Could the web be owned and governed by its users? That's what Web 3.0 offers, a decentralized web where individuals have control over their own sections of this virtual landscape! In this episode, Jon Henshaw, SEO at Paramount+ and the founder of Raven Tools & CoyWolf, joined me to discuss his experience on Decentralized Web3. Jon has recently worked on many Web3-based CDN / publishing/blogging projects. Included in our discussion are insights into what this means for the future of content publishing and SEO. It's a place for me to test things around publishing and to get something to rank. So with that being said, I would say that one of the most interesting things that I've observed over the last year with what I've been doing is the ability to rank content really high without any outreach or link building.–Jon Henshaw, 18:47 I always write in a way that's very that's focused on disambiguation. When I write, I mention an entity that can confirm to Google that this is what this thing is about.–Jon Henshaw, 26:13 At SEJ, we don't do any link building. Our link building tool is our publish button. –Loren Baker, 1:04:29 [00:00] - A little about Jon [06:23] - Is the increase in videos and images in search results relevant? [10:05] - How Coy Wolf started. [17:29] - What signals are becoming stronger over the last year? [18:50] - One interesting thing Jon has observed in the rankings. [24:16] - Coy Wolf's other experiments. [37:30] - A tactic for reputation management. [56:07] - Did search visibility for professional news & review sites increase? [1:01:42] - Can dot-com quality help? [1:07:00] - How Jon sets up his hosting. Resources mentioned: https://www.coywolf.news/ https://coywolf.app/ https://coywolf.pro/ https://coywolf.reviews/ https://coywolf.surf/ I think the latest algorithm update probably hit on things that may have to do with how much time people spend on the content before they actually click back to the search result.–Jon Henshaw, 26:38 I definitely do the experiment and do things that many people within our field would consider not best practices. Never seen that before, or I certainly wouldn't advise doing that. But, I've learned from it that there are some things I now would suggest or recommend because it's not as bad as you thought they might be.–Jon Henshaw. 54:14 It reminds me of the Japanese concept of Kaizen. Every mountain starts with a speck of dust, right, so Kaizen's at the thousandth step. But you have to start with step one, and you just grow and grow slowly and slowly over time. –Loren Baker, 50:43 For more content like this, subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/searchenginejournal Are you looking to keep up with current and effective digital marketing today? This week’s “Marketing Today” was recorded live at the 2019 Incite Group Brand Marketing Summit in San Francisco. The topic of this panel discussion was “Storytelling Deconstructed: The Hard Data Behind Emotive Creative.” Host Alan Hart moderates the discussion that includes Nathan Thornburgh, Co-Founder and CEO of Roads & Kingdoms, an independent media company, Noah Jacobson, SVP, Corporate Development & Strategy at TapClicks, a technology company that aggregates data sources, and Brian Border, Former Vice President of CRM at Shutterfly, an on-demand printing company. Noah Jacobson describes the importance of data by saying, “It really starts with understanding your audience. Understanding what’s that story you want to tell. And then once you’ve got that, the ability to really know what data is required to tell that story.” As the former vice president of CRM at Shutterfly, Brian Border stated, “As a marketing organization, we had to push hard for engagement and storytelling metrics to have a seat at the table when business discussions were happening.” On the topic of having clear and consistent messaging, Nathan Thornburgh shares that “When you are creating something, it’s got to have your point of view. Otherwise, there is nothing to grab onto as a viewer or a listener.” Highlights from this “Marketing Today” conversation include: All the panelists introduce themselves. (01:35) What advice would Noah give to marketers about data? (03:36) How did Brian balance showing conversion and non-conversion-focused content at Shutterfly? (11:32) Just how important is content with a point of view? (13:12) How does the data come back into the equation on the distribution side? (15:17) Brian discusses a Shutterfly holiday campaign and using data. (16:29) What are the watch outs for piecing together the right stories? (19:19) Nathan discusses first-ever branded content piece winning an Emmy Award. (22:05) How can brands be responsive but not too reactive with storytelling and engagement? (25:46) What roles are needed for effective data storytelling? (27:33) Brian shares an example of a mistake with display marketing. (30:00) How do you avoid confusing customers as your story evolves and changes? (32:00) How to change the mindset of an executive on short-term conversion to longer-term focus in a VC-owned situation? (34:02) How can you shift towards a brand-relationship focus to short-term revenue sales? If they could have one data source and data point, what would it be? Event of the week: Martech Conference What’s going on at MarTech? What are the conversations and the big themes people are talking about? Anand and David tell us what the big conversations are around. Spoiler alert: it’s not IoT and its not mobile marketing… Trend of the week Signs of CDP industry maturity? David tells us why he thinks the time has come to arrive at a formal certification of ‘what makes a CDP a CDP’ and why vertical CDPs are useful A vendor certification program by CDP Institute (must mean there is now a definitive agreement on what a CDP means?) A wave of vertical specialist CDPs (Optimove; Healthgrades) Continued funding and acquisitions in the space BigTech (sore of) announcing CDPs (Adobe) News of the week Centerbridge Partners to Acquire IBM’s Marketing Platform and Commerce Software Offerings to Form Standalone Marketing and Advertising Technology Company Centerbridge announced that it will acquire IBM’s marketing platform and commerce software offerings - why is this interesting to marketers? David, Babak and Anand get into an interesting conversation around business priorities and letting go… Fail of the week? The Agents of Change: SEO, Social Media, and Mobile Marketing for Small Business
When it comes to building our websites, we sometimes tend to believe that the more info we have on there, the better. But that’s not exactly true. Bogging down your website with images and content and code that is unnecessary and slows down your site is a big negative in Google’s eyes. If your website doesn’t provide an optimal user experience, you will be negatively impacted and rank much lower. Learning how to keep your site running fast – even if that means tweaking your content and photos slightly to accommodate things like different screen sizes and resolutions depending on the type of device it is being viewed on - will go a long way in providing both user satisfaction as well as appeal more favorable to Google. http://www.theagentsofchange.com/205
