Dean's chat Co-hosts, Doctors Jeffrey Jensen and Johanna Richey interview the founders of the non-profit CMC STEPS (Collaborative Medical Content- Student Transatlantic Education Podiatric Surgery) whose mission is to enhance the educational experience of podiatric medical students across the world! Tune in as we discuss their unique friendship that has withstood the test of time. Doctors Christina Pratt, Mark Razzante, and Coleman Clougherty all went to undergraduate University together at John Carroll University where they quickly became lifelong friends. They then all obtained their Master's degree in Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University. Mark and Chrissy received their doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Samuel Merritt University in Oakland California, While Coleman received his doctorate from Kent State- Ohio School of Podiatric Medicine. Their paths reunited during residency when Dr. Razzante and Dr. Clougherty became co-residents completing their 3 year surgical training program with St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland, and Dr. Pratt completed her surgical training with The Cleveland Clinic, Mercy Health, and Akron General Hospitals. Join us as we explore “all things podiatric medicine” including forging international ties, breaking down barriers to provide more opportunities for students, and the growing pains associated with developing a non-profit organization. As current faculty with Samuel Merritt University, we discuss different educational styles and how sometimes learning can be most effective with a combination of complementary teaching styles. Dr. Mark Razzante, Dr. Christina Pratt, and Dr. Coleman Clougherty emphasize the importance of persistence in their teaching styles, noting that despite challenges like low initial viewership for their online sessions, they persevered and continued to provide educational content. This persistence paid off over time as their audience grew, allowing them to impact more students. Moreover, they stress the significance of transparency in their teaching approach. They mention the importance of being open and honest with students to create a comfortable and safe learning environment. Dr. Pratt specifically highlights the value of transparency in academic settings, where students can easily detect insincerity or lack of authenticity. By being transparent, the doctors aim to establish trust with their students, fostering better communication and understanding. The collaboration among the educators extends beyond the classroom to hands-on workshops and virtual sessions. By combining their strengths and expertise, they create engaging and interactive learning opportunities for students. Dr. Coleman highlighted the value of hands-on workshops and practical demonstrations, which allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting. This experiential learning approach can deepen students' understanding and retention of the material. Overall, the collaborative efforts of Dr. Mark, Dr. Christina, and Dr. Coleman showcase how different teaching styles can work together harmoniously to enhance the educational experience for students. By leveraging their individual strengths and approaches, they create a dynamic learning environment that caters to diverse learning preferences and fosters student engagement and success. In the podcast episode, the founders of the CMC Foundation shared their journey of being open to new opportunities and their willingness to adapt, which led to impactful initiatives and growth in the field of podiatric medicine. Join us as Dean's chat co-hosts Doctors Jeff Jensen and Johanna Richey interview Dr. Matthew Cobb and Dr. Haywan Chiu, founders of the Foot and Ankle Surgical Academy. Dr. Cobb received his doctorate of podiatric medicine from the California School of Podiatric Medicine with Samuel Merritt University in Oakland in 2005. He went on to complete his 3-year surgical residency training program with Kaiser Permanente's San Francisco, Bay Area Foot, and Ankle Residency program. Dr. Haywan Chiu received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and did his doctorate of Podiatric medicine at Temple University. He completed his 3-year surgical residency program with DVA Palo Alto Podiatry residency program and Stanford University. Dr. Matt Cobb and Dr. Haywan Chiu discuss their experiences in podiatry and the development of the academy, providing valuable resources for students, residents, and faculty. Dr. Cobb specializes in reconstructive surgery with a focus on pediatrics, bringing a unique perspective to the field. Tune in to learn more about their journey and the impact of the academy on the podiatric community. Dr. Cobb and Dr. Chiu (along with 2 of their colleagues) began recording their surgeries to share with their students and residents to facilitate distance learning. They hoped to keep their residents engaged in learning surgical procedures even if they were not able to be physically present in the operating room due to pandemic restrictions/limitations. Listen as they describe their experiences with adaptability, flexibility, and leaning into technology to help advance surgical education. We discuss how vulnerability can help broaden opportunities and break down barriers to quality education. The Foot and Ankle Surgery Academy, also known as FASA, was established during the COVID-19 pandemic in response to the challenges faced by students, residents, and faculty in podiatric medicine. Dr. Matt Cobb and Dr. Haywan Chiu, the founders, recognized the impact of the pandemic on surgical training, with elective surgeries being canceled and limited opportunities for residents to gain hands-on experience in the operating room. This led to the idea of creating a platform where surgical procedures could be filmed and shared with the podiatric community. The primary goal of FASA is to provide educational resources through video compilations of various surgeries, accompanied by voiceovers from the primary surgeons. The videos aim to offer a detailed insight into the decision-making process, techniques, and nuances of podiatric surgeries. The founders emphasize showcasing not only the technical aspects of