Daihatsu Motor Co. has reported an operating loss of 5 billion yen for fiscal 2023, its first red ink since fiscal 1992, when Japan was in an economic slowdown following the bursting of the country's asset bubble.
Japanese carmakers Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Suzuki and Yamaha have admitted to cutting corners or providing false data in safety tests needed to get vehicle models certified. The disclosures come as a result of internal investigations ordered by Japan's transport ministry in the wake of massive test rigging at Daihatsu, a Toyota subsidiary. Plus, Chinese online fast-fashion giant Shein is poised to go public on the London Stock Exchange, with a potential valuation of nearly €60 billion.
Daihatsu Motor Co. told the Japanese transport ministry Thursday that it will recall 104,471 units of two car models due to the risk that their stabilizers will fail.
A Japanese automaker that cheated on safety tests for decades said on January 22 that it doesn't expect to resume shipping cars any time soon. The Japanese government ordered a subsidiary of Toyota to halt production of its entire lineup after reports of faked safety test results emerged last year. The Daihatsu Motor Co. skipped mandatory safety tests by copying data from testing on one side of cars to the other and used timers to ensure airbags went off in tests, a review found. No major accidents have been reported in connection with the cheating, but the news has raised serious questions about oversight at Daihatsu, as well as its corporate parent Toyota. Japanese regulators approved five of the company's models on January 19 after more testing, but Daihatsu executives said its factories will remain shuttered as it waits on suppliers. “We face a very tough road ahead in winning back customer trust about safety and security,” corporate manager Keita Ide said on January 22, stressing that customers felt betrayed. He said the company is working on a plan to prevent cheating in the future. Daihatsu is known for kei cars, or light automobiles, including the popular Daihatsu Tanto “kei,” or small, car. It also produces the Toyota Raize hybrid sport-utility vehicle, also sold as the Daihatsu Rocky. An investigation including third-party experts found 174 cases of faked tests affecting dozens of models, including cars sold under the Toyota Motor Corp. nameplate. The review found that cheating went back 30 years. The scandal began after a whistleblower came forward in April last year. Daihatsu has apologized and promised sweeping reforms to its corporate culture. Daihatsu President Soichiro Okudaira has attributed the cheating to pressure on workers to meet tight deadlines. Daihatsu said there may be recalls, although none have been announced yet. Japanese media reports said the recalls are likely to total more than 300,000 vehicles. “The standards of governance at the Toyota group are being questioned,” nationally circulated Sankei newspaper said in an editorial. “Getting to the bottom of this is needed, as consumer trust in the overall Toyota brand is at risk.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

FOLLOW UP: CRUISE'S ACCIDENT FAILURES ARE WORSE THAN GUESSEDThe ‘independent' review by a legal firm employed by both GM and Cruise has produced their first report into the incident where a pedestrian who was knocked into the path of a driverless taxi was hit and dragged by the car. They try to claim that no one really meant to deceive the regulators and it was the internet that prevented them from showing the full video. They admitted that no one then attempted to explain verbally or via email. You can learn more from this Jalopnik article link here. EU FINDS MOST CARS EMIT SAME CARBON LEVELS AS 12 YEARS AGOAn investigation into the EU's progress regarding the reduction of CO2 has found that levels emitted by cars has not changed in 12 years. A combination of larger, heavier cars and an apparent significant difference between lab tested and real world emissions have all been blamed. What is missing is the significant drop in diesel vehicles, replaced by petrol and hybrids, which produce more CO2 than a diesel, whilst producing less NOx. Also in Zukunft doch wieder mehr haptische Bedienelemente. Return of the Knöpfe und Drehregler. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's time for a quick Carmudgeon Catch-Up. The boys have been busy filming, but they're back in the studio for a session to discuss what's been going on. And, it turns out, to ponder what life would be like with only two cars. == This episode of “The Carmudgeon Show” is presented by Valentine One Radar Locator: Find radar before it finds you! https://bit.ly/Valentine1_Hagerty Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-ICONS == The updates are many! Jason's Dodge Grand Caravan finally got the custom license plate he ordered almost a year ago – and its innocent profanity is making him laugh. Beatrice the E30 325i is back on the road after a double-suspension swap with Jason's 325i Touring. Thanks to help from the legendary Bill Arnold Independent BMW, the Spec E30 kit is now on Beatrice, complete with a new clutch and throw-out bearing, and she's ready for track days and rallies. And, of course, taking Jason's niece to Thunderhill Raceway's Teen Survival driving school. Where G learned just how it feels to be in low-earth orbit. And the 325iT