Lisa began her Pilates journey in 2001 whilst living in Los Angeles.2003 Lisa trained at the Physicalmind Institute in Los Angeles and New York. Returning to Australia in 2006, her passion for learning and a desire to further explore Joseph Pilates' work led her to Sally Anderson, the Founder and Director of Pilates International (PilatesITC). Lisa has a vibrant personality and infectious passion for Pilates and movement that resonates in all that she does. Her teaching philosophy is client-centric, emphasising correct movement patterning, posture awareness, and general well-being. She is dedicated to seeing growth and change both for her clients and any teachers she is mentoring. In this Conversation, Katie and Lisa discuss bone health and osteoporosis. They cover topics such as the importance of bone health, the differences between osteoporosis and osteopenia, factors that affect bone density, and exercises to avoid or modify for individuals with low bone density. They also emphasize the need for ongoing exercise and lifestyle choices to maintain bone health. Takeaways Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disorder characterized by compromised bone strength, while osteopenia refers to low bone density. Factors that affect bone density include genetics, lifestyle choices, age, and hormonal changes. Maintaining bone health requires regular exercise, particularly weight-bearing and resistance exercises, as well as a balanced diet. Individuals with low bone density should avoid or modify exercises that involve loaded flexion, rotation, or lateral flexion. It is important to address bone health early in life and continue to prioritize it throughout all stages of life. Avoid loaded flexion exercises for individuals with osteoporosis Focus on strength training, impact training, and balance/core work for bone health Incorporate upright work and add weight to stimulate bone mineral density Empower individuals with poor bone density to enjoy movement and incorporate loaded exercises Continuously learn and adapt in the Pilates journey Connect with Lisa Jackson Social Media: @lisajacksonpilates Website: https://lisajacksonpilates.com.au Take advantage of your FREE gift! In this episode, Michel is joined by Josh Johnson, stand-up comedian, Emmy-nominated writer (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), performer, and NAACP award-winner from Louisiana, for a conversation about how to turn pain into creative output. An award-winning global director of cirque, cinema and stage. As a comic act designer he specializes in clowns, characters and story components. Stefan is the author of The Power of HA!Connecting Through the Heart of Humor. He studied theatre in college only to realize that his true passion lay in the cross-over to the circus arts, so he set his sights on Cirque du Soleil. As a result of his intuitive gift for mining actors' true potential, various sit-coms hired him to coach actors, including The Roseanne Show. After self-producing a number of critically acclaimed plays in Hollywood and New York City (Call of the Wild, Midsummer Nite's Text, Your Town Follies, Moon Over Madness, Atomic Holiday Lift-Off) he traveled to Europe to juggle on the streets and study with the premiere master-teacher, Philippe Gaulier. This move resulted in a collaboration with Bill Irwin and David Shiner on the Tony- winning show Fool Moon. Haves was then poached by Cirque du Soleil, collaborating on clown and character performances within six touring and resident productions (Kooza, Iris, Amaluna, Banana Shpeel, Zaya, and Drawn to Life). Prior to that, he wrote and directed the world-class Teatro Zinzanni—a dinner/ cabaret featuring such luminaries as Joan Baez. Today, Stefan Haves is a trusted international thought-leader who was tapped to present a TedX Talk in New Delhi, India, and was invited to conduct personal appearances for blue-chip companies like PepsiCo, Infosys, Mindtree, and Barclays Bank. He gleefully shares his innovative message on the role of humor, creativity, and effective expression gleaned from the stage and applied to the corporate workplace. In 2021 Haves was granted the opportunity to co-direct Katy Perry's Playland-branded New Year's dinner/cirque event at Hilton's Resort World in Las Vegas. Earlier in his career, Haves cut his teeth as an actor and a visual-comedian who appeared on stages and television shows worldwide—even garnering $10,000 on America's Funniest People by performing his signature piece "Back-Man". Stefan's 2016 original conception of the spectacle Festigal, in which Haves was tasked to showcase famous pop celebrities from television's Romania's Got Talent, used a Cirque du Soleil aesthetic in a stadium setting. His cinematic offerings include the award-winning short film Punch Drunk, featuring Academy Award nominee Sally Kellerman (M*A*S*H) and full-length feature Stalled starring Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth).
