Join artistic director, Jerome Davis, in a conversation with the talented director, actor, and writer, Lonny Price who was the original Charley in Merrily We Roll Along. Tune in as Lonny talks about his life, career, and working with giants in the theatre world, such as Stephen Sondheim and Athol Fugard.
Lonny Price is Broadway royalty and just happens to be one of Bobby's best friends. They have shared several professional successes together, but in the end, it is their deep and enduring friendship they value most. Lonny shares the evolution of his ambition - one that was singly focused on professional success as a young person, and that has balanced into a philosophy based in kindness and perspective. "Dennis versus the Movies" continues as we welcome back to the show puppeteer and children's entertainer Zach Woliner to talk about the third Muppets movie, an homage to the Broadway musical films of the 1930s. The Muppets head to Manhattan with stars in their eyes and a dream of Broadway stardom, only to break apart, Kermit to get amnesia, and Miss Piggy to face down a New York full of muggers, cruel bosses, and sexual harrassment. It's a family film. Starring Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, Juliana Donald, Lonny Price, Louis Zorich, Dabney Coleman, and Art Carney. Written by Tom Patchett and Jay Tarses. Directed by Frank Oz

Hello Therese, we're back for our annual holiday extravaganza. This year we're movie-clubbing Todd Haynes' very luscious and very gay Carol (2015), starring Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Sarah Paulson. We discuss the erotic imagery of merely a glove, lesbian sex scenes through the lens of a gay man, and the joy in watching flat male characters (what even IS Jake Lacy's character's name?). All that Carol talk for you plus our reactions to the Golden Globe nominations, our dream casting of Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Emma Stone as Pearl Bailey and Carol Channing in a future film, and some Muppet talk. And then…we give you a solid ten minutes on our theory that gay men hate all gay male things while lesbians are much more accepting, our trip down memory lane to remember “lesbian kiss episodes” during November sweeps, the legacy of Roseanne, and Natalie Zea hunting down Kimberly Pierce for the Boys Don't Cry short she starred in! About David: DAVID CADY is currently a professor of commercial and musical theatre performance at AMDA, NYU, and Pace University. Prior, he was a casting director for Donna DeSeta Casting for close to 30 years. In addition to countless commercials, his casting credits include the original Dirty Dancing, Disney's Enchanted, Michael John LaChiusa's The Petrified Prince for the Public Theater, and the world premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman's Whistle Down the Wind, directed by Harold Prince. He was an original cast member of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Merrily We Roll Along, and can be seen in Lonny Price's film about the experience, The Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened. Actors don't think like the rest of us. They have a very, very particular way of doing things, and that can lead to actors getting stuck. You need accountability. It's important for actors to engage with that other part of their brain and realize that it is a business. It's important that you do something for your career that makes you want to vomit in your mouth just a little bit every day. In order to be successful, you need to do things that push you out of your comfort zone. You need to do things that get you to that next bit, to that next level of success. It's such a competitive business, and every single actor is competing, and you are competing with yourself. It isn't just about your talent. Your agent is probably not going to do much more than submit you for work. The misconception is that agents are going to mold your career. Actors are sensitive people, but, in David's experience, agents, managers, and casting directors are not sensitive people. The first job is being the best actor that you can be and continuing to study and be in class and get better at what people are ultimately going to hire you to do. And then the second job is to learn how the business works. Understanding yourself is going to make you just a better craftsman, but it's also going to help you as a person get out of your way. If you don't understand what's holding you back, then it's just going to keep holding you back. I think the people who are going to get furthest are the people who love it, love the work, who love writing letters, sending out pictures and resumes, and doing the mailings. They're jazzed by it. They're excited by it. It's about having the confidence to meet yourself before anybody else tells you that you're good.