switched back to factory antiroll bars with H&R's new springs, tuned specifically for E30 Touring, and Bilstein B8 shocks that were a gift from our friend Sreten at M539 Restoration in Germany. Meanwhile, Jason also went to Radwood SoCal 2023, where he gave away a gorgeous set of RML Snowflake wheels to a deserving Scirocco fan. He also met @outlaw_welt — a fan and a gentleman who 3D-printed a bunch of Carmudgeon Show and Jason Cammisa Hagerty Show logo pieces. And gave Jason a ride to the airport in his C126 500SEC 6-speed manual. Of course, no Carmudgeon Show would be complete without a discussion of Sacco-era Mercedes, and the boys successfully put on a Cars & Coffee in Berkeley on Bruno Sacco's 90th Birthday. More than 100 cars showed up, including almost a dozen W124 500Es. Quite an achievement — and Happy Birthday, Mr. Sacco! Meanwhile, Jason will have just completed his third 24 Hours of Lemons race at Sonoma Raceway (wish him luck and safety) with Bill Arnold and Randy Pobst. The last time they ran this race, 2 years ago, they won overall in their tired, battered E28 BMW. And Derek has major news to share: he's parting ways with ISSIMI to start his own dealership. Daihatsu? Daewoo? Either way, Derek will be peddling the Cheapest D in Town! Details to follow! And he spent a couple days driving his brother's Rivian R1S. Derek's bro has what could possibly be the best 2-car solution ever: an ND2 Miata and a Rivian. This leads the boys to discuss: what would happen if they had to get down to just two cars. Would Jason keep just the Scirocco and the Ferrari? What else? And could Derek actually do it? The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. 00:00 - SHOW OPEN - 1990-1992 Daihatsu RockyToday is the second episode of our Little Weirdo's 4x4 Edition month-long special featuring four small, fun-to-drive and affordable used 4x4 SUVs from the 80s and 90s, and today's small SUV is the Daihatsu Rocky, sold in the US from model years 1990-199201:25 - INTRO - The RockyThe Daihatsu Rocky was an outstanding example of the small 4x4's sold in the US back in the 80s and 90s, and you should know about it in case you come across a good one when you're looking for a used car or truck.03:55 - Timing Is EverythingThe Daihatsu brand was launched in the US in 1988 during a recession and in the case of the Rocky, while it was a well-built, reliable and outstanding off-road vehicle, and certainly one of the best examples of the small 4x4's sold in the US at the time, it hit the market towards the end of that small, rugged 4x4 era when consumers who wanted an SUV were gravitating towards larger 4-door examples, like the Ford Explorer and Jeep Cherokee. After only 5-years in the US and faltering sales, Daihatsu exited the US market and the Rocky was no more, but it still represents an impressive example of the small 4x4s sold in the late 80s and early 90s, so it's worth considering if you can find a good one. 05:55 - Fun Both On-Road and OffLike the other small SUVs in this month-long review, the Rocky is highly maneuverable due to it's short 85.6-inch wheelbase, which, for comparison, is more than 3-inches shorter than a 1990 Mazda Miata's wheelbase. But what made it even better was its wide track compared to the competition. At 57.9-inches, the Rocky had one of the widest tracks for a small 4x4 vehicle in its class. Combined with an independent front double wishbone suspension, traditional leaf springs in the rear and more than 8-inches of ground clearance, the Rocky offered reasonable on-road stability and comfort along with impressively capable maneuverability when driving off-road. 07:05 - Not Exactly FastThe engine motivating a 1990 Rocky was a 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder that made 94-horsepower at 5700 rpm and 94-lb.ft. of torque at 3200 rpm when new, which is pretty typical for similar size 4-cylinder engines from that era. However, unlike most of the other SUVs in this series, the Rocky was on the heavy side at about 2800 pounds. With less than 100-horsepower, a relatively high weight and a 5-speed manual transmission, you should expect zero-to-sixty-mph times similar to or a little slower than the other 4x4 SUVs in this month-long series. The only review I found with stopwatch times was from Road Test Magazine featuring a 1991 Rocky that covered zero-to-60-mph in 17.59-seconds. This is quite slow by modern standards, but still similar to the acceleration of other small SUVs in this review. Road Test Magazine Daihatsu Rocky Review - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do1k_f2MvJ4&t=5s08:50 - Features and OptionsKeeping with the nature of this rugged, jeep-like small 4x4, there weren't a lot of creature comforts available on the Daihatsu Rocky when it first launched. Early examples had hand-cranked windows, manual door locks and manual locking hubs that required drivers to get out of the truck to lock the front hubs by when using 4WD. However, over the course of the Rocky's short run, many of these issues were fixed with the addition of power windows and locks, along with auto locking hubs and more attractive alloy wheels, rather than simple steel wheels 10:10 - Two Trim LevelsSE is the base level interior with vinyl seat trimSX is more premium, with up-scale cloth seats or velour seating surfaces on the SX Plus model with wrap-around bucket seatsAir Conditioning was an...
