ESP was founded in 2015 by Timothy Moss. The band's concept and music was inspired by Timothy's  travels in the Middle East and events in the US.  The band's first release, “Call To Arms” was produced by Wyn Davis at Total Access Recording Studios in Redondo Beach, CA . The release on Starwest Entertainment Records was well received and garnered industry interest. After the pandemic it was decided to reconfigure the band with top industry talent for the next release.  With help from Wyn Davis and Steve Ornest, Tim “Ripper” Owens (vocals formerly with Judas Priest), Vinny Appice (drums formerly with  Axis, Dio, and Black Sabbath) and Jo Jo Brown (guitars)  joined Timothy in California to record “Digital Soldiers”.  The songs written by Timothy Moss and Jo Jo Brown were greatly enhanced  with the addition of Ripper and Vinny.  Their professionalism helped take the band to the new level the group was seeking. After the release of  “Digital Soldiers”  a new touring line up was needed.  Sean Salinas, a multi-product endorsed artist (Promark Drumsticks, Evans Drumheads, and Diril Cymbals) and former drummer for two productions with Cirque du Soleil (KA and Zumanity) joined the group.  The combination of Sean's incredible drumming  with Timothy's bass playing provided the solid foundation.  Jo Jo Brown's unique signature playing and writing style was a catalyst and perfect fit for the band.  Kris Keyes, formerly with Gargantua Soul and Dive Bomber, joined as lead singer.  Kris has appeared with his band on the Rage Against the Machine tour and performed at Woodstock 1999 .   At different times these artists have appeared on shows with Korn, Megadeath, and Stone Temple Pilots, to name a few. My guest today worked for Club Med from 1997 to 2001 as a Costume designer. She was sent to Club Med Sandpiper in 1997 for a stage, but her first season was in 1997/1998 in Club Med Playa Blanca. She is from my hometown of Montreal, so please help me give a warm welcome to, Sophie Boyer! Sophie worked in such villages as Turks and Caicos, St. Lucia, Paradise Island, and Columbus Isle. Sophie went to school for Theater Production (props, lights, sound, set, and costume design), but it was costume design that she really gravitated towards. Her father saw an ad that Club Med was hiring, she applied and was hired!! Playa Blanca in 1997/1998 with Houria Osmani as the CDV, was her most magical season and Sophie has many stories from this cherished time in her life. My favorite story of hers is the award that she won at the end-of-the-season Awards Show! Sophie was at Turks in Caicos in 1998 with the CDV LouLou, Gus as Chief of Animation, and Hendel as Chief of Sports and yes, we talk about that season too. Sophie met her share of celebrities during her time on Columbus Isle from 2000-2001. She met Antonio Sabàto Jr., Thierry Lhermitte, Mitsou, Claude Charlebois, Corey Hart and Julie Masse! After Club Med, Sophie worked for Cirque du Soleil from 2002-2020. She worked as a costume maker for Cirque du Soleil on such shows as Love, Ka, Zumanity, and Ovo, just to name a few and we will talk about that as well. Please enjoy this episode with Sophie! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. 360 Vegas
360 Vegas Reviews: Mad Apple

360 Vegas

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 8, 2023 26:49

So this is actually the first Cirque show I've reviewed for the podcast. I've seen several Cirque shows; the wife is a big fan. Our first trip to Vegas together included The Beatles - Love, which I really need to revisit. Maybe Tony will go with me, since he really should see it. Since that first trip we took together, my wife and I have seen “O”, Mystere, as well as Zumanity. Confession time: I liked Zumanity. I think we saw it twice. I was definitely disappointed when I heard it was going away. But we really like Cirque, and we like New York- New York. We've never stayed there, but we always end up hanging out there. So I was very interested in what we were going to get when Mad Apple was announced. I heard a lot of buzz that it was “not your typical Cirque show,” which actually made me really nervous because that's also what they were saying about “R.U.N.” and that show was apparently a giant belly flop…    Not the best photo, but she was hanging by her hair. By her hair! To me, it's kind of funny that since I started doing these reviews, it's pushed me to sort of have a greater sense of urgency to see new shows so I can review them for the podcast. We made an effort to see Rouge at the Strat, Miss Behave's Mavericks, and Mad Apple all within a few months of their opening so that I could get the review content for the show. Anyway, I snagged tickets for a trip in July, and we really enjoyed the show. One of the things I like about Cirque shows is that since I'm a cheap bastard, it's actually often better to sit back a ways so that you can take it all in. In fact, out of all the Cirque shows I've seen, none of them really benefit from front row seats. So there's a frugal Vegas tip for you.    