We talk with SCCA Hall of Fame race car driver Randy Pobst. From his racing origins in a Mk1 VW Rabbit, to his 2 wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and his personal car collection – including his Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am and Flyin' Moose Volvo 740.  To start, we'll dive into Randy's racing experience: factory contracts with Porsche, Mazda, Volvo, and Toyota. Winning the 24 Hours of Daytona not once, but twice, and his 2015 induction into the SCCA Hall of Fame. We'll cover his exploits at Thunderhill, VIR, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Daytona, Pikes Peak, Sonoma, Lime Rock, Willow Springs, and more!  From humble origins in a Mk1 VW Golf (no, not a GTI), to a factory-backed FX16 Toyota Corolla, to setting a Laguna Seca lap record in a McLaren Senna. Randy even worked on the set of 2 Fast 2 Furious as a driving instructor for the film's stars: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, and Devon Aoki – to name a few.  Randy eventually met Jason while filming an uncooperative Cayman GT4 for Motor Trend, and, despite a rocky start when Jason unexpectedly flung a Range Rover off track while racing Randy in an Alfa Romeo 4C, the two teamed up again to film multiple Ultimate Drag Race, Lap Battle and ICONS episodes for Hagerty. The whole gang laments some of the most irritating modern car tech: excessively bright headlights, lights that are somehow off at night, ABS systems that fully shut down when traveling backwards, AEB overreach, and EPAS systems that completely ruin a car's limit handling by curtailing the driver's ability to quickly catch a slide (like the Shelby GT350 Randy repeatedly spun and Jason crinkled at Willow Springs – not to mention the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3 Randy famously wrecked at Pikes Peak).  Speaking of handling, Randy divulges his dislike of twitchy cars like the Jaguar F-Type R and XJ, the KTM X-Bow, and Ariel Atom. Jason on the other hand loves an ass-y car like the V12 Vantage S, but says the Lotus Exige V6 Cup was so tail-happy it was uncontrollable. The Porsche Carrera GT is somewhere in the middle with mixed reviews and experience all around. While on the topic of handling dynamics, Randy tells us his secret plan to invent a fix for the C8 Corvette's trailing throttle oversteer. He also gives praise to Porsche's Lars Kern for his work on the latest crop of RS products – which may or may not be Randy's favorite track cars of all time out of the box, alongside the 2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition. All of which receive top marks on Randy's understeer spectrum, and are polar opposites of the likes of a 1960s Cadillac.  We'll touch on Randy's personal car collection as well, which includes a Volvo 740 sedan and wagon, his 1977 Pontiac Trans Am “Randit” (and its oil starvation woes), Toyota Tundra tow vehicle, VW Karmann Ghia and early Tesla Model S.  Plus, Derek invents a new phrase for “road rage”, Randy bitch slaps cars out of his way, and also beautifully sings Primus' Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. Based out of Sonoma, California, Flying Lizard Motorsports is one of the most iconic sports car teams in motorsports, having celebrated ten driver and team championships, as well as competed internationally at the 24 Hours of Le Mans eight times. The team currently races in the Fanatec GT World Challenge America powered by AWS, GT America powered by AWS, Pirelli GT4 America, Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America, and Porsche Sprint Challenge. The Lizards burst on the American Le Mans Series scene in 2004, becoming a Porsche factory-supported team in 2007, racing in the GT class. In 2013, the team moved to the GTC class, still competing in legendary events such as the 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Daytona. After ten years of ownership, founder Seth Neiman sold the team to longtime Crew Chief Tommy Sadler, Chief Strategist Thomas Blam, and former Lizard driver Darren Law, who turned the team into a customer racing program. In 2014, the team expanded its program to include running two Audi R8 LMS in the TUDOR Championship, and in 2015, again expanded the program to include two Porsches in Porsche Club racing, and solidified a partnership to facilitate the running of the K-PAX Racing team in the Pirelli World Challenge series. Flying Lizard closed out the season with a dominating win at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill with Toyo Tires. Flying Lizard has also competed in the 24 Heures du Mans from 2005 through 2012, finishing third in 2005, fourth in 2006, sixth in 2008, sixth in 2011, and fourth in 2012. To date, the team continues to run in professional sportscar racing, holding 10 championships, 108 wins, 214 podiums, and 340 top-five finishes. The Sonoma-based team operates four shops out of Sonoma Raceway, running machinery from some of the world's best manufacturers. Flying Lizard Motorsports has proven to be a championship contender no matter the race series or race car.

