We all perceive his captivating presence on screen, teetering between grace and awkwardness, the intentional and the spontaneous. Bill Nighy's humor embodies the essential qualities of British comedy while also showcasing remarkable versatility. Born in Caterham, United Kingdom in 1949, Bill Nighy always dreamt of becoming a writer. However, life had other plans for him. After giving up his ambitions of becoming a writer, his comedic genius has been celebrated worldwide, earning him an Oscar for Best Actor, a BAFTA Award for Best Actor, and a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama. He started his career on the stage of Liverpool's Everyman Theatre and made his London debut with the Royal National Theatre in the late 1970s. He then appeared on British television and radio, relishing the opportunity to play "anyone, because on the radio your appearance doesn't matter." His career reached a turning point in 2003 marked by his involvement in the film “Underworld” where he played the vampire Elder Viktor, and especially by the role that brought him international recognition: the jaded rocker Billy Mack in “Love Actually”. Almost two decades later, he proved equal skills in a role that resonated more closely with him: the character of Mr. Williams, a mundane bureaucrat in “The Living'”(2022), who discovers a new zest for life. This performance comes highly recommended. Convinced that his impressive career is the result of chance and lucky encounters, Bill Nighy is a modest workaholic, embodying the epitome of British self-deprecation. In this Film Ireland podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Paul Mercier, Writer & Director of Prospect House ahead of its screening at this year's Cork International Film Festival. Prospect House is a satirical film about a group of protestors who stage a period re- enactment in a dilapidated 18th century house in a last ditch effort to save the building from demolition. The film deals with the final days of the illegal occupation of the house by the protestors. They are a motley crew of artists, actors and activists who want to bring the building's plight to the attention of the world and to rescue it from the claws of aggressive property developers. The protestors believe that they can save the building by telling its story. But the project is rife with discord, as no-one can agree what story they are telling. Set in Ireland in the present day, the film challenges conventional understandings and perceptions of heritage, historical narrative and truth. Prospect House screens at the Cork International Film Festival at Everyman Theatre, Cork, at 8.30pm on Friday 17th November. https://corkfilmfest.org/ https://filmireland.net/

Hamlet is widely considered to be William Shakespeare's greatest tragedic play, while Harvey is a 1944 comedy about a man whose best friend is a giant, invisible rabbit. Do these two plays have anything in common? In this new production of Hamlet, Baltimore native and nationally recognized Shakespeare director, Eleanor Holdridge, reveals this iconic piece of Shakespearian literature as a contemporary world full of tension. “We're creating a world of magic and wonder in which Hamlet can grapple with the questions of our existence,” Holdridge said of the production in a press release. “Even when he tries to make sense of and avenge his father's untimely death, he discovers the ineffable strength of his own humanity.” Harvey tells the story of Elwood P. Dowd (played by Resident Company Member, Bruce Randolph Nelson), a lovable eccentric who claims his best friend is a six-foot-tall invisible rabbit named Harvey. When Elwood's sister, Veta, tries to have him committed in hopes of protecting the family's social standing, chaos ensues. The original Pulitzer Prize-winning play was written by Mary Chase.  It's directed at Everyman by Jackson Gay. Chesapeake Shakespeare Company's production of Hamlet and Everyman Theatre's production of Harvey both continue through May 21.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's time for another visit from Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins us every week with her reviews of Maryland's regional stage. Today, she tells us about Everyman Theatre's new production of James Goldman's 1966 play, The Lion in Winter, a classic but still-resonant tale of power, political ambition and treachery, told through the travails of the 12th-centuury English king, Henry II, and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitane. The historical drama, which was adapted into an Oscar-winning 1968 film starring Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn, touches on themes that recur in today's rancorous pre-election American politics. The play is directed at The Everyman by the theater's founder and artistic director, Vincent Lancisi. His seven-member cast is led by Jefferson Russell as Henry II, and Deborah Hazlett as Eleanor. In supporting roles as the three royal sons are Zack Powell as Geoffrey, Ben Ribler as John and Grant Emerson Harvey as Richard, with Ryan Dalasung playing the young French king, Philip II, and Hannah Kelly playing Alais, Philip's sister (and Henry II's mistress). The Lion in Winter continues at Baltimore's Everyman Theatre through November 13.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cho and Barbara Wilks started their architecture firm in the late 1970's having moved to Baltimore a few years earlier after graduating from Cornell University's architecture school. Beginning with rowhouse renovations, they gradually expanded their portfolio to include larger buildings and added partners David Benn and George Holback to enhance the firm's reach. An early focus on housing led to market rate warehouse renovations such as Tindeco Wharf and Canton Cove, and a number of affordable housing/historic school house renovations located in some of Baltimore's most challenging neighborhoods. Believing in the arts as a catalyst for community revitalization, Cho began to focus her projects primarily in the cultural realm where she has worked closely with clients to assure that architectural concepts reflect each institution's mission. Her portfolio includes many award-winning projects such as the Baltimore School for the Arts, the Jim Rouse Center at the American Visionary Art Museum, the Everyman Theatre and Center Stage. As an active leader and a patron for many cultural organizations, she has helped to position and celebrate the arts as a vital ingredient in the life of strong and vibrant cities. Diane currently serves on the Board of Trustees of MICA and has recently served on the boards of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Everyman Theatre. After 35 years of building the firm in Baltimore, she and her partners sold their architecture firm in 2017 to Quinn Evans, a national firm headquartered in Washington DC with five other branches throughout the mid-Atlantic and Midwest. She remains a principal with Quinn Evans and continues to spearhead projects within her area of expertise.  ** Thank you to this Episode's Sponsor: http://bqe.com/masterclass (BQE) makes it easy to manage your projects and people, for maximum productivity and ultimate profitability. Start implementing powerful systems for the profitability you need and the freedom you want.
