Critic and writer Naomi Zeichner joins Pop Pantheon to explore the career of the “vocal bible,” Brandy. Louie and Naomi unpacked Brandy's self-titled 1994 debut, released when she was just 15, her landmark acting roles as Moesha and Cinderella, and 1998's Darkchild-assisted Never Say Never, which reimagined her at the vanguard of R&B futurism and became one of the signature blockbusters of the decade. They then discuss 2002 adventurous electropop-R&B fantasia Full Moon, 2004's deeply personal Afrodisiac and her later period work, like 2012's Two Eleven, which kicked off a cultural and critical reappraisal of her work. Finally, Louie and Naomi rank Brandy in the Official Pop Pantheon. The pioneering story of the Veldt is a one of one. Twin black brothers from North Carolina in the 80s embrace the alternative rock coming from the UK and record their debut album in 1989 with Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins producing! The album was shelved, but they did get a couple great albums out in the 90s (Afrodisiac is especially excellent) but it never really takes off mainly because labels don't know what to do with black guys making alternative rock. They've soldiered on over the years releasing consistently great music and touring, converting skeptical audiences along the way. Today they are celebrating that Guthrie album, Illuminated 1989, finally being released. Guitarist Danny Chavis joins us to tell his fascinating story that is literally unlike anyone else's in history. Enjoy! www.lebizarrenoir.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Thunderlove Studio is less a physical place and more a state of mind. What a treat it was to welcome Daniel Chavis, lead singer of The Veldt, into Thunderlove Studio. Anywho, you may or may not have heard of The Veldt. From where I sit, you should have. As Daniel and I chatted, there may have been several reasons they may not have achieved the type of widespread commercial success back in the early to mid-90s - the least of which is their sound. The Veldt - the band name taken from a Ray Bradbury short story - is often categorized as a “shoegaze” band. Pitchfork included their 1994 classic Afrodisiac in their “Top 50 Shoegaze Albums of All Time” list. Over the past month, The Veldt has released a couple of songs bourne from those initial Robin Guthrie sessions - “The Everlasting Gobstopper” and “Aurora Borealis” - on their Bandcamp page. Daniel told me that they're hoping to drop the whole Guthrie-produced set at the end of September. Discovering The Veldt has been a real treat and they're exactly the kind of band that makes this Abandoned Albums journey so much fun. I got to talk with Daniel about the band's origin, being a black rock band, the influence of Afrodisiac, and WTF “White Music For Black People” means. Gummies were eaten. Stories were told. Bonds were made. André connects with a kindred spirit in Jim Rugg a fellow Graphic Designer who transitioned far more successfully into comic books! Jim is a Pittsburgh based, comic book artist, book maker, illustrator, and designer. His books include Street Angel, the PLAIN Janes, Afrodisiac, Notebook Drawings, Rambo 3.5, Supermag and The Incredible Hulk: Grand Design. He has a deep love of comic books, zines, lettering, podcasts, running, pro-wrestling, pizza, and cats. His work has earned Eisner and Ignatz Awards and continues to innovate in a medium that seemed to have grown stale in visual experimentation Jim discusses how comics may have saved his life as he grew up in a small town., transitioning to comics through graphic design, a deep sighted love of genre cinema, categorizing The Hulk with Universal Monsters, being surprisingly free while working for Marvel and using Professional Wrestling as an avenue to tell a visual story through violence!

Pittsburgh-based cartoonist Jim Rugg lives and breathes comics. Through his work in his own books, podcasts (TMSIDK) and Cartoonist Kayfabe (which he co-hosts with Ed Piskor), Rugg spreads his knowledge and love of the comics medium like wildfire. His books—Street Angel, Plain Janes and Afrodisiac (among others)—stick out from other comics on the shelves. During the conversation, Wits’ End host Shah Emami and Rugg talk about Octobriana 1976, Jim’s upcoming comic. Octobriana 1976, an ambitious project, is being funded through Kickstarter. This will be the first fluorescent blacklight comic to hit the scene! Shah and Rugg talk about the future of comics distribution, Frank Miller’s development as a cartoonist (through Daredevil, DKR, Sin City, etc.), collaborating with other creators vs. working alone, some background on Cartoonist Kayfabe (co-hosted by Rugg and Ed Piskor) and a lot more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/oglinda-din-baie/message

