Lastly, Pebble Beach Resorts and the USGA unveiled the championship logo to kick off the 2027 U.S. Open. The official logo for the 127th U.S. Open incorporates enduring symbols of Pebble Beach and the championship's legacy, such as the lone Cypress—a defining symbol of Pebble Beach since its founding in 1919—and seven stars commemorating the seventh U.S. Open contested at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Hello again fellow Golfists,I was happy to be able to see some golf from Pebble Beach on Groundhog Day weekend 2023. The PGA Tour decided to do away with amateur play on Sunday at Pebble and stick with what sells; professionals playing golf. I was delighted to see this change of format because it allowed at least the pros to play the front nine on Sunday after the tournament was halted Saturday because of high winds at Monterey Peninsula Golf Club. Tom Kite won the US Open at Pebble Beach in gale force winds and nobody halted any play that day in June 1992. Once the play was over on CBS I got to see the continuing coverage on Peacock that also allowed me to see a gorgeous sunset from the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Play was then suspended due to darkness to resume tomorrow at 8am pacific time. I also enjoyed watching golf on this day with very little commercial interruption as well. Sandra Button has judged thousands of cars, Bentley to Bugatti, Maserati to Mercedes-Benz. But a masterpiece from yesteryear can still give the chairwoman of the Pebble Beach Concours a jolt. It happens early Sunday mornings when 200 cars emerge at Pebble Beach Golf Links for the annual homage to automotive beauty and tradition. "I have seen cars drive onto the field from the mist and thought, 'that's the one; that's got a run for the roses,' "said Button. Sometimes, I'm right and sometimes I'm not. Sometimes, they don't even make it out of their class. Sandra Button is celebrating her 35th anniversary as chairwoman of the Pebble Beach Concours. "But I've been surprised many, many times seeing a car come around the corner onto the field and saying, ‘wow, what is that?' It didn't translate in a photo. It's the stance, the height and everything about the car." Button, celebrating her 35th year as the event's chairwoman is our guest this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. Pebble Beach Concours: 70th anniversary Co-host Bruce Aldrich and James Raia talk with Button about the upcoming Monterey Auto Week and the enduring status of the Pebble Beach Concours. While Button celebrates her anniversary, the event is celebrating its 70th anniversary. "One of the things that's pretty neat about the Pebble Beach Concours is that our roots are definitely in motorsport," said Button. "Actually, as we are celebrating 70 years of the Pebble Beach Concours we are also celebrating 70 years of the Pebble Beach Races, which really were the star of the show in 1950." "The Concours was honestly just an afterthought. The races were the show and all the attention was on that. But we thought, 'Let's kick tires and talk cars after the races are done.' " Sandra Button, chairwoman of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. To commemorate the occasion, the Concours d'Elegance will include a Reunion Class. So far, 40 of the best of show winners will return. The vehicles will be showcased on the golf course paralleling the Pacific Ocean. "You can imagine what that's going to be like seeing what the tastes were back in the day," said Button. “Was it a more formal, bigger car? Or was it more of a French coachwork or European coachwork? In High School, at St. Thomas Aquinas, you won three individual Kansas State High School Championships. Going undefeated in her sophomore year led her to winning 29 or 35 high school tournaments over the course of her 4 years. She was selected as a National High School Golf Coaches Association All-American in 2009. Other junior golf highlights including winning two Kansas Amateur Championships, qualifying for eight USGA Championships (2 US Girls Juniors, 2 US Women's Amateurs, and 4 US Women's Amateur Public Links), and making it to matchplay at the 2011 US Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Bandon Dunes. One of Gianna's favorite junior golf memories was competing with hometown hero, Tom Watson, in the 2009 Walmart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links. The duo finished 11th in an impressive field of Champions Tour players and juniors alike. Gianna went on to play collegiate golf at Kansas State University from 2010-2014. While at Kansas State, she competed all four years as the top performer, with the lowest scoring average, and was a member of the traveling team for all 44 events played. After graduation she worked her way through LPGA Qualifying school, obtaining status on the LPGA Symetra Tour. Hello Fellow Racing Ears,Locke De Bretteville is the President of the Classic Sports Racing Group. I remembered hearing Locke on an episode of The Vintage Racing Podcast with Greg Tatarian a few years ago and I finally was able to chat with him in this episode. Locke and I talked about his racing memories going back into the late 60s and early 70s and his relationship with Jon Norman and other friends that were from Berkeley California. We spoke about his experience driving his Pallister Winklemann Formula B racing car, how he found his car, and what its like to drive his racing car at ThunderHill Raceway in Willows California. We also chatted about the NEW event that will be June 5 - 6 2021 and happening at WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey California. I also love golf and so this was my opportunity to ask Locke about golf at Pebble Beach. We chatted a little bit about how he won the 1974 Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur at Pebble Beach Golf Links with Johnny Miller. Johnny Miller won the tournament overall in 1974. The David Love Vintage Races will be held at Sonoma Raceway April 9 - 11 2021 and I am very much looking forward to attending this event. Hello