What's interesting about Toyota is that if you buy today, you get its future growth for freeThe right time to buy might be nowICE vehicles are not going away, providing ongoing revenue supportToyota is the world's largest car manufacturer, ranked by a composite of market cap, revenue, and employees. The company has been a leader in alternative energy solutions such as hybrids and hydrogen-powered vehicles. The prior president has said that the company will “not simply repeat the approach of other companies” when it comes to electric vehicles (EV). Toyota points out the limited battery range, scarcity of lithium resources, lack of a charging network, and consumer preferences towards internal combustion engines (ICE). And developing markets in South America, Asia, and Africa could be decades away from having the infrastructure to implement a massive EV rollout; Toyota is well positioned to grow with these markets. Over the next five years, we expect Toyota to return to its pre-pandemic average growth level and achieve a CAGR of 6.9%.Hybrid and Hydrogen leadership and more EVs coming could prove critics wrongToyota is a pioneer in the mass production of hybrid technology, having rolled out its hybrid “Prius” model in 1997, since selling more than 5m. Currently, hybrids account for about 27% of total vehicle sales. Toyota is pushing ahead with hydrogen-powered cars, currently selling its “Mirai” model. The beaten-down share price is some evidence that observers expect the company's hydrogen offerings will eventually fail. But there is promise to the technology, and an investor could consider Toyota's hydrogen to have an option value. Of course, Toyota has not turned its back on EVs; recently, announcing plans to invest US$70bn in electrifying part of its fleet by 2030. We appreciate Toyota's diversified approach to transition to more carbon-neutral cars and expect total CAPEX spending of about JPY12trn over the next few years.Negative sentiment pressuring price; but at 1x PB, it might be the time to BUYThe sector is unfavorable given recession fears, as well, investors doubts Toyota's unconventional EV policies and its ability to defend its position as the world's largest carmaker. The company's price-to-book ratio (PB) dropped below 1x, which is 1x std dev below its long-term average. With an average net margin of 7.8% over the past 5 years, Toyota is among the most profitable automobile companies in the world. We believe negative sentiment has been too punishing, and the stock deserves a re-rating.FY3Q23 saw strong revenue growthToyota's 3Q23 revenue was up an impressive 25% YoY due to strong sales volume. The operating profit also grew by 22%, with the positive effect of higher sales volume more than offsetting soaring material prices.Though, the bottom line is slightly weaker YoY due to FOREX losses.Revenue structureWith 10.5m sold cars in 2022, Toyota remained the largest car manufacturer in the world. Its automotive segment, which accounts for 91% of revenue includes the production of passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and related parts. The company produces vehicles under four brands: Daihatsu, Hino, Lexus, and the namesake Toyota. Accounting for 85% of total automotive sales, Toyota was the best-selling brand. It derives 7% of its revenue from financial services. Compared to other car companies, this contribution is relatively low, meaning that Toyota generates most of its sales from its core segment of car production.Toyota gets its revenues from multiple geographic regions. In 2022, North America was the largest region in terms of revenue as it represented 35% of...

Today's show title may or may not include the summaries of our three main topics as song titles from the Troublemaker Swagger Playlist on Spotify. We're talking about Toyota outpacing February production projections, Tesla's plan to secure nickel supplies, and business students skipping Wall St for crypto. Toyota Motor Group produced 11% (including Daihatsu and Hino Motors Ltd) more vehicles in February 2022 than in the same month one year earlier. The month exceeded even Toyota's expectations by nearly 41,000 vehicles. Toyota alone still below last Feb but exceeded projections by 41,000 vehiclesHonda, reported an 8.1% increase in the same month year over yearTesla is several steps ahead in mining NickelHas been securing long term nickel contrasts far before the Russian invasion of UkraineTwo years ago Musk said, "Please mine more nickel," on an earnings call with producers. "Tesla will give you a giant contract for a long period of time if you mine nickel efficiently and in an environmentally sensitive way.""People don't realize how far ahead Tesla is when it comes to securing the supply chain for raw materials and an integrated approach to battery materials," said Todd Malan, a spokesman for Talon Metals whom Tesla has a contract to buy 75,000 tons of Nickel from Wall Street getting skipped by as business students lean into Web 3 as a career “The crypto sector has 12,000 open jobs right now, according to the aggregation platform TrueUp, including 3,000+ new listings opened last week.” many from non-banking sector companies like SpotifyTalent often walking past big banking bonuses in favor of the excitement of blazing a new trail“Brandon Hoffman, a 2022 Columbia MBA candidate who's interning at an NFT company, told us he's excited because crypto “is like a new frontier. …I think that the infrastructure that is being uncovered every day that this platform provides, I think the applications are going to be very widespread.”“The students interviewed found their passion for crypto outside of classrooms all together. They mentioned blockchain clubs and Discord channels as common experiences at their universities. But overwhelmingly, they said they learned about crypto online, on their own.”Sign up for the ASOTU Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/Listen to other episodes: https://www.asotu.com/media/podcastsRead the most recent Daily Push Back email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-emailShare positive dealer stories: https://www.asotu.com/positivity