GHIT 0391:  Car Control with Nik Romano There are a few fundamental skills that truly separate drivers.  The top two that come to mind are car control and race craft.  Nik Romano owns FastSideways and also currently drives professionally for Toyota.  FastSideways is a driving school that specializes in holding events that offer personal coaching to focus specifically on improving your car control on skid pads and track through a sequence of drills and tests.  During the episode, we talk about a wide variety of aspects of car control and hatch a not so subtle, devious plot to hold the first ever east coast FastSideways car control event.  Our team has already reserved many spots, but please let us know if you are interested in joining Nik, his instructors, and us at the event.  We cannot wait.  Perhaps we can talk him into holding it on a local frozen lake?  Vicki is already making the hot chocolate.  This episode is an ideal follow up to our recent episode on catching a car where Vicki revealed a specific hole in her car control technique. A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/FastSideways  If you would like to help grow our sport and this podcast: You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating, that we would appreciate that very much.  Even better, a podcast review, would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving and we would appreciate it. We hope you enjoy this episode! PS  If you are looking to stream or save your integrated telemetry/racing data with you video, Candelaria Racing Products Sentinel System may be the perfect solution for you.  We are amid installing the system in two of our cars.  If this sounds like something that may help you and your team, please use our discount code "GHIT" for a 10% discount code to all our listeners during the checkout process at https://candelaria-racing.com/ PS2  Please do not forget that if you are looking to add an Apex Pro to your driving telemetry system, do not forget to use our discount code for all Apex Pro systems you will receive a free Windshield Suction Cup Mount for the system, a savings of $40.  Just enter the code “ghitlikesapex!” when you order from https://apextrackcoach.com/ Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Ben, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers   Highlights for this episode include: 1)  We start off with the importance on car control on you driving, your safety, and even the speed that you can drive on track. 2)  We talk about the CPR acronym and how Vicki have grown from floating through turns and moved into adding slip angle into her track driving.  Listen to the tires sing. 3)  The advantages and disadvantages of a turbo when trying to drive at the limit. 4)  The advantage of recover vs react in CPR.  This is a version of our often covered prediction vs reaction discussion, but better. 5)  How to use telemetry to assist in your car control and what to look out for. 6)  We define what is meant by car control when driving a car on a track or in a high performance condition, such as autocross or even when trying to avoid a potential accident on the street.  7)  The relationships between car speed, horsepower/torque, and wheelbase on a car's car control window and inherent ease/difficulty imposed on the driver. 8)  We get Nik's definitive answer to what is snap oversteer or lift oversteer.  Is it Bigfoot or is it Nessie? 9)  We even have a discussion of Senna vs Prost during the episode.  How about those for search words for a podcast?  Lol. 10)  Nik adds to Bill's car purchasing list.  Vicki loses her mind for a few minutes. 11)  Vicki and Nik discuss drifting, Formula Drift, GridLife, and Gymkhana.  Vicki lost her mind the first time she saw this live at GridLife and has gone down a deep YouTube hole.  We hope she comes backout soon, lol. 12)  How to adapt your driving technique to a car that is either understeering or oversteering.  Note this does not involve having your friend running next to the car and making car adjustments. 13)  The effect of the type of tire on car control, especially street tires vs racing slicks.  This is especially evident by the slip angle of the tire and the performance window where the tires perform best.  We also cover the impact that the tire design and manufacturer can have on this as well. 14)  The importance of car control on new and inexperienced drivers.  it can literally save their lives. 15) One of the best Thunderhill 25 stories we have ever heard.  To get more details about Nik and Fast Sideways, please follow them at: Website:  https://www.fastsideways.com/ Instagram:  @fastsideways Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/fastsideways

