In no particular order, here is an incomplete list of some awesome things about Spooky Season: bats, witches, vampires, scary ghost stories, sad ghost stories, funny ghost stories, werewolves, dogs in Halloween costumes, tiny candy bars, full-size candy bars, caramel corn, bobbing for apples, a chill in the air, staying up late to watch scary movies, dressing as your alter-ego, dressing as your hero, dressing as your monster, looking at other people's costumes, shuffling around in crunchy leaves, spooky music, haunted houses, orange things, purple things, black things, and the poem ‘The Raven.' In this episode, we take a virtual tour around the globe to atmospheric and historic destinations to celebrate Halloween. We find out if coffin races are a real thing, get into the OG New England vampires, and celebrate the history of the largest nighttime gathering in the United States. (Spoiler: There are costumes involved.) Then we recommend five books worthy of adding to your Spooky Season celebration: a cozy story of witchy friendship set in upstate New York, a haunted house story with a heroine who refuses to leave, a modern riff on a classic mystery trope set on Halloween, a horror novel for the Covid era, and a mashup of ghost story, family saga, and travelogue set in Italy. Support us on Patreon... Team LMSU are calling all Summerupperers to come join the expanded LMSU universe and support our Patreon! Every fortnight, the day after a regular episode drops, there will be a delicious, subscriber only BoCo episode. Because, THERE IS TOO MUCH! This week we are taking stock of post-election shenanigans and implications for climate policies. Run, don't walk over to https://www.patreon.com/LetMeSumUp.—It took something majorly main course to distract your entrepid hosts from microwaving some more post-election popcorn (never fear, this week's BoCo episode for Patreon subscribers will provide your fix). To detoxing from domestic politics we read this excellent analysis from Lauri Myllyvirta for Carbon Brief suggesting China's emissions may have peaked! Despite previous drops in emissions being linked to economic downturns, this time new installed renewable generation outpaced energy demand growth and displaced coal. What a delightful palate cleanser! Our main paper“Unlimited Power!!!” cackled your intrepid hosts as we imbibed this week's paper, The New Energy Trade: harnessing Australian renewables for global development from Reuben Finighan at the Superpower Institute. This cracker of a report had us stroking chins, making plans for world domination and tallying the BAGILLION dollars in export value from Australia's potential as a global leader in the ‘superpower trade'. This paper was methodical and compelling in fleshing out Ross Garnaut's vision of Australia as a renewable energy superpower - and what a huge juicy prize to be won! We recommend sampling the summary report for super curious Summerupperers. One more thingsTennant's One More Thing is: The Victorian Transmission Plan, 2025 edition, Draft for ConsultationFrankie's One More Thing is: the PC rolling up its sleeves and speeding up approvals for new energy infra, encouraging private investment in adaptation, and reducing the cost of meeting carbon targets are in its sights!Luke's One More Thing is: putting listeners on notice for LMSU's first book club episode! That's right, we're going to read (or perhaps listen) to Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson's provocative 'less regulation may be better for the environment' bestseller Abundance, and sum it up sometime soon. Get reading folks! And that's all from us Summerupperers! Send your hot tips and suggestions for papers to us at mailbag@letmesumup.net and check out our back catalogue at letmesumup.net.
This week on ImVibes, we batten down the hatches and welcome the wild, whiskey-soaked voices of King Cackle, the dirty pirate blues band you didn't know you needed. With guitars that howl like sea ghosts and vocals rougher than a storm-worn hull, these salty souls join us to talk shop—musical influences, the chaos of their live shows, and the raw, gritty magic of recording their latest tracks. We drift into tales of their roots—where Delta blues meets the punk docks—and swap stories about band origins, bartenders, and back alley taco trucks. The crew also gives us a peek inside their unconventional recording space, complete with beer can decorations that may still be there today. And of course, there's plenty of sharp-tongued banter between bandmates—equal parts hilarious and heartfelt—because when you live loud and sail dirty, you've got to keep laughing.Grab your headphones and a stiff drink—this episode's a gritty voyage through sound, soul, and salty stories.

I've invited Neil McRobert, of the Talking Scared Podcast, which is a wonderful show and I encourage you all to listen if you haven't already.
