less a winemaker. His dreams were filled with airplanes and rockets and cars. But one day he found a bottle from Robert Mondavi Winery that his father had put away. After reading the mission statement on the back label, his trajectory changed and led to 17 years at Mondavi, where he earned the title of head red winemaker. In 2009, Gustavo established Mira as one of the top producers of small production, single-vineyard wines in Napa Valley—including fruit from premier vineyard sites such as Hyde Vineyard in Carneros and Schweizer Vineyard in the heart of the Stags Leap District. On this episode of The Black Wine Guy Experience, host MJ Towler sits down with special guest Elizabeth Vianna to discuss the Stags Leap District in Napa Valley. Elizabeth highlights the unique geographical features of the area, which contribute to the district's exceptional wines. The episode also touches on personal experiences, such as feeling like an outsider during high school and finding solace in music and books. Elizabeth emphasizes the importance of finding a sense of belonging, which she finally found at Vassar College. The conversation turns to the Napa Wine Company, which is home to several prominent winemakers. It became a learning experience for Elizabeth as she started as a lab director and later became the assistant winemaker, describing it as their "second University of Winemaking."Elizabeth also talks about her connection with fellow winemaker Heidi Barrett, describing her as gracious, calm, and Zen, unlike other "amazing women" in the industry who are forces of nature. Heidi, one of the first great consulting winemakers, chose this path to have control over her time while raising her daughters. The episode delves into Elizabeth's background, from doing research in developmental neurobiology to working in a toxicology lab monitoring drugs of abuse. It was in the toxicology lab that they discovered the similarities between the machines used in that field and the study of aroma compounds in wine. Elizabeth shares her experience as part of the Stags Leap Growers Association and the creative solution they found in 2020 when half of the producers were unable to make wine. This relaxed and casual approach allows for a unique and enjoyable conversation between MJ Towler and Elizabeth Vianna, making it a memorable episode of The Black Wine Guy Experience.A Massive THANK YOU to Elizabet Vianna!!!This episode's wine, 2020 Chimney Rock Elevage Blanc and 2018 Chimney Rock Tomahawk Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Stag's Leap DistrictTo learn more about Chimney Rock, click the link!Follow Elizabeth on IGFollow Chimney Rock on IGTo learn more about The Batonnage Forum click the link!____________________________________________________________Until next time, cheers to the mavericks, philosophers, deep thinkers, and wine drinkers! This is the third time I've interviewed winemaker Ted Henry - each time at a different winery. It's not that I'm a Ted groupie. As a matter of fact, I didn't plan to interview him when he moved to Groth Vineyard and Winery in 2021. But then I read four wines he produced when he was with Clos du Val winery won awards on an international stage...how could I pass up getting that story? Fortunately, we also cover much of what he's been doing since moving to Groth. Ted is now the Director of Winegrowing, in addition to being the winemaker. All they ask from Ted is to "continue to make beautiful, elegant wines of place — wines that excite people." Join me as I travel to Oakville, Napa Valley during this On The Wine Road Podcast. Chimney Rock Stags Leap District Elevage Red Blend In this episode, Rob, Scott, and Becky all review a classic Californian Bordeaux style blend in Elevage by Chimney Rock. Will the wine inspire the show to go out and acquire more of the Elevage, or will it inspire them to buy other similar Stags Leap District wines at 1/2 half the Elevage's $120 price tag? We shall see...on The Wine Vault.

(Previously aired July 2021) This is not an episode about Napa's “icon wines” or “icon wineries” whose labels, rarity, and high cost cause a frenzy among consumers resulting in exclusive waitlists for the privilege of purchasing a bottle. No, today we're talking about the “star” vineyards that, in some cases, have become brands in their own right. In Part One, we spoke with Andy Beckstoffer, the winegrower who turned Napa Valley's grower-winery relationship upside down. Today our illustrious guests include Paul Hobbs, Chris Tynan of Cliff Lede Vineyards, and Tom Hinde of Taub Family Selections to discuss what makes their vineyards so unique. Paul Hobbs is an esteemed international winemaking consultant with projects across the globe from Argentina to Armenia but his home base is at Napa Valley's Paul Hobbs winery whose fruit is sourced from the sub AVA's of St. Helena and Oakville. He works with Beckstoffer's fruit from the notable To Kalon, Las Piedras, and Dr. Crane vineyards. He'll open up about his long-time relationship with Beckstoffer Vineyards plus the Nathan Coombs Estate on the foot of the Vaca Mountain range known for its volcanic soils and cool climate. Taub Family Selections represents top sites in St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville, Mount Veeder, and Howell Mountain. Through a relationship with Andy Beckstoffer, the Taub family has access to the vineyards of Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III (Rutherford) and Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper (Oakville) producing Cabernet Sauvignons since 2012. Winemaker Tom Hinde was previously known for his work at Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, Hartford Family Winery, La Crema Winery, Lakoya, Cardinale, Stonestreet, and Verite. We'll tap into his experience at creating brands and a strong market perspective to give us insight into why these vineyards command such respect. We'll also be speaking with Christopher Tynan, winemaker of Cliff Lede Vineyards whose experience includes working with Helen Turley at Blankiet Estate in Yountville, as the assistant winemaker at Colgin Cellars where he worked closely with Vineyard Manager David Abreu. We discuss the famed Poetry Vineyard that is carved into a steep west-facing hillside, which reaches from the highest elevations of the Stags Leap District sub-appellation to the valley floor drawing its uniqueness from shallow, volcanic soils atop fractured shale planted by David Abreu with high vine density and proprietary clonal selection. Top up your glass with one of Napa's finest and join us as we hunt down some of Napa's most unique terroirs.