He's also  been a drift judge, a precision driver,  co-hosted a show on Hagerty  along with our own Zack Klapman, and has been the face of many brands.    Recorded August 16, 2022   Head to Policygenius.com to get your free life insurance quotes and see how much you could save. Use Off The Record! and ALWAYS fight your tickets! Our second ever non-PG podcast, but it was so worth it.   Peter Hopelain joins us to discuss Bill’s bucket list goal of racing in the Thunderhill 25 endurance race.  Peter has raced in the Thunderhill 25 nearly every year and also been on the podium several times and recently won his team’s class.  We had a great discussion of the background of the race and how to prepare and compete.  Peter was also kind enough to stay on with us to discuss racing in general, his non-profit racing team, as well as some of his goals going forward.  We are so appreciative of Peter taking his time out from his incredibly busy schedule and giving us so much of his time.  He even put up with some of our Fast and Furious Storytime Questions.  We would love to have him on again and cannot wait to go into more details of his driving history and exploits. In this episode of Dominating with Dawson, Vicki eventually asks Ben a question (after perhaps the longest intro of all time, lol) and we start to cover some of the adjustments that are available to you that can help to dial in a car’s handling on track.  We cover some of the basic changes and the effect that they will have on the way the car feels and handles in a high performance driving scenario.  If you ever had a car that you wanted to adjust but were unsure how to, or in which direction to adjust, this episode may be very helpful to you.  Adjustment areas we reviewed included:  Sway bar/anti roll bars, tire pressures, wheel alignment, etc.  This is the likely the first of a many part series. You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc.  Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. For instance, leaving an Apple Podcast rating is very easy.  If you go to your podcast library, under shows and click on the podcast you can leave a (5?) star rating and enter your review.  A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/PeterHopelain We hope you enjoy this episode! Shawn Sampson of Sampson Racing Communications essentially started the use of in-car radio system use for amateur racing about 30 years ago.  Since then, he has been working with all types of racing and racing organizations including NASCAR, NASA, and SCCA, as well as the US Coast Guard.  During the episode, we go into the different types of radios, their use and capabilities, as well as various installation tips of what to do, and in our case a several things we should not have done.  Our team has historically had a difficult time communicating within a race, but after this episode, we know what to do and how to test our systems so that at our next race we will have crystal clear two way communication across the entire track area.  And some great news is that you may not need to buy anything else for your system.  It could be a simple matter of improving your installation and eliminating several ways that commonly impact many/most radio installations.  Now if we could only get a mute button for Alan, lol. On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, Ben, Vicki, and Bill go into the typical ways that you will get off and on a track for the first time to help minimize any stress related to starting out at your first track day or HPDE.  Each track may have individual idiosyncrasies that vary, but the fundamentals are usually very similar.  We also go into tips on hand signals and procedures that everyone has messed up early on in their high performance driving career at a track.  This includes getting onto the grid and track, getting off the track, and within the paddock area.  It is very easy to make simple errors and hopefully this will minimize yours and help you feel more comfortable coming out onto the track.  Communication is the key, both before and especially during a track session.  You cannot overdo your communication to your fellow drivers. How the use of radios originally started with amateur racing and some of the advantages of having radios beyond improving your race performance. 2)  Is your radio system doing everything you would like?  Is your radio system crystal clear across the track? 3)  If not, this could be the podcast to solve all your issues. 4)  Do you want a Digital or an Analog system?  Covered. 5)  What about a 5-Watt vs a 25-Watt system?  Does it matter?  Is the price difference worth it/worth anything? 6)  What about mounting issues?  How to make it a clean installation of both the radio and the antenna?    7)  Does the roof material/mounting surface impact performance?  How can this impact your antenna selection and the mounting method for best signal? 8)  What are the +/- 5 things that are impacting your current system? 9)  Can the antenna that came with your radio be better than the roof mounted antenna?  If so, why and what can you do to fix that and improve your system overall? 10)  How your antenna cable can turn into an inductive coil and strangle almost all the potential signal and range. 11)  Also, the importance of the helmet microphone type and placement.  Also, your push to talk button is a common issue. 12)  How to adequately test your system BEFORE you get to the track and have no time, tools, or parts available. 13)  Picture of our radio gun case and Shawn’s multiple charging systems and soft packing solutions (crew wall bag) 14)  IMSA vs NASCAR:  What is the difference and what are the pluses and minuses of each.  15)  Shawn helps solve our team internal squabbles on where to position our push to talk button.  16)  UHF vs VHF systems.  It matters, especially if not at an enclosed circle or oval type track etc.  17)  What is the latest and best solution for in-car communication between the seats for an instructor at an HPDE?  Is anything good?  Chris Egan, please take note.  Lol. 18)  How does the location of your pit crew at the track impact the signal, especially within a metal garage, near a fence, etc. 19)  Installation tips and tricks for putting the radios, microphones, and earpieces into the helmet. 