On today's episode of American Beer Review LIVE!, Chad struggles with how to describe non-IPA beers. Starting off 2024, the crew digs into Brian's Too Many Hops Theory, running down some experiments ran over the holiday season. We crack our first pod-beer of the year, The Ale Apothecary's Little Star Saison, a shining example of the wonderful blending of flavors that wild/farmhouse style ales can achieve. We talk a bit about the Bend, Oregon beer scene, and the various road trip techniques each of us employ. Second up, we enter Vahalla (metaphorically) extra warm thanks to Viking Funeral (Chocolate Chipotle 2023), from Four Fathers Brewing. Still warm from the chipotle, we talk about the closing of a local favorite, Odd Otter Brewing. 188. Bryn Nelson with Sally James - Unlocking the Secrets — and the Science — of Poop

Town Hall Seattle Science Series

We all do it, but we hardly ever talk about it. After all, human feces isn't exactly a popular topic of discussion. We'd simply like to flush it and forget about it. Researchers, however, want to change all that. That's because our body's natural byproduct may be the key to solving some of today's biggest problems. Local, award-winning journalist and microbiologist Bryn Nelson, Ph.D., is determined to shift our mentality around poop. In his book, Flush, Nelson shares how human waste holds potent medicine, sustainable power, and even natural fertilizer to restore the world's depleted lands. New science shows that within this lowly, underused resource lies effective ways of measuring and improving human health, identifying early warnings of community outbreaks like COVID-19, and reversing environmental harm. It turns out that poop is very much worthy of conversation; Nelson even argues that it could be the world's most squandered natural resource. But unlocking poop's enormous potential (poo-tential?) will require us to overcome our shame and disgust, embracing our roles as the producers and potential architects of a more circular economy. Could our lowly byproducts become our salvation? A dose of medicine, a glass of water, a gallon of rocket fuel, an acre of soil: sometimes hope arrives in surprising packages. Bonus! In a pop-up science fair of sorts, nine local organizations will join us in The Forum to share more about biosolids, wastewater treatment, and everything you ever wanted to know about what happens after you flush. Joining us will be Sally Brown with the University of Washington, King County's LOOP program, NW Biosolids, the Water Environmental Federation, the Institute for Systems Biology, the Bullitt Center, Stoup Brewing, RAIN Incubator, and The Nature Conservancy/Ocean Sewage Alliance. Bryn Nelson, Ph.D., is an award-winning science writer and former microbiologist who decided he'd much rather write about microbes than experiment on them. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, he shifted course and completed a graduate program in science writing at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Since then, he has accumulated more than two decades of journalism experience, including seven years at the Newsday science desk where he covered genetics, stem cell research, evolution, ecology, and conservation. Nelson has written for dozens of other outlets, from The New York Times, NBCNews.com, and The Daily Beast to Nature, Mosaic, and Science News for Students Sally James is a writer and journalist who covers science and medical research. She has written for The Seattle Times, South Seattle Emerald, Seattle and UW Magazines, among others. For the Emerald, she has been focusing during the pandemic on stories about health and access for communities of color. In the past, she has been a leader and volunteer for the nonprofit Northwest Science Writers Association. For many years, she was a reviewer for Health News Review, fact-checking national press reporting for accuracy and fairness. She is most pithy on Twitter @jamesian. Yikes! That was a bit of a hiatus. I probably coulda started episode up last week or maybe even one week before, but nothing could be done. Thanks to a non-cicerone related bike accident, I broke my collar bone. It set my schedule back a bit, but it was kinda nice to just relax for a while. Thankfully for me, I have plenty of episodes recorded and waiting to hit the editing room. Stoup is the first of those! So to all those waiting patiently, here we go!Stoup is a fantastic brewery in Ballard, in the region of Lucky Envelope, Populux, and Reuben’s. Known for nailing a wide variety of styles including their German styles especially, they hit the ground running in 2013. The three founders, Robin, Brad, and Lara (who I spoke with today) came to the table with a good assortment of experience and skills and were relatively early to the scene, a hand of cards that has served them well as their brewery continues to grow rapidly. Beer has played a pivotal role throughout history—from influencing ancient Mesopotamian agriculture to bankrolling Britain’s imperialist conquests. Food and tech journalist Devin Briski chronicled the fascinating history of the world’s (arguably) most popular beverage in her book Beeronomics: How Beer Explains the World. Briski was joined onstage by Robyn Schumacher, Washington State’s first female cicerone (the beer equivalent of a sommelier). Together the two take us on a history of the world though beer, tracking the resurgence of ancient brewing techniques and the recent rise of the craft beer movement in America and Europe—up through the revolution of small independent craft breweries. Join Briski and Schumacher's discussion on how beer has shaped the course of history—and for a new appreciation for the brands and styles of beer on shelves at your local supermarket or on tap at the nearby pub. Devin Briski is a print and audio journalist. She serves as content marketing manager for the events team at Vox Media, which produces Code Conference and Vox Conversations. Devin began her career in Silicon Valley, where she worked on the publishing and marketing team of Stanford Social Innovation Review and co-founded online magazine The Ventured Life. Robyn Schumacher is a brewer and co-founder of Stoup Brewing—and is Washington State’s first female cicerone. Previously Robyn has experience as a high school biology teacher before the allure of brewing called her to attend the Master Brewers Association conference, manage the brewing program at a local Seattle eatery, and passed the Cicerone Certification Exam in 2012.