On this podcast I talk with two talented female winemakers as we celebrated International Women's Day, recorded March 6th. My first guest will be Danielle Cyrot who has held enviable positions in her career, the last 12 years of which have been at CADE Estate Winery on Howell Mountain. Danielle is working with two interesting projects, the details of which we'll cover. Colleen FitzGerald is the enologist and a winemaker at Pine Ridge VIneyards in the Stags Leap District. She's been handed an intereresting wine wine project which led to a sparkling brand that is their first added label in 25 years. Has it been a challenge for these women to work in such a male dominated field? You may be surprised by their answers. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

This week we sip it up with the amazing wine genius himself, Kevin Lemon, and hear from the debonair winemaker Ted Henry of Clos du Val. At Clos Du Val, our story is rich in history. John and Henrietta Goelet founded Clos Du Val in 1972. A descendant of Bordeaux's famed wine merchant, Barton & Guestier, John had a vision of producing Cabernet Sauvignon that would rival the world's best. French-trained winemaker Bernard Portet was selected to head the search for the perfect property from which to produce these wines. In 1972, two years and five continents later, a parcel in what would become the Stags Leap District in the Napa Valley was chosen to fulfill this lofty dream. Our inaugural wine, the 1972 Clos Du Val Cabernet Sauvignon, was part of the group that topped French wines in the legendary 1976 Judgment of Paris blind tasting. Ten years later, our Cabernet Sauvignon took first place in the Judgment of Paris rematch. While we are still incredibly focused on the growing and production of the world's finest wines, history has taught us that the value of what we do is in the connections that wine allows us to create. These connections, between our customers, our vineyards, our wines, our people, and our history create a richness of story and purpose that informs and defines the Clos Du Val experience. Winemaking Ted Henry - Winemaker & Mabel Ojeda - Assistant Winemaker Great wines embody the character and complexity of the vineyards they come from. They also reflect the artistry and experience of the people who make them. As only the fourth winemaker in the four-decade history of Clos Du Val, gifted winemaker Ted Henry brings 15 years of experience making impeccably balanced, estate-grown wines to Clos Du Val, with an emphasis on Bordeaux varieties. Mentored by such luminaries as famed wine sensory chemist Dr. Ann Noble and renowned winemaker Dimitri Tchelistcheff, Ted is guiding a vibrant and vineyard-driven stylistic shift at Clos Du Val towards greater ripeness, lovely mid-palate depth, and ideal tannin integration. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/support
Poetry Vineyard is a steep, southwest-facing, hillside vineyard that reaches from the highest elevation in the Stags Leap District down to the Silverado Trail. Made up of a combination of shallow, volcanic soils on top of fractured shale, this vineyard receives plenty of sunshine and is the source for the winery’s flagship Cabernet, Sauvignon, Poetry. The vineyards on the valley floor surrounding the tasting room and the winery are referred toas Twin Peaks Ranch. The soil is predominantly gravelly loam, and the vines are planted to red Bordeauxvarieties. This property forms the backbone of the Cliff Lede Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon. The state-of-the-art winery, designed by Howard Backen, combines time-tested techniques with innovative technology. It features a Pellenc optical sorting machine, which sorts grapes based upon quality settingsestablished by the winemaker. Following an additional hand-sort, a unique crane system gently gravity deliversthe berries to tanks for fermentation, allowing for minimal processing of the fruit. In addition, Ledecommissioned American tank manufacturer Mueller to recreate distinctive truncated tanks similar to those at Château Latour, tapered to allow for a higher skin-to-juice ratio, resulting in greater complexity and a deeper concentration of flavors in the wine.
