With Courtney still working hard, André welcomes Sylvs (Shea Butter FC) to the pod!We start by reviewing the weekend's Women's Champions League (UWCL) matchups. We look at what went wrong for Arsenal, and discuss why Lyon's frontline is the best in the world. Then we begrudgingly discuss Chelsea's 4-1 loss to Barcelona. Sonia Bompastor got on our nerves, and we talk about why, and exactly how. Then we preview the second legs before switching focus to discuss the NWSL overall. Is the sudden formation of a big 4 (erm, 3) good or bad for the league? What does a successful team build look like? Does a salary cap really lead to parity? Plus how to instantly tell whether a rookie talent has a great chance at becoming great. After that, it's the return of Heated & Hyped. We're both frustrated by the NWSL and SafeSport, but end on a high note with the return of Big Fish and the WNBA regular season getting closer. Please subscribe, rate and review. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Firefighters are preparing for a return of dangerous winds that could again stoke the wildfires that have destroyed thousands of homes and killed at least 24 people in the Los Angeles area. Crews made some progress battling the flames this weekend. The relative calm Sunday allowed some people to return to previously evacuated areas.  CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Blue Origin has called off the debut launch of its massive new rocket because of technical trouble. The 320-foot rocket was supposed to blast off before dawn Monday with a prototype satellite from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Officials say Israel and Hamas appear to be inching closer to a phased ceasfire agreement. But a deal hasn’t been reached yet. And there are a number of obstacles that could scupper the talks in Qatar. HONG KONG (AP) — China’s exports in December grew at a faster pace than expected, as factories rushed to fill orders to beat higher tariffs that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose once he takes office. Exports rose 10.7% from a year earlier. TOKYO (AP) — A strong earthquake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 has rattled southwestern Japan.  After a freezing winter storm shut schools, cut power and cancelled or delayed flights, the South is slowly thawing. Warmer weather is melting snow and ice and letting crews restore power. Power is back in parts of North Carolina and South Carolina, where tens of thousands of customers lost electricity over the last few days. In Atlanta, about 1,000 flights were cancelled or delayed Saturday. Airport officials say all roadways and parking lots were cleared of snow by Sunday and all runways are operational. Power was back for 97% of the retail customers served by Georgia Power — the state largest utility — which serves all but four of the state’s 159 counties, it said. In other news: Vance says Jan. 6 participants who committed violence 'obviously' shouldn't be pardoned. Americans have dimmer view of Biden than they did of Trump or Obama as term ends, AP-NORC poll finds. President Joe Biden says he dropped out of the presidential race for the good of the Democratic Party. US added a strong 256,000 jobs in December as unemployment rate dipped to 4.1%. California man says two of his cats died after drinking raw milk recalled for bird flu. Sam Moore, who sang ‘Soul Man’ in Sam & Dave duo, dies at 89 due to surgery complications. Anita Bryant, a popular singer who became known for opposition to gay rights, dead at age 84. Fired US Center for SafeSport investigator arrested on new charges. Jalen Hurts returns to help the Eagles advance past the Packers, and a game-winning field goal lifts the Commanders over the Buccaneers in the NFC playoffs, Josh Allen leads the Bills to an AFC wild-card win over the Broncos, the Patriots hire another former linebacker as coach and the Cavaliers’ league-best win streak is snapped.  Yankees fans who interfered with Mookie Betts during World Series banned from all MLB games. Lamar Jackson repeats and Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson are unanimous choices for AP All-Pro. Former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck says he has committed to Miami for 2025 season. On this week's AP Religion Roundup, Pope Francis starts the year with legacy-building leadership announcements. India kicks off a massive Hindu festival touted as the world's largest religious gathering. In the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was clear that the 2020 rowing season was in jeopardy, we started brainstorming. We were just two masters rowers and coaches who wanted to celebrate the expansive array of rowers, coaches, and coxswains and savor real-life experience from launch to cox seat at every level.  We launched Steady State Network in September 2020 with one goal: reframe the popular, yet limited narrative about rowing culture by creating a more inclusive and better represented rowing community.  On September 22, 2020 with very little audio production experience, but plenty of big ideas and lots of opinions, we dropped episode 1 of Steady State Podcast and wondered: will anyone notice? In 2017, the Larry Nassar scandal rocked the Olympic community. Hundreds of allegations of sexual abuse against the former USA Gymnastics doctor underscored how vulnerable athletes are — particularly when they're minors. That year, Congress and the U.S. Olympic Committee had a solution. The U.S. Center for SafeSport was founded to investigate and respond to allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct. The goal was for predators like Larry Nassar to never harm young athletes again. Now, seven years later, SafeSport is facing scrutiny of its own — over whether it's made good on that promise. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