If you ever saw Zumanity, Mad Apple is in the same theater. From the audience perspective, the theater doesn't really look that different from the time that Zumanity was there. One cool thing is the bar at the end of the stage. So the stage looks like a regular stage, but it has this part that sticks out into the audience, which is actually called a “thrust stage.” Insert joke here about parts that stick out and thrusting. So at the end of the stage, there's now this half circle bar, and you can go up to the bar and order drinks for yourself before the show starts. When the show begins, there's a cover for the bar that's lowered down so it just becomes part of the stage.    I don't remember. I just remember laughing my ass off. The show itself isn't your typical Cirque show. I would describe it as “intro to Cirque.” It has the acrobatics, but it's not all acrobatics, and it doesn't have the weird French-Canadian stuff that's all over “O” and Mystere. What it does have is live singers and a live band. A few years back, word was that Cirque du Soleil was moving away from live musicians, so that was a pleasant surprise. It also features 3 different comedians throughout the show, which gives the show a chance to breathe.    I think Mad Apple - while not a show for kids due to the humor - is a show for younger adults, or those who might be bored by the more traditional Cirque material. (Seriously, I think it was purely my confusion keeping me awake during “O”.) I try really hard to keep politics away from my Vegas discussions, because Vegas is my escape. However, it should be noted that this is a show that celebrates the bluest city in the bluest state. It's not too in your face, but I've seen complaints online about some of the content. New York City's population leans left on average, so the show, in that spirit, is going to lean left a little. This shouldn't be shocking, but apparently some people were nonetheless clutching their pearls. Consider yourselves warned.   Feel the thrust of the stage. The format of Mad Apple is more like a variety show than anything else. Between the aerialists, the singers, and the comedians, it feels almost like Ka and Absinthe had a baby, but it's a beautiful baby. I'll be the first to admit that I have a short attention span; even more so when I'm in Vegas, and the way Mad Apple frequently switches up the content works for me, and is a great blend of funny, amazing, and musical talent.   I enjoyed all three of the comedians. There's a Little Person comedian, an absolutely hilarious Jewish guy, and someone who is a virtuoso with shadow puppets. From what I've been reading, most of the people who are complaining about the show are complaining about being offended by the comedians, which to me is a pretty good indicator that they're funny as shit. I've been told that the writers and producer of Mad Apple gave the comedians free reign, so their routines aren't run through the corporate filter. If you're easily offended by naughty words, you should find a different Cirque show (and maybe a different podcast).  One of the things I liked about the variety show format is that the traditional Cirque acts seemed to stand out more. An aerialist couple who hang from straps were previously part of Absinthe, and their number flourishes in the bigger space. There is another aerialist who swings around the stage while hanging from her hair, which probably accelerated my male pattern baldness just by witnessing it. There's a huge, impressive set piece called the “Wheel of Death” which is best seen live, rather than me attempting to describe it.    Showoff. Let's discuss the A.F.F. or Audience Fuckery Factor for Mad Apple. Cirque shows are reasonably easy on the audience, and Mad Apple is similar. However, having the comedians involved means that if you're sitting in the first few rows, you run the risk of being singled out, exactly like being at a comedy club. Of course, you're going to take my advice and save some money and get a better view of the whole production by sitting further back, so this won't be an issue for you.    If you are taking someone to their first Cirque show - especially someone who might roll their eyes at the idea of a Cirque show - Mad Apple is a great middle ground show, the mixes up the content but doesn't compromise on the quality. Thinking about it later, I found a certain irony in a show about the city that is home to Broadway (New York) is in actuality structurally perfect for the city it calls home: Las Vegas. Mad Apple is performed twice nightly at New York New York at 7:00 and 9:30, but is dark Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tickets start at $69 (which is probably more appropriate for its predecessor, Zumanity) and can be purchased via the link to Vegas.com in the website or here in the show notes.       You can find Josh on twitter @vegasjaydubs