20)  How to keep the helmet installation from stressing during driver changes and especially during endurance racing. 21)  Speakers or earbuds? 22)  5-Watt systems vs 20- or 25-watt systems?  Is bigger better? 23)  Do you need an FCC license for amateur endurance racing? 24)  Bluetooth vs a wired system?  Is it worth the price distance?  What is the range?  How is Bluetooth usually used in racing? 25)  Can I tie in the radio system into my cell phone?  Should I? 26)  What can Sampson Racing Communication assist you and your team with? 27)  What are the differences between the different antennas available? 28) And probably most important, on what and where should you spend your money to maximize your communication performance and minimize your expenditure? 29)  Can I tie in my in-car communication into my in-car video system?  What do I use? 30)  What should you know about the Thunderhill 25 race?  Shawn Sampson on YouTube:  https://tinyurl.com/ShawnsPersoanal Sampson Racing Communication on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/SRCsYoutube

This episode of our podcast is a listeners request, Jennifer, Vicki, and Bill go over what we have been up to and begin to look at where we are going for next year.  Lots of changes, lots of cars gone, still a few to go, and lots of new cars added, most need some TLC.  We think we are on a good path, but you can be the judge of that.  Also, on this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, we get into a discussion of driving skill vs driving talent.  Lots of opinions, lots of thoughts, probably the first of several discussions related to this.  In the end, there are very few people, if any, who if they are interested in our sport and apply themselves, cannot get to a competitive level and become a very good driver and racer.  At least that’s what we think.   We hope you enjoy this episode!   Best regards,   Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers   Highlights from this episode include: 1)  Our upcoming skid pad & autocross car control event at Lime Rock with Safety Third Motorsports.  Jennifer and Vicki as so excited it is hard to explain, even for them. 2)  How the 2.75 Porsche 944’s and 1.0 Boxsters have found new homes and Brad’s starting to prep his E46 330 for his move to Colorado.  Maybe we have the beginnings of a Midwest/Mountain time zone team.  4.75 cars in one weekend. 3)  The plan for the SpiderStang Mustang and the black Honda Civic are still tbd at this point, but may be available. 4)  Bill has located a HPDE car that is undergoing some upgrade and preventative maintenance with the help of John Lavin from Safety Third Motorsports.  It is a E46 that is changing from a SMG transmission to a manual transmission because that is just so much more fun and engaging. 5)  An E46 330 shell magically appeared and is the long-term project car for Bill’s goal of running the NASA Thunderhill 25 by 2025.  So far, we have 3.5 drivers who are interested and now need only one more driver and Bill to get some more skill. 6)  What are we doing with 1974 Capri.  We have plans, but not enough skill at this point. 7)  Should we build two Civic race cars, we don’t know for sure at this point.  Still TBD. 8)  Our 2017 Ford F150 black cap is also looking for a new home 9)  Mechanical status for each car and the progress to be accomplished over the off season this winter. 10)  Bill is apparently stuck in bad joke/dad joke mode throughout this episode.  We apologize. 11)  We talk about what the plan is for modifying the cage in the yellow Honda Civic and the two smaller jobs of fixing the engine and adding new/better seat mounts. 12)  Vicki is reminded of the winter project that was set for last winter.  Perhaps we will have better luck this year.  TBD.  Maybe someday the ND Miata may actually have an interior again. 13)  Bill tries to get some planning on the upcoming themes.  Vicki and Jen don’t want to get into it at all.  Bill thinks its all a coverup for no plan.  We shall see. 14)  Vicki learns about the most romantic anniversary gifts ever.  Why does Vicki put up with this?  How did Bill ever get so lucky? 15)  We are all three going to complete some car related courses this winter.  Eventually, we will be competent mechanically and electrically.  (These had better be good courses if they are to get us there, lol.) 16)  New/recent garage tools and capabilities that will aide us this winter, with a quick review of each. 17)  We reverse the “what does someone know about you that no one knows” question on each other.  Bill stuffs a big foot into his mouth during this one.  He will be sleeping in the bathtub for a long, long time. 18)  Vicki learns that Thunderhill is located in California.    Any ideas for Guests?   Any ideas for upcoming topics?   Please let us know at GarageHeroesInTraining@gmail.com or on our Instagram at @GarageHeroesInTraining

Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers   Highlights from this episode include: 1)  How his racing experience has helped with both car testing and development as well as tire testing, also complimenting his business development in both areas. 2)  How his race at the 25 Hours at Thunderhill went last year and the pleasure of a mostly night race on a very muddy track.  His skid school training was really pushed to the limit. 3)  How the different Hankook Motorsports tires are designed and manufactured to be longer lasting and more stable, perfect for endurance racing. 4)  A discussion of the benefits and challenges in designing a tire, both slicks/racing tires as well as the 180 tread wear tires we race. 5)  The basics of tire designations and understanding the letters and numbers typically on a tire such as 245/40 ZR17 vs 225/50 VR16 etc. 6)  Tips on tire and rim selection and the importance of the interaction of the rim width and the tire tread width. 7)  Important considerations like rim width to tire width, tire profile, tire loading, tire circumference interaction with the car gearing, etc. 8)  How the mass of a tire affects the heating up of the tire and affects the endurance/stability of the tires. 9)  Whether you need to break in a tire, how to break it in, and why the cars are always swerving back and forth at the beginning of a race. 10)  How best to pre-heat your tires on pace laps.  Also, please avoid the marbles, nothing good can come from them. 11)  Heat cycling, proper tire break in, and storage of tires for racing slicks and possibly RS4's.  Sunlight is not your tire's friend. 12)  Optimum tire temperatures and hot tire pressures for the RS4's and similar tires. 13)  Whether heat cycles are an issue on RS4's, as well as racing tires and slicks. 14)  Bill reminisces about his bad Armor All experience when he was much younger. 15)  The importance of tire temperature and pressure and general windows for the Hankook tires.  Including how to measure and interpret the tire temperatures when testing at the track, as well as suggested car or tire changes to respond to tire temperature variation across a tire or from side to side and/or front to back. 16)  Temperature ranges and pressure ranges for slicks and R comps tires and how it varies by the compound you select. 17)  Autocross users may need to look at using tire warmers to alleviate the problem of thermal transients and never reaching a true steady state temperature or pressure. 18)  Jason from Lucky Dog has been keeping a secret from us related to using RS4's in the rain on a track.  We will have to talk with him at Charlotte, lol. 19)  A good discussion of filling the tires with air vs nitrogen vs carbon dioxide.  The key is keeping the water out so that it wont boil in the tire affecting the stability of the air pressure during a race. 20)  What is involved in keeping tire records and how to actually use the information.  Sounds like Bill will be making another excel spreadsheet immediately. 21)  We tried to get some breaking news on the new RS5's but we did find two new size additions that are coming soon.  All NDA's stayed intact during the episode. 22)  Vicki brings up the time when Bill lost a tire, again.  She just can't help it whenever an opportunity arises. 23)  Vicki is jealous of the Lucky Dog RS4 tires having a Lucky Dog sticker and is trying to figure out how to do it with our logo.  Still tbd but she is all over it.

Julian Cordle is our guest for this episode and celebrate Blursday!  Julian races with the Snow Speeder Pilots Association racing team that races on the west coast, one of the original Lemons teams from the inaugural Altamont race.  The episode starts off with all of our usual professionalism and then, well really, who are we kidding.  The alphabet is apparently still a challenge for us.  Julian started with Lemons in 2012 after he first heard about the 24 Hours of Lemons on Jalopnik.  He met his team on his driveway and immediately left for his first race two states away.  We reminisce about his early days, setting Guinness Book of World Records records, and through to his latest Chrysler 300 race car build. Dominating with Dawson covers what happens when you have a mistake on track and how to minimize the potential outcome.  Ben also cites taking a peak at the professional racing driver Sandro Espinosa as a potential reference for how someone preemptively catches a car pre-slipping to avoid an issue.  Also, Danica Patrick on how to prepare for a big hit when you can no longer avoid it.   Sample links discussed: Sandro Espinosa at Road Atlanta:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd1QnaUq3kc Danica Patrick Crash Prep:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya3bE8CT1Kk We really hope you enjoy the episode. Best regards,   Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team Highlights include: 1)  His battery powered recliner that is faster than some of our race cars 2)  How a man from Alaska grew into a low-cost endurance racer 3)  Our first XR4TI makes an appearance on our podcast 4)  Jen chimes in with her opinion on our teaching her how to drive a stick.  Julian tops to with learning with a vehicle that "offered" electrical shock incentives. 5)  How the 25 Hour at Thunderhill led into Race Cast 6)  How he helped with organizing the world record that was set at a Lemons event in Thunderhill 7)  What the overall process is of setting and getting recognized as a world record 8)  Vicki starts off with "since you seem to be a person", lol. 9)  Several tips and tricks to help teams and drivers compete at the track, besides behind the wheel 10)  White boards for at the track organization and how to use them to plan your race strategy 11)  A BIG shout out to Randall Pinney and we all hope you are feeling better 12)  Sonoma Raceway makes an appearance in the Good, Bad, and the Ugly segment. 13)  1989 Camero, 'Nuff Said 14)  We develop a new Lemons penalty, well sort of.

