When Peggy O’Neal AO emigrated from the United States to Australia in 1991, she had no idea she was about to fall in love with a community and a game that would shape her new life. Perhaps it was fate that she moved to Richmond in Melbourne’s east, donned the local team’s footy jumper, and learnt about footy tipping – all moments that would eventually lead her to become the first woman in AFL history to serve as a club president at the Richmond Tigers. Peggy, who is a superannuation and financial lawyer, broke that glass ceiling but admits there is much more to do and says being deliberate in striving for gender equality in leadership is always front of mind. While sport is one of her passions, education is another – values instilled in her by her parents when she was a child – and she now gives back as Chancellor of RMIT University, and you heard it here first, Peggy is writing a children’s book! Our next guest was last on the show in 2010, and we're welcoming him back to talk about some absolutely beautiful new music. Musician and composer Kevin Williams joins me to talk about his recent release, “Ways to Break a Window,” an 11-track album of instrumental music that is incredibly layered with different sounds and effects. Kevin talks about the inspiration behind the album, which is a return of sorts to him producing his own music. He shares the story behind the sounds and how he got to experiment with different techniques during the production process. And of course, he tells us about the cool story behind the album's name. Closing out this interview is the song, “Bulbous Intent,” and I highly recommend listening to the entire album.

Join Ocean House owner and author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with author Patricia Chadwick about her new book, Breaking Glass. About Patricia Chadwick: Patricia Walsh Chadwick was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1948. She received her BA in Economics from Boston University and had a thirty-year career in the investment business, culminating as a Global Partner at Invesco. Today she sits on a number of corporate boards, and she blogs on issues social, economic, and political. She also mentors middle school girls at Our Lady Queen of Angels School in Harlem. In 2016, she founded and is the CEO of Anchor Health Initiative, a health care company that serves the needs of the LGBTQ community in Connecticut. She is married and lives in Connecticut with her husband. They have a daughter and a son. About Breaking Glass: Kicked out of a cult at seventeen, Patricia Walsh Chadwick started on the bottom rung of the ladder in the world of business and worked her way to the top—breaking through the glass ceiling to become a global partner at Invesco. Patricia grew up in a religious community-turned-cult in the Boston area. At the age of seventeen, she was forced out of her home, leaving behind her entire family, and without access to higher education. From her first job as a receptionist at a brokerage firm, she clawed her way up the ladder—rung by rung—in that bastion of male chauvinism: Wall Street. By going to college at night, she achieved her degree in economics from Boston University, and from there, she headed to New York City. With a drive that earned her the moniker “Witch of Wall Street,” she rose from the ranks of research analyst to portfolio manager, where she was responsible for billions of dollars in pension and endowment assets. A turning point in her life was giving birth to twins at the age of forty-five, and she continued forward in her career, becoming a global partner at Invesco. At the turn of the millennium, she left Wall Street behind and embarked on a second career as a corporate board director. For more information about Patricia Chadwick, visit patriciachadwick.com. Patricia spent her childhood growing up in a cult with very strict rules surrounding interactions with her family and the outside world. She was then kicked out of the cult at a very young age and left with nothing. She started at the bottom rung of the ladder and eventually rose to the highest levels within Wall Street. Her story is documented through her two fantastic books, "Little Sister" and "Breaking Glass: Tales from the Witch of Wall Street". Patricia's story is absolutely incredible! We talk to her life about growing up in the cult and her rise up the corporate ladder within Wall Street.
Send us a textOn this episode, we have a listener pick: Nick Lowe and his 1994 album The Impossible Bird. Nick Lowe has been a topic of conversation several times on This Is Vinyl Tap due to the indelible mark the man has left on pop music. Lowe was a bass player, singer and songwriter of the influential pub rock band Brinsley Schwarz. He was a member of the the fabulous Rockpile. He is a producer of some note, having worked with countless artists including Elvis Costello, the Pretenders, Graham Parker, and the Damned. And he is one hell of a song writer, penning such timeless tunes as "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding," "Cruel to be Kind," "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass," and "The Beast In Me."Having found himself is a but of a rough creative patch in the late 1980's, his luck changed withe the success "The Bodyguard" soundtrack, which included a cover of "Peace, Love, and Understanding." That gave Lowe the financial freedom to pursue new musical directions and the music buying public were much the richer for it. The Impossible Bird was a bit of a reboot for Lowe and a different kind of Nick Lowe album; more mature and stripped down, with his vocals front and center. It was not quite country, not quite rockabilly, not quite folk, but a flawless combinations of all of the above. Its a collection of choice covers and fantastic Lowe originals expertly executed by a crack band and easily one of Lowe's finest musical statements that includes some of his most endearing and enduring songs. In BREAKING GLASS: Tales from the Witch of Wall Street, Patricia Walsh Chadwick continues to tell the story of her bizarre upbringing that she began in her 2019 memoir, Little Sister. In this coming-of-age follow-up, she revisits her childhood through a different lens, offering insights into how the experiences of her early life shaped her character and helped her forge her path in business and finance.,From the tender age of six through her high school years, Patricia was raised in The Center, an isolated, rural community of 100 members, including 39 children, led by Leonard Feeney, an excommunicated Jesuit priest, and managed with an iron fist by his spiritual alter ego, Catherine Clarke. Together, they created a monastic environment that demanded obedience, silence, chastity, and detachment from family, achieved by separating parents from their children and forbidding members to read newspapers, watch television, listen to the radio, or communicate with outsiders. Patricia defied Sister Catherine's mission to mold her into a compliant, submissive nun. At 17, in the middle of the turbulent 1960s, she was expelled from her home in Still River, Massachusetts, without a hint of how to survive, much less thrive, in an unfamiliar and frightening world. Yet thrive she did. In 1966, Patricia began her new life in secretarial school, where she excelled at typing and shorthand but struggled to navigate social cues and casual conversation. She set her sights on building a career in finance, a hard-charging field ruled by men. Our guest, Patricia Walsh Chadwick, has led one heckuva remarkable life. Plus, she is one of our own—a proud and feisty Baby Boomer. Her early years, however, were anything but feisty as she grew up in a secluded, Catholic, cult-like group consisting of 100 inhabitants (39 of them who were children.) Although she was reared to become obedient, selfless, and subservient, Patricia left the group at the tender age of seventeen to create the life she wanted.