In Episode 72 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of sitting down with Michael Baldacci, President and Winemaker of Baldacci Family Vineyards out of the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, CA. In this episode Michael shares the importance of family and how family has single-handedly been the number one thing that has propelled them to the level that they are today. Michael talks about his Black Lab Beau and how much Beau has influenced him over the years and he also shares how Baldacci was one of the original clients in Total Wine and More and just how much that relationship has meant to him over the years as well. Not only that but Michael's personality shines through in this episode and it doesn't take long for you to find yourself totally capivated in all the stories that he shares from his journey in the wine industry, to everything his family has done to get to where they are today. These are just a handful of the things you're going to love about this episode as Michael delivers in so many ways and provides an insurmountable amount of value to truly depict the kind of person and winemaker that he is. In Episode 54 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of sitting down with Michael Beaulac, Winemaker and General Manager of Pine Ridge Vineyards out of the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. In this episode Michael shares how he got started in the wine industry working for brands such as Murphy-Goode Winery, Markham Vineyards, and St. Supery before finally taking over as Winemaker and GM of Pine Ridge back in 2009. With that being said, Michael shares what it was like taking over for Stacy Clark, winemaker for Pine Ridge from 1983-2008 and how his style of winemaking and team have truly eximplified the Pine Ridge that we know today over the past decade. Considering everything mentioned, the one thing that I know you'll take away from this episide more than anything is just how passionate and convicted of a winemaker Michael Beaulac is. Not only that but Michael's personality shines through in this episode and it doesn't take long for you to find yourself totally capivated in all the stories that he shares from his journey in the wine industry, to how Pine Ridge crafts their wines each and every vintage. In today's episode of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast, I have the privilege of introducing to you Jason Lede, Sales Manager for Lede Family Wines and FEL Wines, both out of Napa Valley and Anderson Valley, CA. In this episode Jason shares so many great things that I know will leave an impression on you through his personal hard work and committment. I think the one thing though that you're going to take away from this podcast more than anything, is Jason's passion. Jason shares the story of how Lede Family Wines started back in 2002 when his father Cliff Lede set out on a mission to fulfill a life-long dream and start his own wine brand. Today the Lede Estate sits on 60 acres of breathtaking property overlooking the Stags Leap District. Jason talks briefly about Poetry Inn, a luxurious 5 room private villa with each room containing it's own private balcony, wood-burning fire place, and incredible valley views. Poetry Inn is the only private luxury hotel located in the Stags Leap District. Jason also talks about what inspired his father to create Poetry Inn and what makes it so special and unique. Jason talks about Lede Family Wines receiving both Napa Green Land and Napa Green Winery Certifications in 2015 and what that means, especially in a society today where it seems everyone is very conscious driven from what they wear, to what they eat and drink. Jason also talks about his family's love and passion for music and how music has been such an influence, not only in his families life but also on the family vineyards and winery as well. With that being said, Jason is an incredible DJ and spends a good amout of time spinning at the Estate for spcial events and even donates his time to charitable causes and spins at places where the proceeds for the event go directly to a deserving charity which says so much about how great of a dude Jason Lede is! Every day I drive by Shafer Vineyards (twice) and never fail to slow down in order peer into that special sloping set of vineyards within the Stags Leap District where the hillsides graduate from difficult-to-grow-grapes to upright cliffs. In 2018 Doug and his team at Shafer began producing “The Taste with Doug Shafer” podcast and that presented the opportunity for me to connect with him and explore this small part of Napa Valley. In preparing for this podcast I found and read Doug’s book, A Vineyard in Napa, which was published in 2012 and captures the first forty years of Shafer Vineyards’ History. Our conversation weaves through Doug’s experiences in making wine, running Shafer Vineyards, writing his book, hosting his podcast, and includes very helpful advice for winemakers on marketing trips. Ron Miller and his wife, Diane Disney Miller, daughter of Walt, opened the winery of Silverado vineyards in 1981. While her maiden name leads some to call Silverado "The Disney Winery" there is nothing Disney-esque about the gorgeous estate in the heart of the Stags Leap District. Since 1981 Only two people have led the winemaking team. Today that post is held by Jon Emmerich. Silverado's vineyards are located throughout Napa Valley, each providing a unique palate for Emmerich to work with. While the name Silverado Vineyards might be familiar it's actually not a very large winery, producing ,only about 75,000 cases per year. While this winery is neither new, nor historic, neither large nor small, make no mistake, there is nothing average about the wines Emmerich and his team are making in the heart of Napa Valley.

This is the second time I've had the chance to interview Ted and each time it's been an enjoyable experience. Now he's the head winemaker at the historic Clos Du Val winery in Napa's iconic Stags Leap District. Clos Du Val has recently made some dramatic changes to their wine making philosophy. The timing couldn't have been better to get Ted's thoughts on the changes you'll be seeing and tasting in the near future. My family happened to be visiting Napa Valley that week from Phoenix and not only were they surprised by getting to attend the interview they also received the wine tasting from Ted. It's not often a tasting is provide by the winemaker. As I say, he's a gracious guy.
