David Vodden, the visionary behind Thunderhill Raceway, takes you through the fascinating journey of building one of California's premier motorsports facilities. From its bold beginnings in 1993 to becoming a hub for recreational racing, professional testing, and automotive innovation, Vodden shares insights on resilience, community partnerships, and the future of this iconic track during EPARTRADE's 5th Annual Race Industry Week.
Send us a textBill sits down with Matt Busby, President and CEO of Thunderhill Raceway, to talk about everything from his love of rotary engines to the future of track day events. Matt shares his incredible journey from being a car-obsessed teenager in Louisiana to managing world-class racing facilities, including NOLA Motorsports Park and NCM Motorsports Park.We dive into what it takes to get started in racing—whether it's through karting, autocross, or jumping straight into open-wheel cars like Matt did. He shares how saying "yes" to an unexpected job offer in motorsports set him on the path to managing some of the most well-known racetracks in the country. Plus, we explore the business side of racing, from track operations to the evolving expectations of modern-day racers.Matt also has some wild track stories, including a late-night minibike jousting match, an insane wrong-way incident on track, and the time a tornado nearly wiped out NCM Motorsports Park. We also discuss the biggest mistakes new drivers make at track days, how racing facilities must adapt to changing demographics, and why building a welcoming paddock culture is key to growing grassroots motorsports.
This week we decided to bring in the owner/operators of one of our personal favorite trackday orgs in the USA!! Tracktime is a relatively new motorcycle track day organization that has operated solely at The Ridge Motorsports Park for several years now, but are actually expanding their operation to northern California adding Thunderhill Raceway to their calenday for 2024!! With both Alan and Jen having racing experience they know importance of teaching racetrack fundamentals from the very beginning and implement that into each of their track days, but what else makes Tracktime so different from the rest of the orgs? For the answer to that question and many others you'll have to stick around for the full episode, and of course you'll be able to enjoy some solid motorcycle chats as always from your favorite weekly motorcycle podcast! It's time for a quick Carmudgeon Catch-Up. The boys have been busy filming, but they're back in the studio for a session to discuss what's been going on. And, it turns out, to ponder what life would be like with only two cars. == This episode of “The Carmudgeon Show” is presented by Valentine One Radar Locator: Find radar before it finds you! https://bit.ly/Valentine1_Hagerty Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-ICONS == The updates are many! Jason's Dodge Grand Caravan finally got the custom license plate he ordered almost a year ago – and its innocent profanity is making him laugh. Beatrice the E30 325i is back on the road after a double-suspension swap with Jason's 325i Touring. Thanks to help from the legendary Bill Arnold Independent BMW, the Spec E30 kit is now on Beatrice, complete with a new clutch and throw-out bearing, and she's ready for track days and rallies. And, of course, taking Jason's niece to Thunderhill Raceway's Teen Survival driving school. Where G learned just how it feels to be in low-earth orbit. And the 325iT switched back to factory antiroll bars with H&R's new springs, tuned specifically for E30 Touring, and Bilstein B8 shocks that were a gift from our friend Sreten at M539 Restoration in Germany. Meanwhile, Jason also went to Radwood SoCal 2023, where he gave away a gorgeous set of RML Snowflake wheels to a deserving Scirocco fan. He also met @outlaw_welt — a fan and a gentleman who 3D-printed a bunch of Carmudgeon Show and Jason Cammisa Hagerty Show logo pieces. And gave Jason a ride to the airport in his C126 500SEC 6-speed manual. Of course, no Carmudgeon Show would be complete without a discussion of Sacco-era Mercedes, and the boys successfully put on a Cars & Coffee in Berkeley on Bruno Sacco's 90th Birthday. More than 100 cars showed up, including almost a dozen W124 500Es. Quite an achievement — and Happy Birthday, Mr. Sacco! Meanwhile, Jason will have just completed his third 24 Hours of Lemons race at Sonoma Raceway (wish him luck and safety) with Bill Arnold and Randy Pobst. The last time they ran this race, 2 years ago, they won overall in their tired, battered E28 BMW. And Derek has major news to share: he's parting ways with ISSIMI to start his own dealership. Daihatsu? Daewoo? Either way, Derek will be peddling the Cheapest D in Town! Details to follow! And he spent a couple days driving his brother's Rivian R1S. Derek's bro has what could possibly be the best 2-car solution ever: an ND2 Miata and a Rivian. This leads the boys to discuss: what would happen if they had to get down to just two cars. Would Jason keep just the Scirocco and the Ferrari? What else? And could Derek actually do it? The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. Historically, sedans were viewed as non-collectibles. But history was wrong — these days, sedans are doing just fine. In this episode, Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott ("Hyphen") discuss the collectible and awesome sedan — everything from the Mercedes 6.9 and 6.3 to the W124 500E, and the AMG Hammer and Hammer Wagon 500E 6.0. To say nothing of the W201 190E 2.3-16 with its triumphant debut at the grand opening of the Nürburgring GP circuit in a one-marque race won by none other than Ayrton Senna. And then there's the non-Mercedes: BMW E28 M5, the E30 325i, E36 M3, E31 850i. And the discussion of Maserati Quattroporte versus GranCoupe. And Honda Prelude, Acura Integra, Camry Coupe, Lexus SC, and Buick Reatta. The Coupe story ends with a discussion of Jason's nephew's Infiniti G35 Coupe, which started its journey at a 24 Hours of Lemons race in San Francisco and Teen Driving School at Thunderhill Raceway and drove cross-country — and Tail of the Dragon. And then met a deer in South Carolina.
