Dori talks with writer and music storyteller Piotr Orlov, exploring themes of identity, the immigrant experience, and the transformative power of community. Piotr, whose grandmother was a classical musicologist and father, a prominent, American basketball-loving sportswriter, came here from Leningrad to New York at 7-3/4 years old, fully bought into the American Dream story. He shares how his cultural background shapes his perspective and how that lens has changed over time. His first, indelible (and timely!) New York City memory proves how the truth we see isn't always THE truth. The discussion delves into the significance of community in music, the challenges of building new institutions when the ones that formed us are no longer sustainable...or relevant, and the legacy we leave through our stories.Piotr's writing has appeared in New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and the Village Voice. He was director of special projects at AFROPUNK, senior editor at NPR Music, and editorial director at MTV. He helped produce the Red Bull Music Academy in New York. He is an adjunct teacher of writing and history at NYU's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music and at Columbia University. Peter is also the founder of Dada Strain, a platform grounded in rhythm, improvisation, and community. Maggie speaks with Grammy-winning music historian, journalist, producer, and educator Ashley Kahn about Evenings At The Village Gate: John Coltrane With Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. In 1961, the John Coltrane Quintet played an engagement at the legendary Village Gate in Greenwich Village, New York. Coltrane's Classic Quartet was not as fully established as it would soon become and there was a meteoric fifth member of Coltrane's group those nights— visionary multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy. Ninety minutes of never-before-heard music from this group were recently discovered at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, offering a glimpse into a powerful musical partnership that ended much too soon. In addition to some well-known Coltrane material (“My Favorite Things”, “Impressions”, “Greensleeves”), there is a breathtaking feature for Dolphy's bass clarinet on “When Lights Are Low” and the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane's composition “Africa”, from the Africa/Brass album. This recording represents a very special moment in John Coltrane's journey—the summer of 1961—when his signature, ecstatic live sound, commonly associated his Classic Quartet of '62 to '65, was first maturing and when he was drawing inspiration from deep, African sources— and experimenting with the two-bass idea both in the studio (Olé) and on stage. This truly rare recording of "Africa" captures his expansive vision at the time.Ashley Kahn is a Grammy-winning American music historian, journalist, producer, and professor. He teaches at New York University's Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music, and has written books on two legendary recordings—Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and A Love Supreme by John Coltrane—as well as one book on a legendary record label: The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records. He also co-authored the Carlos Santana autobiography The Universal Tone, and edited Rolling Stone: The Seventies, a 70-essay overview of that pivotal decade. His latest book is entitled George Harrison on George Harrison: Interviews and Encounters. With leagues of experience operating across the Detroit and NYC scenes, Rimarkable is known for her unwavering knowledge of where electronic music comes from and where it is going. As a first generation Puerto Rican, the Afro-Latin sound continues to have a huge impact on her sonic leanings, alongside the unmistakable ear training of the city's techno legacy. Growing up heavily influenced by Black gospel music, her selections as a DJ, producer and broadcaster bring together a wider understanding of funk, jazz, rock, gospel and soul that is unlike any other in the biz... Rimarkable started professionally DJing in 1997, first doing private events and then clubs in the early 2000s. She started producing in 2006, after she grew tired of male producers either not understanding how she wanted to sound, or luring her into the studio to hang out, then asking her to freestyle on the mic, while hitting ‘record' and releasing music without her consent. A multi-hyphenate musician who has found various creative outlets over the years, Rimarkable believes in DJing and producing as a spiritual practice, exploring alchemy through the DJ art form as well as African spiritualism, healing, mental health and self- care. It's a philosophy that eventually manifested as a lecture and classroom series called ‘The Alchemy of DJing', a means for her to creatively engage in social justice, and empower women and youth. It's taken her to various cities such as Nairobi and Berlin, and US institutions such as Yale and Queens Museum, and now has landed her as an Adjunct Professor at NYU-Tisch in the Clive Davis Institute, where she teaches the younger minds this sacred art of alchemy of the DJ. Quite literally a party starter, she's produced an abundance of successful, long-running nightlife events in NYC, SF Bay Area, Detroit, and beyond over the past 20 years. Rimarkable has been signed to UK house music institution Defected since 2021 including the Defected Music publishing arm, and stepped up as a presenter for the weekly Defected Radio show. 2023 is Rimarkable's year for new releases but 