When an art song and opera composer writes a memoir, what does that process look like? Does mastery in one creative realm translate to another? How is an aria like a story? I just loved this deep and passionate conversation with Ricky Ian Gordon, author of the new memoir SEEING THROUGH: A Chronicle of Sex, Drugs, and Opera. Ricky Ian Gordon was born in Oceanside, NY and raised on Long Island. After studying piano, composition, and acting, at Carnegie Mellon University, he settled in New York City, where he quickly emerged as a leading writer of vocal music that spans art song, opera, and musical theater. Gordon's songs have been performed and recorded by Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, Nathan Gunn, Judy Collins, Kelli O'Hara, Audra MacDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, and many others. His works include Dream True, Orpheus and Euridice, Green Sneakers for Baritone, String Quartet, Empty Chair, and Piano, The Grapes of Wrath, and Intimate Apparel. His memoir SEEING THROUGH: A Chronicle of Sex, Drugs, and Opera was published in July 2024. Check out the book here or follow Ricky at his website, or @rickyiangordon on X and Instagram. They said I wasn't smart enough to go to college. I was told that I should go to trade school and become a key-punch operator – does anyone even know any key-punch operators? When I quit my first job, a member of my family was sure that no one would ever hire me.Well, I'm here to tell you that persistence, drive, and creativity win.I am more than fourth generation retail. After joining my mother's lingerie business, I learned to guess bra sizes, got certified as a mastectomy fitter, and learned how to tailor bras. Following her passing, I saw a product and thought – “I can do better than that.” Crazy as it sounds, I went on a hike and happened to meet a design engineer. He introduced me to a patent attorney. I took everything I had and, with his help, got the patent for Bezi® Bra Discs as well as my first prototype mold.Wholesale to small stores was great, but, I wanted more and have spent years learning about funnels, website building, CRM, customer retention management, as well as workflows, marketing, and social media. From learning to type on an electric typewriter to the computer. Wow, what a journey.Yes, I am here to tell you that anything is possible – even for those of us who others thought could never succeed. Today we head to Brighton, Mi to talk to Lisa Nelson, founder and owner of Hush Intimate Apparel - we walk through the good and sometimes daunting task of starting and owning a business, how she moved from the corporate world to entrepreneurship, and how that move opened up endless possibilities for her.
At the start of this year, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage achieved a feat. Three of her works—Clyde's, the musical MJ, and an opera adaptation of her play Intimate Apparel—were playing on New York City stages simultaneously. But three decades ago, during the height of the AIDS and crack epidemics, Lynn almost stopped writing plays for good. "I was watching many of my classmates and my professors get sick and die or succumb to drug addiction," she told me about her time at drama school. "And it was really hard to stay focused on writing and figure out, well, why am I writing? And what is it that I want to write about when there's so much trauma?" Lynn grew up in Brooklyn, where she now lives in her childhood home. She spoke with me from her living room about how bombing a test in college led her to theater, how quitting her day job and cashing in her 401(k) helped her return to it, and how she shares "marriage miles" with her filmmaker husband.
Tune in for the answer. (We also talk about “Swept Away,” “The Music Man,” and “Intimate Apparel.”

The topics of discussion range from the intimate to the revealing as the changes from play to opera are considered, Viola Davis' voice is appraised, and Joshua takes his first stab at discussing costumes. They talk about the play, African-American involvement in local theatre, cannabis edibles and kids, Sarah Palin v. the NY Times, trucker convoys, the gaspacho-eating Gestapo, and their favorite African-American actresses.

