Alright, this week…it's the first week in November in America and the election is the only thing we can think about. We have no idea if America will still be a thing by the time you hear this…but we will try to continue the conversation about politics…I mean opera. Then…a free throw from bass Kenneth Kellogg who is set to make his Chicago debut in his signature role, The Father in Jeanine Tesoriu and Tazewell Thompson's BLUE. Plus, in the ‘Two Minute Drill'…we got one tenor chiding us and another tenor grousing about his picture not being included on the cover of a DVD and, I'm sorry, Democracy is at stake here, so forgive us if we don't really care. The world premiere of Jubilee debuted at Seattle Opera with its inaugural performance over the weekend. Jubilee is a new opera honoring the Fisk Jubilee singers, a group of groundbreaking Black American singers from Fisk University, in Tennessee. Soundside's Diana Opong sat down with creator and director Tazewell Thompson, who reflected on how the seeds of the opera Jubilee were sown in his early years living in New York. It was during his formative years that he was introduced to the rich tapestry of spirituals through old recordings, a discovery that ignited a profound sense of connection in his life.  Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! Seattle Opera presents the world premiere of JUBILEE, a new opera celebrating spirituals. Created by Tazewell Thompson, librettist of BLUE, JUBILEE tells the story of how a group of African American singers toured America and Europe in the 1870s, using this wonderful music—America's first great contribution to the world of music—to raise money to build Fisk University. Seattle Opera Dramaturg Jonathan Dean introduces JUBILEE, whose score consists of newly orchestrated arrangements of over 40 beloved spirituals, sung by thirteen singers. Musical examples in this podcast include spirituals sung by Paul Robeson and Marian Anderson; The Long Road to Freedom: An Anthology of Black Music; The Trouble I've Seen (Moses Hogan Chorale); Negro Spirituals (Derek Lee Ragin and the Moses Hogan Chorale); Spirituals in Concert (Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman); Gospel Songs (The Missionary Quartet); and Mary Elizabeth Williams singing La forza del destino.

Conductor John DeMain is noted for his dynamic performances on concert and opera stages throughout the world. In January 2023, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Opera Association, the association's highest award. During his three decades as the Madison Symphony Orchestra music director, John has consistently raised the quality of the orchestra by introducing blind auditions and continuously expanding the repertoire to encompass ever more challenging and virtuosic works. His active conducting schedule has taken him to the stages of the National Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the symphonies of Seattle, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Columbus, Houston, San Antonio, Long Beach, and Jacksonville, along with the Pacific Symphony, Boston Pops, Aspen Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Orchestra of Seville, the Leipzig MDR Sinfonieorchester, and Mexico's Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional. In 2019, he conducted the world premiere of Tazewell Thompson's Blue at the Glimmerglass Festival to critical acclaim.  He “drew a vibrant performance from an orchestra of nearly 50 players; the cast was superb,” said The New York Times.

The state of Georgia recently promised nearly $2 billion in incentives to persuade Hyundai to open an electric vehicle plant there. But Georgia isn't the only Southern state betting that EVs will usher in a manufacturing renaissance in the region. As the Gulf States Newsroom's Stephan Bisaha reports, many Southern states are also preparing for the EV industry to lead to carloads of good jobs. The New Orleans Opera is putting racial injustice front and center at an upcoming performance of “Blue.” This contemporary opera was created by Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori and Emmy-nominated librettist Tazewell Thompson.  Timothy Douglas, the production's stage director, talks about bringing this story to a Southern stage for the first time.  In May, the nonprofit Unity of Greater New Orleans found that the city's unhoused population had increased by more than 50 % since 2022. Now, an ambitious project – backed by federal funds and homeless service nonprofits – is in the works to close down homeless encampments and provide housing for residents in need.  Mandy Chapman Semple, a managing partner at Clutch Consulting, the Texas-based group that has been hired to lead the project, joins us for more on the initiative.  Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Diane Mack. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our assistant producer is Aubry Procell. Our engineer is Garrett Pittman. Once upon a time in America, the opera, like most things, wasn’t for everyone. But in the 21st century, some new shows are pushing the form forward to resonate more widely and deeply. Can opera rise out of its origins and touch communities of color with complex histories and relationships to those not of color? Host Paige Hernandez and contributor Tazewell Thompson tell their stories of encountering opera for the first time and their reflections on being recent first-time librettists. Rousuck's Review: ----Intimate Apparel---- At Everyman Theatre

It's Thursday, and that means theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins Tom with her weekly review of one of the region's many thespian offerings. Today, she talks about Everyman Theatre's new production of Intimate Apparel, a play that premiered in 2003 at Baltimore's Center Stage. It's a contemporary work written in classic style by Lynn Nottage, the first female playwright to win two Pulitzers. Inspired by a true story, Intimate Apparel centers on Esther (played by Dawn Ursula), a self-employed African American seamstress in turn-of-the-century New York who is working hard - and saving her money - making beautiful undergarments for her well-to-do clientele. But she dreams of a grander life, while nurturing her romantic relationship with a Jewish fabric merchant (played by Drew Kopas). As an emotionally wrenching turn of events puts Esther’s dreams at risk, the play explores the tenacity of the human spirit against the powerful pressures of class, race and culture. The play is directed by Tazewell Thompson.Intimate Apparel continues at Everyman Theatre through Sunday, November 19th.

Your host, the King of DC Media, welcomes castmembers, Will Cobbs, Joy Jones, Dawn Ursula, Bueka Uwemedimo, and others from Arena Stage's "A Raisin in the Sun"  to talk about this excellent production of the classic play. Dial 347.884.8997 to ask a question. From DC Metro Theater Arts: “I am a giant surrounded by ants!” exclaimed Walter Lee Younger in a scene from A Raisin in the Sun. Walter is the embodiment of how society, family members, and internal struggle can defer dreams. Written by the gone but much remembered Lorraine Hansberry, this forward-looking and timeless play was truthfully directed by Tazewell Thompson in a way that mined many nuances of the struggle to be effectively human. Such is the truthfulness of the show, and it will leave audiences with a sense of wonder; Arena Stage’s A Raisin in the Sun is a lovely stage symphony of treasured performances.
