Today, I have a special New Year's episode to ring in 2024. I've invited Neil McRobert, of the Talking Scared Podcast, which is a wonderful show and I encourage you all to listen if you haven't already. I also have Rachel Harrison on today, author of some of my all time favorite books, like CACKLE and SUCH SHARP TEETH. She has a new book due out later in 2024, that's like Thelma and Louise with vampires, called SO THIRSTY, which I know I'm definitely looking forward to. Please know that this list is just a jumping off point for all three of us. There were so many books to look forward to in 2024, and we couldn't discuss all of them, but we hope this gets you excited about some things to come. I'll try to make sure these are available for preorder in my online bookshop if you want to support both the podcast as well as independent bookstores nationwide. Horror Recs! is all Maria Teresa wrote in her request, but our booksellers were incredibly excited to explore this relatively new category they are now using to shelve books in their stores. And wow, did they come up with some fun books for Episode 37, after having a broad discussion about what makes a book a horror novel, and what sort of sub-genres are included (sporers, body horror). Some titles included in this are: Such Sharp Teeth, Mexican Gothic, Devolution, and Carmilla. We hope you get a thrill from this episode.Shelf Help is a collaboration between the Book Jam, a nonprofit designed to inspire readers; CATV Upper Valley media community (NOW LOCATED AT JAM, Junction Arts & Media); three Upper Valley bookstores: Yankee Bookshop in Woodstock, VT; the Norwich Bookstore in Norwich, VT; and Still North Books & Bar in Hanover, NH.

Rachel Harrison is back on the podcast talking about her latest novel, Such Sharp Teeth, her short story collection Bad Dolls, upcoming work, female werewolves, rage, body horror and The Twilight Zone Shownotes: https://booksinthefreezer.com
Today, I've invited author, Rachel Harrison, to talk about her book, “Such Sharp Teeth,” but I love all her work so we really chat about all of it. This is one of my most cherished conversations because we talk so honestly about how her work reflects the female experience. We dive deep into what that looks like through her stories, revealing the complexity behind her charm. I want to issue a content warning. We address assault and the emotional aftermath starting about 14 minutes in, so if you want to skip ahead 5 minutes, we get to other feminist topics as well as things that make us laugh. It's a conversation I really needed and I'm so glad I get to share it with you. You can order her books using my bookshop.org link to support the show, as well as independent bookstores nationwide. In my opinion, werewolves don't get enough attention in the horror genre. Vampires are a bit higher on the food chain as are traditional slashers, but when was the last time you could point to a good werewolf character in a horror novel? Well, the wait is over with Rachel Harrison's Such Sharp Teeth! Meet Rachel Harrison: Rachel Harrison took the horror genre by storm with debut novel The Return, which was praised by readers and reviewers and called marvelous by the New York Times. Then, in her highly anticipated sophomore novel, Cackle, she delivered a clever and splendidly witchy look at women's relationships and self-empowerment that was hailed a must-read by USA Today, Elle, Bustle, Buzzfeed and more. She's back with a new novel to get you into the Halloween spirit. SUCH SHARP TEETH is a wild, witty and razor-sharp horror novel about a young woman in need of a transformation who finds herself in touch with the animal inside. Key Topics: Why authors shouldn't move the goalposts when celebrating their successes. Why Rachel chose to write in the horror genre. Rachel's belief that monsters help create tension easier than other antagonists. How she used Twitter successfully to find an agent. Words of advice she'd offer to aspiring authors. Episode two hundred seventeen - part two Jessikah sinks her teeth into Rachel Harrison's new book SUCH SHARP TEETH. We get a few words in about lady werewolves, and how these stories of transformation parallel how we feel about bodily autonomy.
We are so happy to speak with author Rachel Harrison about her new feminist werewolf novel, Such Sharp Teeth! This isn't horror as you'd normally expect it—the cover is pink, the setting includes Target and Starbucks, and the main character is a twin just trying to get control over her new werewolf tendencies—and her love life. We talk about werewolf metaphors for how we can't control everything (or even most things) about our bodies, how genre is a loose concept that can have one book shelved everywhere from women's fiction to thriller to horror, and how #PitDark set off an incredibly fast rise from unagented, to agented, to published. Do you know anyone with hairy palms? Weird question, but as this week's novel-in-question will convince you, it's best to be careful around the hirsute. Our guest is Rachel Harrison, returning to Talking Scared with her brand new SUCH SHARP TEETH. It's a tale of small-town relationships, female transformation, love and … werewolves.Anyone who has read either of Rachel's previous novels, The Return or Cackle, will know that she has a knack for reinventing horror tropes within snarky satire. Such Sharp Teeth is no different in that regard. Rachel and I talk about messy characters, beastly metaphors, and rage filled rooms. We get into the unexpected earnestness of romance, and we wonder if horror comedy may well be the best genre to represent contemporary existence. And stick around because Rachel also has the best ever answer to the question, what truly scares you… Enjoy!Such Sharp Teeth is released on October 4th by Berkley.Other books mentioned in this episode include: Build Your House Around My Body (2021), by Violet KupersmithThe Return (2020), by Rachel Harrison – episode 17Cackle (2021), by Rachel Harrison Support Talking Scared on PatreonCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

Rachel Harrison has quickly established herself as one of THE defining voices of the horror genre. She exploded onto the scene several years ago with her terrifying and unnerving debut The Return before following that up with the equally spooky Cackle. Both books were not only atmospheric and gothic, but they also were extremely well written, the pages flying by. Her newest book, Such Sharp Teeth, does the same. If you're a fan of werewolf books (and who isn't!) it's a must read. Rachel has a spent her life seemingly preparing to write scary books with shocking plot twists, given her obsession with The Twilight Zone. In this episode, Adam and Rachel discuss her introduction to the classic TV series, get into the history of why the show was so groundbreaking, and how she's spent her career trying to write stories like Rod Serling.