again Fellow Knackered Golfists,I hit 370 balls today at the range and I wanted to share with y'all that I have achieved the mythical golf ball hitting euphoric high. Not really. I will however need to visit with Mr. Ibu Profen. I was excited to watch the magnificent presentation of Pebble Beach Golf Links on CBS this afternoon from the 2021 AT&T Pebble Beach Classic. CBS did an immaculate job presenting Pebble Beach in all of her glory to the world with the use of drone footage, blimp shots, good comments, and Jordan Spieth. Seeing Jordan hole out on 16 was a shot that I will always remember because I was allowed to yell and scream at the sight of such an immaculate piece of shot making. Anyway I captured a bit of footage from the Haggin Oaks Driving Range for my new video for The Knackered Golfist on YouTube. February 22, 1919. Pebble Beach Golf Links officially opens. For the last 100 years it has been widely regarded as one of the most beautiful courses in the world, becoming the first public golf course to be selected as the number-1 golf course in America by Golf Digest in 2001. But when it first opened, it was hardly the course the world knows it as now. Budget constraints, a premature opening, and… sheep… all led to an uneven first few years. Railroad partners Charles Crocker, Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford and Mark Hopkins were known to history as the Big Four. Together they created the Southern Pacific Railroad and changed America forever. When the last of the four associates, Collis Huntington, died in 1900 the railroad was sold and their incredibly vast company land holdings were ordered to be liquidated. These land holdings included the areas in and around Pebble Beach, California. In the spring of 1915, Charles Crocker’s son and controlling heir put 29-year-old Samuel Finley Brown Morse in charge of selling off the company assets. Morse was the captain of the 1906 national championship football team from Yale. Well liked with a sharp business mind, he was an easy pick to get the job done. In order to find buyers, Morse abandoned a plan for small lots along the coast in favor of larger lots inland and a golf course that hugged the coastline. It was as incredibly bold plan. Seeing though that the goal was liquidation and not investment, Morse had to convince the company he worked for that his plan would work. The board members had their reservations But Morse was not deterred. Morse would use existing maintenance staff to build the course, and it would be operated by using an underground irrigation system and… sheep. The course design would come free, courtesy of two well known amateur golfers: Jack Neville and Douglas Grant. In 1916, the pair would complete their initial design and construction would begin. Construction went slowly but by late 1917, the course was nearly complete. The plan was to open the course on Feb. 22, 1918. But due to some delays was pushed back to April. August Heckscher, the millionaire who built Central Park in New York, made an offer on the land, but it was too low… and that’s when Morse had an idea: he would buy the land himself, at the full asking price, if the company would give him a year to arrange proper financing. The company agreed. Samuel Finley Brown Morse purchased nearly 18,000 acres on the Monterey California coast, including the world renowned Hotel Del Monte which had opened in 1880, for $1.3M dollars. On February 22, 1919, Pebble Beach Golf Links opened. The next week Morse’s Del Monte Properties Company closed the sale. The course was visually stunning but it did not have immediate impact on golf, and had its share of critics. Morse had already opened the Del Monte Golf Course in 1897, and was warmly received by the area residents and the golf world. To this day Del Monte Golf Course remains the oldest golf course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River. Everything changed in September 1929 when Pebble Beach held its first “major”, The U.S. Amateur championship, and the star power of 27 year old Bobby Jones. The area in and around Pebble Beach operated as a hideaway for the rich and powerful, hosting celebrities, sports icons and even royalty. The property was known far and wide for its extravagant parties and alcohol even during prohibition. The Great Depression nearly ended the course, dropping membership down to almost zero. World War 2 also nearly crippled Pebble Beach. But it was kept alive through Morse’s smart business ventures, including leasing the Hotel Del Monte and land to the U.S. Navy for use as a flight school. Over its 100 year history, Pebble Beach has made golf history time and time again. In 1947 the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am golf tournament offers another boost of star power to the course’s history. In 1950 the newly formed Ladies Pro Golf Association holds the Weathervane Transcontinental Women’s Open at Pebble Beach. The tournament is won by the legend Babe Zaharias. In 1961 the U.S. amateur championship returns, this time won by 21 year old Jack Nicklaus. The U.S. Open in June 1982 plays host to the legendary duel between Tom Watson and, you guessed it, Jack Nicklaus. Watson, needing a birdie to win, completely misses the 17th green. But then he sinks a miraculous chip shot, one of the most incredible shots in golf history, then birdies the 18th hole to win the Open by two strokes. And of course, the 100th U.S. Open Championship in June 2000… won by 24 year old Tiger Woods, besting his nearest competitor by 15 strokes. Samuel Morse, regarded as the Duke of Del Monte, served 50 years as president of his company before dying in 1969. His funeral included paid respects from President Nixon and future President Ronald Reagan. The course itself has seen many improvements and major redesigns to the 5th hole and the lengthening of the incredible gorgeous 18th hole. Of course, today Pebble Beach remains one of the greatest public golf courses in the world, and you can schedule your next round, all for the low – low price of $550 per round.