Then in October Z Chromosome, a short film starring Arias and directed by Manfred (Thierry) Mugler opened the 18th Annual Festival Chéries-Chéris in Paris. From outrageous performances at seminal New York nightclubs Jackie 60 and Squeezebox to the now-legendary nights at Bar d'O where he held court with Raven-O and Sherry Vine, Arias has distinguished himself with scandalous wit, sleek style and an extraordinary voice… evocative of Lady Day yet uniquely his own.It was no surprise when Arias was tapped by Cirque du Soleil to originate the role of the emcee in their Las Vegas spectacular Zumanity, for which he co-wrote 3 songs. After 6 years in that role, Arias returned to New York where he became star and co-creator of Arias With a Twist with master puppeteer Basil Twist. The show was a critical and commercial hit and extended repeatedly for a total of 8 months at HERE Arts Center. The show has been subsequently presented in Los Angeles, Washington DC and Paris and returned to New York for another critically acclaimed, encore 8-week run at Abrons Arts Center in Fall 2011. The “Arias With A Twist” docu-fantasy premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and had it's US premiere at the 2011 TriBeca Film Festival. In 2010 Arias returned to New York City with his first full-length concerts in over a decade. This week's storytellers are one-woman stunt show Martika, drag performer Edie, Broadway actor & singer Kimberly JaJuan, and magician Rudy Coby. In this episode all the stories are tied together with a theme of "Origin Stories."   Martika: How She Went From Working in Veterinary Science to Performing Full Time The first story is told by Martika, an international variety entertainer based in Kansas City, MO. and is the C.E.O. of KC Entertainment Services, LLC. Having left a career as a veterinary technician more than ten years ago, she's toured the world solo, performing fire art stunts, escapes, and other sideshow danger acts. In fact, she's Kansas City's only woman sword swallower, and the only one woman show of this kind in the Midwest! She also teaches a variety of workshops in these disciplines establishing her even further as an expert. In her story, Martika tells about how she left a career in veterinary sciences to pursue a career in the entertainment world. Here's where you can find out more about Martika:  Martika's Website:  https://themartikashow.com/ Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/themartikashow/ Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/martikamd   Edie: How the Character of Edie Was Created The second story is told by Edie, is a stage performer, dancer, actor, and drag performer most notably known for portraying the Emcee of Cirq du Soliel's Zumanity. In this story, we hear about how the character of Edie was created almost as if by accident! Here's where you can find out more info about Edie: Youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/user/tobiandpearl Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/edie_entertainer/ Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/edie.entertainer/ Twitter:  https://twitter.com/edieentertainer   Kimberly JaJuan: Creating the Character Lisette in Marie Christine The third story is told by Kimberly JaJuan, a singer and actor both on and off Broadway. She's a graduate of The Eastman School and of Julliard School earning both Bachelor's and Masters Degrees. Some of her more notable (and favorite) roles have been Singing with Gloria Estefan and Harry Connick, Jr. at the Papal visit at Madison Square Garden, portraying the role of Sarah in Ragtime on Broadway, and creating the role of Lisette alongside classmate Audra McDonald in Marie Christine. Most recently she could have been seen bringing Hercules to life with the Public Works at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. She's a long time member and manager of Broadway Inspirational Voices, a diverse, professional choir of broadway artists, united to change lives through the power of music and service. She's also a broadway investor debuting as an Associate Producer on productions like American Son, Ain’t Too Proud, and Hadestown to name a few. In her story, Kimberly talks about creating the character Lisette in the show Marie Christine.   Rudy Coby: Fond & Funny Memories Performing in the Original Cast of The Lion King on Broadway The final story comes from Rudy Coby, AKA Lab Man. This week's storytellers are Greg Triggs, Edie, Ran'D Shine, Tom Ameen, and Suzanne. In this episode you'll hear stories about "Entertainers In Real Life." How our art can have a profound effect on people after the show is over, and entertainers having to perform after receiving difficult news.  You'll hear about an unexpected gesture of gratitude from someone who saw the previous night's show, a heartfelt letter to the cast of Cirque du Soliel's Zumanity, a mild stalker situation, and two stories about having to perform a show after receiving tough news…losing a loved one, and receiving a cancer diagnosis.  