The chemical industry is big business in Louisiana. Companies here manufacture plastics, fuels, pesticides, and cleaning products. But one part of the chemical industry that's often overlooked is the fertilizer business. Today, you're going to hear the story of modern fertilizer, and how this powerful concoction of chemicals has radically reshaped how we farm and what we eat. In this episode, we follow the journey of fertilizer from Louisiana to the Midwest, then back down along the Mississippi River to a place it creates in the Gulf. A place called: The Dead Zone. This episode was produced in collaboration with the Food & Environment Reporting Network, an independent, nonprofit news organization. We also had support from the Mississippi River Basin Ag and Water Desk. This episode was hosted by Carlyle Calhoun and reported by Garrett Hazelwood and Eric Schmid. This episode was edited by Eve Abrams. Additional help from Carlyle Calhoun, Eva Tesfaye, Ryan Vasquez, Ted Ross, and Brent Cunningham. The episode was fact-checked by Naomi Barr. Janice's husband, 41-year-old Norman Lillie, needs her help collecting back rent from their tenants. The couple co-manage and co-own several apartments in the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area. Around 10:15 a.m., Janice arrives at the office. Two hours later, Janice's body is discovered lying behind her desk. Someone stabbed her more than ten times and left her to die. For years, Gretna police struggled to investigate Janice's homicide. Despite interviewing more than 180 people, they had little to go on. Then, in 1995, the murder weapon was discovered and several arrests were made in relation to Janice's case. However, members of Janice's family think the individuals arrested, indicted, and sentenced for Janice's murder weren't even involved. In episode 344, Jac and Alexis detail the strange events and evidence surrounding Janice's killing, including her then-husband's suspicious affair with a 25-year-old tenant.

Louisiana's death penalty law got a big rewrite earlier this year as part of the state's special session. Gov. Jeff Landry signed a bill that adds electrocution and nitrogen hypoxia to the list of state-approved methods for carrying out capital punishment. Now, the latter method is getting some pushback late in the legislative session. Some Democratic and Republican lawmakers are hoping to remove the use of nitrogen gas as an execution method. Notable supporters include some prominent leaders in Louisiana's Jewish community. Sara Lewis is chair of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, and she is on the steering committee for Jews Against Gassing. She joined the show to discuss her group's efforts. Alternative funding plans, or AFPs, are a growing tool used by health insurance coverage providers nationwide. The plans have been causing some consternation for policyholders who thought they were covered by their health insurance, but discovered they weren't for certain chronic health conditions. Ashley Castello is executive director of the Louisiana Hemophilia Foundation, and she joined the show to share more about AFPs and how they can impact you. A national nonprofit has filed a lawsuit against the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services on behalf of 4,000 foster children in the state. It claims the state's child welfare system is failing its most vulnerable children. Alleged failures include too few social workers and placements for children. To tell us more about the situation, including what the lawsuit claims and how DCFS is responding we heard from Andrea Gallo, a reporter with The Advocate/Times Picayune who has been covering the story. The state of Georgia recently promised nearly $2 billion in incentives to persuade Hyundai to open an electric vehicle plant there. But Georgia isn't the only Southern state betting that EVs will usher in a manufacturing renaissance in the region. As the Gulf States Newsroom's Stephan Bisaha reports, many Southern states are also preparing for the EV industry to lead to carloads of good jobs. The New Orleans Opera is putting racial injustice front and center at an upcoming performance of “Blue.” This contemporary opera was created by Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori and Emmy-nominated librettist Tazewell Thompson.  Timothy Douglas, the production's stage director, talks about bringing this story to a Southern stage for the first time.  In May, the nonprofit Unity of Greater New Orleans found that the city's unhoused population had increased by more than 50 % since 2022. Now, an ambitious project – backed by federal funds and homeless service nonprofits – is in the works to close down homeless encampments and provide housing for residents in need.  Mandy Chapman Semple, a managing partner at Clutch Consulting, the Texas-based group that has been hired to lead the project, joins us for more on the initiative.  Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Diane Mack. 518. We talk to Sam Irwin about his new book on jazz history. "Why did Louis Armstrong choose the Fourth of July as his birthday? What did Independence Day mean to southern Blacks in 1901? How did jazzman Joe Darensbourg of Baton Rouge, the musician who played clarinet on Louis Armstrong's 1963 smash hit “Hello, Dolly,” encounter not one, but two serial murderers in his long career? The answers are found in Sam Irwin's new book, The Hidden History of Louisiana's Jazz Age. This week in New Orleans history. Reverse Freedom Rides April 21, 1962. The Reverse Freedom Rides of 1962 were a deliberate parody of the Freedom Rides organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in the previous year. Also called the Freedom Rides North, African American "participants" in the Reverse Freedom Rides were offered free one-way transportation and the promise of free housing and guaranteed employment to Northern cities. George Singelmann of the Greater New Orleans Citizens' Council orchestrated the Reverse Freedom Rides, which served as the Citizens' Councils' means of testing the sincerity of Northern liberals' quest for equality for African Americans. This attempt to embarrass Northern critics of the Citizens' Councils was a way of, in Singelmann's words, "telling the North to put up or shut up." Public outcry against the Reverse Freedom Rides was swift and direct, with groups such as the Urban League of Greater New Orleans leading the chorus of disapproval. WDSU Radio released a statement in April 1962,that typifies the response: "WDSU believes the Freedom Bus North movement is sick sensationalism bordering on moronic." This week in Louisiana.