COMPANY COMPOSER: Stephen Sondheim LYRICIST: Stephen Sondheim BOOK: George Furth DIRECTOR: Hal Prince CHOREOGRAPHER: Michael Bennett PRINCIPLE CAST: Beth Howland (Amy), Dean Jones (Bobby), Elaine Stritch (Joanne) OPENING DATE: Apr 26, 1970 CLOSING DATE: Jan 01, 1972 PERFORMANCES: 705 SYNOPSIS: On his 35th birthday, bachelor Robert is confronted by his happily, and unhappily, married friends, as well as his three girlfriends, who all push him towards committing to another human being. Stephen Sondheim had tremendous early success as a Broadway lyricist, but until the success of Company, his work as a composer could not be regarded as commercially successful. Based on a series of sketches about married couples by actor George Furth, Sondheim and director Hal Prince developed a musical which navigated a bachelor's relationships with his lovers and married friends. Rick Pender promotes Company's significance as an early book musical which, through Boris Aronson's design, Prince and Michael Bennett's staging, Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations, subject matter, and rough narrative, epitomized contemporary storytelling and broke away from the conventions of traditional musical theatre. Later revivals of the show staged by John Doyle and Marianne Elliott employed tactics which kept Company at the cutting edge of the art form and in dialogue with timely societal critique. Rick Pender- From 2004 to 2016 Rick Pender edited The Sondheim Review; in 2017 he launched EverythingSondheim.org. His book The Stephen Sondheim Encyclopedia was published in 2021. He has written about theater for Cincinnati CityBeat since it began publishing in 1994, and he was the paper's arts and entertainment editor from 1998 until 2006. Ohio's Society of Professional Journalists recognized him the state's best arts critic in 2002 and 2017. He contributed theater interviews to public radio station WVXU's weekly arts magazine for 15 years. Rick is a past chair of the American Theatre Critics Association. “You're only the new kid in town once. I disagree with that. You're the new kid in town every six months because everyone has a short memory.” - Josh Johnston. Happy 2022, everyone! Born into a theatre family, Josh Johnston has a perspective on the industry fresh enough to start the new year right. One of the best things Josh promotes is his use of boundaries, something we all can implement more, especially since we've been so available thanks to the use of social media and Zoom. “Sometimes I think we all need that space to decompress or find out Zen,” says Johnston. “I don't do yoga and I don't meditate. So, mine is just getting away from the phone and popping back into people's lives when I'm around. And it's a big ask for a friend to just be cool with that. I like wiping my feet at the door. I don't like constantly being ‘on' and having to go to sleep and wake up with my thoughts on what I need to do to survive and be creative everyday.” Josh is a self proclaimed superfan of Dear Multi-Hyphenate and can quote many of the guests in previous episodes. He has a factual brain full of memories, facts, and statistics. I've tried to get him on the podcast before, but he's declined until now, thanks to him entering a part of his career where he is actively producing, writing, and performing – especially now that his Radio Play Revival featuring Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Chastain, Boyd Gaines, and more has been released. On this episode, we follow the themes of doing what you know, understanding who you are, establishing boundaries to protect yourself and your art, making an art out of a trade, studying and applying craft, moving from coast to coast, and Josh's wild relationships with for now jobs – like working the National Hot Dog Eating Championship. And students of the theatre listening to this episode? There are a lot of good nuggets to take away! “I cannot sing Golden Age musical theatre eight times a week,” says Johnston. “I would be putting hundreds of people at risk. I'm wasting their time and their money and resources. There are better people for that job than me… and I know that. There are other things I can do.” Josh Johnston's Radio Play Revival features great American actors performing great American works of literature. Performed by both established and new-and-emerging performers, musicians, and writers, Radio Play Revival pays homage to the golden age of radio, in the now-second golden age of audio. Josh Johnston is an actor and a writer, and now producer and director. Onstage, Josh toured with The Acting Company in their 40th season (Hamlet; Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (directed by John Rando)), and has worked regionally; selected regional works include: The Merchant of Venice & Henry VIII at Valley Shakespeare Festival in Connecticut, The Cradle Will Rock in NYC (The Acting Company benefit at The Jacobs Theatre), and 5 shows at The Ravinia Festival in Illinois, including Passion, A Little Night Music (professional stage debut back in 2001!), and Annie Get Your Gun, all 5 Ravinia shows directed by Lonny Price. Josh is also a musician, playing bass at various Duplex Cabaret Theatre shows downtown, and subbing in for Billy Magnussen on guitar and vocals in Billy's former band, Reserved For Rondee, at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. During the pandemic, Josh moved to LA where he began pursuing work in TV and film; he most recently played a supporting role in the film TO LESLIE (post-production), directed by Michael Morris, and in the past, has worked on Season 1 of the show Benders, on IFC. Josh writes screenplays and TV scripts when he is not acting, because he cannot dance or coach singers or wait tables. He's bad at all 3 of those things. Learn more about your ad choices. This week on Masters of the Stage we are revisiting a conversation with James Lapine and Lonny Price, moderated by Stage Directors and Choreographers Society Executive Director, Laura Penn. Technology has made the ability to capture and distribute live performances via high-quality video a reality the theatre field is embracing with increasing regularity. New players are entering the field every day, including BroadwayHD, Amazon.com, and Netflix, among others. When it comes to the crafts of stage directing and choreography, what is your relationship with the video director? What is the role of the editor in this new iteration of your work? How can you ensure the integrity of the live experience? What should you be concerned about when work created for the stage, now opens the possibility for audiences to access live performances on the large screen, small screen, and portable devices?