The first story comes from Greg Triggs, a show director, writer, and improv sketch artist who's appeared with top sketch comedy troupes like The Brave New Workshop in Minneapolis and the Who, What, and Warehouse at Disney's Comedy Warehouse in Orlando. Greg tells us about a time when having a great show helped him get his car fixed, a time when something he said rubbed an audience member the wrong way, and what he learned about being true to his audience.   The second story comes from Edie, a stage performer, dancer, and actor, most notably known for portraying the Emcee of Cirq du Soliel's Zumanity. In this story, Edie talks about when the cast of Zumanity received a touching, heartfelt letter from an audience member. The third storyteller is Ran'D Shine, the face of the new millennium magician who's magic has taken him around the world from Cape Town South Africa performing his one-man show, "Mysterious Ways," to Presidential Inauguration banquets at the White House. Listen to RanD talk about audience members that really believe the entertainers really have special powers, and how easy it is to pick up a stalker.  Our fourth story comes from Tom Ameen who is is a Billboard Topping Pianist that's collaborated with top names in the industry like Jim Brickman and has frequently performed at many of JJ Abrams' private events. His most recent album is Stories From The Sea (Inspired by “The Outlaw Ocean” a book by Ian Urbina which is out now and can be purchased and streamed wherever you listen to your music. In this short story, Tom talks about having to perform a concert just after losing a beloved pet.  Our final story comes from Suzanne. Suzanne is a wonderfully talented magician based in Minnesota. She's a favorite performer at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, and fooled Penn & Teller on their show, Fool Us. In her story, she talks about having to perform a show after receiving a cancer diagnosis earlier that day.  Here's where you can find out more about this week's storytellers.  Greg Triggs Greg's Website Broadway's Next Hit Musical Strategic Entertainment NYC Edie Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube Ran'D Shine  randyshine.com Tom Ameen Tom's Website Tom's New Album Suzanne  SuzMagic.com Do you have comments, suggestions, or want to share your own stories? This week's storytellers are Graeme Reed, Christopher Campbell FenyxFyre, Magic Mike Brooks, and Edie. In this episode we feature stories that surround a theme of "The Painful & The Surreal." You'll hear stories involving a "smash & stab" trick gone wrong, a fire performer unexpectedly catching on fire during his act, a kid's party babysitting fire, and a literal shipwreck. The first story comes from Graeme Graemazing Reed, a "Level 7 Wizard" who doesn't take himself too seriously and has been mastering the virtual show arena. He's also co host to the Magicians Talking Magic podcast. Graeme tells us about a time when the infamous "smash & stab" trick went painfully wrong.  The second story comes from Christopher Campbell FenyxFyre, an awe-inspiring entertainer who's a master of the fire arts and other side-show disciplines. He's been wowing audiences with performances that must be seen to be believed for over a decade. As the innovator of insanity, he defies the brain and awakens curiosity. Listen to him telling about the time he actually caught on fire during his fire act. The third storyteller is Magic Mike Brooks. Offering a wide variety of services from hypnosis, large-scale stage illusions, mentalism, and even close up strolling magic, Mike has become the premier choice for this kind of entertainment in and around Ohio. Here he is telling about a kids party babysitting fire. Our final story comes from Edie, a stage performer, dancer, and actor, most notably known for portraying the Emcee of Cirq du Soliel's Zumanity. Vegas happened basically right after Dallas. Talking about blues grass band The Dead South, doing Vegas somewhat affordably, heart health and THANKSGIVING. Aside from history I hope we take a pause and think about what we are thankful for vs what we don't have. I am grateful for the opportunity to hang out with Momo and see a band she loves and learn about The Dead South and Blue Grass via experience. We weren't able to see Le Rêve, Atomic Saloon, Miss Behave Gameshow, Absinthe, Zumanity, or Opium but you can only do so much in so many evenings. Let's be real. I am human, not bionic lol. We had a great time, got to stroll along the strip with beers in tow, and enjoyed each other's company. That is what holidays and traveling with friends is about. Togetherness. Having fun together. Learning new things about each other. Rolling with each others quirks. So grateful. Thanks for listening to my ramblings and experiences. I hope they give you a different perspective, a few chuckles, or both. Thank You! See you next episode! Ps this one is pretty long.

