How Do We Handle the Future of Taxes and Data - Special Guest: Annette Nellen

Tcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 8, 2021 47:22

Death and taxes. Both are inevitable and nobody much likes either one. Especially taxes. The system is naturally inefficient and more than a few people of all political persuasions can't help but think that some if not all of that money is just vanishing into thin air.  Fortunately, there are a few out there working to reform the Byzantine mess that is the IRS and the U.S. tax code. One of those brave souls is Annette Nellen. Annette is a professor at San Jose State University and has been on so many boards and received so many awards in the area of taxation and accounting that it would take all the space in this article to list them all. Her most recent article that made a wave or two in tax land advocates for getting rid of the standard April 15 due date.  This in part has to do with the previously mentioned inefficiency of the current system. Given that all of your tax data is collected digitally and then digitally deposited in your account, why do you have to deal with a bunch of cumbersome paper forms, or digital forms that duplicate them, and then send in your tax return, most likely digitally? Wouldn't it be a lot easier for most people if the IRS just sent you your return? No forms, no waiting, no glitches that lose your return in the mail, they just calculate what you owe and send it to you. Unless you are self-employed or make a lot of charitable donations this system should work very well.  Some object that they really don't trust the IRS will their data. The truth is though that they have it already. That's precisely why the direct return would work. However, Annette has some ideas that would make the situation more palatable.  First and foremost, all of your data would go into your own unique cloud. This would work whether you work at Starbucks or run a public benefit data management and protection company. That way, you could sync different incomes, donations, accounts, and the software to process it all in one place. The big benefit would be that you could even set the system to process a return for you on your own timetable. It wouldn't change the total, just when you get it. Or, a person could adjust their various exemptions on the fly if they want to tweak their taxes so that they are only ever paying in exactly what they are required to, eliminating the need for a return at all.  This could be especially beneficial for those who are self-employed. One of the hazards of working for yourself is hoping you don't wind up owing a massive amount at the end of the year. Many just set aside money out of their income for that specific purpose. The system Annette proposes would allow the self-employed to pay throughout the year.  This brings up a question if this would work so well, what is the real hold up? In a word – technology. Not that the technology doesn't exist. Rather, the IRS and government, in general, doesn't have it yet. Government agencies tend to lag very far behind in the technology department. There are a lot of reasons for that, but you can also be sure that it will change in the years to come. As the professor observes, the generation currently in college is growing up largely technology dependent. They live in a world where people don't use cash, or even a card, they just pay with their phones and call it a day. As they move up the ranks in the private and public sector, the need for the technology even in the most backward of government warehouses will need to catch up.  All of this is just the beginning of course. There are a lot of issues with our current system and many things that could be done to reform it. Until then, make sure your taxes are in on time. Breena Martinez has a goal of inspiring women exploring fitness, so they learn lasting physical change comes after a mental and emotional choice. At the 2020 Mr. Olympia, an event she has qualified for every year since 2014, she placed 10th in the world. Going into her 7th year as a veteran of the bikini bodybuilding division, her approach and core beliefs have shifted dramatically. The approach Breena takes is centered around Jesus Christ. Currently she is one of the Women’s Ministry Group Leaders and someone who volunteers regularly for events at The Grove in Chandler, AZ. While competing in a subjective sport which requires being judged and changing a lifestyle to be one of the best in the world, it can be tricky to navigate how Jesus and God is part of her life, but she is able to explain her process as she is living through it now. She is constantly learning and growing and being able to share her experience may shed light on a new perspective. As a walk-on scholarship athlete to the Women’s SJSU basketball team, she took her work ethic and love for sports and health, to a career that spoke to her everyday passion. Her personal training journey started at UFC Gym as a Personal Trainer in Concord, CA. In a span of three years, she grew to become one of the most successful Personal Trainers in the company and regularly generated over $100k in annual revenue. In the time she has been competing, she has become a 6x Olympian (’14-20), invited to the Arnold from (’18-’19), and is a 6x IFBB Pro Champion with the 2021 season just around the corner.

Cuisine Noir Magazine … Behind Business … The Good, The Bad And The Ugly is hosted by V. Sheree Williams, the publisher of Cuisine Noir Magazine and Dr. Vibe. Cuisine Noir Magazine … Behind Business … The Good, The Bad And The Ugly are in depth conversations with people who have been featured in Cuisine Noir Magazine. Recently, Andrea Lacy was on Cuisine Noir Magazine … Behind Business … The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. Andrea is the CEO of Luv's Brownies. Andrea Lacy established Luv's Brownies in October 1996, first preparing her delicious morsels in her apartment and then moving to a professional kitchen as sales grew. Her story begins while attending San Jose State University, Aundrea struggled with algebra classes. She failed the same math class five times. Her counselor advised her to work with the Disability Resource Center and get tested for a learning disability. She was diagnosed with dyslexia. But prior to discovering that she had dyslexia — during her first semester at SJSU, as a thank you gift she baked a friend some brownies. At the time she noticed the dough was thick but baked the brownies anyway. She revisited the brownie recipe and realized she transposed some numbers in her ingredients list without knowing she had dyslexia. Aundrea's belief is some detriments are true blessings in disguise. Luv's Brownies come in 14 flavors including rocky road, peanut butter brownie s'more, coconut caramel, and mint chip, and they are sold online and shipped nationwide. The company has been featured in magazines such as Rachel Ray, Essence, and Ebony — and Aundrea has been featured on the cover of Black Enterprise magazine. She is also the author of Brownie Points: Seven Steps to Success for Woman Entrepreneurs from One Who Made It! Luv's Brownies®, Home of the Original Heart-Shaped Brownie®, and Luv Bites® (bite-sized heart-shaped brownies) are all registered trademarks of the Luv's Brownies company. Luv's Brownies is an LLC. San Carlos Flight Center's Safety Seminars

San Diego, a city known for its warm temperatures, beautiful skyline and picturesque views is a perfect place for pilots to visit. With decent flight planning, and consideration, a memorable trip awaits you in San Diego; a great cross-country destination from the Bay Area.   San Carlos Flight Center invites CFI Kyle Smathers and student pilot Macario Namie to discuss their recent flight training adventure to Palomar, an airport closely located to San Diego. In this seminar, they will cover the various weather conditions encountered during their flight, operations in LAX class B airspace, and how they used the flight to meet the training requirement for a long cross-country flight. Long flights require planning, but often things don’t go to plan. For trips to coastal cities, you’ll need to factor in the possibility of coastal fog affecting your planned departure. Join us for a unique opportunity to hear from both sides of the cockpit as the trip unfolds into a learning experience for all. Kyle Smathers started flying in 2011 and is passionate about aviation.  Kyle graduated from SJSU with an Aerospace Engineering degree, and now works as a CFI at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a Commercial: ASEL, Instrument Airplane Pilot. He offers training in Private Pilot, Commercial Pilot, High performance transition, Complex transition and Flight review.     Macario Namie is a recently certificated private pilot. After he obtains his certificate he plans to make frequent trips to the San Diego/SoCal area to visit family and friends; he thought bringing his CFI along while he was still a student was a great way to become acquainted with the complex area.