In Episode 034, Mark Wise interviews Jim Rugg, creator of "Street Angel," "Afrodisiac," artist of "The PLAIN Janes," and half of the "Cartoonist Kayfabe" podcast alongside Ed Piskor. They discuss his influences, artistic process, and the new "Street Angel" book currently available for pre-order.
Jim Rugg is an independent creator who’s never been afraid to pursue projects he’s scared about. As a result he’s assembled an interesting catalogue of work including comics like Street Angel and Afrodisiac, as well as other comic-related projects. In this episode he joins me to discuss all this projects and what it takes to make ends meet as an independent comic book creator.
Like many of his fellow Pittsburgher cartoonists, Jim Rugg’s work lives at a fascinating cross section of mainstream and indie comics culture. It’s a phenomenon Rugg and cohost Ed Piskor happily explore in their YouTube series, Cartoonist Kayfabe, which breaks down the earlier days of Wizard Magazine, issue by issue. His work, too, is the product of a confluence of distinct influences, from the skateboarding and martial arts of Street Angel, to the blacksplotation films and pulp comics of Afrodisiac. On a recent visit to his hometown, Rugg joined us to discuss teaching comics, choosing projects and why Rob Liefeld is important.
On this week's podcast we are joined by Thelma & Joyce two lovely young ladies who were unsatisfied with the DC dating event scene so they took it upon themselves to create AfroDisiac DC, a Single's Mixer event to help fill that gap. They brought their lovely energy to the studio to discuss exactly why their event is different, why you can't miss it, and also they shared their very interesting experiences in the DC dating scene and compared and contrasted them with the hilarious opinions and stories The Africanist had to share as well. Their event will be November 15th, 2018 at Capo's Italian Deli 715 Florida Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001 from 6pm-10pm. A funny and informative episode. Please welcome to the party floor, the excellent Jim Rugg! Jim is of course the co-creator of Street Angel and Afrodisiac, as well as artist on The Plain Janes and other books, and designer & curator of not just his own books but multiple zines and magazines. After a lengthy hiatus, Jim & co-creator Brian Maruca are producing a series of new, full color Street Angel hardcover albums through Image Comics. We get into the return of Street Angel, formatting considerations and all, but first we do a brief recap of Jim's long career in the trenches. From there, it's on to a variety of topics such as Clowes' Death Ray, favorite drawing tools, Jim's old and much missed podcasting days, and pro-wrestling and comics!

Andy and Derek are happy to have on the podcast the multifaceted Jim Rugg, whose new printing of Street Angel (created with Brian Maruca) was just released by AdHouse. The guys talk with Jim about the significance of the new printing -- a colorful discussion -- as well as the book's protagonist Jesse Sanchez, an "orphan of the streets and skateboarding daughter of justice" who "fights a never ending battle against the forces of evil, nepotism, ninjas, and hunger." The artist discusses the title's early days at Slave Labor Graphics as a serial and its final issue as the launching pad for another Rugg/Maruca creation, Alan "Afrodisiac" Driesler, the mysterious, irresistible, smooth dark chocolate brother of the streets who fights to protect his turf and his ladies. And of course, it's inevitable that the guys get into a discussion of 1970s culture and comics, including kung fu, TV cop shows, blaxploitation films, and Big Jim action figures. Derek and Andy also talk with Jim about his work on other titles, including Supermag (AdHouse), The Plain Janes (DC/Minx), and his art for titles as diverse as The Guild, Adventure Time, and Henry and Glenn Forever and Ever. It's a fun conversation, one with as much savvy and street smarts as the characters who populate Jim's stories.

Since 1991, Bone has become a world-wide phenomenon, published in nearly 30 languages. In 2005, Scholastic reissued Bone in color through their Graphix imprint, inspiring an entire generation of young cartoonists who found his work through traditional book stores, comic book shops, schools, and libraries. He followed the Tolkien-esque, Bone, with Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil (DC Comics) and RASL (Cartoon Books) - a sci-fi noir about a dimension-hopping art thief. Smith recently announced his next project, Tüki Save the Humans, about the first human to leave Africa during the Ice Age. Tell Me Something I Don't Know is produced and hosted by three talented cartoonists and illustrators: Jim Rugg, a Pittsburgh-based comic book artist, graphic designer, zinemaker, and writer best known for Afrodisiac, The Plain Janes, and Street Angel. His latest project is SUPERMAG. Jasen Lex is a designer and illustrator from Pittsburgh. He is currently working on a graphic novel called Washington Unbound. All of his art and comics can be found at jasenlex.com. Ed Piskor is the cartoonist who drew the comic, Wizzywig, and draws the Brain Rot/ Hip Hop Family Tree comic strip at this very site, soon to be collected by Fantagraphics Books and available for pre-order now.