Also Ben reviews two videos pertaining to the driving style of the legendary Ayrton Senna on this Dominating with Dawson segment. Links to the videos: Senna Throttle Technique is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4kcLyYhThE Senna Footwork (with accurate audio) is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzLjZWrpzmQ&feature=youtu.be   If you want to contact Sam Smith, he recommends DM'ing him on Twitter or Instagram @ThatSamSmith.  Or you can read his articles on Road & Track and don't forget to watch for him on NBC Sports Proving Grounds.   Best regards,   Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights for this episode include: 1)  How his current Caterham 7 project car progresses from a box to a functioning car 2)  His automotive past and how he worked his way through the tangled web of automotive journalism to have a successful professional career in a very tough business area 3)  An overall discussion on driving being a skill and a sport, but definitely learnable by many is not all 4)  Now Nigel Mansell confirms we are not going to be a pro racing driver anytime soon 5)  Sam's racing history is pretty incredible and has some absolutely spectacular cars including a McLaren F1 and F1 GTR, an actual Formula 1 car, and a few great stories of his racing (with Mental) at the 2019 NASA 25 Hours at Thunderhill in the rain and the ever so lovely mud. 6)  Bill valiantly tries to sell a Citroen SM, for a friend.  Still available for a good home.  We know a guy. 7)  Bill digs a hole on a comment that will likely lead to issues from some of our friends and soon to be friends who are Porsche fans. 8)  How his schedule has been impacted by our current social distancing due to the Covid 19 virus 9)  When car technology and societal sanity intersected, perhaps for the worse. 10)  Sam's experience with racing the RX-7 Black Betty (rambutan) when it was still set up as a time trial car.  He misses the old, scary setup. 11)  His thoughts on modern cars in general, are they too fast, too intrusive, and are there any good drivers' cars still available and the potential impact it may have on racing in the future. 12)  Sam also lists several of the current cars that are highlights within the available assortment at your local dealer for both on and off-road driving fun. 13)  Electric cars and electric car motorsports/racing, and the varying degrees of success for each. 14)  Thoughts on autopilot and potential impending issues in the transition to full autonomy (SAE Level 5) 15)  His experience with test driving a true Formula 1 car and how he grew to acknowledge the difference between his level and those gifted individuals driving at the level of Formula 1, as well as the actual level of performance of the car itself.  The tip of the spear is very, very pointy indeed. 16)  Breaking News for one of the first times:  Sam's "Ugly" story is one for the books!  It involves another one of our original bucket list guests to be (hopefully) Jason Camissa and a Ford GT, but we will go no further.