2022 did not go a miss, as she hopped in the Studio with Honey Dijon to write and perform for Honey's latest album ‘Black Girl Magic'. Recorded on April 28, 2023 in Long Island City, Queens NY. Hosted & produced by Mari Ella. Martin's dream from 1963. And Kendrick's dream from 2012 in his song Backseat Freestyle. The song makes you think about Martin's dream through the lens of Kendrick Lamar. Both dreams talk about equal access to power. And in the Black community it's always been a great divide on how to access power. Some Black people follow the vision and direction of MLK: “new laws, love, determination, and community…” It's a collective change. But on the flip side, some Black people follow the dream of Kendrick: “acquiring as much money, and material things which is power in the U.S. It's an individual change. They both clearly have a different approach, style and swag. BUT is either perspective wrong? Is Kendrick simply stating what America truly values as power? Is Dr King's dream attainable? or something to one day live for? Do we NEED both perspectives? Outside of the song and speech are these men the same? Contrary to popular belief, all Black people are not the same. We are not a monolith. And unfortunately, monolithic thinking goes beyond just what society thinks of Black people. It also shows up in the way the Black people treat one another. How do we challenge our subconscious thinking and celebrate Black people and their glorious differences, perspectives, backgrounds, etc? Do we need to educate our peers, friends, and family more? Do we need to look at how class may play a role? OR do we simply say ‘f@ck it' and stop fighting the normativity standard and just be ourselves? Hosted by: VP/ Director of Growth Strategy, Reonna Johnson, featured guests in this episode include: Fine Arts Professor/Actor, Damian Lewis Actress, Julanne Chidi Hill Film Director, Justin Polk Art Director, Lauryn Alvarez Creative Director, Tahirah Edwards-Byfield Producer, Sydni Chustz Executive Music Producer, Carol Dunn Strategist, Olivia Campbell In addition, Glenn Singleton, author, thought leader, strategist, and creator of Courageous Conversation®, joined the conversation to let us know our responsibility as Black people to dismantle the term - ‘regular Black.' Welcome DAN CHARNAS! His latest book - Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, The Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm (2022) - is a New York Times Bestseller. Award-winning music and business journalist, author of four books, producer of records and television. Associate Arts Professor at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU. In the 1980's, Dan was part of the opening team at The Source magazine, in the 1990's he worked A&R for Rick Rubin at American Recordings. 3:00 - The Upful Update 9:30 - introducing DAN CHARNAS & Dilla Time 17:45 - INTERVIEW (102min) The product of four years of research and nearly 200 interviews, Dilla Time emerged from a course on J Dilla developed by Charnas at NYU in 2017, but its roots go back to Charnas's time in the record business, when he first made the trip to Detroit to work with the producer then known as Jay Dee. A huge fan of both Dilla & this expansive book, I'd been waiting since Feb.2022 to speak with Dan about this project, his process, & the Church of Dilla. I've been through the 430-page tome twice, listened to him on numerous podcasts in preparation for this conversation, still Dan was kind enough to give me nearly 100 minutes of his time and thoughtfully answered each inquiry with intention. This topic was so wide-ranging and engrossing that we didn't have the time to get into his long, colorful career path, we stuck exclusively to Mr. Yancey. As a music journalist and lifetime hip-hop head, Dan Charnas is nothing short of a North Star to me; as such it was an honor, privilege, and educational exercise to host him on Episode 062 of The Upful LIFE Podcast. For this week's B-Side, DJ Louie is joined by Chair of the The Clive Institute of Recorded Music, Jason King, to talk the history, culture, ethos and aesthetics of disco music. Louie and Jason lay out the elements of a disco song, what the word meant as a cultural movement, its roots as a queer black artform and unique platform for black women's voices, what made the “disco diva”, the genre's trajectory through the 1970s as a fast burning phenomenon that crashed just as quickly by the turn of the 1980s and the key artists, songs and moments of its prime years. This Sunday, July 10, is the tenth anniversary of Frank Ocean's debut studio album, channel ORANGE. The Grammy award-winning album can be found on many lists recapping the best projects of the 2010's and is highly influential in modern R&B today, on top of Ocean also being a popular, yet simultaneously mysterious celebrity figure. With us to talk about the music on the album, its initial popularity, and how its influence can continue to be seen today, is Jason King, chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU, and Ryan Dombal, features editor for Pitchfork who wrote the review of channel ORANGE back in 2012. Plus, we take your calls. *This segment is guest-hosted by Kerry Nolan.