surgery but also the thought process behind each step. The creation of FASA allowed for a unique learning experience for students, residents, and faculty. The videos provided a visual representation of surgeries, allowing viewers to observe the procedures in detail. The platform also offered a space for discussion and reflection on different approaches to surgery, highlighting the importance of decision-making and adaptability in the operating room. Dr. Cobb and Dr. Chiu also discuss how the ability to make sound decisions during surgery is crucial, as it can determine the overall success of the procedure. They shared examples of cases where high-risk decisions led to positive outcomes, showcasing the significance of thoughtful and strategic decision-making in surgical practice. Dr. Cobb shares a valuable insight from his mentor, Shannon Rush, who emphasized the importance of stepping in right before a mistake is made that cannot be fixed. This highlights the critical role of experienced surgeons in guiding residents and younger surgeons to make the right decisions during procedures. Dr. Cobb's experience with Dr. Rush exemplifies how mentorship and guidance from seasoned professionals can shape a surgeon's decision-making process and ultimately lead to better outcomes for patients. The discussion also touched on the challenge of maintaining focus and presence during surgeries, with Dr. Cobb and Dr. Chiu emphasizing the need for residents to stay engaged and attentive throughout the entire procedure. They highlighted the potential consequences of zoning out or losing focus, underscoring the importance of being mentally present and focused on the task at hand to ensure successful surgical outcomes. They also share a personal experience where he and his colleague would remind residents not to zone out during surgeries, especially during critical moments like organ closures. He stressed the impact of losing focus, mentioning the potential consequences such as infections and compromised outcomes due to laziness or distraction. Dr. Chiu mentioned the challenge of teaching this mental integration component, as it goes beyond technical skills and requires a deep level of concentration and mindfulness. The discussion touched on the concept of neuroplasticity and focus, highlighting the variability in individuals' abilities to maintain focus for extended periods. https://explorepodmed.org/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine? Active and fun are rarely the first words associated with medical education, but today's Raise the Line guest, Dr. Amin Azzam, contends learners get the most value when they can engage with their education rather than passively receive knowledge. As Azzam relates to host Hillary Acer, the vice president of Strategic Operations at Osmosis, he remembers first seeing the power of active learning while observing a class of med students as a psychiatry resident. “I sat behind a one-way mirror and watched these students leading their own small-group learning and it was just palpably infectious how excited they were to learn medicine.” In the ensuing years, Azzam has happily been utilizing and developing active learning strategies as a professor at three Bay Area universities and in his role as Faculty Engagement Coordinator at Osmosis, one of many key roles he has played as a longtime team member. One of his most impactful creative strokes was creating the first medical school course dedicated to improving the quality of health information on Wikipedia, both providing a unique learning experience and improving health content that has been viewed 88 million times by people around the world. Speaking of global impact, he's also been instrumental in Osmosis initiatives to facilitate learning by medical students in war-torn Syria and refugees seeking medical care. Check out this lively and fascinating look at learner-centric education and the power of providing opportunities for students to do social good while learning. With the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Benson, he was able to grow and develop the necessary skills to take on the role of dean. Dr. Stamps highlights how mentors played a crucial role in his professional development, helping him navigate the transition from being an associate dean to becoming the dean. Dr. Leada Malek is a licensed physical therapist and board-certified sports specialist located in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is one of the 9% of therapists in the US who are specialized in sports therapy. She received her doctorate degree from Samuel Merritt University and completed her bachelors degree from the University of San Francisco in Exercise & Sport Science. She completed her graduate internship with Stanford University's varsity athletics and has since continued to work in the outpatient setting treating a variety of patients. Dr. Malek uses a combined approach of manual therapy and specific therapeutic exercise to help her patients move better, perform better, and compete again. She is passionate about using a variety of modalities including cup therapy and the TRX system to get creative with her care. She believes in retraining the body as a whole, and not just the area of discomfort. She has worked with patients of all ages and has treated professional dancers, athletes, weekend warriors, and young athletes. She is a volunteer physical therapist for triathlons and local semi-professional soccer and basketball teams. Her professional insight has been featured in numerous media outlets including Popsugar, Healthline, SELF, Livestrong, and Thrive Global. Contrary to popular misconceptions, physical medicine & rehabilitation (PM&R) doctors are different from physical therapists (PT). I (a PM&R doctor) loved having this conversation with Leada (a PT) because we often work together to treat patients. This type of teamwork is what first drew me to this field of medicine. In this episode we discuss:A typical physical therapy appointment or visitWorking through pain with physical therapyWhy mindset mattersTiming of physical therapyTranslating physical therapy to a virtual platformCost concerns related to therapyThe podcast episodes drop weekly on Mondays in seasonal chunks.