USA Swimming is known around the world as one of the powerhouse teams in the sport and this year expectations are high as always ahead of the 2024 Olympic Summer Games in Paris. This year's Games will be the second for Chief Executive Officer Tim Hinchey but the first in which he does not have to lead the national governing body under pandemic-related conditions. With a high-profile year that includes not only the Olympics but the World Aquatics championships that recently started in Qatar and a host of national level meets around the country, we caught up with Tim recently to discuss how USA Swimming places events around the United States, anticipation for this year's Olympic Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and much more. Among the topics in this episode USA Swimming's strategy in putting together this year's schedule of events with an eye toward athletes having their peak performances at the Olympic Summer Games in Paris (1:52) The U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, which starts June 15 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and how progress and anticipation is coming along (3:31) If a successful Trials would give USA Swimming encouragement to trying to do more events in NFL-sized and non-swim specific venues (5:48) When putting together an events calendar whether it be this year or years to come, what USA Swimming looks for in partner destinations and venues (7:41) His second Olympics with USA Swimming and the adjustment in being in a ‘normal' Olympic cycle this time around (10:07) The pressure of leading one (if not the) most dominant swimming teams in the world (12:30) The importance of a strong Paris 2024 performance in setting up the next four years ahead of LA28 (14:12) Thoughts on the plans for open water swimming in Paris to be held in the River Seine (16:09) Amount of time as a chief executive officer that he spends on swimming and athlete issues compared to sponsorship, SafeSport and more (17:55) Changes on the collegiate landscape and how it affects development of elite swimming prospects (20:55) The best perk of being USA Swimming's Chief Executive Officer (23:24) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mary Dukes: An Evolution from Owner to Professional to Rep to Judge Host Laura Reeves is joined by Mary Dukes, legendary Whippet breeder, professional handler, AKC Executive Field Representative and now judge. [caption id="attachment_12711" align="alignleft" width="400"] A 1991 advertisement for Dukes' handling services.[/caption] Dukes has spent a lifetime involved in working with animals. From showing horses to training elephants to showing dogs. Her work with the zoo animals instilled in her an absolute dedication to animal husbandry. NO Dirty Dogs “There are no shortcuts in animal care. Period,” Dukes said. “In zoo animals, you have to be even more on top of it because wild animals don't have a tell that they're sick. In the wild, any tell that they are sick or injured is going to make them dead. So they are really good at masking that. If you are sloppy or dirty or messy there is no room for you in the animal business. “I'll put this on blast right now, if someone walks into my ring with a dirty dog, we're going to have a problem. There is no excuse to show a dirty dog. I won't hold it against the dog, but the handler might get an earful.” AKC Registered Handler Program Dukes was an early member of the AKC Registered Handler Program. As a rep, Dukes was a coordinator of the RHP. She joined RHP because they demanded insurance, inspections, so “I wanted to put my money where my mouth was.” RHP is not a guarantee the handler is going to win with your dog, Dukes said. “The whole point of the program is so the people have a place to start looking where we had done some of the ground work for you. You know they (they handlers) are insured. You know their vehicle is inspected for safety and cleanliness. You know their kennel has been inspected by AKC kennel inspectors. You know they've signed a code of ethics. “RHP members have to have a contract. They have to bill in a timely fashion. The bill has to be itemized. A lot of the trouble you see, most of it is because the expectations weren't clear. If you have a contract, it's [caption id="attachment_12710" align="alignright" width="392"] Dukes is still actively involved with horses. Her vacations frequently involve riding in exotic locales.