Today on Your Beautiful Day on The Gratitude Radio Network, Jenn MOG and Neil Haley will interview Bill Shannon of Crutch. CRUTCH, co-director/producers Sachi Cunningham and Chandler Evans' sprawling, exhaustive chronicle of performance/visual artist and action sports athlete Bill Shannon's life and work across myriad artistic and athletic disciplines, will have its world premiere in November at DOC NYC, the United States' premier documentary film festival. Far more than a chronological survey of one person's life and achievements, CRUTCH does so much more: the film shatters conventional notions of disability; it challenges the viewers to abandon conventional ideas of what “ability” means, and crosses over from artistry—in skate and dance and performance art—to education on issues of key cultural and political relevance. For the subject of a film decades in the making, Shannon's life is remarkably well-documented. Early in his childhood in Nashville, TN, he was diagnosed with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, a degenerative condition of the hip that affects one in 20,000 children aged 3-12 years; it severely degrades the smooth ball of the hip inside the pelvic joint (which Shannon describes in his own animations in the film). Breaking free of his disability but never losing sight of it, Shannon began to create skate tricks and dance moves, first as recreation and transportation but ultimately as his own unique art forms. He rose to the pantheon of artistic physical movement, Cirque du Soleil, who commissioned him to choreograph two works in their production Varekai back in 2003. “Bill Shannon defies gravity as he floats just above the ground, sweeping forward in long, smooth strides on titanium crutches. He spins, twirls, then freezes, looking like an oddly beautiful sculpture of flesh and metal. His gliding mobility seems almost magical,” wrote Sally Sommer in the New York Times. “Bill comes from a different world, does not move like I see before -- not sport, not acrobatic, not nothing I see before,'' said fellow Cirque performer Vladimir Ignatenkov. He's since developed collaborative and one-man shows year-on-year, and still makes time to teach and perform at a Legg-Calvé-Perthes camp in Florida.

About Our Guests Andrew, Kevin and Gasya Atherton are a family of circus artists working at Cirque du Soleil.  After witnessing Varekai in the summer of 2015, I immediately reached out to identical twin brothers, Andrew and Kevin to join me on Feisworld. Since then, we’ve completed two projects together including the buildout of their website AthertonTwins.com (launched in 2015), and their brand new workout series called 10 for 10 (launched in 2018), the first gymnastics and circus-inspired workout series for busy professionals on the go. All you need is your own body weight, no partner, no equipment.  Andrew and Kevin Atherton were professional gymnasts in Britain before joining Cirque du Soleil at the age of 24. 18 years later, they have performed in major Cirque shows (Varekai, Zarkana, IRIS, Paramour) around the world, often as headliners with their one of a kind aerial strap performance.  Gasya Atherton is a Cirque hand-balancer, who has become an overnight internet sensation when she shared her workout videos with her children, Kamali and Kaysen, in early 2017. Since then Gasya has built a tribe of 200,000+ engaging fans, including many inspired parents, on her Instagram page.  For show notes, tools and resources, please visit: https://www.feisworld.com/blog/atherton-family --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

“It’s a very weird job because you do all this work, and your whole life is engulfed in the show that you’re working on and every bit of attention to detail, and most of the people who come to the show have no idea that you exist… Most people know there’s carpenters, or there’s lighting people – but they don’t understand that there is somebody, who’s like a mystery person, that brings all of this together, and for some reason that attracted me. I want to be this person that does all this coordinating to bring everybody together to be able to create something every night, and I don’t need an applause.” This week I chatted with Caroline Watters, a Stage Manager for the innovative international circus arts company Cirque du Soleil. Caroline is currently touring Asia while stage managing on TORUK – The First Flight. Originally from Toronto, Caroline became attracted to the unexpected art of stage management while still in high school and received her BFA in Performance Production from Ryerson University in Toronto. The stage manager’s art is often hidden, beyond the sight or awareness of the audience, but ultimately there is a high potential for creativity on the grand scale of a live performance, and this is what drew Caroline to the work. After Ryerson, Caroline went on to obtain her MFA in Stage Management from Columbia University. While working in New York, her Broadway dream shifted to more immersive and complex productions, and shortly after graduation, she accepted an internship with Cirque du Soleil which lead to working as an Assistant Stage Manager on Zumanity. After the experience in Las Vegas, she joined the Cirque du Soleil touring production of Varekai as a Stage Manager, which lead her to joining the stage management team of TORUK. Cirque du Soleil has provided the scale and complexity that she has desired for stage managing; her final Masters thesis covered all aspects of Cirque du Soleil Stage Management. Themes from this episode include:  * The creativity of a stage manager – making the magic happen behind the curtain * Creativity in the context of a multi-national for-profit company * The rewards of being in a job that constantly puts you outside your comfort zone * Self care practice

Andrew and Kevin Atherton are living my childhood dreams. I had to put them on this podcast. Did you dream about flying as a child? I did, nearly every single day. I loved reading comic books and imagined myself as a superhero. I often dressed like one as soon as I came home from school. Recently, my mom and I went to see our first Cirque du Soleil show ever in Boston. The show was called Varekai. While every single act was extraordinary, there was one particular segment that left both of us perpetually in awe.  Two very similar looking men flew across the entire stadium over the heads of thousands of audience, then balancing on their heads and hands 50+ ft in the air. They formations looked like paintings, statues and art we had not seen before.  They are superheroes to me. As soon as I returned from show, I looked up "Varekai aerialists straps" and found Andrew and Kevin Atherton, the identical twins, the original performers and creators behind Varekai duo-straps. I emailed them right away without expecting a response. To my surprise, they replied within 24 hours with such enthusiasm to join me on Feisworld. To prep for my interview, I sourced questions from Facebook and Twitter to add to my list. During our conversation, I discovered that Andrew and Kevin are amazing storytellers who not only answered all the questions, but also dove deep into how they engage each other on stage as well as their intimate connections with the audience.  "We bring them on stage with us!" Andrew and Kevin were born and raised in the UK. They were professional gymnasts for 17 years before transitioning to aerialists at Cirque du Soleil for 16 years so far with no sign of slowing down. In fact, they both recently decided to create a new show and move to New York City in 2016. (They will be announcing details and sharing behind-the-scenes updates with you via the News section of their brand new website - a collaboration between Athertons and Feisworld!) Dergin Tokmak caught polio as a very young boy. The disease could not slow him down forever, though. His crutches are an integral part of his acrobatic performances. Joining the Cirque du Soleil propelled him to global stardom. As he says himself: "I may not be able to walk, but I have at least learned to fly a bit". Dergin Tokmak hopes to inspire people and to show them that anyone can be creative - regardless of their physical limitations. Dergin was just 8 months old when his parents took him back to visit their home village in Turkey. While he was there he contracted polio and lost the use of his legs. He spent most of his childhood and youth going to clinics, physiotherapy and schools for the disabled. When he was 12, his life changed after seeing a dancer on crutches in a breakdance film. He began to hang out with the hip-hop crowd in his home town of Augsburg and began to train for his first dance roles. His 6-year stint as the Lame Angel in Cirque du Soleil's show "Varekai" remains a unique achievement.