The world stops with a Beyoncé drop. On Monday, June 20th, our prayers were answered with “Break My Soul,” the lead single off of her upcoming album, Renaissance. The song draws from several places of inspiration: lyrically, it's a cathartic dance-floor ode to liberation, soundtracking the current cultural moment that some have called the “Great Resignation.” Sonically, though, “Break My Soul” is Beyoncé's foray into house music – a genre that the chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, Jason King, summarizes as “a highly rhythmic dance music created by mostly Black and brown artists in the late 1970s and early 1980s,” propelled by a fanbase of queer and trans communities of color. There's been an undeniable buzz that Beyoncé is “bringing house music back.” And from Charli XCX to Drake, it does feel like house music is currently having a moment in mainstream pop music, paralleling the original rise of the subculture from the ruins of disco. But the genre “has always been here,” in King's words, and has decades of history. In this episode of Switched On Pop, we unpack house music – and how Beyoncé's “Break My Soul” fits into the genre. Songs Discussed Beyoncé - “BREAK MY SOUL” Beyoncé - “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” Drake - “Falling Back” Thelma Houston - “Don't Leave Me This Way” Robin S - “Show Me Love” Bob Sinclair, Steve Edwards - “World Hold On (Children of the sky)” Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj - “Swish Swish” Charli XCX - “Used To Know Me” Livin' Joy - “Don't Stop Movin'” Mr. Fingers - “Can You Feel It” Madonna - “Vogue” Black Box - “Ride on Time” CeCe Peniston - “Finally” Aqua - “Barbie Girl” Big Freedia - “Explode” Beyoncé - “Formation” Drake - “Nice For What” Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers - “Get Lucky” Destiny's Child - “Say My Name - Maurice's Last Days Of Disco Millennium Mix” Beyoncè - “FIND YOUR WAY BACK” Madonna - “Deeper and Deeper” Janet Jackson - “Together Again” C & C Music Factory - “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” Learn more about your ad choices. Maggie LePique speaks with celebrating author, and educator Ashley Khan about the enduring legacy of George Harrison, a British guitarist, singer, songwriter and film producer. As a member of the Beatles, he achieved international fame and renown. During his career, he developed as a songwriter in his own right and wrote many best selling songs. In addition to music, Harrison was interested in Hindu spirituality and was a devotee of the Hare Krishna movement. George also founded the Material World Charitable Foundation, or MWF, on 26 April 1973, close to two years after he had organised the Concert for Bangladesh in New York as a benefit for refugees of the Bangladesh Liberation War. MWF is still active and Olivia Harrison (George's widow) is Director of the Charitable Organization. My guest Ashley Kahn, is a Grammy-winning author, educator, music journalist, and concert producer. His books include A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album and Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece. He teaches at New York University's Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music.Ashley also edited the book: George Harrison on George Harrison is an authoritative, chronologically arranged anthology of Harrison's most revealing and illuminating interviews, personal correspondence, and writings, spanning the years 1962 to 2001. Though known as the “Quiet Beatle,” Harrison was arguably the most thoughtful and certainly the most outspoken of the famous four. This compendium of his words and ideas proves that point repeatedly, revealing his passion for music, his focus on spirituality, and his responsibility as a celebrity, as well as a sense of deep commitment and humor.Source: https://tisch.nyu.edu/about/directory/clive-davis-institute/1417614318Source: https://www.materialworldfoundation.comSource: https://www.amazon.com/George-Harrison-Interviews-Encounters-Musicians/dp/1641600519This episode is from an archive from the KPFK program Profiles adapted for podcast.Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. He has a new book out called Music, Lyrics, and Life: A Field Guide for the Advancing Songwriter. This is the songwriting class you always wish you'd taken, taught by the professor you always wish you'd had. "Music, Lyrics, and Life: A Field Guide For The Advancing Songwriter" takes a deep dive into the heart of questions asked by songwriters of all levels, from how to begin journaling to when you know that a song is finished. With humor and empathy, Mike Errico unravels both the mystery of songwriting and the logistics of life as a songwriter. For years, this set of tools, prompts, and ideas has inspired students on campuses including Yale, Wesleyan, Berklee, Oberlin, and NYU's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.Alongside his own lessons, Errico interviews the writers, producers, and A&R executives behind today's biggest hits and investigates the larger questions of creativity through lively conversations with a wide range of innovative thinkers: astrophysicist Janna Levin explains the importance of repetition, both in choruses and in the exploration of the universe; renowned painter John Currin praises the constraints of form, whether it's within a right-angled canvas or a three-minute pop song; bestselling author George Saunders unpacks the hidden benefit of writing, and revising, authentically; and much more. The result is that “Music, Lyrics, and Life” ends up revealing as much about the art of songwriting as it does about who we are, and where we may be going. This is a book for songwriters, future content creators, music lovers, and anyone who wants to understand how popular art forms are able to touch us so deeply. Mike Errico has honed these lessons over years of writing, performing, teaching, and mentoring, and no matter where you are on your songwriting