Adelaide Drummer/Percussionist PAUL BUTLER joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey which began at an early age due to being born into a musical family. Paul's parents had been performing for many years and through their involvement in the industry, it was a given that he too would follow this path. As a child, Paul was fascinated with drums, and he first began to play them when Steve Staben offered to teach him. He was 10 years old when he first began playing at church services, and in year 6 he began taking drum lessons with Don Crook, his teacher at Sunrise Primary School and Temple Christian College, through to year 11. Paul joined his first band (away from the church) 'Spank n Funk' when he was in high school, he also began teaching after having done work experience with Don. In year 12 he began to study percussion with acclaimed teacher Jim Bailey, helping him to prepare for auditioning for The Adelaide Elder Conservatorium of Music. Jim Bailey was the Head of Percussion at the Elder Conservatorium, where Paul successfully gained the David Galliver Memorial scholarship and won a number of prizes at national percussion eisteddfods. Paul was percussion section leader of The Elder Conservatorium Wind Ensemble, and member of The Symphony Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble. Paul completed his study achieving his Bachelor of Music and Honors in Percussion Performance. Jim mentioned that the Band of the South Australia Police were looking for someone for an upcoming event and asked Paul if he would be interested which of course he was. Paul enjoying playing with them and when he heard that they had an opening he successfully auditioned. Paul worked with the band for 7 years and during this time he gave workshops to schools, performed at numerous state events and official government ceremonies in a variety of groups, Parade Band, Wind Orchestra, Dixie Band, Big Band, Rock Patrol, School Beat Band and Percussion Ensemble. Highlights include the Sensational Adelaide Police Tattoo 2006, the Commonwealth Bank Police Tattoo 2008, Musikschau der Nationen 2008 in Bremen, Germany, and the Basel Tattoo 2010 in Switzerland. Paul has also played the corporate and club scene of Adelaide; he was resident percussionist at Savvy Bar and Vodka Bar. He has also performed with: The Baker Boys, The Revue, Bloky's Boys, The Attack, Wasabi, The Shizzle, Triple Score, Astronaut 7 Mammoth Logic, Squeaker, Porkie Pies, Matt Winter Band, and The Rules. As a freelance artist he has worked with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Arts Orchestra and played numerous shows throughout the Adelaide Fringe Festival, WOMADelaide, Cabaret Festival, and Feast Festival, alongside such names as Jon English, Todd McKenney, Cameron Daddo, and Julie Anthony. Paul's introduction to 'Cirque du Soleil' was through Ben Todd who had been performing with the company and suggested he audition. Paul auditioned but wasn't successful, a few months later he was invited to audition again, this time he was, so he gave the military band his notice, packed up and went overseas to join his first Cirque show 'Corteo'. Paul was with that show for 5 years touring through Europe, South America, Central America, and Mexico. He then auditioned for KOOZA, and was on that show for 3 years touring Australia, Asia, Singapore, China, Korea, and Europe. Paul joined KURIOS after another audition and was excited to be touring with this show as they were bringing the show to his hometown Adelaide in 2020. They performed in Sydney and Brisbane before remaining dates were postponed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Paul will be re-joining Cirque overseas early in the new year. Surprising and even shocking admissions from hosts Jeremy and Lee. These are the stories they’ve never shared until now.
The global circus phenomenon Cirque du Soleil was born in 1984 when a group of street performers in Quebec bought a big top tent and went on tour. Lucy Burns speaks to Cirque du Soleil co-founder Gilles Ste-Croix, who walked 56 miles on stilts to raise money for the show. In our very first episode, we sit down with Christian Fitzharris who developed and played the unforgettable mini-fez wearing clown in Cirque du Soleil's KOOZA. We'll go behind the scenes of the audition and casting process and hear how Cirque comes up with the look of its clowns, from their unique makeup to their memorable costumes. You'll also hear a wide range of stories from the first time he put on makeup to what it was like to perform in front of 100 inmates behind bars. Knowing Miguel Berlanga, Spanish actor, from Valladolid has been a gift to my soul. I laughed during the 40 minutes of the interview and understood that being happy is an attitude, that great challenges have their difficulties, but when you achieve your goal, every sacrifice was worth it... I learned that from a clown. Miguel has participated in dozens of plays, in television series and has also made films in Spain. Today is enjoying one of his biggest dreams: to be part of Cirque du Soleil. Kooza will be in Perth until the 11th of June at the Belmont Park Racecourse. Do not miss the opportunity to laugh and go back to being children. For more information: https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/australia/perth/shows
The only time I ever went to the circus was easily ten years ago, somewhere in Melbourne where I remember only feeling a little bad for the animals on display there. My second outing to the circus being this, I must say, that no animals were harmed in Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza; apart from if you count the man dressed as a dog who urinated on an audience member at one stage. I go into Kooza having a background in Theatre myself, both in acting, design and technologies such as lighting and sound. What Kooza does brilliantly isn’t just a circus act, but also a brilliantly staged and designed theatre act, which encompasses live music and a story which doesn’t need to told, instead, shown. The story of Kooza itself is about a boy in rags, who has a kite which closely resembles what he wears; grey, lifeless, and sagging. As he fails to send it high into the sky, a package is delivered to him, a jack in a box which comes alive, and transforms the world the boy resides in. The first act of the play is split into different aspects of Circus acts, including aerial hoops, contortionists, and a unicycle duo. Kooza drip feeds excitement and danger, backending each circus act with a comedy sketch, including audience members twice. Each audience member brought up acted along well, however the second man by the name of Zach did so well, he earned more applause than the actual comedians themselves. The story progresses, as each act is brought out by the use of a wand, which when timed well gives the idea that pure magic is being used on stage, as the band plays to the shifts in the stage, curtains, and movement of actors. In the climax of act one, the wand drops, and a darkness encompasses the stage. Returning to act two, the overall feeling and design of the production shifts. Purple and black costumes and lights shine as skeletal characters emerge, mimicking Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday which is famous for its beautiful yet haunting skeleton designs and costumes. The acts as well become more dangerous, including balancing acts, a teeterboard, and easily the best part of the show, the Wheel of Death, which is metal pendulum with two circles on either side, in where two performers jump, move and skip rope as they cause the crowd to gasp and cover their eyes. My only gripe with Kooza is the conclusion of the production, which is resolved quite simply, the boy being given a new pair of clothes, and a fresh kite to fly. The actual Day of the Dead invasion into the play's design is not resolved however; the dropping of the wand seemed to me as the dark part of the play, and as the original cast run and shriek from the arrival of the skeletons, it is confusing why the situation isn’t resolved. Do they just go on living in a different world, and if not, how did they return to the act one world? However, putting aside the small problem, Kooza was a brilliant display of theatre, circus and music combined into one action packed performance. It is sure to thrill anyone who has a sense of adventure, and also anyone with an urge to explore international cultures such as Day of the Dead, which Cirque de Soleil celebrates with its production of Kooza.