This week Julie Miranda, and Zane chat with Jessica Kate Ryan about which of life's truths can be gleaned from Sondheim's infamous flop, Merrily We Roll Along!"...to be a Stephen Sondheim fan is to have one's heart broken at regular intervals. Usually, the heartbreak comes from Mr. Sondheim's songs -for his music can tear through us with an emotional force as moving as Gershwin's. And sometimes the pain is compounded by another factor - for some of Mr. Sondheim's most powerful work turns up in shows (''Anyone Can Whistle,'' ''Pacific Overtures'') that fail. Suffice it to say that both kinds of pain are abundant in ''Merrily We Roll Along,'' the new Sondheim-Harold Prince-George Furth musical that opened at the Alvin last night. Mr. Sondheim has given this evening a half-dozen songs that are crushing and beautiful - that soar, and linger, and hurt. But the show that contains them is a shambles." - By FRANK RICH, New York Times- FURTHER READING -Wiki - Musical, PlayiTunesSpotify- CELEBRITY SHOUTOUTS -Stephen Sondheim, George Furth, George S. The film tells the story of the making of the original Broadway production of Merrily We Roll Along and of the hopeful young performers whose lives were transformed by it.
Our special guest in the Booth this week is Sean Graney, the highly acclaimed Artistic Director of one of our favorite Chicago off-Loop theater companies, The Hypocrites. While Roscoe continues to recover from his health condition, Gary goes one-on-one with Sean in a lively and informative discussion of Graney's background, his founding of The Hypocrites 20 years ago, his experiences with acting, playwriting, adapting and directing, and a host of other theatre-related topics. Sean began his theatrical life in Boston. After school, he chose Chicago as the place to lay down his creative roots. Sean has received wide recognition for his vibrant and forceful productions of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore, and his ground-breaking All Our Tragic, a tour de force adaptation of the 32 extant Greek tragedies, performed in one 12-hour cycle (with meal breaks, of course!). Gary asks Sean about his approach to running a theater company, the nature of collaboration, and his style of working to adapt classic pieces of the theater canon. We also discuss the recent developments within The Hypocrites that have led Sean to cease current operations and to reorganize the company under a different business model. It's fascinating conversation and a must-listen for anyone who is considering starting a theater company or is struggling to remain viable in this rapidly changing cultural environment. Sean reveals what he's working on now and how this new show - related to All Our Tragic - will be developed and work-shopped in several environments. Cannot wait... Along the way, Gary mentions another long-running operation that has recently announced it is ceasing its presentations - Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus, The Greatest Show on Earth. Declining attendance and low ticket sales, attributed in part to the removal of the elephant acts from the show, have led the Feld Corporation to pull up the tent stakes and call it a day, after 146 years of bringing live circus entertainment to millions of young and old alike. Grateful to have seen the show this past November and will always have fond memories of watching the childrens' delight at the spectacle. Gary relates his experience seeing the documentary film, "The Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened," an account of the making of, and untimely demise of, the Sondheim/Prince musical Merrily We Roll Along. This fine film from director Lonny Price is a treasure trove of original production footage, audition tapes, and interviews with all the leading participants, including original cast members and Sondheim himself. It's not in wide release so you'll have to seek out your favorite art house or local film forum. But it is well worth the effort. A must-see for all theatre fans or musical geeks - like us! Finally, Sean and Gary discuss the recent benefit performance of their award-winning production of Our Town, directed by and featuring David Cromer, in a staged reading at the Steppenwolf Theatre. It was an emotional evening, and the Chicago theater community was out in force to show their affection and solidarity for a struggling company of brothers and sisters. To support The Hypocrites in their reorganization, or to donate to their mission of presenting challenging and engaging theater, go to www.the-hypocrites.com or click here to get to their donate page. Lonny Price and Abigail Pogrebin, original cast members of Stephen Sondheim & Hal Prince’s 1981 musical "Merrily We Roll Along," discuss Price's new documentary "Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened."
In a DCN focused on preparing for the first rehearsal, directors May Adrales, Anne Kauffman, and Lonny Price describe how they respectively get from picking a project to the rehearsal room. Listen in as these three master directors discuss how they prepare to stage a piece, how they initially approach the all important collaborations with their fellow artists, how they compartmentalize when juggling multiple projects in pre-production at the same time, and more broadly, how they approach time management.