"When you have a dream, a powerful dream, and you realize it's never gonna happen, or the doors are closing, it's really hard to let it go." What is it like to be a dancer for Cirque du Soleil? And how do you get there? Stephan Choiniere reveals the dedication, imagination and collaboration it takes to become a featured performer for one of the world's most famous artistic experiences on this episode of Awakened Nation. This deep conversation reveals the years of preparation, waiting and belief in your dreams it takes to become one of the world's best dancers. About Stephan Choiniere Stephan Choiniere (pronounced Shwan Yare), dedicated himself to theatrical arts from training as an elite gymnast, acrobatic dancer, aerial artist, circus act choreographer, stunt man, and model. Among his most distinguished creations is being the designer and performer of two featured acts for Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas production of Zumanity. Stephan holds a degree in fine arts from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia while attending Temple University on a gymnastics scholarship. After his competition years as an NCAA gymnast, Stephan trained in a variety of dance disciplines in order to fuse more sophisticated choreography with acrobatics. About Brad Szollose: First things, first. How do you say Szollose? It’s pronounced zol-us. From founding partner and CMO of K2 Design, Inc. the first Digital Agency to go public on NASDAQ to international leadership development expert, Brad Szollose has worked with household names like MasterCard, American Management Association and Tony Robbins, to create leadership training programs for a new generation. As a creative director, he has been the creative force behind hundreds of high-end corporate events, personal and consumer brands, and website launches. Brad is the recipient of the Corporate Identity Design Award and the Axiom Business Book Award along with various awards for website and print design. As a C-Level executive at K2, his unique management model was awarded the Arthur Andersen New York Enterprise Award for Best Practices in Fostering Innovation Amongst Employees (Workforce Culture). Brad continues to challenge the status quo with his new book, Liquid Leadership 2.0, and his new podcast, Awakened Nation™. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

“It’s a very weird job because you do all this work, and your whole life is engulfed in the show that you’re working on and every bit of attention to detail, and most of the people who come to the show have no idea that you exist… Most people know there’s carpenters, or there’s lighting people – but they don’t understand that there is somebody, who’s like a mystery person, that brings all of this together, and for some reason that attracted me. I want to be this person that does all this coordinating to bring everybody together to be able to create something every night, and I don’t need an applause.” This week I chatted with Caroline Watters, a Stage Manager for the innovative international circus arts company Cirque du Soleil. Caroline is currently touring Asia while stage managing on TORUK – The First Flight. Originally from Toronto, Caroline became attracted to the unexpected art of stage management while still in high school and received her BFA in Performance Production from Ryerson University in Toronto. The stage manager’s art is often hidden, beyond the sight or awareness of the audience, but ultimately there is a high potential for creativity on the grand scale of a live performance, and this is what drew Caroline to the work. After Ryerson, Caroline went on to obtain her MFA in Stage Management from Columbia University. While working in New York, her Broadway dream shifted to more immersive and complex productions, and shortly after graduation, she accepted an internship with Cirque du Soleil which lead to working as an Assistant Stage Manager on Zumanity. After the experience in Las Vegas, she joined the Cirque du Soleil touring production of Varekai as a Stage Manager, which lead her to joining the stage management team of TORUK. Cirque du Soleil has provided the scale and complexity that she has desired for stage managing; her final Masters thesis covered all aspects of Cirque du Soleil Stage Management. Themes from this episode include:  * The creativity of a stage manager – making the magic happen behind the curtain * Creativity in the context of a multi-national for-profit company * The rewards of being in a job that constantly puts you outside your comfort zone * Self care practice

Joey has performed all over the world, starred in the movie Too Wong Foo (and she dishes about the dearly departed Patrick Swayze which you need to HEAR to believe!), and we got to see her perform at Washington, DC's Level One with our good friend Sherry Vine. They put on a show to write home about and Dale, Steve & Scott chatted with them as soon as they left the stage. This is one backstage chat you do NOT want to miss! Sherry, who is always such a good sport when it comes to the Swish crew, tells us all about teaming up with comedienne/actress/singer (and frequent Swish guest) Margaret Cho and DJ Gomi on the new song, Sexting, which we play for you. What was once thought to be a sexual taboo a generation ago is now a commonly accepted sexual thought. However, this evolving change did not occur because of a declining moral society but instead it has been ignited by a more mature, studied, researched and dialogued society. Hence, this is the premise of Zumanity, a Cirque du Soleil production created three years ago that’s still playing at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. From corny penis-banana jokes to an erotic lesbian swim sequence, to an intense African Seductress dance, to a Cuban male stripper; this unique production brings conservative middle-Americans far closer to embracing their hidden inhibitions and curiosities about sexuality than ever before.