Phil's wins for his 5th time on the hallowed grounds of Pebble Beach Golf Links. He started his round 3 strokes back and ended up winning by three after posting a seven-under 65 to lap the field. Phil also lets us in on why Pebble Beach is such a special place for him and his family. Leo Sens is an outgoing 12-year-old boy with lots of interests. He's a musician and photographer. He likes automobiles, and he's comfortable giving his opinion as a car reviewer. When his parents were shopping for a new car, Sens was in the back seat. Visiting car dealerships to purchase a vehicle isn't often anyone's favorite thing to do. But the younger Sens, who lives with an older sister and his parents in Oakland, California, was into it. A 2017 Audi A3 e-tron similar to the car reviewed by 12-year-old Leo Sens of Oakland, California. While his parents were in the front seat, he thought they needed the perspective of someone sitting in the back seat, a 12-year-old car reviewer. Thus, Backseat Driver, comprised of two YouTube videos, was born. Backseat Driver isn't a novel name, but it likely is unique as the name of the auto reviews created by a grade school boy. Leo Sens is our guest on Episode 49 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich was on assignment, so I interviewed Leo while he was with his family in a rental car and driving near Washington, D.C. We discussed his favorite cars, the pros and cons of the car his parents purchased and the making of his YouTube videos. Josh Sens, Leo's father, is a restaurant critic for San Francisco Magazine and a writer for Golf Magazine. I met Josh for the first time last month during a media day in advance of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course on the Monterey Peninsula. Says the elder Sens about his son, the car reviewer: “The idea came about when my wife and I were looking for a new car. We test drove a bunch with him in the back seat and he was very opinionated about them all. He kept saying that parents don't think about how cars drive for their kids. “He's only done a couple of episodes but has written directed and edited them himself. He wants to do more but is also busy with guitar and a million things that kids waste time on.” Leo reiterated his father's thoughts. In the thirteenth episode of the podcast, the girls broadcast live from the 2018 ATT Pebble Beach Pro-Am. They talk some Super Bowl happenings and recap their feelings about the Eagles defeating the Patriots in a record-setting offensive game. The girls talk about the interviews they conducted with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who chatted with the girls after the Chevron Shootout on Tuesday and the third round of the tournament on Saturday. Participants learn to to communicate better, develop self-awareness, learn to set reachable goals and practice resistance skills at one of our five programming sites while having fun and learning to play golf. Tom Watson's involvement with the First Tee of Kansas City... There is no better friend or role model for Kansas City's kids than Tom Watson. He first hosted an event for Cystic Fibrosis in 1976. From 1979 and during the 25 years that followed, supported by the Blue Hills Country Club and a host of volunteers, Tom's annual Children's Mercy Hospital Classic has produced over nine million dollars to help create one of the finest pediatric facilities in the country. Tom now hostes the Annual Tom Watson Challenge. The real winner of the event are the young people who participate in The First Tee of Greater Kansas City. Last year's event contributed more than $70,000 to The First Tee Scholarship Fund. Finally, Tom donates his time, his talent and his money in support of the Junior Golf Foundation of Greater Kansas City as Chairman of its Advisory Board.
