Hey there friends! I've been missing in action the last few weeks. I apologize for that! I've been busy renovating my house with my partner in crime and my dad. That's been consuming some time, for sure. Alas, today I'm extremely excited because this episode is a fun conversation with Randy Frobel; front man for Canadian pop punk band We Were Sharks. I've been listening to We Were Sharks for a few years now. They write incredibly well crafted, fun, and energetic pop punk tunes. Randy has a killer voice, and a distinct voice. He's also in a cover band called The Young Bucs and we discuss what that's like. We also talk about the creative process, writing tunes with Paul from Silverstein, navigating Covid, and continuing to make art into adulthood. Because, why not? Shouldn't we keep making art? An emo-leaning, alternative rock outfit based in Scranton, PA, The Maguas are Erik Miller (Vocals), Matthew Jenkins (Lead Guitar), Daulton Rissinger (Rhythm Guitar), Luke Prusinski (Bass), and Brandon Ossont (Drums). Established in 2018, the band released their debut EP, ‘Good Beer,' the following year. The six-track, self-produced record was a demonstration of the collective's unique songwriting capabilities, boasting songs written by each member prior to their coalescence. The notable exception, however, was, “Funeral.” The closing track brought them back together for an anthemic display of their aggressive pop-punk power, which soon accentuated performances alongside the likes of Forever Came Calling, Assuming We Survive, and We Were Sharks. Partnering with producer Nik Bruzzese (Man Overboard, The Wonder Years), The Maguas set to work on their sophomore release in early 2020. ‘One of Us Is Lying' dropped later that year, quickly garnering significant traction within the scene and earning them recognition from an array of outlets including The Popko Project, New Noise Magazine, and Alternative Press. Once again working with Bruzzese, the band is now setting forth on their third iteration with an anticipated release in 2021. With a solid foundation underfoot, they're diving deep into dark and vulnerable lyrical thematics to advance their signature “novel yet nostalgic” emo sound. Randy Frobel is an incredibly nice, incredibly busy guy. As well being the frontman of Canadian pop punk heroes We Were Sharks, he plays amateur league baseball, performs in a popular covers band AND finds time to write solo songs and play video games. We hate him for all of this.Luckily for us, Randy also has time to be part of our offbeat podcast. Things go off on a massive tangent very quickly this time as we look at the differences between cricket and baseball (spoiler alert - cricket is boring), discuss Steve-O's voice, ponder whether Disney Plus kickstarted the pandemic and put Randy through a quiz about sharks. We Were Sharks are a Pop-Punk band originally from Ontario, Canada. They released their EP, 'Not A Chance', in 2015 and started touring part-time with how well the response was to the record. Now back in the studio with Paul Rousseau, lead guitarist for Silverstein, they look to change up this album with some R&B influences. 'Lost Touch', is also produced by Paul and you can stream these albums on all platforms.