Lonny Price is a director, actor, and writer, primarily in theatre. He is perhaps best known for his creation of the role of Charley Kringas in the Broadway musical Merrily We Roll Along and for his New York directing work including Sunset Boulevard, Sweeney Todd, Company, and Sondheim! The Birthday Concert. His early career was spent performing in Off-Broadway productions, including Class Enemy in 1979, for which he won a Theater World Award for a stage debut. You’re probably used to hearing the phrase “triple threat” when talking about Actor/Singer/Dancers. You’ve probably never heard of the phrase used to describe Actor/Writer/Directors. You know why? Because there are so few of them. Listen to Lonny talk about his triple threatness, as well as . . . What it was like working with his heroes Hal Prince and Stephen Sondheim on Merrily We Roll Along, and why he’ll never direct it himself. What he thinks is the most important skill to have as a director. Gossip alert! Is his production of Sunset Boulevard with Glenn Close on its way to Broadway? Or not??? Why he’s not intimidated by big stars. (And he has worked with the biggest.) Why he believes every stage production should be filmed and preserved. Lonny is one of those people that was destined for a success in our biz. The theater and how it works is just part of his DNA, which is why he has been able to be such a success in so many different areas. Thankfully he was generous enough to talk to me (with or without being strapped into a chair) so we can all soak up his secrets. One of the most celebrated voices of our era meets one of the most distinctive voices of an earlier era. Audra McDonald, the five-time Tony-winning singer and actress, becomes the latest performer to channel Billie Holiday in the Broadway revival of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill at Circle in the Square Theater. Written by Lanie Robertson and directed by Lonny Price, we see Holiday performing at a Philadelphia nightclub just a few months before her death in 1959. Tony Award winning actress Randy Graff talks about her role as Meg Boyd in the current Encores! revival of "Damn Yankees", including what she learned from reading the novel on which the show is based and what she thinks of the enhanced intimacy between her character and the youthful Joe Hardy. She also talks about one of her earliest Broadway experiences, in the little-remembered flop "Sarava!"; the rehearsal process for the U.S. production of "Les Miserables", in which she was the original Fantine, as well as why she doesn't like to hear herself on the "Les Miz" cast album; how her show-stopping song in "City of Angels" came together; her experiences working with comedy legends Neil Simon and Carol Burnett on "Laughter on the 23rd Floor" and "Moon Over Buffalo"; how she felt about the change of director and choreographer midway through "High Society"; what it was like to be directed by and play opposite her close friend Lonny Price in "A Class Act"; and her special feelings for "Fiddler on the Roof". Original air date - July 25, 2008.

Bonus Episode #2: Yes, it's another "very special episode" - a song... well, songs really... that are NOT in the songbook. None of my upcoming guest stars were available to record this week, so I'm taking this opportunity to tell you about a wonderful organization called Raw Impressions, which brings random artistic people together to accomplish some specific creative endeavor unreasonably quickly. My first involvement with R.I. was last spring when I participated in RIPFest #6, a 16 day event during which seven short movie musicals were conceived, written, recorded, shot, edited, couriered cross-country, and screened in NY and LA. "WHAT??" you say? It's true, it's all true. You can't believe it until you've lived it. Freefall is the name of the RIPFest film for which I wrote the songs. The Freefall experience was heaven, start to finish, even amidst all the craziness. The stars were aligned when our team was assembled: the creators were Lonny Price-director , David Simpatico-screenwriter, Jessica Hendricks-choreographer, and myself-songwriter. Our amazing cast included Becca Ayers, Joe Cassidy, Jessica Grové, and David Perlman. And our producers were the wonderful Jane Abramson and Laura Penney. These songs were recorded 5/11/05, with Jeff Greenwald on drums, Randy Landau on bass, Peter Sachon on cello, Gary Sieger on guitar, and myself on piano. RIPFest was such a great experience that I'm taking the plunge again this coming week, albeit in a different genre. This time it's Raw Impressions Music Theatre #20, which means we're creating short musicals (to be performed live, not on film) and we only have ten days to do it! Come check out our performances on March 26 and 27! Also, don't miss Jessica Grové in the upcoming musical Iron Curtain (April 8-30, West End Theater) and Becca Ayers in the title role of Sarah, Plain and Tall (March 19-April 30, Lucille Lortel Theater). Clockwise from top left: Becca Ayers, Joe Cassidy, Jessica Grové, David Perlman