Ride along with Shawn MrSedanMan Sherrill and John CustomCarNerd Meyer as they talk with Peter West of Pacific F2000. The guys talk with Peter about the Pacific F2000 Racing Series. The Pacific F2000 Racing Series offers 15 racing opportunities over six weekends at leading West Coast venues such as Auto Club Speedway, Buttonwillow Raceway and Thunderhill Raceway. The Pacific F2000 Racing series is designed to be the next step up for F1600 drivers with the introduction of wings, increased power and larger racing tires. The suspension geometry of a modern F2000 is as sophisticated as anything out there, and offers great training for drivers, engineers and mechanics. It is a formula, not a spec car, so there are numerous chassis designs, multiple motors allowed, and room to make a better mouse trap. At the same time, there are enough restrictions to keep costs in check. Be sure to find Pacific F2000 online for more information and links to all of their social media pages. Hello Fellow Racing Ears,Locke De Bretteville is the President of the Classic Sports Racing Group. I remembered hearing Locke on an episode of The Vintage Racing Podcast with Greg Tatarian a few years ago and I finally was able to chat with him in this episode. Locke and I talked about his racing memories going back into the late 60s and early 70s and his relationship with Jon Norman and other friends that were from Berkeley California. We spoke about his experience driving his Pallister Winklemann Formula B racing car, how he found his car, and what its like to drive his racing car at ThunderHill Raceway in Willows California. We also chatted about the NEW event that will be June 5 - 6 2021 and happening at WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey California. I also love golf and so this was my opportunity to ask Locke about golf at Pebble Beach. We chatted a little bit about how he won the 1974 Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur at Pebble Beach Golf Links with Johnny Miller. Johnny Miller won the tournament overall in 1974. The David Love Vintage Races will be held at Sonoma Raceway April 9 - 11 2021 and I am very much looking forward to attending this event. Thank you for listening to The Racing Ear Podcast. #theracingearpodcast#CSRG#classicsportsracinggroup#lockedebretteville #sonomaraceway
On this week’s episode of Speed Secrets Podcast, Bryce Kliewer joins me as we go in depth about the lessons learned from racing that apply to business – and vice versa. We also touch on how autocross teaches car control, and compare autocross to time trials to road racing! Bryce’s speed secret: No one wins a championship alone. Bryce’s ran the Analytics and Business Intelligence at Coldwater Creek, helping to double the size of the business up to a $1b retailer, through catalog, web sales and the opening of over 350 retail locations. He was the VP of Client Analytics and Operations at Datalogix (a small ad-tech company looking to improve how data is used to make advertising more effective) before it was acquired by Oracle. He now is the VP Enterprise Project Management Office at Oracle as part of the Oracle Data Cloud. Bryce started out getting his feet wet with local autocross driving a Subaru WRX bugeye wagon, winning multiple local class championships in STX and several top 5 season PAX driver awards. He switched to something rear-wheel drive and acquired a pretty haggard 2003 BMW 330 which he used to win multiple Rocky Mountain SCCA STX class championships and BMW CCA class championships, as well as winning the SCCA Mountain Match Tour Club Shootout. Bryce eventually found his way to the racetrack and over time gutted and caged the BMW 330 for time trials through NASA (built and sponsored by SCR Performance out of Loveland, CO). He used this car to set track records in multiple classes (TTD, TTC, TT5) over the past several seasons at various tracks (Circuit of the Americas, Thunderhill Raceway, High Plains Raceway, Hallet Motorsport, Utah Motorsport Complex, Pueblo Motorsports Park, Motorsports Park Hastings, Pikes Peak International Raceway, La Junta Raceway (some more prestigious than others...)). This culminated in winning the NASA TTC West Coast championships in 2017 (uncontested) and the 2018 NASA National Championships in TT5 at COTA.