journey, “Music, Lyrics, and Life” will help you build a creative world that's both intrinsic to who you are, and undeniable to whoever is listening.New York-based recording artist, writer, and lecturing professor Mike Errico has built his name on the strength of critically acclaimed releases and extensive composition for film and TV. We had the pleasure of interviewing Charlie Houston over Zoom video! Each song from 19-year old artist Charlie Houston is an emotional timecapsule with relatable self-discovery storytelling and breathy, androgynous vocals evoking the captivating immediancy of contemporaries, Empress Of, King Princess, Faye Webster and Charlotte Day Wilson. Freshly signed to Arts & Crafts, the genre-bending artist has recently released her debut I Hate Spring EP. Though Charlie‘s studies at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU was short-lived due to a bout with severe anxiety, that period inspired two standout EP singles: “19,” a track about managing those mental health struggles with reckless behaviour, and “Calls,” a song about the unwanted dissolution of a long distance relationship. Throughout the collection, Charlie bravely bares her personal struggles such as mental health issues, romantic heartbreak, first kisses and discovering the fluidity of her sexual identity along the way. Working with producer Chris Yonge, I Hate Spring features five downtempo pop tracks infusing progressive electronic sounds with raw, melodic guitar and pop-R&B vocals. The poetic lyrics intentionally do not include pronouns because the beautifully crafted stories are authentically relatable to any listener. We want to hear from you! Host Emily White had the privilege of interviewing Bon Iver's Justin Vernon for her students at New York University's Clive Davis Institute prior to the pandemic. White realized this conversation perfectly brought to life Chapter 1 of How to Build a Sustainable Music Career and Collect All Revenue Streams - Get Your Art Together. Bon Iver's management kindly gave their blessing to share this interview in podcast form. White feels that anyone can achieve this book's and podcast's title. However the art must be great to do so. As artists and industry folks, it's natural to get caught up with what happens after music is made (marketing, distribution, etc.). However one will not be successful if the art isn't great. So much so that White is constantly reminding those in her profession of Chapter 1's title - Get Your Art Together. And why one shouldn't move on until they know they are "ripe" and ready to record, ensuring their songs, players, and vision are truly in the best place possible while creating from one's heart and soul. We hope you enjoy this very special interview with Justin Vernon by Emily and her students. Happy listening! Questions? Reach out to @EmWizzle on Twitter. Gerald’s extraordinary memoir cuts a swath through a dizzying number of socio-cultural sectors, enacting an American dream that questions the very assumptions behind it. Growing up in Dallas, Gerald was immersed in his grandfather’s evangelical church, a source of stability when his mother’s disability checks could barely support the family. When he was recruited to play football for Yale, Gerald’s life changed. But as he moved up, earning a Harvard MBA, he was shocked by the disparity between his old life and his new one. Writing with force and eloquence, humor and outrage, he questions the meanings of power and success, illuminating the ideals that caused his Harvard Business School commencement speech to go viral and made him, at barely thirty, one of Fast Company’s “Most Creative People in Business.”Gerald is in conversation with Dr. Matthew D. Morrison, Assistant Professor in the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and former Editor-in-Chief of the music journal Current Musicology.https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9780735214200Learn more about your ad choices. The upward trajectory of R&B singer/composer/producer Daniel Bazán, Jr. is undeniable. An alumnus of NYU's acclaimed Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. Check! Profile in JAY Z’s Life + Times magazine. Check! Performances at SOB's and Pianos in New York City. Check! These exciting milestones are merely the evidence of hard work and talent from this Queens native. Raised in the Dominican Republic, Daniel started playing the piano at the age of eleven which led to him defining his craft in churches, schools and cultural centers before a return to his birthplace. Eventual forays into jazz and hip-hop were integral stepping stones to the artist he is today. After a recent rebranding, Daniel is crafting a new chapter that finds his music style more soulful with an underpinning of jazz chops. His recently released demo "Wrong For You" is a glorious example. In addition to music, Daniel's also a distinctive photographer with a beautifully-curated and well-respected Instagram account. Daniel Bazán, Jr. is definitely One to Watch! Visit Daniel Bazán, Jr. online: http://danielbazanjr.com/ https://instagram.com/danielbazanjr/ Talk Music Talk Playlist:In an off-air conversation with Daniel, he discussed his admiration of jazz pianist/composer Robert Glasper. As with previous TMT guest, Indian Soul progenitor Shilpa Ananth (Episode #38: http://traffic.libsyn.com/talkmusictalk/durastar_150804b_shilpa_ananth.mp3), they both appreciate Glasper's seamless melding of jazz and soul music. It's a compilation of my favorite Glasper tracks from his two Black Rock projects featuring vocals from Erykah Badu, Norah Jones and more.