Brent Picasso has been racing since 2009 and has since created a company that provides the RaceCapture and Podium real time telemetry and data capture/display systems.  We cover the development history and capabilities of the system, as well as his racing history.  With what originally began as a self-tweeting race car, they have been able to develop one of the best and most complete systems we have seen to date. Podium is capable of being used with virtually all data collecting systems and converts the data into many potential formats to aid in understanding and analyzing.  RaceCapture is a separate  system that comes in three levels suitable for once in a blue moon track day participants to full time professional racing teams. His initial racing history began at Thunderhill with what was originally intended to be a Peugeot entry but eventually led to turbo Miata and 1,000 penalty laps and the race to zero laps began.  The initial wheel to wheel racing action set the hook and he hasn’t looked back since.  Since then, in addition to the Peugeot, his conquests included a turbo 3-cylinder Mercur XR4Ti, a Crown Vic, and a second gen V6 MR2. (Bill really wants a piece of that MR2 since he had one in college)  1)  The development history of both RaceCapture and Podium and how each can be used together or with other data capture systems like AIM, MoTeC etc.  2)  The use and capabilities of the various systems and how they interact 3)  Data collection capabilities as well as how the data can be followed, used, and displayed, both in real time at the track, remotely, or within the racing car itself. 4)  There are three levels of the RaceCapture system, what they are used for and how they differ 5)  Podium app capabilities, use, and several upcoming features and capabilities 6)  Ability to look at data in real time or as a review, especially with racing coaches and friends. 7)  These systems appear to lower the barrier to look at and use any data you are collecting currently or in the future 8)  Driver data comparison techniques and use 9)  Some of the key improvements of this environment is the lower barrier to using and understanding and improving as a result of the data 10)  The interface is also able to be used as a real time, in car dashboard and/or dashboard replacement 11)  It is also able to be used not only in the car, but also in the garage/paddock at the track, and even remotely, all in real time on a wide variety of hardware including computers, laptops, iPads, phones, etc. 12)  What is predictive lap time, how it is calculated and potentially used on the track 13)  How the system works with driver changes etc., so common in endurance racing 14)  Pit use vs in car use vs post-race review usage and options 15)  Options and thoughts for use with multiple cars/multi car teams 16)  We try to overview the installation process and requirements, as well as how they vary depending on the car being used, its OBD2 capabilities etc. 17)  Options and thoughts regarding additional sensor use for things like brake pad temperature or tire temperatures 18)  What is Canbus and how it can be used with the system to increase the capabilities and data that can be collected and monitored in real time, like differential temperature etc. 19)  Shift X3 capabilities and usage to form alarms and warning systems for the driver of potential car issues such as engine rpm shift lights, oil and water pressure and temperatures etc.  20)  Advanced customization options are also available for those interested through Lua programming capabilities built into the system 21)  Options and use within dedicated race cars, as well as occasional track/daily driver cars 22)  In car dashboard replacement options with using the system 23)  We are very excited with several of the upcoming additions to the systems and steps to continuously improve the ease (of use and data “digestion”) and capabilities of the systems and how they integrate with each other and external data sources like video etc., as well as several advanced pit-to-car communication capabilities All of this can be used for track days, HPDE events, and racing events at all types of venues and tracks, including impromptu tracks and non-traditional racing areas common with Autocross events etc.    We are placing our order for several of these systems next week and will likely have our review in an upcoming episode(s) as we progress.  Best regards, Bill, Vicki, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Several links mentioned within the podcast: Autosports Lab/RaceCapture:  https://www.autosportlabs.com/ Podium App:  https://podium.live/software Aim Sportline:  https://www.aim-sportline.com/index.htm MoTeC:  https://www.motec.com.au/products-currentrange/product-directory/

Can the Garage Hour goons pull off the ultimate two-faced episode? Two great gearhead topics - road-racing with the 24 Hours of Lemons gang at Thunderhil,l and a little bit of basic "prepping" so you won't need to fight with the low-information idiots at Wal-Mart over a can of Spam - can we do it? We start with the racing - how can't we? - and the crapcan series nationally known as the 24 Hours of Lemons, and their latest rustastic assault on Thunderhill: everything from adventures in wiring, Civic fails (because of that wiring), rampant cheating and misadventure on and off-course, and how not to win.  Fast Guy and sometime cohost Cram Grebneseir then regales us with tales of his plan to LS1 a 3-Series BMW (cram, indeed), which we approve of wholeheartedly. Sandwiched between tales of smoking wiring looms is an analysis of what you need to be prepared for a little bit of disaster if the low-information hordes manage to collapse society in your neighborhood - here and there - during the coming Year of the Idiot.  Because you're a Garage Hour listener, we expect you've got the firearms part of the equation figured out (likely overfigured, we bet), so our focus is on the bagels, the batteries and the Band-Aids.  You can handle the bullets. Cram joins Hostus Maximus Nitsuj Trof and cohosts .45 Lihp and Ekim the Kcud in-studio as they also celebrate Columbus Day, National Stare at a Hybrid Owner Like Something is Wrong with Them Month, and every other holiday that gets in their way.