Mandy McGee, a Duluth Minnesota native, didn’t discover her true passion for motorsports until her 30s when she attended her first track event as a novice student. Since that spring weekend in 2010, it’s been full speed ahead. After receiving her HPDE Instructor Certification from the BMW Car Club of America, in 2013, she served as an Instructor at BMW CCA events, as well as Acura NSX and NASA. In 2013, she stepped even further out of her comfort zone and competed in her first 8-hour Endurance Race at Brainerd International Raceway. She was immediately hooked, so in 2016, Mandy earned her Competition License and has since raced with NASA, World Race League, Champ Car, Midwestern Council, PBOC, and Lucky Dog League at many major racetracks including Watkins Glen International, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Thunderhill Raceway, Road America, Mid-Ohio, Sebring International Raceway, COTA, and Daytona International Raceway.
Jim Cantrell is an American entrepreneur, mechanical engineer, and road racer. He is CEO and co-founder of Vector Launch, Inc. After working at the French Space Agency CNES (Centre Nationale D’Etudes Spatiales) and the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, he worked as an independent consultant to aerospace companies for fifteen years and was on the founding teams of SpaceX and Moon Express. Jim received the NASA Innovation Award for Mars Balloon Technology in 1989. He is also the author of twenty technical papers. Jim also participates in road racing and has run in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill at Thunderhill Raceway and he’s raced in the 24 Hours of Daytona Classic. In 2005, he founded Vintage Exotics Competition Engineering, which designs and restores race cars.
Show #459 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 30th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. GENERAL MOTORS CONFIRMS ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK IS COMING "General Motors CEO Mary Barra has just confirmed that the automaker is indeed readying an electric pickup truck to compete with the likes of the electric Ford F-150 and Rivian R1T." reports InsideEVs today: " As Barra stated, electric "full-size pickups" are indeed in the future plans for the automaker. No further details were provided. Therefore, we don't even know if the electric truck will be a Chevrolet, GMC or other make. It's all up in the air at the moment, aside from full confirmation that an electric truck is in the works. These surely are interesting times for electric vehicles and, more specifically, electric pickup trucks. We're now just around the corner from the launch of not one, but several all-new electric trucks." https://insideevs.com/news/347293/electric-pickup-truck-chevy-gmc/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all- EV MAKER FARADAY FUTURE SAYS IT PROCURED AN ADDITIONAL $225 MILLION IN FINANCING "Embattled electric vehicle (EV) maker Faraday Future has received another lifeline in the wake of a dispute with Chinese real estate giant Evergrande—one of the startup’s major investors." according to TechNode today: "Faraday announced on Monday that it had received $225 million in bridge financing ahead of the company completing a $1.25 billion capital raise, which it expects to close this year. The latest financing, led by US-based asset management firm Birch Lake Associates, is aimed at helping to bring Faraday’s flagship FF91 SUV to market." Meanwhile Engadget reports: ""As part of the vendor program, Birch Lake has also provided financing to FF for the company to pay all past due amounts for approximately 60 percent of FF's vendor base, including smaller vendors who are owed less than $20,000," the company wrote. Meanwhile, larger suppliers will be able to exchange unsecured debt for "trust interests" that will include a repayment schedule. To secure the financing, Faraday said it valued its intellectual property at $1.25 billion. The company plans to use The9's cash to build the V9 EV, a version of the Faraday FF91 for the Chinese market. It has promised to build 300,000 of the EVs per year by 2020, and said it has a growing fleet of FF91 pre-production test vehicles." https://technode.com/2019/04/30/faraday-future-225-milllion-funding/ https://www.engadget.com/2019/04/30/faraday-future-another-cash-injection/ TESLA POWERWALLS REPLACE CONVENTIONAL METERS IN VT WITH ‘BATTERY-AS-A-METER’ SOLUTION "Tesla Energy is taking part in a Vermont utility company’s efforts to push its customers towards sustainable energy solutions. Dubbed as the Resilient Home program, the initiative aims to bring Tesla Powerwalls to an initial 250 homes, all of which will be using the battery storage unit as backup power and as a replacement electric meter." writes Simon Alvarez for Teslarati "The program is being launched by Vermont-based Green Mountain Power, which prides itself for being one of the most climate-conscious utility companies in the United States. Customers who are part of the Resilient Home pilot will be able to acquire two Tesla Powerwall 2 units for $30 a month or a $3,000 upfront fee. Apart from allowing customers to get more benefits from wind and solar and providing backup power during outages, the Powerwall 2 units will also be measuring customers’ energy use, effectively replacing conventional meters." Green Mountain Power CEO