[/caption] right there in black and white. Safe Sport “One of the newest requirements is SafeSport. All RHP members have to take the training as a condition of membership. “Safe Sport is a congressionally mandated program for every Olympic sport. “There's been a lot of abuses in every sport. Basically, Safe Sport is making you aware of what to look for. If you see a situation that you suspect might be something, it gives you tools. Because we aren't an Olympic sport, we don't have access to the mechanics of the national organization. “It automatically makes everyone (who's had the training) mandatory reporters. If you put it out in the open more, it's harder for someone to creep around. I would like to see it spread out to judges, especially juniors judges.” Join us next week for part two of this fantastic conversation. Does your gym have a pro-fueling culture? What does that even look like? Are gymnastics clubs responsible for providing nutrition education to their gymnasts? Should the coaches or owners be the ones teaching gymnasts about nutrition or should they bring in an expert? Or should the topic be avoided completely and parents and athletes seek out information and support on their own?I believe there are plenty of things coaches can say and do regarding nutrition to help their gymnasts. Positive statements that focus on adequacy are always welcomed. It's when the advice gets "prescriptive" (the coach offers to write a meal plan) or focused on body comments (negative OR positive) that the waters get a little murky. This is when bringing in an expert can be so clutch. When coaches and owners understand the value and importance of bringing in a qualified expert, they enhance what they're already doing in the gym. A pro-fueling culture for your gymnasts will make them more coachable, more resilient, and repair and recover better. Coaches are so influential. They are one of the most important adults in a gymnast's life. The club where these athletes train is also an influential environment. With them spending 20+ hours a week within those walls, we want to do everything in our power to ensure it's a pro-fueling culture for our gymnasts. In this episode you'll hear: What the coach's scope of practice is when it comes to fueling and nutrition education for gymnasts  How to support gymnasts' nutrition as a coach or owner without crossing lines, boundaries, or SafeSport. What happens when you lift and elevate a pro-fueling culture in gymnastics and take a well-rounded approach in your gym.  Links & Resources Team Talk Series inquiries for coaches and ownersThe Balanced Gymnast®  Program for level 5-10 female gymnasts Blog: How Coaches Can Talk to Their Gymnasts About Nutrition Connect with Christina on Instagram @the.gymnast.nutritionist or support@christinaandersonrdn.com

Liberty AC is the oldest all women's track club in the country, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. I speak to president of the board Viki Bok and official- unofficial team historian Alda Cossi (both women are competitive members of the masters running scene). Liberty has run through the gauntlet of sea changes in society via womens sport: It began as a new england sports club for young boys, and soon also became an opportunity for girls in sport when there were none-as schools did not offer this to girls in the 50s. During the 60's and 70's they had women athletes from many events in track and field competing for them and some went on to become Olympians and National Team Members and Champions like sprinters Betty Selman and Kathy Lawson to name a few. On the distance side of things, women like Darlene Beckford, Lynn Jennings and Joan Samuelson came through the program, and eventually professional contracts came into the picture to offer more support. (We didn't talk about it as I wasn't sure who else had been traumatized by this but one of the eras of coaching in the club was that of John Babbington-who has recently been named as a serial abuser of his young athletes, which is extremely upsetting and a sadly not unheard of piece of the womens sport landscape . Currently, athletes and supporters are pushing for prevention and better protected against this.) Their website statement: “Liberty is a community of women committed to inclusive athleticism, compassion, and fairness. We are deeply disturbed to learn of the behavior that led to SafeSport's investigation and findings of sexual misconduct by John Babington. We acknowledge the extraordinary strength it takes to share the pain associated with sexual misconduct, including assault. Liberty's current board and membership want Lynn Jennings, Darlene Beckford Pearson, and others who suffered similar abuse to know that we stand with them and will do whatever we can to support their healing and justice.”   “today-Liberty is mostly adult women actively engaged in career and community in addition to being dedicated runners” The club is a hub for masters women athletes -some of which only tried competitive running once reaching this age. The fulfillment, community and healthy habits cultivated in the group are a benefit to women of all abilities and show you don't become invisible or have to give up parts of your life when you hit a certain age.
