Brené Brown (Atlas of the Heart), Parker Palmer (Courage to Teach), and Cory Muscara (Stop Missing Your Life) help us look at the emotions that often accompany receiving feedback – particularly if we hear something negative. In a recent post, Cory Muscara offered this: “Next time you're given negative feedback, say to yourself: Oof, it hurts to hear this. But I know if I can hold the discomfort, I can uncover the lesson. So, in what ways can this feedback spark creative inspiration for my next steps rather than trigger a spiral of self-doubt?” In the episode Yo shares her experience of being recently reviewed for her position, Adjunct Lecturer at SJSU. We hope you've taken a similar journey and can relate to the emotions that came up for you. While her example is about teaching, Dwayne Dyer reminds us that “just as we're all students throughout life, we're all teachers.” Books referenced in the episode: Atlas of the Heart Stop Missing Your Life Courage to Teach Previous episodes that relate well to this topic: Ep. 6 Can We Just Ditch Performance Appraisals? Join us for a discussion of global labor organizing hosted by Internationalism from Below and Haymarket Books. The global supply chain crisis in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic provides an opportunity to reflect on the vulnerabilities of the just-in-time model of capitalist production. As capital studies and prepares for risks to the global supply chain, so must workers if we are to make global systemic changes needed to reverse the many catastrophic crises facing the planet. The new issue of the journal New Global Studies features a forum on Workers' Movements and the Global Supply Chain, which examines unions and global labor organizing in seven countries, identifying and assessing strategies for cross-border worker organizing at these choke points to apply pressure, extract gains, and tip the balance of power in their favor. Join us for this discussion with two of the contributors to that forum, Robert Ovetz and Gifford Hartman, leading experts on global labor struggles and strategy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert Ovetz is a Senior Lecturer in Political Science at San José State University. He focuses on global labor organizing strategy and is the Membership & Organizing Chair of his union, the SJSU chapter of California Faculty Association, an anti-racist, social justice union of 29,000 faculty members in the California State University system. He is the editor of Workers' Inquiry and Global Class Struggle: Strategies, Tactics, Objectives (2020) and the author of When Workers Shot Back: Class Conflict from 1877 to 1921 (2018) and We the Elites: Why the U.S. Constitution Serves the Few (2022). He writes about worker organizing for Dollars & Sense magazine, is Book Review Editor of the Journal of Labor and Society, and is a contributor to The Routledge Handbook of the Gig Economy (2022). He can reached at rfovetz@riseup.net and his writings can be found here. Gifford Hartman is a Certified Trainer and Instructional Assistant for the Global Labour University, a founding member of the San Francisco Bay Area-based Global Supply Chain Study/Research Group, and the International Solidarity Liaison for Railroad Workers United. Over the last 25 years he has been an adult educator, labor trainer and labor historian. Prior to that, he was a rank-and-file member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). He has helped organize workshops, seminars, conferences and educational training sessions for unions, labor activists and environmental organizations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. His article “Supply Chain Workers' Inquiries: Class Struggle along Value Chains” appears in the current issue of New Global Studies. He can be contacted at giffordhartman@gmail.com and his writings can be found here. Moderator: Lala Peñaranda is a climate and labor activist from Colombia, based in New York. Book Vs. Movie: The Joy Luck ClubAmy Tan's 1989 Novel Vs the 1993 Wayne Wang FilmTo finish out AAPI month the Margos talk about Amy Tan and her debut novel The Joy Luck Club which became a sensation when it was released in the late 1980s. The Oakland, California native was raised by Chinese immigrant parents who instilled a strong ethic in her and wanted her to take advantage of being an American while remaining Chinese in her heart and actions. Tan found this very tough, especially after her father & brother died and she wound up in Switzerland at the age of 15. We talk about Tan's teenage years and her strained relationship with her mother which later became fodder for her first novel. In 1989 the hardcover book sold over 275, 000 copies, and the paperback rights went for $1.2 million. It was just a matter of time to get the book adapted into a film. The Joy Luck Club is the story of four immigrant families who are all based in San Francisco with the daughters struggling to emotionally connect with their strict mothers. The women are complex and have many secrets between them that go all the way back to their time in China. Each has a story about why they wanted to come to America and how challenging it is to raise a child in a new culture while retaining your principles and values. The film was directed by Wayne Wang who hired the best Asian actors in the business to play the Chinese American cast. The film was highly successful but it was still decades before an all Asain cast had a hit film in America (Crazy Rich Asians.) There were several differences between the novel which had eight different stories to tell and the movie which has just over an hour and 30 minutes run time. So between the two, which did we like more? The book or the movie? In this ep the Margos discuss:Amy Tan's background and the inspiration for her bookThe different women in China and San Francisco and how they all relate to each otherThe changes between the novel and the 1993 movieThe cast: Rosalind Chao (Rose,) Lauren Tom (Lena,) Tamlyn Tomita (Waverly,) Ming-Na Wen (June,) Tsai Chin (Lindo,) Kieu Chinh (Suyann,) Lisa Lu (An-Mei,) France Nuyen (Ying-Ying,) Andrew McCarthy (Ted,) Christopher Rich (Rich,) Michael Paul Chan (Harold,) and Russell Wong (Lin Xiao.)