Mary Powell stated: "Our vision — our dream — is that there ends up being a battery in every home and business," https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-powerwall-vermont-battery-power-meter-solution/" RAC TO ADD EMERGENCY ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING MOBILE UNITS "RAC patrol vans will soon get portable electric car chargers to help vehicles that run out of battery at the roadside. The system, which was developed by the RAC and partner firm Original Ltd, is designed to give stranded electric vehicles (EVs) a “top up” that allows them to reach the nearest charging point. The “lightweight” EV Boost chargers can take power from a standard Euro 6 diesel patrol van and work with all Type 1 and Type 2 charging connectors. This, the RAC claims, allows the chargers to work with “99 percent of electric vehicles on UK roads today”. https://insideevs.com/news/347244/rac-to-add-emergency-electric-car-charging-mobile-units/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all- TOP GEAR’S “INTERESTING” HISTORY WITH TESLA CleanTEchnica looks at the love/hate relationship Top Gear has had over the years with EVs "Top Gear has had a bit of a rocky relationship with Tesla. Top Gear initially published a scathing review of the Tesla Roadster, with claims of premature failures, a range that didn’t come close to its rating, and exaggerated charging times. Former Top Gear host James May was even quoted as saying, “Battery powered electric cars will soon die altogether.” (Note: James May years later bought the BMW i3 and made it his daily commuter." But as Chris Boylan says: "The Top Gear folks recently pitted a Model 3 Performance against a comparably priced BMW M3. Jack Rix, deputy editor at Top Gear, took both cars to Thunderhill Raceway in Northern California to run them through a series of tests to see which car is the better track performer. The tests included a straight quarter mile, a 0 to 100 MPH and back to 0 test, a timed lap around the track, and a drifting test to see if a Tesla could actually drift sideways, something that racing enthusiasts have criticized Teslas for their inability to do in the past." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/04/29/top-gears-interesting-history-with-tesla-new-view-thanks-to-tesla-model-3-vs-bmw-m3-track-tests/ DAIMLER AIMS FOR 3 MW CHARGING FOR ELECTRIC TRUCKS "Daimler Trucks North America, in one of its job listings, seeks an eMobility Senior Engineer – Vehicle Charging Systems (L5), which would participate in the development of very high power charging systems for electric trucks at up to 3 MW." notes InsideEVs: "As the electric trucks will be equipped with a battery pack with capacity of an order of magnitude higher than in cars (500-1000 kWh compared to 50-100 kWh), it's reasonable to think that also the charging power will be 10-times higher (in cars the top seems to be 150-350 kW at the moment). Daimler's goal also seems to be in-line with the recent CharIN announcement about DC fast charging beyond 1 MW (potentially at up to 1,500 V and current of up to 3,000 A)." https://insideevs.com/news/347121/daimler-3-mw-charging-electric-trucks/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all- SES WATER STARTS ELECTRIC VAN TRIAL WITH EYE ON VEHICLE-TO-GRID "SES Water is trialling 10 Nissan e-NV200 vans, installing chargers at its head office and at a treatment works. The aim is to prove that EVs can be cost competitive with diesels and plot a route to broader deployment." says TheEnergyst: "The company will lease the vehicles, while Drax Group, parent company of SES’s renewable energy supplier Haven Power, will provide a package that includes the cost of electricity for charging, telematics and usage data. Drax also helped select charging infrastructure for the two sites and will provide maintenance and support services." https://theenergyst.com/ses-water-evs-electric-vans-haven-power-v2g/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Jendrik Joerdening and Anthony Navarro describe how a team of 18 Udacity students entered a self-racing car event They had very limited experience of building autonomous control systems for vehicles and had just 6 weeks to do it with only 2 days with the physical car. They describe the architecture, how they co-ordinated a very diverse team, and how they trained the models. Why listen to this podcast: - Last year a team of 18 Udacity Self-Driving Cars students competed at the 2017 Self Racing Cars event held at Thunderhill Raceway in California. - The students had all taken the first term of a three term program on Udacity which covers computer vision and deep learning techniques. - The team was extremely diverse. They co-ordinated the work via Slack with a team in 9 timezones and 5 different countries. - The team developed a neural network using Keras and Tensorflow which steered the car based on the input from just one front-facing camera in order to navigate all turns on the racetrack. - They received a physical car two days before the start of the event. This episode is mostly about the press launch for the 2016 Yamaha YZF-R6, which took place at Thunderhill Raceway in California. Along the way though, we talk about a number of items, like riding on a wet track, chassis setup, and choice overload. It's another interesting show about motorcycles, and we think you will like it.