With a cast as stacked as Audra is pregnant, our co-hosts thrill in the delights of 20s musical theatre and share the Broadway Buzz as they regard the dual position of director/author, plot out the perfect future for Shuffle Along, and Affectionate Dan himself bravely shares his Adrienne Warren non-experience. Set in 1905 in turn of the century New York, Lynn Nottage's play, "Intimate Apparel," tells the story of Esther, an African-American woman who makes her living sewing beautiful corsets and ladies' undergarments. The Lincoln Center Theater opera features music by Ricky Ian Gordon, that forefronts voices ignored by history. Gordon, actress Kearstin Piper Brown (Esther), and director Bartlett Sher join us to talk about the show.
Lynn Nottage is a two time Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, and the first and only woman to win the category twice, for “Ruined” and “Sweat”. She's a screenwriter, a Tony nominee, a producer, the recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant fellowship and was included in Time magazine's 2019 list of the 100 Most Influential People. Lynn's work can currently be found on 2 different Broadway stages: “Intimate Apparel” the opera at Lincoln Center Theater (Libretto), and “MJ” a new Broadway musical at the Neil Simon Theater (Libretto). She's an activist working with the Art for Justice Fund, among others, and is an associate professor of playwriting at Columbia University. Lynn opens up about one of her main reasons for going into teaching, noting the importance of nurturing and mentorships, and being invested in the success of her students, particularly her students of color. She talks about getting involved with the Art for Justice Fund specially through her play “Clyde's”, a not for profit invested in how art can be used to help people who are incarcerated or formerly incarcerated tell their stories and “transcend their circumstances”. Lynn also chats about one of her newest projects, the new opera “Intimate Apparel”, and why it's considered a brand new show rather than a revival. In this episode, we talk about: Almost becoming a journalist instead of a playwright Researching and conducting interviews for her plays Creating Broadway industry internships through the Art for Justice Fund Reimagining her great grandmother's life to write Intimate Apparel Working on MJ the Musical Connect with Lynn Twitter: @Lynnbrooklyn IG: @lynnnottage Web: http://www.lynnnottage.com Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Fashion #4 of 4. Underwear, the unseen garments which sit in close proximity to genitals, skin, and all sorts of unmentionable orifices, are the most poorly-documented garments in history yet they shaped bodies, minds, and societies in complex and interesting ways. Sometimes we do really tight, analytical episodes. This is not one of those episodes. The history of underwear does not lend itself to that kind of treatment. It’s long, uneven, and extremely hard to get at because of poor documentation. So get ready for a wild and rambling adventure. Today we take on the global history of underwear from 3,000 BCE to the 20th century. Find show notes and transcripts here. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week we are joined by Riley Silverman to discuss A Song For The Soul. We spend more than a little time lamenting how long ago the 90s were. Also, why is Sam such a bad singer in this episode? He has a doctorate in music! And Riley wants to know WHO Sam is talking to in those voiceovers. We get an appearance from a baby-faced Eric La Salle, which prompts some discussion about how E.R. is responsible for Rachel's irrational helicopter phobia. That show got NUTS. Can 15 year olds legally sign contracts? Can they really get the head of Decca Records on the phone? Let us know what you think! Check out Riley's writing on http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/fangrrls and listen to her jokes on the International Waters podcast and her album Intimate Apparel. November 10, 2017 - Labor and Love - We bring our latest episode of World of the Play, our partnership with Everyman Theatre. This performance conversation is inspired by the latest production at Everyman, Intimate Apparel by MacArthur Genius and Pulitzer Prize award winning playwright Lynn Nottage. Joining the panel today are fashion designer Stephen Wise, Valeska Populoh, and GG Goba.
It's Thursday, and that means theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins Tom with her weekly review of one of the region's many thespian offerings. Today, she talks about Everyman Theatre's new production of Intimate Apparel, a play that premiered in 2003 at Baltimore's Center Stage. It's a contemporary work written in classic style by Lynn Nottage, the first female playwright to win two Pulitzers. Inspired by a true story, Intimate Apparel centers on Esther (played by Dawn Ursula), a self-employed African American seamstress in turn-of-the-century New York who is working hard - and saving her money - making beautiful undergarments for her well-to-do clientele. But she dreams of a grander life, while nurturing her romantic relationship with a Jewish fabric merchant (played by Drew Kopas). As an emotionally wrenching turn of events puts Esther’s dreams at risk, the play explores the tenacity of the human spirit against the powerful pressures of class, race and culture. The play is directed by Tazewell Thompson.Intimate Apparel continues at Everyman Theatre through Sunday, November 19th.

A half dozen actors run through a scene in one of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's rehearsal rooms. The setting is a bar in Reading, Pennsylvania, after the financial crises. A group of steelworkers are talking about the factory that locked them out.“This is the first time I've been out of my apartment in a week,” reads actor Terri McMahon. “Do you know what it's like to get up and have no place to go? I am a worker. I've worked since I could count money. That's me!”And writing plays about work, and how our work defines who we are, is very much in tune with Lynn Nottage, who has won just about every honor a playwright can win: Pulitzer, Macarthur, Guggenheim awards. There's the seamstress in her best known work, “Intimate Apparel,” who expresses herself through fabric. There's the high-powered African American publicist in “Fabulation,” who loses her money and must return to her working-class roots. And there are the Congolese women in Nottage's Pulitzer-winning play, “Ruined,” who have survived horrendous war crimes, only to have to make their living in a brothel. And “Sweat,” which opens on August 2 and runs through October 31, explores America's de-industrialization, asking what happens when the jobs we measure ourselves and our community by disappear. “With this play, I think Lynn is following in the footsteps of Arthur Miller's ‘The Death of a Salesman' or (Clifford) Odet's ‘Paradise Lost,'” says the play's director, Kate Whoriskey, who has worked with Nottage on several plays over the past 15 years. “She's really exploring the new economic paradigm and how it affects ourselves as individuals and the community.”
Comedian Rye Silverman (@ryesilverman) joins Jesse, Andy and eventually Matt to discuss the legendary Marty & Elayne, trans facts, the Riddick man, how to spot a ghost, Andy's Lasik surgery, Rye as ModCloth's first transgender model, the origins of life on earth, fracking and earthquakes, Yellowstone magma, Bitcoin vulnerablility, a shapeshifting frog, a catfish that looks like Greedo and Rye's new album Intimate Apparel.
The Dueling Critics get intimate with Lynn Nottage's play at Eclipse Theatre.
Richard Linklater's latest film, Boyhood, was filmed over 39 days over a period of 12 years, so the actors and characters on the screen age in real time. When production began, the lead actor was 6 and it follows him dealing with life's ups and downs as he progresses towards adulthood. Linda Grant's new novel Upstairs At The Party is the tale of a group of friends at a northern university in the 1970s and how their lives are changed by a personal catastrophe Intimate Apparel is a play by African American playwright Lynn Nottage at London's Park Theatre. Set in 1905, it tells the story of Esther, a 35-year old African American seamstress who moved from North Carolina to New York City to seek her fortune and her relationships with the city's upper crust and lowlife alike. BBC 3's People Just Do Nothing is a comedy set in a London pirate radio station and its cheerfully deluded team of enthusiastic idiots. A new exhibition at SOAS in London chronicles the role of Sikh soldiers in The First World War. Indian soldiers made up one-in-six of the ranks of the British Empire forces, but their role has now been largely forgotten. Sarfraz Manzoor is joined by Cahal Dallat, Louise Doughty and Antonia Quirke. The producer is Oliver Jones.
